1. | Marmaduke COATE was born in 1601 in Drayton, Somerset, England; was christened on 4 Aug 1601 in St. Catherine, Drayton, Somerset, England (son of Thomas COTTE); was buried on 13 Apr 1643 in Drayton Parish, Somerset, England. Notes: He is listed as the son of Thomas Cotte in his christening record and is apparently a twin. I believe he is the same Marmaduke who is buried in April of 1643 because he is the known Marmaduke in the area at the time with a verified son named Marmaduke also. Family/Spouse: Unknown. 2. | Thomas COTTE was born before 1582 in Of Drayton Parish, Somerset, England (son of Johne COTTE and Unknown); and died. Notes: It is theory that he is the son of John of Drayton. I believe he is because he is of the correct age and place to be his son. He names a son John after his possible father. He has the same spelling of his last name in English records. John is obviously trying to honor a relative named Thomas when he named a daughter Tomasin. The name Thomas was nonexistant except for this Thomas in early Drayton Coate families. If I've placed him correctly, he wasn't in his father's will indicating in this case that he had been given land already before his father's 1621 will and could be his oldest child. Land records in England could help prove or disprove this.

4. | Johne COTTE was born in 1562 in Drayton, Somerset, England; was christened on 1 Feb 1562 in St. Catherine, Drayton, Somerset, England (son of COTE); died after 16 Oct 1621 in Drayton Parish, Somerset, England. Notes: I think it highly likely that John was a brother to Marmaduke (m. to Mary Somner) of Bridgewater and Curry Rivel by age and naming patterns. The children and grandchildren of the earliest Bridgewater Cotte's moved into Curry Rivel, North Petherton and Drayton which would be consistent with this pattern. This Johne also had a grandson named Marmaduke which only carries down from the Cotte family in Bridgewater. That generation of Coate's consistently had their name spelled as Cotte in the first hand records also supporting this relationship. This is circumstantial evidence and still needs proved. None of the children whom were christened in this generation had their parents names given in the records. He left a will in Drayton, Somerset, England in 1621: "By the will dated 16th October 1621, John Coate of Drayton gave unto his daughter Marye a legacy, and to his son Henry some household goods, and the rest of his goods and chattels to his wife who was appointed Sole executrix of his will. Will proven at Taunton, Nov 1621." (Park) This is a very early date for records in Somerset and he could easily be a brother or cousin of the Marmaduke of Bridgewater who died in 1624. Johne married Unknown. Unknown was born before 1566; died after 1621 in Of Drayton Parish, Somerset, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
