Our Coat/e/s Surname Project

Please join our Coat/e/s surname project at Family Tree DNA.

Our focus is in two areas:  YDNA (works for males only) and Autosomal DNA (Family Finder Kit for both females and males)

Our
Coat/e/s Y-DNA Chart is at:  www.familytreedna.com/public/coats?iframe=yresults
or our autosomal group info is at:  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Coat_Name_Study

Once you have taken a DNA test via FTDNA and received either/both of these test kits back, join our group by choosing the MyGroups tab in your member login page to look up Coats and join our group. This surname has many spellings including Coate, Coates, Cote, Cotes, Couts, Kotz and Kurtz.   All Coat/e/s or close derivatives are welcome to participate.   We recommend that you answer most questions to the positive when setting up your privacy options.   Your kit number will always remain anonomys and allow you to link it to your oldest confirmed Coate/s ancestor.   The more "YES" responses you give, the more the administrators will be able to assist you with your Coat/e/s branch of your tree.

Here are further instructions once you have joined.

A.  Our YDNA Group

If you wish to be included in our  YDNA chart, please follow these instructions.

1.  Log into Family Tree DNA
2.  Highlight your name and kit #.
3.  Click on Account Settings.
4.  Choose the Privacy and Sharing tab.
5.  Go down the page a bit.  Under Project Sharing, choose or checkmark "Opt In To Sharing".
This means your kit number and results will go into their pages, but NOT your name.
6.  We also highly recommend that you choose "Public" for family tree sharing
after changing any person's name who is living to Private or Living on Public Trees.  We can't help you get anywhere without knowing your family tree.
*7.  Add the name of your oldest proven Coat/e/s ancestor in your personal FTNDA page under the genealogy tab.   This links your kit # to your oldest relative in the YDNA chart.  Your name will NEVER be displayed with your kit number for privacy's sake.   Your YDNA will be linked to your oldest known ancestor instead.   This is a very important step in the set up process.
8.  You are also invited to add your data to https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Coat_Name_Study
