Josiah TOMLINSON
Josiah Tomlinson who was amongst the first three Quaker families to settle at Wateree (now Camden, Kershaw Co.) SC in 1751. He was from Timahoe, Ireland. They'd intended to settle in North Carolina but the ship's captain was not acquainted with the coast and overshot his destination. The ship had left Ireland in April of 1751 and by Oct. 1751, Samuel Wyly, head of another of these families had petitioned for land in South Carolina. Josiah was granted land on Oct. 25, 1751 in West Wateree. This was a very early settlement in the area and took very hardy families to endure the dangers from Indians and wildlife. (C-1470) Josiah married Elizabeth WILSON before 1749. |
