The following Chattertons were landed freeman in 1763 in Westchester, NY where Samuel was supposedly born: Betts Chatterton, Yeoman, Michael Chatterton, Sr. & Jr., Yeoman. There are no Chatterton's listed as living in Westchester in the 1790 census. There is a Jacob Chatterton in the court records for that area in 1796 with what I believe is an inventory of his estate. I've seen a couple different second hand sources on the parentage of Samuel. OneWorldTree at ancestry lists his father as John Chatterton, d. 1822, Elizabethtown, Quebec, Canada. The following website (http://ca.geocities.com/kempffer7@rogers.com/data/SDC1767.htm) lists his parents as Thomas and Jane Aston Chatterton. I have seen proof for neither.
