Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Capt. Samuel WARD, * was born in 1605 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England (son of Rev. Samuel WARD (FAMOUS PURITAN), * of Cambridge University and Deborah LEECH); died on 30 Aug 1682 in Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States of America; was buried in Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachusetts, United States of America.

    Notes:

According to "Mayflower Births and Deaths", Samuel remarried the same day his wife Mary (Hilliard) died. This obviously seems suspicious, but he did have a 10-day old infant at that time that would have needed to be tended to as well as his other children.

His tombstone is partially buried covering up his age and his 2nd wife's age. It or some unfound source says he was 89 at the time of his death and his wife was 83. Both of these ages would be quite elderly for the times. I am unable to verify his birth year or parentage or place of birth in Freereg.uk.org with the parentage given for him.

If this is incorrect, he might be any of the following:

Capt. married Mary HILLIARD about 1632 in England. Mary (daughter of NICHOLAS HILLIARD\HILYARD, Gentleman and Alice BRANDON) was born about 1600 in Arundel, Sussex, England; died on 28 Dec 1638 in Hingham, Massachusetts. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Mary HILLIARD was born about 1600 in Arundel, Sussex, England (daughter of NICHOLAS HILLIARD\HILYARD, Gentleman and Alice BRANDON); died on 28 Dec 1638 in Hingham, Massachusetts.

    Notes:

She died Nov. 28th, 1638, ten days after her son Samuel was born probably from complications with childbirth.

Her parentage and surname have not been proven through first hand records as is true with much of this line from Mary's husband Samuel Ward back in time. So far I've only found her possible father's birthdate and none of the Wards at Freereg.org.

That is highly unusual and puts this lineage as theory only, particularly when this is a family with money.

    Children:
    1. Mary WARD was born about 1633 in England; died on 5 Feb 1695 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts, United States; was buried in Marblehead, Essex County, Massachusetts, United States of America.
    2. Martha WARD was born on 16 Sep 1634 in England; died on 4 May 1708 in Hull, Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA.
    3. Henry WARD was born on 4 Apr 1635 in England; died in 15 May 1642 or 4 Apr 1715 in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States.
    4. 2. Major Samuel WARD was born on 18 Nov 1638 in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts, United States; was christened on 18 Nov 1638 in Hingham, Plymouth, Massachusetts; died in 1691 in Salem, Essex, Massachusetts, USA.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Rev. Samuel WARD (FAMOUS PURITAN), * of Cambridge University was born in 1577 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England (son of Rev. John WARD, * and Susan); died on 24 Apr 1640 in Ipswich, Ipswich Borough, Suffolk, England; was buried in Ipswich, Ipswich Borough, Suffolk, England.

    Notes:

Here is his excellent biography on Wikitree in 2022 provided by April Dauenhauer:

"Samuel Ward, son of Rev. John and Susan (Unknown) Ward, was born about 1577 [estimated from a portrait of him in 1620 representing him to be 43 years old].[1] He was probably at Haverhill, Suffolk, England where his father was minister.[1]
Scholar of St. John's College, Cambridge.
1604: Vacated his fellowship to marry in 1604 Deborah Bolton of Isleham, Cambridgeshire, a widow.
    1607: B.D.
    Lecturer at Haverhill.
Removed to Ipswich by 1604 (Says of himself on Dec 19, 1634, that he was preacher for the town of Ipswich for over thirty years).
1620: His pension was 100 pounds annually by 1620.
1622: Removed from prosecution to resume preaching.
    1622-05-31: Pardoned by the king.
