  1. 1.  Henry COTTE was born in 1591 in Drayton Parish, Somerset, England; was christened on 11 Jul 1591 in Drayton, Somerset, England (son of Johne COTTE and Unknown); and died.

Family/Spouse: Unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. Henrie COTTE was born before 1615 in Of Drayton Parish, Somerset, England; died in in Of Drayton Parish, Somerset, England.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Johne COTTE was born in 1562 in Drayton, Somerset, England; was christened on 1 Feb 1562 in St. Catherine, Drayton, Somerset, England (son of COTE); died after 16 Oct 1621 in Drayton Parish, Somerset, England.

    Notes:

I think it highly likely that John was a brother to Marmaduke (m. to Mary Somner) of Bridgewater and Curry Rivel by age and naming patterns. The children and grandchildren of the earliest Bridgewater Cotte's moved into Curry Rivel, North Petherton and Drayton which would be consistent with this pattern. This Johne also had a grandson named Marmaduke which only carries down from the Cotte family in Bridgewater. That generation of Coate's consistently had their name spelled as Cotte in the first hand records also supporting this relationship. This is circumstantial evidence and still needs proved. None of the children whom were christened in this generation had their parents names given in the records. He left a will in Drayton, Somerset, England in 1621: "By the will dated 16th October 1621, John Coate of Drayton gave unto his daughter Marye a legacy, and to his son Henry some household goods, and the rest of his goods and chattels to his wife who was appointed Sole executrix of his will. Will proven at Taunton, Nov 1621." (Park) This is a very early date for records in Somerset and he could easily be a brother or cousin of the Marmaduke of Bridgewater who died in 1624.

From christening records we know that he had more children than he named in his will. His will survived the bombings in Taunton, so that suggest he was a man of wealth as his was copied in Canterbury at the time. His will does not suggest that he had land suggesting that he had already dispersed it to his oldest son or other sons before his will was made. Ex. Henry is the oldest verified son by baptismal records yet he is willed no land and Mary is the youngest by the fact she was named Mary after her older sister Mary died in 1594. These incongruities support him having additional children unnamed in the will. Land and court records will be important to clarify this family further. His parents lived in Drayton as that is where he was baptised. Their names were not given. There are two other younger possible relatives in Drayton that are not close enough in age to be his sons. They were Opper Cootte (b. bef. 1575) and Christopher Cote (b. bef 1577)
