  1. 1.  James GLENN was born on 4 Mar 1792 in , Augusta, VA (son of William GLENN and Ann CURRY, *); died on 11 Jan 1886 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 14 Jan 1886 in Glenn Cemetery, Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

At Ancestry, my mother's descent to James Glenn is supported by a DNA Circle that relates 5 participants all back to this same James Glenn and inter-relates them to various members in the group. In it 3 of the members descend from this James Glenn and all are related to each other through DNA. This is called triangulation and proves that we descend from James Glenn genetically: M.C., JClark2d, and w_woods57. A second triagulation in this group again is proof and that is between M.C., JClark2d and terkamazis. James Glenn "was a farmer and cabinet maker. His home, west of (Glenn) Cemetery (near Vinton), was a 'weigh station' for the 'underground railroad.' James was amongst a small group of families that emigrated from Virginia and helped found Huntington Twp. in Gallia Co., Ohio. A religious man, he was instrumental in starting the first Presbyterian Church of Huntington and Raccoon in 1829, serving as Ruling Elder and Clerk." (CL-149) He was known as Uncle Jimmy to his nieces and nephews. (CL-453)

James paid taxes on his chattel in the 1827 tax lists for Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio (CL-499, 587) He was involved in several land transactions after that date. On Feb 3, 1831, Andrew Y. Glenn and his wife, Margaret, sold 30 acres of land on the west side of the northwest quarter of Section 25, Twp.7, Range 16 from lands he bought at Chillicothe, Ohio to James Glenn (his brother) for 200 hundred dollars. (CL-DOC, V. 12, p. 147) On Nov. 23, 1833, John B. Poindexter sold land in Range 16, Twp. 7 & part of Section 25 &26 bordering on Raccoon Creek for $275.00 to James. Both of these properties are listed as in his possession in the 1874 Gallia Co., Ohio Atlas. (V. 12, p. 146) (CL-523, 590) On Sep 6, 1834, James Glenn & Polly, his wife, sold Andrew Y. Glenn a section of the northeast corner of the north west quarter of Section 25 in Twp. 7,, Range 16 for 96 dollars. It abutted Raccoon Creek. (CL-524, V. 12, p. 653) The last record found was on Mar 2, 1864 between James Glenn and his son, Milton K. Glenn. Milton bought ten acres of land from his father for $200.00 in Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio that was part of the northeast quarter of Section 20. (CL-537, Vol. 33, p. 585) The 1880 Ohio census record, pg. 425D, Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Oh, says that he was born in Virginia in 1792 as were his parents. His wife was born in Pennsylvania as were her parents. She was 67 and he was 88 in this 1880 census. (CL-229)

According to readings of his cemetery stone, he died on Jan 11, 1886, age 93 yrs, 9 months and 19 days. This would make his birth date to be Mar 23, 1792 - and needs rechecking as it doesn't match previous information on his day of birth.

James was married to all three of the above women. Two of them are verified by their gravestones in Glenn Cemetery. His last two wives names can be verified in the administration of James Glenn's will. His first wife's nickname, Polly, is on her gravestone. She is listed as Mary in the 1850 and 1860 census. His marriage to his first wife, Mary (Polly) Tharp was the first marriage that occurred after Huntington Twp. was formed from Raccoon Twp. in 1810. She was the mother of all his children. (CL-411) A transcription of his second marriage follows: "James Glenn and Mary M. Hartsook: The State of Ohio Gallia County (...) I do hereby certify that on the 22nd day of December AD 1863 by (venture) of License issued by the Judge of the Probate Court of said county. I joined in marriage James Glenn and Mary M Hartsook Given under my hand the 29th day of December in the year 1863. H.R. How M.V.D." (CL-181)

The following will of James Glenn is from the Gallia Co. Courthouse. It is being transcribed with original spelling and punctuation retained by Linda Coate Dudick. P P Porter Benj (Martin) (CL-154) APPLICATION TO PROBATE WILL In the Probate Court of Gallia County, Ohio. James Glenn Deceased. And now comes Milton K. Glenn and produces for admission to Probate in said Court, the Last Will and Testament and the Codicil thereto of James Glenn late a resident of the Township of Huntington in said County, who died on the 11th day of January A.D. 1886. Said Will was not deposited during the lifetime of the Testator, in the office of the Judge of the Probate Curt of said County, for safe-keeping, as allowed by law. Said Testator died leaving Mary Glenn his widow and the following persons all his next of kin resident in the State of Ohio. Eliza Jane Clark, daughter, P.O. Box Rio Grande, O; Electa Radikin, daughter, Rio Grande, O; M.K. Sworn to before me and subscribed in my presence this 21 day of January A.D. 1886 John J. Thomas Probate Judge. (CL-153)

The administration of James Glenn's will gives us clues as to the married names of his unknown daughters as the following grandchildren are listed as living relatives: Grandsons, Curtis Davis, William G. (Davis) and Granddaughters, Rathsheba Dye(r), Mary Vie(r)s, and (Terza) Quickle. (CL-154,155,453) Unknown or additional Glenn children might prove to be any of the following Glenn's located in records about Gallia County. Elizabeth Mahala Jane Glenn, died July 5, 1831, aged 7 years, 8 months, 19 days (buried near likely grandparents, William and Ann Curry Glenn). (From her age, she is either James or brother George's daughter.) Born in 1823, she has the exact same tree symbol carved on her stone as her possible brother, James Carlille Glenn, son of James Glenn. Polly Ann Glenn, died Feb 2, 1837, aged 15 years 4 months and 12 days. She is buried near her grandparents, William and Ann Glenn in the center of Glenn Cemetery, as all their grandchildren that died as children seem to be. There is a tree symbol on her cemetery stone, like several other suspected children of this James and Polly Glenn. Franklin J. Glenn & Samantha had a d. Ella in 1869. George W. Glenn married to Jane J. Tyler who had a son Edmore F. in 1870. (I personally believe these last two are a generation after his children and are either grandsons or gr. nephews).

James married Mary (Polly) THARP, * on 31 Oct 1811 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA. Mary (daughter of Joseph THARP and Elsey (Elserman) CALHOUN) was born about 16 Dec 1790 in , , NC; died on 2 Sep 1863 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 5 Sep 1863 in Glenn Cemetery, Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA. 1. 2.  William GLENNWilliam GLENN was born on 22 Jun 1767 in Naked Creek, Augusta, VA (son of George GLENN and Mary YOUNG, (Half sister to Martha via Thru-Lines)); died on 31 May 1832 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 1 Jun 1832 in Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

William Glenn's marriage is in the Augusta Co., VA records as verified by Chakley's transcriptions: 1791, June 15th, Wm. Glenn and Anny Curry (married). Instead of his father who still appeared to be living, he was the bondsman for two of his sisters marriages, that of Sarah in 1792 and Martha in 1798. William Glenn purchased land from the Chillicothe Land Office that was on Raccoon Creek, near Vinton, Ohio in 1805. A few years previously, William, his wife Ann, and seven children had left Staunton, Augusta Co., Virginia and traveled down the Kanawha River to Point Pleasant, W.VA. where their 8th child, Robert Curry was born. It is thought that he lived out the remainder of his days in Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio and is buried in Glenn Cemetery with his wife. He was at the meeting in 1810/11 when Huntington Twp. in Gallia Co., Ohio was formed. He is listed on the Tax list for Gallia Co. in 1819 and the Census in 1820. He paid taxes on 1 house, 2 horses and 5 cattle in the Chattle lists of 1822 for Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio He is on Chattel Tax lists for Huntington Twp, Gallia Co., OH in 1823 owning the following land: 16-7-12,25 & 26 and again in 1827 owning a little less land: 16-7-25 & 26. Several of his sons moved west. Glenn County, California is named after one of them. (CL-413, 468, 499) In William's will he names his wife Amy Glenn and children Andrew Ewing and wife, Jane; John McCarley and wife Emmy, George Glenn, Hugh Glenn, Andrew Y. Glenn, Jonathan Adney and his wife, Electa and Harvey Glenn to which he all gave shares. He also mentioned sons Robert C. and Samuel Glenn of Hillsoborough that had already received their shares. It was probated Oct 21, 1837. James Glenn was the administrator. (CL-451) I have personally been able to visit the Glenn Cemetery just south of the "Entering Vinton" (Gallia Co.) sign on Route 325. It is probably on the property that belonged to his son Andrew Y. Glenn in the 1874 Gallia Co., Ohio census in section 25 of Huntington Twp. It is located behind a gate, a hundred feet or so down a gravel road on the left hand side of it's fork. It is a beautiful little cemetery set amongst the hills of Gallia. William and Ann are buried in the center of it, with a stone made in 1989 placed next to their difficult to read original giving the information from the first stone on it. An old large pine springs up behind it, surrounded by young children of the name Glenn who also died. Some of them are their children by dates, and some of them are obviously their grandchildren. A Joseph James Carlisle Glenn who died Feb 7, 1837, aged 3 yrs/3 months and 12 days was amongst these. A grave with the word "Infant" only and another next to it that was entirely unreadable were the other two in these. Off to the left hand column of the cemetery, starting near the gate are their sons and daughters families. The far right column of the cemetery (furthest from the gate) includes Indian Ewing, Holcombs and Matthews from memory. This last column we did not spend time reading, as they appeared more likely to be neighbors and members of their Presbyterian Church. The first stone that is visible as you enter the cemetery is that of Rev. Howe and his several wives and his 7 infants who died, all surrounding one single pillar type monument. This is at the front of the column that bears the children's families of some of William and Ann's sons and daughters or what I referred to as the left hand column above. In the center section where William and Ann are buried, an Elizabeth Mahala Jane Glenn who died July 5, 1831 is buried. She is obviously a daughter or granddaughter, but which is not certain. (CL-455) Shortly after William's death on Nov 22, 1838, there is a deed in the Gallia Co. courthouse entitled William Glenn to Andrew Y. Glenn for town lots in Porter, #15 &16. The deed itself states that Samuel Glenn, Robert C. Glenn and Harvey Glenn of the county of Hiland in Ohio sendeth their greetings and for the sum of 25 dollars give and released to Andrew Y. Glenn of Gallia Co., Ohio lots 15 and 16 in Porter, Ohio. These were all sons of William and Ann Curry Glenn. (CL-456) An interesting note from Tappan Adney in his pre-1950's research, states that 2 of William's sons moved to Glenn's Ferry, Snake R(iver), Idaho where they were cattlemen and married Indians. Since we know where some of the sons lived and died, the 2 sons being referred to are likely to be either Samuel, Hugh Tate, Wilson or Harvey Glenn. (CL-509)

William married Ann CURRY, * on 15 Jun 1791 in , Augusta, VA. Ann (daughter of Dr. Robert Addison CURRY, * and Elizabeth "Ann" MCCOMBE) was born on 22 Jun 1768 in , Augusta, VA; died on 13 May 1850 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 14 May 1850 in , Gallia, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Ann CURRY, *Ann CURRY, * was born on 22 Jun 1768 in , Augusta, VA (daughter of Dr. Robert Addison CURRY, * and Elizabeth "Ann" MCCOMBE); died on 13 May 1850 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 14 May 1850 in , Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

There is a Curry cemetery just north of Gallia County that could have relatives of Anne buried there. The Curry's lived between Vinton and Wilkesville. The Curry Church Cemetery is located in Section 22, 3 miles west of Wilkesville on Rt. 124, then one half mile south on Township Rt. 4. The Curry graves are surrounded by a terrace. (CL-306)

Ann is referred to as Amy in an abstracted copy of William's will. This might simply be a misinterpretation of the original or her nickname. I suspect it's a misspelling of a possible nickname, "Anny". (CL-451)

This Ann is the half sibling of her currently listed brother James Albert McComb via an autosomal DNA match. Ann is not listed as the daughter of Elizabeth McCombe and Robert Curry in Andrew McCombe's will. Therefore, it appears that Robert Curry had 3 wives. His 3rd wife if suggested to be Andrew McCombe's daughter Jane, also deceased. He does not name the children of Jane McCombe and Robert Curry.

    Children:
    1. 1. James GLENN was born on 4 Mar 1792 in , Augusta, VA; died on 11 Jan 1886 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 14 Jan 1886 in Glenn Cemetery, Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.
    2. Virginia Jane GLENN was born on 23 Aug 1794 in , Augusta, VA; died on 1 Nov 1849.

    8. Wilson GLENN was born after 1800; and died.

    10. Andrew Young GLENN was born on 19 Apr 1806 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died on 22 Aug 1888 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 25 Aug 1888 in Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.
    11. Harvey GLENN was born about 1808 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died after 1838.
    12. Wealtha Electa GLENN was born on 11 Jan 1811 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA; died on 30 Aug 1868 in Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 1 Sep 1868 in Glenn Cemetery, Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.

  1. 4.  George GLENNGeorge GLENN was born in 1730 in , Londonderry, Ireland (son of William GLENN and Jennie LITTLE); died before 14 Mar 1815 in , Augusta, VA; was buried in 1815 in Old Stone Church, Fort Defiance, Augusta, Virginia, United States.

    Notes:

According to David Glenn, the surname is Scottish and is related to the MacIntosh clan. Our Glenn's supposedly were Scottish borderlanders who moved from Scotland to (Co. Ulster?) Ireland and then to Virginia in the 18th century. (CL-345) Some second hand sources suggest that the Glenns first settled in Chester Co., PA between 1735 and 1740 (where Glennville is named after them) before moving to near Staunton, Augusta Co., VA in the 1740's to early 1750's where he lived on Naked Creek. Naked Creek is a stream located at 381816N Latitude and 0785452W Longtitude according to the USGS Mapping Service. (CL-413, 413d, 731) According to "Augusta Co, VA Heritage Book", he emigrated in 1742 with his friend Dr. Robert Curry along with other Glenns, Youngs (specifically his friend, Dr. Robert A. Young), Blacks and Blairs. In this account they landed in Philadelphia, PA and then traveled south settling on the lovely lands near Staunton on Naked Creek in Virginia. His large brick home was still standing in 2015 in Mt. Sydney, Virginia. The first evidence of any Glenn in Chalkley's records of Augusta Co., VA doesn't occur till 1754 when a James Glenn died there naming children William, James, John and Mary.

As for George Glenn, once a year, these Scotch Irish settlers would meet at his home to compete amongst themselves in a variety of sports and contests. These included weight lifting, running, jumping, boxing, wrestling, fencing, and sword dancing. He called his hill and hollow "Glenn Cose" after Scotland's "Glencoc". Part of the house that he built around 1750 was is still standing at Glen Cose. (CL-391, 676)

George Glenn was a private in the Revolutionary War, in Capt. Reuben Harrison's Co., Augusta, Virginia and Capt. Anderson's Co., Augusta, VA. He is listed in the DAR Patriot Index, Vol. I, pg. 271 as a private. (CL-171) (CL-259) His birthdate is truly not known. It is listed anywhere from 1715-1740. The earlier dates are unlikely since he was a private in the American Revolution and lived to 1815. I'm using the 1740 birthdate given on his Revolutionary War records. The 1740 birthdate would also better match his children's birthdates listed in the family bible of Hugh Glenn. (CL-185)

George Glenn is listed in the 1782 Taxpayers Lists for Virginia. He is the only Glenn listed in Augusta Co., VA and he owned no slaves according to this record. (CL-173) George Glenn does not appear in the 1790 census records for Virginia, but I have been unable to locate any census records for the supposed county of his residence, Augusta Co. They appear to have burned. (CL-172). (CL-185) He purchased 18 acres of land on Apr 7, 1796 on the waters of Naked Creek which lay between his current land and that of Robert Young's land. It also bordered on Peter Tetree's land. This is land that was very near where his wife's father's land was. Since the purchase of his original land is not in the records, it is possible his wife and inherited some land from her father. http://lva1.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/F/SYN8RBNYTXI23K6T2K3XB77J8PXDENKLATYSJIXXCXRAI1DF58-41373?func=full-set-set&set_number=007425&set_entry=000001&format=999

He is in the court records according to Chalkley: Aug 1796, William, Samuel, James Anderson and George Glenn (defendants) vs. William Young (orator).--Writ. Chancery, 27th September, 1793. William and Samuel were brothers. Petition by William Young, 1792, states that some years ago he employed George Nicholas to commence and prosecute this cause, that on removal of George (to Kentucky) from this county the case was entrusted to John Nicholas, who drew and filed the bill, shortly after which John also declined practicing in this court, and left his business to Robert Jouett, Esq., Attorney, who has also declined practicing in this court. Witness is aged and infirm. Petition for rehearing. Ellinor Young, wife of William Young, orator, 1st November, 1793. Samuel Anderson and George Glenn returned no inhabitants, 25th August, 1790. Samuel Anderson's deposition 15th February, 1791, before Benjamin Harrison, a Justice of Bourbon County. Pennsylvania executed on Samuel Anderson, 30th August, 1787.

It appears that George returned to Augusta Co., Virginia. George Glenn's Will was in Augusta Co., Will Book No. XI, pg. 458, : "In the name of God Amen, this 22nd day of December 1801, I George Glenn of Augusta County and State of Virginia, being in my ordinary health and sences do think it necessary at this time to make this my last Will and Testament first I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God through the merits of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ when he will be pleased to remove me and my Body I recommend to the Earth to be decently Buried at the discretion of my Executors herein after named, and all my worldly Estate both real and personal, I give bequeth and dispose of the same in the following manner. First I give and bequeath unto my beloved son Hugh Glen all my Estate in Land together with all my Horses, Cattle, Sheep and hogs, all my household Goods farming utencils and moveable property of every kind to him his heirs and assigns forever with this incumberance only that he will pay the following legacies two years after my decease - I give and bequeath unto my son James Glen his heirs or assigns the sum of five pounds I also give and bequeath unto my son William Glen his heirs or assigns the sum of six pounds - I give and bequeath unto my son in law Wert Miller and my Daughter Nancy the sum of five pounds - I give and bequeath unto my son in law Robert Young, and my Daughter Sarah the sum of five pounds - I give and bequeath unto my son in law Samuel Curry and my Daughter Mary the sum of five pounds - I give and bequeath unto my son in law John Mead five shillings - I also nominate and appoint my son Hugh Glen and no other to be the only Executor to this my last Will and testament and I renounce all other Will or Wills made by any time heretofore and rectifies this and no other to be my last Will and Testament under my hand and seal the date above. Signed, Sealed, published and pronounced in the Presence of John Anderson, Jas Anderson, Geo. Anderson. Signed: George Glenn Probated 11 March, 1815; commission as Justices of Augusta County to take deposition of George Anderson, an aged and infirm witness, returned executed 14th March 1815. Proved 14th March, 1815 (George Anderson is dead since above deposition; James and John Anderson are also dead). Executor qualifies." His will supposedly does not list his children in their birth order.

DAR records state that George actually died in 1801 and that it took this long for Hugh Glenn to have his father's estate administered. In any case, what we know is that George died between Dec. of 1801 and Mar. of 1815. He and his wife are buried in the old stone cemetery of the Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church at Fort Defiance. Their daughter Mary, his wife's father, James Young and his friend Dr. Robert Curry are buried there.

An excellent article at https://familysearch.org/photos/artifacts/12482240 based upon personal knowledge of George's great grandson, Robert Addison Glenn gives this account of George. "GEORGE GLENN was born about 1720 in the northern part of Ireland near Londonderry. He was Scotch-Irish Presbyterian. When he was about fifteen years of age he married in Ireland, a Miss Young, also a Scotch-Irish Presbyterian. Shortly after their marriage he and his bride immigrated to America with a party of other Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, among whom was Dr. Robert Curry and his bride Ann Curry, and others.

This emigrant party first came into Pennsylvania about 1745, but immediately afterwards came south with the tide of Scotch-Irish emigrants who were then settling in the great Valley of Virginia. George Glenn patented and settled on what is known as the David Hunter, Sr. farm on the headwaters of Middle Branch of Naked Creek, Augusta County, Virginia, and built the old residence now standing on the farm. By his said wife George Glenn had seven children, three sons and four daughters, viz.: Sarah, Nancy, Margaret, William, James, Hugh, Mary."

My great Aunts wondered if this line of Glenns might be related to the American Astronaut, John Glenn. In John Glenn's ancestry from Coleraine, Ireland to here, I have not found a connection. (CL-261)

George married Mary YOUNG, (Half sister to Martha via Thru-Lines) before 1763. Mary (daughter of James YOUNG, * and Wife 1) was born before 1748 in of Cecil Co., Maryland; died on 15 May 1789 in , Augusta, VA, USA; was buried in Fort Defiance, Augusta County, Virginia, United States of America. 2. 5.  Mary YOUNG, (Half sister to Martha via Thru-Lines)Mary YOUNG, (Half sister to Martha via Thru-Lines) was born before 1748 in of Cecil Co., Maryland (daughter of James YOUNG, * and Wife 1); died on 15 May 1789 in , Augusta, VA, USA; was buried in Fort Defiance, Augusta County, Virginia, United States of America.

    Notes:

Sarah (or Mary in some sources) was highly likely to be born before 1750 as she was having children in 1763 according to her son's family bible. I have seen her birthdate in second hand sources as Sep. 27, 1727. I suspect that this might be too early or that she was married previous to her marriage with George Glenn. (CL-411) DNA evidence absolutely shows that my Sarah Young is descended from John and Annie Houston's ancestral tree. My mother matches autosomal DNA betwee 3.5 and 5.7 cM's with descendants of this line named Cahouf, Shannon Parnell, SMDonovan (A200104), L McElhaney (A798988), melstepp (A735224), Betty McLain (A764877), Ihakel (A787917), Donna Stone (A859372), and R. Pace Williams (T064653) just to name of a few on gedmatch. The are cousins on chromosome X or 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, and 14 with the most commonality on chromosome X.

    Children:
    1. Nancy Agnes GLENN was born on 10 Dec 1763 in Naked Creek, Augusta, VA; died in in Of Highland, OH.
    2. James GLENN was born on 1 May 1765 in Naked Creek, Augusta, VA; died after 1822 in Of Huntington Twp., Gallia, OH, USA.
    3. 2. William GLENN was born on 22 Jun 1767 in Naked Creek, Augusta, VA; died on 31 May 1832 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 1 Jun 1832 in Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.
    4. Martha GLENN was born on 29 Jan 1772; died before 1801.
    5. Hugh GLENN was born on 11 Dec 1774 in Naked Creek, Augusta, VA; died on 24 Jan 1834 in Mt. Sidney, Augusta, VA; was buried in Fort Defiance, Augusta County, Virginia, United States of America.
    6. Sarah GLENN was born before 1778; died in 1798.
    7. Mary GLENN was born on 9 Jun 1778; died on 23 Apr 1863 in , Augusta, VA; was buried about 26 Apr 1863 in , Augusta, VA.

  3. 6.  Dr. Robert Addison CURRY, *Dr. Robert Addison CURRY, * was born on 10 Nov 1717 in Londonderry, County Ulster, Ireland (son of Sir Robert William "True" CURRY, IV and Martha GRAY); died on 5 Jan 1804 in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia, USA; was buried about 8 Jan 1804 in Ft. Defiance, , VA, USA.

    Notes:

Robert Curry is listed as part of the Civil Service in the Revolutionary War from Augusta Co., Virginia in the DAR PATRIOT INDEX, VOL I., p.170. (CL-171,175) (CL-270)

Birth Order of Robert's children is not in any way in order on my family group sheet. The order has been conjectured as similar to how Robert lists his children in his will. Ann and Samuel's birth dates are the only ones known with some certainty. His will lists them in this order: Samuel, Margaret, Mary, Ann, William, James, Robert, Alexander and Isaiah. I personally suspect that the daughter’s birth order should be intermixed throughout the order of the sons because of some calculations I did from war records. Sons James and Robert were enlisted with their father, Robert, in 1783. That makes their likely birth order before their sister Ann's of 1768, not after.

Doris Rawlings received a letter second hand that stated Dr. Robert Curry was from Antrim, Ireland. Dr. Frey, a competent researcher in this family, states that he was born in Londonderry, Ulster Co., Ireland instead. This fits with the fact that he was of Scotch/Irish descent. The Scotch Irish were mostly from Ulster, Northern Ireland, across from Scotland who traveled to America, staying a brief time in Pennsylvania before settling in Augusta Co., Virginia. They were usually Presbyterians. They were participants in many wars of the area, first the French, the Indians, then finally the British. The Indian Wars were from 1753-1764 and the Revolution was from 1775-1781 with peace not formally concluded until 1783. (CL-188)

He immigrated from Londonderry, Ireland to Pennsylvania late in the year of 1736 arriving in the Port of Philadelphia. According to the book "Men of Mark in Virginia", he was also born in Londonderry. He traveled with possibly 3 brothers. He and his brother, William purchased 200 acres in Lancaster Co., PA on Jan 16, 1737. Both of them removed to Augusta Co., VA in late 1747 or early 1748 though the Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy by Virkus, c. 1928 stated that he arrived in Augusta Co., VA in 1753.

He married first in Pennsylvania and possibly twice from some second-hand sources like "My Augusta.". The only wife that has been verified is Ann Currie. He and his wife, Ann, are listed as cousins in a letter from Donna Lewis dated 1993. This is supported by research from Dr. Frey. Dr. Robert Curry purchased 200 acres on Naked Creek near John Young's and friend, George Glenn's land in Augusta Co., VA on Mar 10, 1748/49. He was the progenitor of the Currys living on Naked Creek. In 1750, Robert and William were joined by their brothers, Nathan, David and Isaiah. (CL-468)

Robert Curry farmed his land, but he had also studied medicine and taught fencing for several years. (CL-568) In 1753, he had 135 of these acres on Naked Creek surveyed by Tomas Lewis. In 1780 he surveyed an adjoining 50 acres also on Naked Creek. His possible father-in-law, Andrew McCombe, seems to have helped him purchase 130 of these acres. Robert Curry is listed in the military service throughout this extensive amount of time. Robert Curry qualified as Ensign of Militia on Sept. 21 1763, Captain of Militia on August 16, 1774 and Major of Militia by 1776. He was listed as Capt. in the French and Indian Wars and as Capt. of the Home Guard in the Revolutionary War. For his service in the French and Indian Wars, he was granted a tract of land in Highland Co., Ohio named "Crab Bottom". This is possibly the land that later Curry and Glenn descendants moved to. (CL-568)

He was appointed road overseer from Skidmore's Camp up the North River to the first main Fork above the Great Lick on Mar. 18, 1783. He is also listed with sons James and Robert in Capt. Given's and Campbell's Companies in 1783. (CL-194b,c) He was living in Greenbrier Co., VA from 1783-1786. That is now in West Virginia, slightly S.E. of Augusta Co., VA. (CL-172) In record after record for Augusta Co., Virginia he is listed as the "Teste" or Witness for many legal proceedings. In Deed Book 26, pg. 344 he was issued a Patent, 1st Sept., 1780. (The item in patent was not mentioned.) He was an elder in the "Old Stone Church" in Augusta Co., Virginia. It can easily be surmised that he was a well-respected citizen from these court records. (CL-194d).

This Robert Curry has been confused with Robert (b. 1730) who was the son of Robert and Jane Seawright Curry from Pennsylvania. It is said that he married an Ann also (though this simply could be a mix-up with our Dr. Robert who was born in 1717). (CL-305,306, 391) Proof that our Dr. Robert, father of our Ann Glenn, was born in 1717 first comes from a Vol. I, D.A.R. record. The D.A.R. information is supported in Dr. Robert Curry's Tombstone Inscription taken by an unknown reader from Old Fort Defiance, August Co., VA. On that he was born Nov. 10, 1717 and died Jan. 5, 1800 and was buried with wife Ann Curry of Ulster Co., Ireland. (CL-270) The death date does not match when he wrote his will in 1803. The tombstone was erected by his descendent, Charles Curry around 1898. The unknown reader described it as a large new stone erected by children of Robert Addison and Hanna Anderson Curry. According to researcher, Linda Baker, the person simply transcribed the tombstone incorrectly. It clearly states that he died Jan. 5, 1804.

After the Charles who had erected the tombstone, died in 1941, the Curry family home that had been lived in by six generations of Currys was finally sold in 1946. His tombstone states: "Dr. Curry was Captn in French and Indian War Captn of Home Guards during the Revolutionary War. Elder of Augusta Church. Robert and Ann are Natives of Ulster, Ireland and were amoung the Pioneers and Nation Builders of this Country."

In the book, "From Corner to Corner with John Curry Sr.," it states, the first Currys in the Shenandoah Valley are reported to have been Dr. Robert Curry and his brothers, Nathaniel, David and Isaiah who reached Augustus Co. in 1747-48. (CL-207). These brothers names fit with the children of William Curry and Sally Young from Antrim, IRE. (CL-275) Following is Robert Curry's Will, transcribed as written 29 Dec 1803 - Augusta Co. Court Will Book, Vol. VIII, pg. 417: "In the name of God amen I Robert Curry of the State of Virginia and County of Augusta being of advanced years but of perfect mind and memory Thanks to God for it and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die and after death the judgment I do hereby make this my last Will and testament in names and form following and first I recommend my Soul to go to Who gave it and my body to the earth from where it was taken to be buried in a Cristian and decent like maner at the discresion of my Executors here named and as for what worldly goods it hath pleased God to bestow on me in this life it is my will and desire they be disposed of as followeth and first I leave and bequeath unto my beloved wife Ann my dwelling house with all the furniture belonging to it and likewise my Negro wench China to be for her own use during her natural life and to be disposed of her at her decease as she sees proper her and her issue together with two cows & two sheep all to disposed of by her as she sees proper at her decease and as for my real Estate to with my lands I alow my son Samuel the benefit of my lands during my wife Ann life time and at her decease I alow him to keep the land or sell it at the rate of eight dollars an acre if sold to be divided as follows to wit 35 to be divided among them my Daughter Margaret Nickel 5A and my Daughter Mary Erwin 25A and my Daughter Ann Glen the sum of 5A to be taken out of the whole price of the the land I alow my son Samuel to Keep if he sees proper providing he pay to his five brothers William Curry James Curry Robert Curry Alexander and Isah at the rate of eight dollars an acre and provided my son Samuel Should see cause to keep the land he is to pay each of the Legatees in Six years after my wifes decease and I do constitute and appoint my two beloved sons Robert & William (crossed out) Samuel Curry Executors of this my last Will and testament and I do hereby revoke and ___ al former Wills either by word or wrighting ratifying this to be my last Will and testament in ___ I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 29th Day of December the year one thousand eight hundred 3 -- Witnesses present James Young Sen. (his mother's gr. nephew?), Hugh Brown - Andrew Young (His mother's gr.gr. nephew?). Proved 24th December, 1804. Samuel qualifies." (CL-185, 468)

He died near Staunton in Augusta Co., VA after this writing in 1804. The family home that his son Samuel was bequeathed is located "six miles northwest of Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church and five miles west of Mt. Sidney in the "hills of Judea" on the waters of Naked Creek." (CL-391d) As for his sons, there are two Samuel Curry's living in Augusta Co, Virginia from at least 1800-1811 who married at similar times. Samuel Curry is listed as marrying Mary Glenn, d. of George Glenn, on Mar. 25 1800. (This disagrees with info. on Mary Glenn Curry's tombstone that says she was the daughter of James Glenn). There is also a Samuel Curry listed with wife Polly in the 1811 settlement of the Seawright estate who lived outside Augusta Co., VA. It does mention three Curry's in this will. Robert Curry and Jane (possible son of Dr. Robert, William or John Curry Sr.), Samuel Curry and Polly (possible son of Dr. Robert Curry) and Nicolas Curry and Sarah, (possible son of John Curry, Sr.) and Samuel Curry and Polly. It does state that all of the listed Curry's no longer live in Virginia (CL-194c)

The 1810 Federal Census Records for Augusta Co., VA list the following Curry's as living in Augusta Co., VA. Five of these are possible sons of Robert Curry. There is also a Benjamin Curry, probably the son of William who was a likely cousin of our Dr. Robert Curry in the same area. (I deduce that William and Robert were cousins instead of brothers because of a possible marriage between their children: Elizabeth Curry and Alexander Curry on Oct. 6, 1795. Elizabeth was of age, the d. of William Curry. I presume that Alexander Curry, son of Robert was the spouse, as he is the right age and the only other known Alexander Curry in Augusta County besides Elizabeth's brother also named Alexander.) These are the only Curry's listed as living in Augusta Co., VA in 1810 and they all live in close proximity. The categories are: Males, age 0-10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45, 45 & up. Females, ages 0-10, 10-16, 16-26, 26-45, 45 & up. (CL-181) Alexander, pg 325; 20001-10010-00 Benjamin, pg.325; 00010-00011-00 Isaiah, pg 325; 20010-20010-00 * James, pg 325; 40201-22010-00 * Robert, Curry: pg. 326: 00001-42201-00 * Samuel, pg 325; 20110-30010-00 * Samuel, pg 325; 21010-20011-10 William, pg 325; 12301-00001-00 * Of these: Isaiah, James, Robert, Samuel and William are possibly Dr. Robert Curry's sons or even grandsons.

Dr. married Elizabeth "Ann" MCCOMBE about 1750. Elizabeth (daughter of Andrew MCCOMBE and Rebecca YOUNG, daughter of James CURRIE, daughter of Andrew MCCOMBE and Jane REABURN) was born on 25 Sep 1727 in Londonderry, Ulster, Ireland; died on 15 May 1819 in Augusta County, Virginia, United States of America; was buried about 18 May 1819. Notes:

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  William GLENN was born on 15 Sep 1690 in Londenberry, Ireland (son of David GLEN and Margaret GRAY); died in 1780 in Augusta, Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

This William is the supposed father of George Glenn of Augusta Co., VA. He might also be the father of a William and Hugh Glenn who fought in the Revolutionary War in VA in the same time period as his son George. A James Glenn died in Augusta Co., Va in 1754 leaving children William, James, John and Mary. This James could be William's father or son.

The Glenn family's name originated in 1093 were of Norman ancestry, and came with William the Conqueror into Scotland. The name apparently comes from lands where they lived in 1250 A.D. By the year 1300, they were one of the great houses of Scotland. In 1322, Margaret, the daughter of the famous Robert Bruce, married Sir Robert Glenn. They are the ancestors of this Glenn family, a tradition past down clear to the 1900's. These Glenns were Scotch Irish, because in 1606, Sir James Hamilton and Montgomery obtained large land grants in Ireland which they parcelled out in large chunks to persons like Reverend Patrick Hamilton. The Reverend received his land on Nov. 15, 1606 in East Hollywood, Down County, Ireland. James Glenn, son of Glenlora Glenn and John Glenn, son of David Glenn both secured grants of land from Reverend Hamilton and enjoyed the "privaleges of English subjects." These Glenns were the ancestors of most of the Scotch Irish Glenns and are likely the direct ancestors of this Glenn line. The pattern of the Scotch Irish that moved into Augusta Co., VA was from Ireland (where they had an ethical problem with marrying into the Irish), to Pennsylvania, then often Maryland before coming to Augusta Co., VA. The question is how are we related to the Scotch Glenns located in Ireland. No one to my knowlege knows who our William's father was. (CL-474)

William married Jennie LITTLE. Jennie was born about 1700 in Augusta, Virginia, USA; died in in Virginia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Jennie LITTLE was born about 1700 in Augusta, Virginia, USA; died in in Virginia, USA.
    Children:
    1. 4. George GLENN was born in 1730 in , Londonderry, Ireland; died before 14 Mar 1815 in , Augusta, VA; was buried in 1815 in Old Stone Church, Fort Defiance, Augusta, Virginia, United States.
    2. Henry GLENN was born in 1737 in Londonderry, Ireland; died on 14 Mar 1815 in Augusta County, Virginia.

  3. 10.  James YOUNG, * was born before 1729 in Antrim, Antrim, Ireland (son of William Young, Sr.); died on 16 Nov 1790 in , Augusta, VA, USA; was buried in Augusta Stone Cemetery, Augusta, VA, USA.

    Notes:

We do not know who the parents of James, John or Robert Sr. of the Naked Creek, Augusta Co., Virginia are with certainty. I have my theory based upon 40 years of research and the only first-hand evidence there is.

Naked Creek appears to be about 22 miles northeast of the Beverly Manor Plat with the Borden Manor area being in between the 2 though this is a guess based upon a composite of maps that I could be judging incorrectly. Naked Creek literally is on the border between Rockingham County and Augusta Co., Virginia.

We do know that DNA evidence absolutely shows that my James Young is related to John and Annie Houston. He is likely a nephew of them.

As for the subject of this biography, James of Naked Creek, Augusta Co., VA. We know he interacted with John's children of Naked Creek. John bought land in 1748 on Naked Creek, Augusta Co., and James came from Cecil Co., MD in 1768 to buy land nearby John. We also know that my James is too young to have been the son of John and Annie as he is believed to have fought in the American Revolution from his possible gravestone. Nor is James the likely son of John and Annie's sons Robert (not in will) or Dr. John (died without heirs). James isn't the son of James C. Young. James C. had a son James, but his son James definitely died in the early 1760's. This James on Naked Creek died in 1790. My current best theory is that James and peer, John, both of Naked Creek, are nephews of the early (1730-1740's) Youngs in Augusta County.

It is possible that this James Young was the one in 1760 who was delineated by the Clerk of Courts as James Young, "Taylor." We don't know which one was the tailor at this point in time other than we know it wasn't his possible nephew or 1st cousin, once removed named James. He might be Constable James in the following record from Chalkley, V. II: 1767--Constables: Fras Graham, Jno. Griffith, Jos. Dennis, Thos. Cartmil, Solomon Carpenter, Wm. Jemmison, Jno. Clark, Charles Campbell, Wm. McMullen, Wm. Paxton, Hugh Hicklin, James Young.

His most likely land purchase is in the following Chaukley V. 3 record: Page 164.--22d November, 1769. Samuel Black and Rebecca ( ) to James Young, of Sissel County, Maryland, (Cecil Co., MD) ? 90, 200 acres on a branch of Naked Creek conveyed to Samuel by Thomas Watterson, James McConnal's land. James is listed as being of Cecil Co., MD in 1769 when he purchased land on Naked Creek, Augusta Co., Virginia. His likely brother, John had moved there in 1748.

There is a well-researched theory by Katherine Bushman. According to her, Cecil Co., MD Youngs are almost non-existant meaning that it was a stopover before moving onto Augusta Co., VA. There is a Jacob and John Young there in 1748. A William Young is a bondman in 1756 there. A Robert Young bought goods in Cecil Co., MD in 1758 and a James Young is also only mentioned once in that region. All of these but Jacob are believed to be relatives of the Youngs in Augusta Co., Virginia or Youngs that moved to Augusta Co., Virginia. Of these, William (son of Andrew Lamont Young) is my best theory on the parent of James and John.

He is the James Young in the following Chalkley transcription from Volume 3, "Page 546.--6th December, 1774. Thomas Watterson's will, farmer--To wife Mary to Nevey William Watterson. Executors, wife Mary and James Bell. Teste: James Young, Elizabeth (mark) McCamas, George Glenn. Proved, 17th February, 1778, by Young and Glenn. Widow Mary qualifies.

James's Young's will in Augusta Co., VA, Will Book VII, pg. 292, are in this abstract by Dr. Robert Frey. "16 Nov 1790: To Agnes Miller, wife to Wert Miller, daughter to George Glenn; to James Glenn, son to George Glenn; to William Glenn, son to George Glenn; to Sarah Glenn, daughter to George Glenn; to Martha Glenn, daughter to George Glenn; to Hugh Glenn, son to George Glenn; to Mary Glenn, daughter to George Glenn, infant; to Margaret, Esther, Elizabeth, Martha, John, James, William Bing, children to John Bing; to son-in-law George Glenn, to son-in-law John Bing, executors. Teste: Robert Young, Jr; Robert Young, Sr.; Sarah Young (Wife or daughter of Robert Young?). Proved 21st December 1790, by all witnesses. George Glenn (Son-in-law) and Wm. Young [son of Robert Young Sr. or gr. nephew]"

Most of his witnesses are one or two generations younger than James indicating again that he was quite elderly at the time of the writing of his will. James Young apparently only bequeathed items to grandchildren of two daughters. (CL-185) (Note that these Glenn grandchildren are listed in the identical order in Hugh Glenn's family bible and that Mary was simply age 12 at the time. Her brother Hugh Glenn, age 16, was not named an infant.) (CL-185) It's likely that his second wife had died by the time he wrote his will. Since he gave household goods to the Glenn children, it also suggests that he could have been living with them at the time of the writing of his will. Because James named no son in his will, it is assumed that he had no sons. I wouldn't rule that out however, as many Young's from this area had started moving to other territories like Kentucky and Tennessee by 1790 when he wrote his will and James died well enough into old age that he could have had a son die previously to him. The people who witness James' will all lived on or near Naked Creek, Augusta Co., VA when he wrote it. They would be his relatives. Namely, Robert Sr. Young could be a brother to him, possible son of William Young or Robert Young of Cecil Co., MD and Naked Creek, Augusta Co., VA. and his possible sister-in-law or niece, Sarah. Robert Jr. Young would be Robert Sr.'s son. When Robert Young Sr. died and left a will in 1793, he names George Glenn (James' son-in-law) as his executor.

I am theorizing that William Young of Cecil Co., MD is the father of our James Young because of the following record in Chalkley. "*Bond by William Young, of Cecil County, Province of Maryland, to James Hettly, of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, dated 29th April, 1756, assigned to James Young, 28th February, 1775." This suggests that William Young had died, and the bond he had posted for James Hettley was transferred to the responsibility of his eldest living son, James in 1775. In decades of searching, this is the only connection I have found for our James of Cecil Co., MD and Naked Creek, Augusta Co. to the previous generation. William was the son of Andrew Lamont Young. This would explain the DNA matches I have to Andrew Lamont Young via his son, John Young married to Annie Houston. It seems likely to me that our James of Naked Creek is the likely brother to John of Naked Creek also and the Robert Young Sr. who witnessed his will. John, James and Robert would be sons of William in this hypothesis.

According to "Augusta County Heritage Book", James died on Dec. 21, 1790 and was in the American Revolution as stated on his gravestone.

This record applies to him in Chaukley, Vol. 2, Page 427.--James Young's estate appraised 8th January, 1791.

Here are the other Chaukley Records that might apply to this James Young.

Joseph Lang, father of Henry, many years ago purchased a tract of land from George Robinson, who was to take out patent in Joseph's name, but it was actually issued in name of Samuel Lang, deceased, brother of Henry, for half the tract. Samuel was of very poor intellect and quite an idiot. Joseph died and left will dated 11th September, 1757, wherein he gave a part of his land "The Welch Cabin" unto Samuel. James Young persuaded Samuel to convey his land to him, in consideration that James paid him in victuals, Bill to set aside conveyance.

    Children:
    1. 5. Mary YOUNG, (Half sister to Martha via Thru-Lines) was born before 1748 in of Cecil Co., Maryland; died on 15 May 1789 in , Augusta, VA, USA; was buried in Fort Defiance, Augusta County, Virginia, United States of America.

  5. 12.  Sir Robert William "True" CURRY, IVSir Robert William "True" CURRY, IV was born on 15 Jun 1690 in Belfast, Antrim, Ireland.; died on 13 Mar 1748 in Rockingham, Augusta, Surry County, Virginia, USA.

    Notes:

The surname Curry means "marsh" or "boat" and first applied to Scotchman who lived in a place of that name in the Marsh at Midlothian, Scotland. (CL-391) The birthdates and birth order for his children literally are not consistent in the sources I've seen and could be completely wrong.

The following record from Chaukley probably applies to this William. 1748-49, March 10th--William Curry, 200, near John Young, Thos. Waterson, Naked Creek (c. g. e. p.). According to "Early Settlers of Virginia", this purchase belonged to this William Sr. who was married to Sarah Young. Chaukley's, Vol. 1 entry might also apply. Christian vs. Curry.--William Curry (near Staunton) to Israel Christian, debtor. 1769, July 2; 1761, item by son, William; 1763, 24th February; 1766, to your account at the Stone House with Walter Stewart. Sworn to, 29th December, 1766.

He is the first common ancestor I have with kkstubbs38 who descends through Sir Robert and his daughter, Jane (Jenny) Curry appearing to be born about 1712. This cousin is a half cousin meaning that one of us does NOT descend through Lady Sarah but through a different wife instead.

I have a second cousin who descends through John Curry, b. 1730 instead who is a half cousin. This now suggests, Sir Robert William had 3 wives. We don't know which of his children belong to whom or his 3rd wife's name.
