    Notes:

There is only one Wojciech Gewont who emigrated through Ellis Island in the records. He is the correct age and from the correct area to be the original immigrant in this line. According to family tradition from Autumn Giewont's side of the family, he and his future wife both came over at different times while they were single. They met and married in Pennsylvania in 1907. According to the Ellis Island Internet site Wojciech was age 18 when he arrived on Apr 8, 1903 on the Prinzess Irene from Breman, Germany. His nationality is listed as Galicy (Galicia) which changed hands between Russia, Poland, Austria and Germany multiple times. His town of origin is listed as Dzianisz. This town is locate just 3 miles from Mount Giewont in the southern central tip of current day Poland! It is in the Nowy Sacz Administrative division of current day Poland near the major city of Zakopane.

He changed his name to Albert in this country as that was the American translation for his name, Wojciech. The correct translation of Wojciech in our language is Adelbert, so it looks like he gave himself a more popular version of his American name. His emigration record asked him if he was meeting someone, and he stated that it was cousin, Tedr_ej Plasinski in Uniontown, PA, but it indicates that his cousin lived in Oliver, Pennsylvania. He and his wife by family tradition also returned to their homeland sometime after their marriage before coming back to Pennsylvania. Their arrival to America took place on Feb. 11, 1925. Their visa was issued in Warsaw. They were using their original names which were spelled Wojeiech and Marja Gewont. They traveled on the S.S. Zeeland from Antwerp, Belgium to New York. Their closest living relative whom they had visited was "father Jedrzej Gewont" in Dzianis, Poland. Their destination was Ralph, Pennsylvania. (G-1,2)

According to granddaughter, Marilyn Turnage, Albert and his wife went back for several years to Poland where he worked in the Coal mines and Mary ran a Boarding house. In the 1940 census, he is listed at age 56 with his wife at age 40. They were both born in Poland. Their home was worth $3000.00 which seemed high compared to the value of the neighbors property. He was a farmer and worked 70 hours a week. He made $720.00 income in 1939 and this seemed about average compared to his neighbors. For citizenship of the foreign born, it says "N/A". These are the only persons with any mark on this column on this census page. They had children born in Pennsylvania named Mary, Mike, Stanley and Charles Giewont.

According to his death record in 1958, he lived at R.D. 2, Edinboro, Pennsylvania before he died of a one day stay at St. Vincent's Hospital in in Erie, PA of Coronary Thrombus. His wife only listed his country of birth, Poland. She did not know his parent's names.

    Died:
    Event Description: Coronary Thrombus

Wojciech married Marja ZAJAC on 9 Feb 1907 in Of Westmoreland Co., PA. Marja (daughter of Unknown ZAJAC and Unknown) was born on 9 May 1891 in Pieniazkowice, Galicia (Now Poland); died on 29 Aug 1984 in Edinboro Nursing Home, Edinboro, Erie, PA, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Marja ZAJAC was born on 9 May 1891 in Pieniazkowice, Galicia (Now Poland) (daughter of Unknown ZAJAC and Unknown); died on 29 Aug 1984 in Edinboro Nursing Home, Edinboro, Erie, PA, USA.

    Notes:

She was from Nowy Targ, Poland just south of Krakow on the map and near the Slovakia border in the Carpathian mountains. Her place of birth in their return trip to Poland in 1925 said she was born in Pinioskowice, (Poland). The closest town I've found by name in Poland is Pieniazkowice. It is a village in the "administrative district of Gmina Czarny Dunajec, within Nowy Targ County, Lesser Poland Voivodeship, in southern Poland, close to the border with Slovakia. It lies approximately 11 kilometres (7 mi) north-west of Nowy Targ and 61 km (38 mi) south of the regional capital Krak

  3. 10.  James Vincent FUCCIJames Vincent FUCCI was born on 27 Jun 1903 in New York, New York, USA (son of Dominic DI FUCCIO and Carminia \ Carmela \ Erminia \ Emelia (SOFRAMONTE)); died on 15 Apr 1977 in City Hospital, Meadville, Crawford, PA, USA; was buried in Meadville, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, United States of America.

    Notes:

In the 1930 census, James and Mary Fucci lived in West Mead Twp., Crawford Co., Pennsylvania. It says he was age 24 and born in New York but that could be misinformation from his wife. Other sources have led us to believe that he was born in Pennsylvania or Italy. Both their parents were born in Italy. He was a boiler maker for the Erie Railroad.

The only James I have been able to find in the U.S. previous to 1930 was the 1910 census for the same city. He is of the correct age, but his parents were Mike and Pasqual. It is possible that persons remembering the supposed names of his parents in his obituary were mixing it up with his wife's parents or grandparents instead.

There is a James Fucci living in Meadville City, Crawford Co., Pennsylvania in the 1920 census where he is listed at age 18 on the Jan. 18, 1920 date that the census was taken. He was the son of Frank Fucci age 48 and Pilue Fucci age 48, and his siblings were Ethel Fucci age 15, Mary Fucci age 11, and Thomas Fucci age 7 that also might be his parents instead. Everyone in the family was born in Italy. The father emigrated in 1902 and the rest came over in 1913.

James would have likely been born in 1901 or 1902 if his age is given correctly in this version. One of James' brothers might possibly be a Thomas J. Fucci also of Meadville, Pennsylvania. The main reason I have a doubt about it is that Thomas died in 1986 and James's obituary stated that he was preceded in death by 3 of his brothers.

Here is Thomas's wife's obituary in case he is a part of this family. "Carmella Fucci02/15/06 - (Meadville Tribune) Carmella Fucci, 93, of 31 Park Ave., Meadville, formerly of 9572 Franklin Pike, Meadville, rejoined her Lord Monday, Feb. 13, 2006, at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community. She also worked at the former Talon Inc. for 35 years. She loved being with her family, traveling, and playing heated card games. She was a role model for all who knew her. She married Thomas F. Fucci Sept. 22, 1934, at St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church. He preceded her in death Oct. 8, 1986. She is survived by her son, John Fucci of Erie; and three daughters, Pauline Markey and her husband, Lee, of Meadville, Kathy DeSantis and her husband, Gary, of Meadville, and Debbie Dougherty and her husband, Mike, of Erie. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas; her granddaughter, Camrie DeSantis-VonRitter, her namesake; two brothers, John and Nick Piccirillo; two sisters, Mary Capone and Katie Perotto; and her daughter-in-law, Nancy Fucci. 4. 11.  Mary MARENDOMary MARENDO was born on 22 Jun 1912 in Meadville, Crawford, Pennsylvania, USA (daughter of Dominic MARENDO and Elena "Helen" DE FUCCI); died on 27 Apr 2006 in Meadville, Crawford, PA, USA; was buried on 1 May 2006 in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Meadville, Crawford, PA, USA.

    Notes:

She was a member of the St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church in Meadville, Pennsylvania. According to the 1930 census records, she was born about 1907 but her obituary gives her birthdate as 1912. Her obituary is as follows from the Meadville Tribune Newspaper. If her birthdate was 1912, she would have only been 14 when she married. It is possible that she made herself appear older in the 1930 census or that that census date is the more accurate one instead.
