1. | John DUVALL was born in 1774 (son of Lewis DUVALL, * and Anne WELSH, *); died in 1858 in , Montgomery, MD, USA. Notes: He is likely the John Duvall who had a subscription to the "Christian Advocate and Journal, Zion's Herald" 1829-1831. His post office address was Darnestown, Montgomery Co., Maryland at the time. This was a Methodist paper. He is probably the John Duval who leaves the following will, or a transcription thereof: "Grandchildren: John G., Cecilius B., William F., Joseph J., Summerville, Louisa R., Valier Duvall (youngest of 4 grandsons under age 21) - all real estate. Son" Grafton Duvall, his wife Harriet and their children (named above), Ex: Nephew John S. Duvall, son of testator's dec'd brother Hammon Duvall, Wit: William Burns, Edward Woodfiled, Lyde Griffith." Family/Spouse: Jane WYVILL. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
2. | Lewis DUVALL, * was born before 1745 in Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George's, MD (son of Lewis DUVALL and Eleanor FARMER); died before 17 Sep 1817 in , Montgomery, MD, USA. Notes: Though he was born in Anne Arundel Co., MD, he grew up in Rock Creek Parish which at that time included Prince George and Frederick Co., Maryland. Parts of Frederick Co. became Montgomery Co., Maryland which could account for the fact that he raised his own children in Montgomery Co., Maryland. He took the Oath of Allegiance in 1778 in Montgomery Co., in front of Magistrate Edward Burgess to verify his patriotism in the Revolutionary War. In the first census of the United States for Frederick Co., Maryland (1790), there were 2 males over age 16, 4 under age 16, 5 females and 6 slaves in his household. (CL-697) Lewis married Anne WELSH, * before 1763. Anne (daughter of John WELSH, * and Hannah HAMMOND, *) was born before 1750; died before 9 Aug 1825 in , Montgomery, MD, USA. 3. | Anne WELSH, * was born before 1750 (daughter of John WELSH, * and Hannah HAMMOND, *); died before 9 Aug 1825 in , Montgomery, MD, USA. Notes: Ann wrote her will in 1818, not quite 7 years before her death. In it, she only named her children, Elizabeth Owens and Lewis W. Duvall. Witnesses were Ephraim Etchison and Samuel Welsh, Sr. It is not known how Samuel is related, but it is suspected that he might be her brother. A Samuel Welsh lived in Montgomery Co., MD and witnessed the sale of land by John Ward to Henry Griffith on Oct. 16, 1779. (CL-707)

4. | Lewis DUVALL was born on 16 Jan 1703 in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel, MD, USA (son of John Jean DUVALL and Elizabeth JONES); died after 1771 in , , Pennsylvania. Notes: His home was at "Wilson's Grove", which he inherited from his grandfather though his father. This was his home until 1737 when an act by Assemby occurred involving his inherited lands. He then sold this land on Oct. 17, 1737 to William Peele. He is listed as having many small children at the time. Only four of them have been discerned to date. He is likely the Captain Lewis Duvall listed in "Settlers of Maryland, 1731-1750." He purchased 100 acres of land named "Addition" and 50 more acres called "Pretty Land" on Jun 10, 1734, both in Anne Arundel Co., MD. He made additional purchases on Nov 3, 1737 of 50 acres called "Little Worth" in the same county. Lewis married Eleanor FARMER on 26 Nov 1722 in , Prince George, MD. Eleanor (daughter of Samuel FARMER and Sarah DUVALL) was born in 1707 in Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George's, MD; died in 1755. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

8. | John Jean DUVALL was born on 7 Jul 1661 in Abington, Anne Arundel, MD (son of Mareen DUVALL and Mary BOUTH); died before 20 Apr 1711 in Abington, All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel, MD, USA; was buried on 20 Apr 1711 in All Hallows Parish, Anne Arundel, MD, USA. Notes: John purchased the following properties in Anne Arundel Co., Maryland over his lifetime: "Duvall's Range" of 708 acres on Nov 16, 1694; "Duvall's Delight" of 1000 acres on Dec 10, 1695 ; "What You Will" of 373 acres on Jun 1, 1700; "Luggox" of 780 acres in 1702; and "Honest Man's Lot" of 110 acres on July 22, 1707. After his death, his son John appears to have inherited or sold "Duvall's Delight" of 3,108 acres on Apr 10, 1715. He was what you would call "A Man of Property". Harry Wright Newman conjectures in "Mareen Duvall of Middleton Plantation" that John was born in France and was separated from his father as and infant. If his theory is correct, he is the John who arrived in Maryland from France in November of 1678. This would account for why he was not in the military service like his brother, Mareen "the elder" when there was an Indian uprising shortly before he arrived. It is clear from Mareen's will that John is his oldest son. Mareen "the elder" was simply the oldest of 2 sons that Mareen named after himself by two different wives. John married Elizabeth JONES. 10. | Samuel FARMER was born in 1678 in Of Anne Arundel, MD (son of Samuel FARMER); died before 1764. Notes: He moved to Queen Anne's Parish in Prince George Co., MD about Sep. of 1700 when he made land purchases there. His property that he gained over the years was on the border of Prince George's and Frederick Co., MD. There is a Samuel Farmer that was born in Maryland in 1660 that he could descend from. This line is well developed in the Ancestry Public Member Trees but without supporting evidence. It goes back through Lincolnshire and then Leicestershire, England. Some theorize that he is the son of Thomas and Ann Roome Farmer of Virginia who descends from the original Thomas Farmer (who came to the Jamestown area in 1616 from the Aylesbury region of England). However, I feel this is unlikely as YDNA studies have shown a great diversity in the ancestry of the Farmer families. I have also not seen any of the original Thomas's descendants migrate to Maryland in these branches. I and my mother have a cousin match with the brother to Janice Johnston on Chromosome 7, starting with 164003 for about 8 cM's with our only common surname being Farmer. According to her, 2 of the cM's in this segment come from a native American whom has yet to be determined. Samuel married Sarah DUVALL. Sarah (daughter of John Jean DUVALL and Elizabeth JONES) was born in 1689 in Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George's, MD; was christened on 27 Mar 1706 in Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George's, MD; died in 1764 in , Frederick, MD. Notes: She died in 1764 according to Judge Duvall, shortly after she and her son, Samuel, deeded property to her son-in-law, Edward Crow on Nov. 21, 1764.

12. | John WELSH, * was born in 1672 in Arnold Gray Plantation, South River, Anne Arundel, MD (son of Major John WELSH, * Gentleman and Anne); died in Feb 1733 in , Anne Arundel, MD. Notes: He was Justice and County commissioner for Anne Arundel Co., MD from 1726 to 1734. He held the title of High Sheriff Nov. 1732 to June of 1733. This was the most powerful position in the land at the time. He was in a large iron shipping business with his cousin, Richard Snowden. They jointly owned the property, "Snowden and Welsh". He also purchased "Duvall's Range" in 1728 from Hezekiah Clark. John married Rachel in 1715. Rachel died after 1733. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

14. | John HAMMOND was born in 1698 in St. Anne's Parish, Anne Arundel, MD (son of Charles HAMMOND and Hannah HOWARD); died in Sep 1753 in , Anne Arundel, MD. Notes: He lived at Elk Ridge as an adult and was a large planter by trade. In 1733, he was commissioned to purchased the land on Elk Ridge for the purpose of laying out the town of the same name. His will was written on Oct. 2, 1753 in Maryland. In it, he names wife, Ann; daughter Hannah, the wife of John Welsh; son John; daughters, Hammutal and Rachel; son in law Henry Griffith; Sarah Ann Dorsey, daughter of Vachel Dorsey; brother Philip Hammond, William Jeans; daughter Ruth Griffith, and son Charles Hammond. The specific parcels of land he gave away were "Hammond" to son John, his dwelling place to son Charles after his mother's death, and "The Marsh", "Johns Chance" and "Old Mans Folle" to his brother, Philip. His executors were his wife and his son in law Henry Griffith. It was probated on Nov. 12, 1753. John married Anne DORSEY about 1722.
