  1. 2.  Andrew James CLARKAndrew James CLARK was born on 8 Feb 1860 in , Gallia, OH, USA (son of James A. CLARK and Eliza Jane Hoge GLENN); died on 3 Jul 1935 in Raccoon Twp., Gallia, OH, USA; was buried on 5 Jul 1935 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH.

    Notes:

I have a triangulation at MyHeritage with Mark Henson and Teresa Kandor where our MRCA couple starts with this A. James Clark and his wife on chromosome 7 proving them as our ancestors by autosomal dna. A. James Clark and Lola Tobin lived in Columbus for a while, then moved to Thurman (Centerville) where he had a little store. A barber shop was connected to it where his son William Edward Clark was a barber. Then, A.J., as he was called, set up a general store in Rio Grande. It was connected to a very large house: Three floors, fireplace in every bedroom, the dining room table could hold 30 people, chimes were rung to let everyone know dinner was served. A.J. first bought merchandise for the store at a cost of $900.00. He made about $1000.00 a year in profit from this shop. He and Talmadge Cottrell, his son-in-law, finally bought and owned the house and adjacent store after several years business. (CL-103) When I saw it on a 1979 visit to Rio Grande, it was being used as a dormitory for Rio Grande College and was a ghost of the grandness that it used to be. As of 1985, it was no longer standing.

According to tax receipts for A. J. Clark's property (now in the possession of Linda Coate), he owned multiple pieces of property. Around 1900 he owned 50 acres in section 34 and section 26 in Raccoon Township, Gallia Co., Ohio Fifty acres adjoining his property in section 34 belonged to his wife Lola C. Clark in a 1900 map. (CL-12) In Dec. of 1936: Lot 22, 23, 27, and 28 in Rio Grande and Lot 41. (CL-DOC) A. James Clark had a very good mind and was mathematically inclined.

His newspaper obituary states that he was a "well known and leading citizen ... the head of an excellent family." He was well loved in his community. (CL-DOC) He was a member of the Methodist Church in Rio Grande. He died of a heart attack while playing checkers, a game he truly enjoyed. He and his neighbors played checkers around the pot bellied stove in his grocery store and talked about politics and religion. He didn't like the children sitting on the store's counter top. He told them they would have to pay him if they did. He spit out his tobacco while driving his car and the whole family would duck to keep away from the flying tobacco. He lost his glasses often, and usually they could be found on top of his head!

Most of these recollections were provided by my mother, Marcena Irene Clark Coate, a granddaughter of A. James Clark. Her strongest memory of her grandmother, Lola Tobin Clark, happened when Marcena wore her first pair of slacks to her grandmother's house. Lola firmly reprimanded her saying, "Girls don't wear pants. Go home and take them off. Don't ever wear them again." Marcena didn't wear them for years afterwards, either. (CL-53, 103)

Andrew married Lola Cora TOBIN on 7 Jan 1883 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH, USA. Lola (daughter of Wesley TOBIN and Mary Ann DANNER) was born on 5 Feb 1862 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died on 8 Jun 1940 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH; was buried about 11 Jun 1940 in , Gallia, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Lola Cora TOBINLola Cora TOBIN was born on 5 Feb 1862 in , Gallia, OH, USA (daughter of Wesley TOBIN and Mary Ann DANNER); died on 8 Jun 1940 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH; was buried about 11 Jun 1940 in , Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Lola owned property adjoining what use to be property of her husbands in section 34 of Raccoon Township in 1900. Other divisions of section 34 belonged to all of her brothers and sisters except for Sonora. As she received her father's farm from her father, this could be that same property. (CL-12,142) Lola Tobin Clark made many quilts. She specifically gave one of the "Grandmother's Flower Garden" patterned quilt to her granddaughter Wanda as she was the oldest daughter in that side of the family. She asked her to give it to her oldest daughter. Her daughter Grace Ann still has it in safe keeping. (CL-290) Her birth date and mother's maiden name appear to be incorrect on her death certificate as 10/16/1862 d. of Mary Gaskins. The info was provided by her son, William E. Clark, but neither piece of info correlates with any other document found on her. Her death certificate stated that she was a housekeeper in her own home for 50 years. The last date of her occupation at this task was in 1935, five years before her death. She died of Cardio Vascular Reval Disease. (CL-DOC)

    Children:
    1. William Edward CLARK was born on 7 Dec 1883 in Raccoon Twp., Gallia, OH, USA; died on 19 Feb 1958 in Gallipolis, Gallia, OH, USA; was buried on 22 Feb 1958 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH.
    2. Sonora Edith CLARK was born on 28 Oct 1885 in Cora, Gallia, OH; died on 23 Oct 1963 in Columbus, Franklin, OH; was buried in Columbus, Franklin, OH.
    3. 1. Mary Marette CLARK was born on 24 Jul 1888 in Cora, Gallia, OH; died on 4 Jul 1972 in Columbus, Franklin, OH; was buried on 7 Jul 1972 in Union Cemetery, Columbus, Franklin, OH.

    7. Lola Bernice CLARK was born on 18 Oct 1905 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH; was christened after 18 Oct 1905 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH; died on 29 Apr 1995 in Adrian, Lenawee, MI, USA.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  James A. CLARKJames A. CLARK was born on 22 Jun 1824 in Kentucky Or Virginia (son of William D. CLARK, * and Susanah HUNTER); died on 1 Mar 1902 in Bidwell, Gallia, OH, USA; was buried in 1902 in Old Pine Cemetery, Raccoon Twp., Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

James A. Clark enlisted in the Civil War, Oct. 10, 1863 in E. Wiseman's Co., Rio Grande , Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He was a private in the army, Co. M, 7th Regiment, O.V.C. (CL-99) He came down with tuberculosis while in the army and was discharged on July 10, 1863. This information was from the grave registrations of persons in the military in Ohio.

However, it disagrees with the enlistment and discharge dates his family gave in the 1890 census. According to them, he enlisted on Oct. 9, 1862 and was discharged on June 29, 1863 with paralysis of his right arm. His post office address was Rio Grande, Raccoon Twp. (CL-22, 363)

A third account in "Gallia Co. Ohio Soldier Discharge Book, Vol.1" by Trowbridge gives the following: James J. Clark, Sergeant, enrolled Oct. 10 1862; discharged July 3, 1865, Nashville, Tenn.; born in Gallia Co., Ohio, age 35 years; Height: 6'1"; Complexion: light; Hair: light; Eyes: gray; Occupation: farmer, Vol.1, pg.44. According to my grandmother, he was said to be of full English descent. However, his very tightly curled hair could explain the African heritage in DNA tests that come through this line. We now know that this heritage comes from Mali. If he is the ancestor who had African blood, he would have been about 25% African with his likely grandmother having been a slave.

He lived with his son, A.J. Clark and his family after breaking his hip, around 1899 or so. He was senile at the end of his life and tried setting his son's house on fire. (CL-104) He died at his son, Andrew James Clark's farm, 2 miles from Rio Grande, in 1902. He is listed as a Tanner by trade on his death record. (CL-19)

James's wife, Eliza Jane died in Dayton, Ohio at the home of Lola (Tobin) Clarks according to my great aunt Sophie. Aunt Sophie remembers her for the pretty aprons she wore. (CL-105) One of Jim and Eliza's son's, Henry-who went by the name of Joe, married a woman with some black ancestry. They never had children- but tried to adopt a daughter whom they dearly loved. To the great grief of Uncle Joe, this daughter was taken away from them before the adoption was final. (CL-105b)

Joe was the informant on his brother James A.'s death certificate. In this document he stated that their mutual father was born near Cora, Ohio. (CL-DOC) This information led to the discovery of James A. Clark's parentage above. The only fact that is not clear is where James A. was born. His parent's 1850 Ohio census record lists him as being born in Virginia. He lists his birth place differently in every document he is in: Gallia Co., Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky.

He is in the 1850 non-population census for Gallia Co., Ohio. He was living in Walnut Twp. next to a William H. Clark and near a Samuel Clark. The William (H.) was likely his father and the Samuel could have been one of his brother's middle names. In 1860, he and his likely father, William, lived in Perry Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. William owned more livestock and property in both records than James and they lived near each other. In the 1870 non-population census, he and his likely brother George lived in Walnut Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio near each other. In the 1870 population census taken at a slightly different time, he is the following. Name: James Clark Age in 1870: 42Birth Year: abt. 1828 Birthplace: Ohio, Home in 1870: Raccoon, Gallia, Ohio Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Gallipolis Value of real estate: View image Household Members: Name: Age James Clark 42 Jane Clark: 38 Andrew Clark: 12Elsworth Clark: 9Ida Clark: 6 James Clark: 2 In this census, James Clark listed his age as 42 (which means his birth date could be off). They were all born in Ohio. His children could not read nor write. Many of the birth dates did not coincide with other firsthand records. In the 1880 U.S. Census, James Clark is 56, a farmer, born in Kentucky. His wife, Eliza J., age 50, was born in Ohio. Her father was born in Virginia and her mother in North Carolina. James Jr., age 20, was a farm laborer, 5 months unemployed while he attended school. Henry E., age 17, Ida E., age 15, Edward, age 12, and Rosa, age 9 also attended school. Jessie A., age 3 was still too young. Note that if the ages are correct, some of the birth dates I have for these children are slightly off. (CL-231) He and his son A. James were both known as A.J. in various published or family records. (CL-9) My family never knew what the A. stood for. My mother guessed that it was Andrew.

James married Eliza Jane Hoge GLENN on 21 Jul 1856 in , Gallia, OH, USA. Eliza (daughter of James GLENN and Mary (Polly) THARP, *) was born on 6 Aug 1829 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died on 18 Aug 1906 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH; was buried after 18 Aug 1906 in Old Pine Cemetery, Raccoon Twp., Gallia, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Eliza Jane Hoge GLENNEliza Jane Hoge GLENN was born on 6 Aug 1829 in , Gallia, OH, USA (daughter of James GLENN and Mary (Polly) THARP, *); died on 18 Aug 1906 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH; was buried after 18 Aug 1906 in Old Pine Cemetery, Raccoon Twp., Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Eliza probably was given the Hoge name for a neighbor according to Donna Lewis. This apparently was a common practice of that generation. (CL-453)

    Children:
    1. Mary M. CLARK was born on 4 Jan 1858 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died on 16 Oct 1862 in Perry Twp., Gallia, OH, USA; was buried in 1862 in Perry Twp., Gallia, OH, USA.
    2. 2. Andrew James CLARK was born on 8 Feb 1860 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died on 3 Jul 1935 in Raccoon Twp., Gallia, OH, USA; was buried on 5 Jul 1935 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH.
    3. Henry Ellsworth (Joe) CLARK was born on 12 Jul 1862; died after 1935; was buried after 1935 in , Gallia, OH, USA.
    4. Ida Ellen CLARK was born on 23 Aug 1864; and died.
    5. Edward Junias CLARK was born on 30 Dec 1868 in , Miami, OH, USA; died before 1935.
    6. Rose (Rosa) M. CLARK was born on 24 Feb 1871 in , Gallia, OH, USA; and died.
    7. Jessie Amanda CLARK was born on 9 Jul 1876 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died before 1935.

  3. 6.  Wesley TOBINWesley TOBIN was born on 3 May 1831 in , Guernsey, OH, USA (son of Isaac TOBIN, * and Matilda Ann(a) BENTON); died on 13 Aug 1897 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH; was buried about 16 Aug 1897 in , Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Family tradition as presented by my Great Aunt Gladys states that Wesley Tobin was a full Irishman and his wife, Mary Ann Danner was Pennsylvania Dutch. (CL-102) (Two of his great-granddaughters, Wanda Getz and Peg, both felt Wesley had some American Indian ancestry. Several members of the family have had his high cheek bones. This is also supported by the fact that the women in this family of the last 4 generations have had dimples in the upper part of their hips again indicating Native American ancestry. ) They met at an Old Brick Inn where she probably worked. Mary Ann Danner's father was born in Pennsylvania.

Wesley had been raised in Monroe Twp., Guernsey Co, Ohio. His birth date is contradictory in second hand sources and census records, being either 1830, 1831, or 1835. His birth place is given as Ohio or Virginia. (CL-102) He moved to Gallia Co. in 1851, married on May 21 or on March 4, 1854 depending on which second hand source is used. He was a merchant, fur dealer, and farmer. The family resided in a log house on their farm on range 34 of Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. My grandfather, William Edward Clark, was born in this log house. Sometime, thereafter, it burned totally down. According to a great-granddaughter of Wesley, Sophia Clark Liggett, the family then proceeded to clean out the chicken coup and use it for their living quarters. (CL-141)

In the 1874 "Gallia County Ohio Atlas", Wesley lives one section south and west of Adamsville (now Rio Grande, OH), and one section south of Rio Grande College, Twp. 6, Range 16, section 34. (C-590 In the 1870 census for Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., OH, Wesley's property is listed as worth $3700.00 and his personal estate worth $500.00. (CL-305) This is greatly up from the 1860 census which lists both values at $300.00. In the 1880 Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio census, he was 45 and a farmer with wife, Mary, age 44, Wesley 22, Mary A. 20, and Lola was age 18. Lola attended school within that year. In the next house, John Tobin, age 24 lived with wife Ellen who was age 15. (CL-231)

Wesley Tobin died of a heart attack and is buried with his family at Old Pine Cemetery at a location next to a fence. He gave a portion of his farm or equivalent funds to each of his children near the time of his death. Ad- ministration records for his farm, seem to suggest that the children received the land before the administration and that they hired someone to work the farm for a period of five years at that time. Wesley's death date is stated as 13 Aug. 1898 in this document, but was actually 1897 when the document is studied in full and his tombstone inscription is noted.

  1. 8.  William D. CLARK, *William D. CLARK, * was born on 20 Apr 1789 in Kentucky Or Virginia (son of William CLARK, * and Jane FERGUSON, *); died on 14 Jul 1881 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 17 Jul 1881 in Perry, Gallia, Ohio, USA.

    Notes:

The Clark surname comes from the name "Clericus," which means priest. It was an English name that evolved during the time of William the Conqueror. Alternate spellings of the name include, Clarke, Clarck, Clearck, Cleark, Clearke, Clerc, Clerck, and Clercke. (CL-387)

William D. Clark and Susanna Hunter are the parents of James A. Clark. James A. is listed in William's administration. William and his wife also have the correct birth places and son listed as James born in 1824 according to census records. These facts all match facts given in census records in which James A. is listed. He grew up in Cora, Ohio. It was a post office address located in section 11, Perry Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio from 1866-1913. Living members of my Clark family (namely my great Aunts) remembered their ancestors living in Cora, Ohio.

William D. Clark was married in Cabell Co., VA (now WV) in 1823. His first son, James A., was probably born in Cabell Co., West Virginia in 1824. He was deeded livestock and household goods by his probable father, William, on Aug. 22, 1824, in Cabell Co., West Virginia. (CL-DOC)

They then moved to Ohio where his 2nd son was born in 1826. His third son, Peter, was born abt. 1828 in Indiana or Louisiana (it's difficult interpreting the handwriting in the census. Their 4th child was born back in Ohio. In 1836, he is on the tax rolls for Gallia Co., Ohio. He owned a farm on section 13, range 16, of Perry Twp. according to an "1874 ATLAS OF GALLIA COUNTY, OHIO." He was taxed for the first time in Gallia Co. for 102 acres of land in this sec. 13, range 16, township 5 worth $146.00. He paid a $1.71 in taxes that year. He was absent from the 1833 tax tables. (CL-223) He was in the court Chancery records on July 22, 1836 in regards to Section 34-5-16, Perry Twp. Clark was supposed to buy Amos' land. He started to build a house on it, Amos tore it down and used the materials. Amos would not accept final payment from him. In court, Amos and William D. agreed to dismiss the case and each pay one half of the costs involved. (CL-228) There are multiple purchases of land by a William Clark, any of which could be our William, on May 26, 1823, Jun 19, 1839, May 19, 1847, and Jun 14, 1849. All of these purchases occurred in Sec. 35 or 36, range 16, Twp. 4. of Gallia Co., Ohio. (CL-359)

William might also be the William Clark who was the administrator of Enoch Shaw's vs. Jency Shaw (widow of Enoch) in Gallia Co., Harrison Twp., Court records date May 10, 1839. (CL-373) His oldest son, would have been our James Clark. They apparently didn't live in Ohio at his birth, as they gave Virginia (now West Virginia) as his birthplace in the 1860 census. (CL-213)

He was probably the William Clark, age 20-29 living in Cabell Co., Virginia in the 1830 census. His age is not correct, but everything else matches. (CL-336, 337)

William and Susanah's son, Norman, was listed as a convict living at home. They also had a boy, John Clark, age 3, born in Ohio, living or visiting in the household that could be a grandson. (CL-214).

The 1870 census for William D. Clark is as follows. Name: William D Clark Age in 1870: 79 (The indexer misinterpreted it at age 99)Birth Year: Abt. 1791Birthplace: Kentucky Home in 1870: Perry, Gallia, Ohio Race: White Gender: Male Post Office: Patriot Value of real estate: View image Household Members: Name Age William D Clark 79 (b. Clark is listed as a citizen and was born in Kentucky. His daughter, Virginia and son Norman could not read, nor write. (CL-225, 383)

In the 1880 census: Name: William D. Clark Age: 91 Birth Year: Abt. 1789 Birthplace: Virginia Home in 1880: Perry, Gallia, Ohio Race: White Gender: Male Relation to Head of House: Self (Head)Marital Status: Married Spouse's Name: Susan Clark Father's Birthplace: Pennsylvania Mother's Birthplace: Pennsylvania Neighbors: View others on page Occupation: Farmer Household Members: Name Age William D. Clark 91 Susan Clark 78Virginnia Clark 48Norman Clark 45

In the 1880 census, William is 91 with rheumatism. His parents were born in Pennsylvania and he in Virginia. (Note, all earlier census records indicate Kentucky) His wife, Susan, age 78, had typhoid pneumonia. Her parents were born in Virginia and she in North Carolina. Their parentage would have likely been given by a child in the household as she was very ill and he was aged. I'm not sure we can rely on that information. In the next house, his son George and daughter-in-law, Sarah lived with their 3 sons and 2 daughters. In the 2nd house after his, a Henry G. Clark, age 26, son of George lived with wife Emma. (CL-230)

William D. Clark did leave a will. In it he gives his farm, section 13, range 16, of 108 acres to his son Norman and daughter Nancy Virginia Clark. This is the same land he is living on in the 1874 Gallia Co., OH Atlas. It is located south of what is now Rio Grande, Ohio. He does not mention any other members of his family. In the administration of his will, his next of kin residing in the state, are listed as James A. Clark, George S. Clark, Matilda Blagg, Nancy V. Clark and Polly A. Duval, in that order. Out of these, Polly A. Duvall is probably Polly America Clark. The closest marriage record I've found for her is G.W. Deval to MOLLIE A. Clark, both of Gallia Co., OH at the residence of John H. Rupp in Gallipolis by Samuel Kerr, J.P., on June 17 1874. (CL-227)

Locating William's parents has been difficult. Neither of them has a death certificate filed in Gallia Co. where they were likely living at their deaths. However, where they were living at the time of their marriage does give a few clues. In 1820, in Cabell Co., WV, there are several Clarks: Samuel, Henry (brother?), Samuel F. (brother?), James and William. Only William has a son the correct age range to be our William D. Clark. This William Clark, Sr. has 1 son 10-16; 1 16--18; and 2 males over 26-45 (1 might be our William) in his household. He, himself, is over 45. He has one female over 45 in his home. William D. is the son of William of Cabell Co., WV according to a half dozen researchers who've submitted data to the LDS church also. Lastly, there is also a deed between William Sr. (father), William D. and James Clark (brother) on Aug 22, 1824 in a Cabell Co., WV that suggests a father and brother or cousin relationship between these persons without stating the same. This deed is transcribed herein by Linda Coate with spelling, errors and capitalization retained. "This Indenture made this 22nd day of August, in the year of Our Lord one thousand eight hundred and twenty-four between William Clark of the first part, Wm. D. Clark of the second part and James Clark of the third part, all of the county of Cabel and State of Virginia, Witnesseth that whereas the said Wm. Clark is justly indebted to the said James Clark in the sum of three hundred dollars by note executed on or about the 15th day of August 1815 (...?) Clark is desirous of securing the payment of the said sum of money, Now this Indenture witnesseth that the said William Clark for and in consideration of the premises aforesaid and for and in consideration of the sum of one dollar to him in hand paid by the said William D. Clark, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, he the said William Clark hath granted, bargained and sold and by these presents do grant, bargain; sell unto the said William D. Clark, his heirs; assigns forever, all the following property to wit: three head of Horses, six head of cattle, forty head of hogs two beds; their furniture and all the household and kitchen furniture and farming utensils at the time belonging to the said William Clark, to have and to hold the said property unto the said William D. Clark, his heirs; assigns forever to the only proper use and behoof of the said William D. Clark his heirs; assigns forever. In trust nevertheless that is to say of the said William Clark, his heirs, exec., adms., shall pay to the said James Clark, his exors., admns. or assigns the sum of three hundred dollars with interest thereon from the day the said note becomes due and payable then and in that; in that case this deed is to be null and void and of no effect. But if the said William Clark his heirs, exors or admins. shall fail to pay the said sum of three hundred dollars with the Interest to the said James Clark, his heirs, exors, or adms, or assigns then (d..) in that case the said William D. Clark shall upon the request of the said James Clark, or his proper representative, advertise the said property herein mentioned for sail, at least twenty days, on the front door of the Court House of Cabel County and then procede to sell the same and and out of the proceeds thereof, first pay and satisfy the changes attending the executution of this trust and then pay to the said James Clark, the demands for the security of which this deed is executed and the balance if any pay to the said William Clark. In Testimony whereof the parties of the first, second, and third part hath hereunto set their hands and seals, this day and date first above written. (Signed) William Clark, William D. Clark At a Court held for Cabel County the 23rd day of August 1824. This deed of trust from William Clark to William D. Clark for the use of James Clark was presented in Court acknowledged by the said William Clark; William D. Clark, which is ordered recorded. Testo: John Samuels, C.K.C.C." (CL-DOC)

I have personally chosen William as William D.'s father because of this deed which alludes to debt that William Sr. owes to his son James. James is making sure that William D. will pay the debt if his father dies before paying it off.

Further evidence that he is the son of this William is the fact that he named many of his children after his stepsiblings: James A. (Alexander), Nancy, Metilda, and Mary out of his children's names that we currently know.

I believe it's possible that William D's relationship to William is not specifically delineated as father and son in the records, because William D. is the son of William and a slave. This would account for the 1.5% of DNA showing up in my generation from Africa. His father, William Clark is the only ancestor I've found in 40 years of research that owned a slave and his wife's ancestry are the only owners of slaves that I have found. William D.'s son, James Andrew, also had very tightly curled hair and tanned skin also indicating this is the correct family. James Andrew would have inherited about 25% of African DNA to account for current DNA results. However, my DNA is coming up with many DNA matches to the Fergusons and James Jameson and his wife who were the grandparents of Jane Ferguson. So, this theory is probably not where my African DNA is from after all.

William married Susanah HUNTER on 24 Apr 1823 in Cabell, Virginia. Susanah (daughter of Robert HUNTER, * and Likely a slave \ mulatto, daughter of Mary BOWEN) was born on 4 Apr 1802 in NC or Virginia; died on 15 Jan 1881 in Perry, Gallia County, Ohio, United States of America; was buried about 18 Jan 1881 in Gallia County, Ohio, United States of America. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Susanah HUNTERSusanah HUNTER was born on 4 Apr 1802 in NC or Virginia (daughter of Robert HUNTER, * and Likely a slave \ mulatto, daughter of Mary BOWEN); died on 15 Jan 1881 in Perry, Gallia County, Ohio, United States of America; was buried about 18 Jan 1881 in Gallia County, Ohio, United States of America.

    Notes:

We know that Susan had a likely close relative, Nancy Hunter. Susanah was born in North Carolina according to 3 out of 4 census records. Nancy was born in NC according to most of her census records. Nancy married in 1815 to Asa Amos in Stokes Co., N.C. I currently have 3 triangulations with descendants of the father of Robert's parents and ancestors.

Nancy and Susanah were obviously close to each other as they both moved to Cabell Co., Virginia, and then to Perry Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio together. They went to the same Baptist church and are both buried in a cemetery surrounding that church.

Susan is called Saruh in the 1870 Perry Twp., Gallia Co., Census. In that one, she is listed as being born in Virginia instead. She married in Cabell Co., Virginia in 1823 to William Clark. Cabell became a part of West Virginia in 1869.

I had compared the DNA of over 50 Hunter leads without finding a cousin match up till now. The Stokes Co., NC marriage record of her relative, Nancy, is what gave me the breakthrough.

I visited her gravesite in Oct. 1993 with my parents, daughter, cousin Grace Ann and my nieces. We could only tell it was her grave because it was next to her husband's. A rubbing verified it was her grave although it was unreadable to the naked eye due to moss. My daughter and nieces placed flowers on her and her husband's grave while the sun lowered in the sky. It was a very special memory as it could have been 75 years since a family member visited. The stone had a civil war medallion on it. I'm sure the church couldn't read the stone and didn't want to slight any soldier.

There are 9 cousin matches to Susannah currently from John Martin Hunter's sons. I have the most matches and the largest match with his son Robert. They are half or step matches according to Ancestry. This suggests that Susannah is the daughter of Robert and another woman, possibly one of his many slaves. We haven't found where Robert lived from most of the census records from 1790 onward. Other possible fathers for Susannah include Capt. John Madison Hunter's sons, John, Benjamin or William who at various points in time can be verified as living in Stokes Co., North Carolina where Susanah's relative, Nancy married in 1815.

Susanah did marry William D. Clark where my dna so far is saying he was the son of William Clark and Jane Ferguson. Their son James A. Clark had very kinky hair and tan skin from a Civil War tin type suggesting he had some African ancestry. James A. also had a long narrow pointed nose and gray eyes which probably enabled him to be in the census records as white.

  3. 10.  James GLENN was born on 4 Mar 1792 in , Augusta, VA (son of William GLENN and Ann CURRY, *); died on 11 Jan 1886 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 14 Jan 1886 in Glenn Cemetery, Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

At Ancestry, my mother's descent to James Glenn is supported by a DNA Circle that relates 5 participants all back to this same James Glenn and inter-relates them to various members in the group. In it 3 of the members descend from this James Glenn and all are related to each other through DNA. This is called triangulation and proves that we descend from James Glenn genetically: M.C., JClark2d, and w_woods57. A second triagulation in this group again is proof and that is between M.C., JClark2d and terkamazis. James Glenn "was a farmer and cabinet maker. His home, west of (Glenn) Cemetery (near Vinton), was a 'weigh station' for the 'underground railroad.' James was amongst a small group of families that emigrated from Virginia and helped found Huntington Twp. in Gallia Co., Ohio. A religious man, he was instrumental in starting the first Presbyterian Church of Huntington and Raccoon in 1829, serving as Ruling Elder and Clerk." (CL-149) He was known as Uncle Jimmy to his nieces and nephews. (CL-453)

James paid taxes on his chattel in the 1827 tax lists for Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio (CL-499, 587) He was involved in several land transactions after that date. On Feb 3, 1831, Andrew Y. Glenn and his wife, Margaret, sold 30 acres of land on the west side of the northwest quarter of Section 25, Twp.7, Range 16 from lands he bought at Chillicothe, Ohio to James Glenn (his brother) for 200 hundred dollars. (CL-DOC, V. 12, p. 147) On Nov. 23, 1833, John B. Poindexter sold land in Range 16, Twp. 7 & part of Section 25 &26 bordering on Raccoon Creek for $275.00 to James. Both of these properties are listed as in his possession in the 1874 Gallia Co., Ohio Atlas. (V. 12, p. 146) (CL-523, 590) On Sep 6, 1834, James Glenn & Polly, his wife, sold Andrew Y. Glenn a section of the northeast corner of the north west quarter of Section 25 in Twp. 7,, Range 16 for 96 dollars. It abutted Raccoon Creek. (CL-524, V. 12, p. 653) The last record found was on Mar 2, 1864 between James Glenn and his son, Milton K. Glenn. Milton bought ten acres of land from his father for $200.00 in Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio that was part of the northeast quarter of Section 20. (CL-537, Vol. 33, p. 585) The 1880 Ohio census record, pg. 425D, Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Oh, says that he was born in Virginia in 1792 as were his parents. His wife was born in Pennsylvania as were her parents. She was 67 and he was 88 in this 1880 census. (CL-229)

According to readings of his cemetery stone, he died on Jan 11, 1886, age 93 yrs, 9 months and 19 days. This would make his birth date to be Mar 23, 1792 - and needs rechecking as it doesn't match previous information on his day of birth.

James was married to all three of the above women. Two of them are verified by their gravestones in Glenn Cemetery. His last two wives names can be verified in the administration of James Glenn's will. His first wife's nickname, Polly, is on her gravestone. She is listed as Mary in the 1850 and 1860 census. His marriage to his first wife, Mary (Polly) Tharp was the first marriage that occurred after Huntington Twp. was formed from Raccoon Twp. in 1810. She was the mother of all his children. (CL-411) A transcription of his second marriage follows: "James Glenn and Mary M. Hartsook: The State of Ohio Gallia County (...) I do hereby certify that on the 22nd day of December AD 1863 by (venture) of License issued by the Judge of the Probate Court of said county. I joined in marriage James Glenn and Mary M Hartsook Given under my hand the 29th day of December in the year 1863. H.R. How M.V.D." (CL-181)

The following will of James Glenn is from the Gallia Co. Courthouse. It is being transcribed with original spelling and punctuation retained by Linda Coate Dudick. Said Will was not deposited during the lifetime of the Testator, in the office of the Judge of the Probate Curt of said County, for safe-keeping, as allowed by law. Said Testator died leaving Mary Glenn his widow and the following persons all his next of kin resident in the State of Ohio. Eliza Jane Clark, daughter, P.O. Sworn to before me and subscribed in my presence this 21 day of January A.D. 1886 John J. Thomas Probate Judge. (CL-153)

The administration of James Glenn's will gives us clues as to the married names of his unknown daughters as the following grandchildren are listed as living relatives: Grandsons, Curtis Davis, William G. (Davis) and Granddaughters, Rathsheba Dye(r), Mary Vie(r)s, and (Terza) Quickle. (CL-154,155,453) Unknown or additional Glenn children might prove to be any of the following Glenn's located in records about Gallia County. Elizabeth Mahala Jane Glenn, died July 5, 1831, aged 7 years, 8 months, 19 days (buried near likely grandparents, William and Ann Curry Glenn). (From her age, she is either James or brother George's daughter.) Born in 1823, she has the exact same tree symbol carved on her stone as her possible brother, James Carlille Glenn, son of James Glenn. Polly Ann Glenn, died Feb 2, 1837, aged 15 years 4 months and 12 days. She is buried near her grandparents, William and Ann Glenn in the center of Glenn Cemetery, as all their grandchildren that died as children seem to be. There is a tree symbol on her cemetery stone, like several other suspected children of this James and Polly Glenn. Franklin J. Glenn & Samantha had a d. Ella in 1869. George W. Glenn married to Jane J. Tyler who had a son Edmore F. in 1870. (I personally believe these last two are a generation after his children and are either grandsons or gr. nephews).

James married Mary (Polly) THARP, * on 31 Oct 1811 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA. Mary (daughter of Joseph THARP and Elsey (Elserman) CALHOUN) was born about 16 Dec 1790 in , , NC; died on 2 Sep 1863 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 5 Sep 1863 in Glenn Cemetery, Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA. Notes:

At Ancestry, my mother's descent to Mary Tharp is supported by a DNA Circle that relates 5 participants all back to this same Mary Tharp and inter-relates them to various members in the group. This is evidence that we descend genetically through this James Glenn. Mary is listed as Mary in the 1850 and 1860 census and Polly on her gravestone. As Polly was a nickname for many women's names including Mary, I am assuming that her original name was Mary. It was common for the Tharp line to name their daughters Mary and call them Polly. (CL-308) About the same time as our Mary, there were the following Tharps in Gallia Co., Ohio: 1820 Census: Abel (Raccoon Twp.) who married Polly Bruno on Sept 7, 1820; Zaus, Jane Tharp who married William Blagg on Sept 14, 1817, Jesse who married Nancy Stephens on Dec. 30, 1819, and John Tharp (Perry Twp.) who married Harriet Souls on Feb. 3, 1828. Zaus was born in 1804 in Gallia Co, Ohio. He married Mrs. Rachel Calfrey. They moved to Boone Co., Indiana and then Grundy Co., MO. He died there on Sep. 8, 1885. (CL-399) By 1830, the Gallia Co., Ohio census only lists a John Tharp in Spring...Twp. Joseph and his son Abel moved to Tippacanoe Co., IN in 1830. William Tharp is in Tippacone Co., IN by 1840. Zaus is in Boone Co., IN by then also. From the migration pattern through Gallia county, I believe they are likely to be father and brothers of our Mary Polly Tharp. Zaus (also known as Isaias after Joseph's brother?, Esaes or Isaac (after Joseph's brother?) named one of his daughters Mary Polly Tharp. (CL-425, 448)

    Notes:

Isaac is probably Wesley's father, but this is not certain. In various census records that Wesley is in, his parent's place of birth is listed differently in many. In 1860, his parents are listed as from Wales. In the 1880 census, whomever gave the info to the census taker said his parents were born in Ohio and his mother's father in Pennsylvania and her mother in Virginia. In Wesley's brother, John W. Tobin's 1900 census, it says that his father was born in Virginia and his mother in Maryland. This matches Isaac's info. This Issac was born in Virginia, but is listed as Wesley's father in my Uncle Talmadge's family tree obtained by interviewing family members in the first half of the 20th century. Another of Wesley's brothers, Edward Willett, in the 1900 census, has his father's birthplace listed as Ohio and his mother's as Virginia. Obviously, this family didn't talk much with their spouses about their parents. Wesley was a name carried down a lot, though the Isaac wasn't. Isaac and Matilda's first home after their marriage was in St. Clair Co., Ohio. By 1829, they moved to Guernsey Co., Ohio. (CL-327)

Isaac purchased land from Andrew and Mary Noble in Guernsey Co. Ohio for $250.00 on 2 July 1842. It was located on the southeast quarter of Section 4?, Township N 4 of Range No. 2 containing 40 acres. (CL-288) Isaac Tobin owned 1200 acres of land in Guernsey Co., OH, sections 13 and 14, Monroe Twp. according to the 1840 tax lists. In "Stories of Guernsey Co., Ohio it lists it as 120 acres in 13 and 14 in 1840. One of these figures is probably in error. He was also listed in the 1840 Federal Census Records in Guernsey Co., OH, pg. 382, Monroe or Washington Twp. as Isaac Tobing: Males/1 under 5/ 2 age 5-10/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 15-20/ 1 age 30-40, Females/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 30-40, 3 persons employed in agriculture. (CL-117) It is not known where he resided after 1840. They again moved in 1854 to Horse Creek, Cotton Hill Twp., Section 23, Sangamon, IL. (now Woodside Twp.)

Birth and death information on Samuel and John Tobin come from 1900 Ohio Census Records and Ohio Grave Registration cards. In both cases, their parents were not listed, so the data is only tentatively correct based on date and birth place. If John Tobin's dates turn out to be correct, he was also in the civil war, enlisting Sept. 3 1864 as an army private, Co. E, 176 Reg. C.V.I. (CL-137) U.S. Federal Census Records Checked 1820: Culpepper Co., VA p. 98a 1830: (Isaac Toben) Frederick Co., VA, p.134 1840: Guernsey Co., OH pg. 382, Washington Twp. Isaac Tobing: Males/ 1 under 5/ 2 age 5-10/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 15-20/ 1 age; 30-40 Females/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 30-40; 3 persons employed in agriculture (CL-38, 58, 117b)

Isaac married Matilda Ann(a) BENTON on 22 Oct 1826 in , Belmont, OH, USA. Matilda (daughter of Edward Willett BENTON and Hannah DUVALL, *) was born on 7 Nov 1810 in Hagerstown, Washington, MD; died on 6 Apr 1864 in Cotton Hill, Sangamon, IL; was buried about 9 Apr 1864 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 13.  Matilda Ann(a) BENTON was born on 7 Nov 1810 in Hagerstown, Washington, MD (daughter of Edward Willett BENTON and Hannah DUVALL, *); died on 6 Apr 1864 in Cotton Hill, Sangamon, IL; was buried about 9 Apr 1864 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, USA.

    Notes:

Matilda's birth year doesn't match her age in the only census we've found her in before she was married. She is listed at age 5 in the 1820 census for Frederick Co., MD. However, her age of 30-40 in the 1840 census would match.

    Children:
    1. Elizabeth E(Llen) TOBIN was born after 1826; and died.
    2. William B. TOBIN was born about 1827 in , , OH, USA; died before 1881 in , , CA, USA.

    8. Samuel F. TOBIN was born on 10 Dec 1852 in , Guernsey, OH, USA; died on 20 Feb 1903 in Of Rochester, Sangamon, IL, USA.

  7. 14.  Jacob DANNER was born about 1805 in , Augusta, VA (son of Jonathan DANNER and Elizabeth MOYER); died after 1874 in Raccoon Twp., Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Jacob purchased 40 acres on Oct. 3, 1828 in Gallia Co., Ohio in Twp. 6, Range 16, section 33. This was a few months after he had married a very young bride in her teens. He was still likely the J. Danner on this land in the 1874 Gallia Co., Ohio Atlas. (CL-449, 590)

In the 1830 census, they have one daughter under age ten. This is an unknown daughter to me at this time, as she was not listed by name in the 1850 census -- and has either died or married at that point. In the 1850 census for Gallia Co., there is a Jacob and Sarah Danner. In the 1850 census, Jacob was 45, a farmer, born in Pennsylvania. His wife, Sarah, age 33, was born in Virginia. Their children were all born in Ohio. After Solomon, age 20, and Mary, age 18, the next child was Jacob, age 10. (CL-303) In the 1860 census, his real estate was worth $1300.00 and his personal property, $150.00. (CL-304) By 1870 it had changed in value to $1200.00 and $200.00. In that census it states that only daughter Sarah in their household could read and write. (CL-305, 383)

There are two Danners living in Gallia Co. of a correct age to be Jacob's father. A Jonathan Danner who lived in Perry Twp, Gallia Co., Ohio in the 1820 census, had many children, two the appropriate age to be our Jacob, and was himself over 45 years of age. If this is Jacob's father, it appears that his wife had died by the 1820 census due to the fact that the oldest female in the home was under age 26. One of his probable sons was named Solomon and lived next to him in the 1830 census in Perry Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. Jonathan was between 60 and 70 years of age. I suspect that Jonathan was the father of both our Jacob and the above Solomon. The other possible father for Jacob is a Michael Danner who was living in Perry Twp. in Gallia Co., Ohio by the 1830 census who was between age 50 and 60. He had actually made his first land purchase there in 1827. There was a son age 10-14, one between 15 and 19 and one age 20-29. He also had one daughter age 15-19 and one 20-29. A son Jacob's age is not amongst them as he would have moved out by 1830.

This Michael or one of his sons might be the Michael who married Sally Vance on 12/1/1825 and Elizabeth Napier on 10/1/1835. He or son Michael purchased land in 1827, 1838, and 1840 in Twp. 5. Because the name Michael was not given to any of Jacob's sons, I consider Michael much less likely to be the father of Jacob at this point in time. (CL-446)

There are multiple Danners of similar age to Jacob in Gallia Co. that are likely siblings or cousins. Solomon bought land in Gallia Co., Ohio on Nov. 4, 1825 in Twp. 5, Sec. 3, Rat. 16. This Solomon married Polly Koons on 1-25-1827 and that left a will in 1851 in JWBE, p. 450, Gallia Co., Ohio. (CL-360) A David Danner bought land in 1832 and 1838, part of it adjoining Jacob's land. David was born about 1804 in Pennsylvania according to the 1870 Perry Twp, Gallia Co., Ohio records. He was living next to a Solomon Danner, b. 1840 in Ohio. (CL-383) He married Sally A. Bayles on 10-19-1838. He left administration papers in 1877 in C/D p. 25 and 56 and is buried in old Bethel Church Cemetery in Walnut Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio next to his son Sylvester D. Danner. (CL-360, 445) A George W. Danner bought land in 1832 and 1836. This George W. married Elizabeth Norman on 1-25-1831. Betsy Danner married Henry Rickabuagh on 4-28-1829. (CL-359) There is also a Jonathan Danner buried in Ross County, Ohio by himself. (CL-445)

Jacob married Sarah A. GASKIN on 1 May 1828 in , Gallia, OH, USA. Sarah (daughter of Bartholomew Adams GASKINS, * and Rachel Ward\Woods DONATHAN) was born about 1815 in BEDFORD CO., VA; died on 20 Sep 1887 in Gallia, Ohio, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 15.  Sarah A. GASKIN was born about 1815 in BEDFORD CO., VA (daughter of Bartholomew Adams GASKINS, * and Rachel Ward\Woods DONATHAN); died on 20 Sep 1887 in Gallia, Ohio, United States.

    Notes:

Since Sarah married Jacob at a very young age in Gallia Co, Ohio, her family would also have lived in Gallia Co., Ohio at the time. In the 1820 census, there is only one family that had a daughter her age. This Baten/Bartholomew Gaskins lived in Raccoon Twp, and had 2 sons under 10, 2 under 16, 2 under 26, with 1 daughter of five and under ten (likely Sarah), 1 under 16, 1 between 26 and 45. He and his wife were above age 45. Their marriage date is in Gallia Co., records and her age is calculated from her age in the Federal Census records for Gallia Co., Ohio. If the census records are correct, she was at most age 12 when they married. His actual names from other records was Bartholomew Adam Gaskins. Sarah and her husband named a son after him, Bartholomew Adam Danner. There is another younger Sarah A. Gaskins, b. in 1837 who was living with Uriah Rose and Elizabeth Gaskins Rose in the 1850 census. She is probably Elizabeth's sister and likely granddaughter of Baten Gaskins, niece to this Sarah A. by age and place. Warren Lawrence theorizes that the younger Sarah A. is a daughter of Baten's son Reuben Gaskins.(C-513)

I have corresponded with a Gaskin in Western Australia. Her ancestors went to Australia in 1874 from England. She believes the name originated in France. (CL-309) Another correspondent with Gaskins in his ancestry states the Gaskins he has were from England and before that from Ireland. (CL-423)
