1. | Mary COATE was born before 1654 in Of Barton, Somerset, England (daughter of Henry COATE and Elizabeth DERBY); died after 1661. Notes: She was named in her grandfather, Henry Coate's will written in 1661. It is theory on my part that she is the Mary who married John Edwards. She is listed of Barton and married in Curry Rivel Parish in 1670. She is the only Mary in the early English records whom this might apply to. Mary married John EDWARDS on 3 Aug 1675 in St. Andrew, Curry Rivel Parish, Somerset, England. John was born before 1653 in Of Curry Rivel Parish, Somerset, England; and died. 2. | Henry COATE was born about 1620 in , Somerset, ENG (son of Henry COATE, of Hambridge and UNKNOWN); died in 1663 in Curry Rivel, Somerset, England; was buried in Curry Revell, Somerset, England. Notes: Henry Coate named this son Henry in his will dated 1661. Henry married Elizabeth DERBY. Elizabeth was born before 1623 in , Somerset, ENG; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
3. | Elizabeth DERBY was born before 1623 in , Somerset, ENG; and died. Notes: Gary Coats believes this is the Elizabeth Walker married to Henry Coats in that time period, but he's also seen her name listed as Elizabeth Derby. I'm theorizing that it's Elizabeth Derby as I believe Elizabeth Walker was married to a different line of Coats.

4. | Henry COATE, of Hambridge was born about 1595 in Of Curry Rivel, Somerset, England (son of Marmaduke COATE and Marie SOMNER); died about 1662 in Hambridge, Curry Rivel Parish, Somersetshire, ENG. Notes: All historical research led us to believe that our Coate line went back through this Henry to his father Marmaduke. We now have a wonderful YDNA match from a cousin in Australia whom has only 1 point out of 37 DNA points different from us. It proves we descend from this Henry Coate, The Elder, who is the most recent common ancestor we have in common. I am so grateful for this. We finally know for certain after 40 years of research via DNA. How truly wonderful! Henry married UNKNOWN after 1616. died before 1662. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
5. | UNKNOWN died before 1662. Notes: Her name is Jane Batholomew according to Steven T. Ernst on ancestry.com. Her name is Emily Jane according to the Joseph Edge Family Tree. She is the first spouse of Henry Coate according to some trees with his other spouse being Joan Combstork/Comstock. If he also was married to a Joan Combstock that occurred on Apr. 28, 1656 in the Parish of Drayton. No wife is mentioned in Henry's will.

8. | Marmaduke COATE was born before 1552 in Of Curry Rivel, Somerset, England; died in 1624 in Curry Rivel, Somerset, England; was buried in Currey Rivell, Somerset, England. Notes: The oldest Coate in Somerset, England according to I.G.I. records is a Robert Cotes, b. abt 1140 in Fairbanks, Somerset, England. His daughter Margaret, was supposedly born in Cotes, Eccelshall, Staffordshire, England suggesting he might have come from Eccelshall. Staffordshire is the county where the oldest Cotes are known to have originated. If these trees are correct, then it's entirely possible that our Marmaduke goes back from Cotes of early Staffordshire, England in the Eccelshell branch. YDNA evidence supports his ancient lines going back to Staffordshire.: The best theory we have for our Coate line is that it descends through this Robert, b 1140. Fairbanks was in Somerset or Shropshire depending upon time frame and is 130 miles from the oldest known Coate's who lived in Bridgwater, Somerset, England. Marmaduke married Marie SOMNER on 6 Nov 1575 in Weston Zoyland, Somerset, England. Marie (daughter of Richard? SOMNER) was born about 1562 in Maperton, Somerset, England; died in 1631 in Curry Rivel, Somerset, England; was buried in Currie Rivell, Somerset, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
9. | Marie SOMNER was born about 1562 in Maperton, Somerset, England (daughter of Richard? SOMNER); died in 1631 in Curry Rivel, Somerset, England; was buried in Currie Rivell, Somerset, England. Notes: I finally found the marriage record for this Marmaduke and Marie. In the index, her name is listed as Maxine Flinner, but when you enlarge the original book it's in, it looks like Marie Smner. This clerk left out vowels when not needed phonetically. In this case the S is represented by 2 small f looking letters. It's possible that it is how the clerk wrote Skinner, which is the same name in the soundex search on freereg.org.uk as Somner but the small k would normally be very flowery and was a very simple uncrossed f looking letter in her marriage record. We don't believe the double f letters represent f in this case as there were not translations for fnner or fmner in all of Somerset in freereg.org.uk.
