Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Wesley TOBINWesley TOBIN was born on 3 May 1831 in , Guernsey, OH, USA (son of Isaac TOBIN, * and Matilda Ann(a) BENTON); died on 13 Aug 1897 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH; was buried about 16 Aug 1897 in , Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Family tradition as presented by my Great Aunt Gladys states that Wesley Tobin was a full Irishman and his wife, Mary Ann Danner was Pennsylvania Dutch. (CL-102) (Two of his great-granddaughters, Wanda Getz and Peg, both felt Wesley had some American Indian ancestry. Several members of the family have had his high cheek bones. This is also supported by the fact that the women in this family of the last 4 generations have had dimples in the upper part of their hips again indicating Native American ancestry. ) They met at an Old Brick Inn where she probably worked. Mary Ann Danner's father was born in Pennsylvania.

Wesley had been raised in Monroe Twp., Guernsey Co, Ohio. His birth date is contradictory in second hand sources and census records, being either 1830, 1831, or 1835. His birth place is given as Ohio or Virginia. (CL-102) He moved to Gallia Co. in 1851, married on May 21 or on March 4, 1854 depending on which second hand source is used. He was a merchant, fur dealer, and farmer. The family resided in a log house on their farm on range 34 of Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. My grandfather, William Edward Clark, was born in this log house. Sometime, thereafter, it burned totally down. According to a great-granddaughter of Wesley, Sophia Clark Liggett, the family then proceeded to clean out the chicken coup and use it for their living quarters. (CL-141)

In the 1874 "Gallia County Ohio Atlas", Wesley lives one section south and west of Adamsville (now Rio Grande, OH), and one section south of Rio Grande College, Twp. 6, Range 16, section 34. (C-590 In the 1870 census for Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., OH, Wesley's property is listed as worth $3700.00 and his personal estate worth $500.00. (CL-305) This is greatly up from the 1860 census which lists both values at $300.00. In the 1880 Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio census, he was 45 and a farmer with wife, Mary, age 44, Wesley 22, Mary A. 20, and Lola was age 18. Lola attended school within that year. In the next house, John Tobin, age 24 lived with wife Ellen who was age 15. (CL-231)

Wesley Tobin died of a heart attack and is buried with his family at Old Pine Cemetery at a location next to a fence. He gave a portion of his farm or equivalent funds to each of his children near the time of his death. Ad- ministration records for his farm, seem to suggest that the children received the land before the administration and that they hired someone to work the farm for a period of five years at that time. Wesley's death date is stated as 13 Aug. 1898 in this document, but was actually 1897 when the document is studied in full and his tombstone inscription is noted.

Wesley married Mary Ann DANNER on 21 May 1854 in , Gallia, OH, USA. Mary (daughter of Jacob DANNER and Sarah A. GASKIN) was born on 12 Jun 1832 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died on 23 May 1923 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried after 23 May 1923 in , Gallia, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Mary Ann DANNERMary Ann DANNER was born on 12 Jun 1832 in , Gallia, OH, USA (daughter of Jacob DANNER and Sarah A. GASKIN); died on 23 May 1923 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried after 23 May 1923 in , Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Her father lived in the section next to she and her husband in Raccoon Twp. They were in section 34 and Jacob Danner lived in section 33, west of their farm, about 5 farms over.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  Isaac TOBIN, * was born on 29 Jul 1803 in , Loudoun, VA, USA (son of Nathaniel TOBIN, * and Elizabeth JACOBS); died on 9 Oct 1881 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, United States of America; was buried about 12 Oct 1881 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, USA.

    Notes:

Isaac is probably Wesley's father, but this is not certain. In various census records that Wesley is in, his parent's place of birth is listed differently in many. In 1860, his parents are listed as from Wales. In the 1880 census, whomever gave the info to the census taker said his parents were born in Ohio and his mother's father in Pennsylvania and her mother in Virginia. In Wesley's brother, John W. Tobin's 1900 census, it says that his father was born in Virginia and his mother in Maryland. This matches Isaac's info. This Issac was born in Virginia, but is listed as Wesley's father in my Uncle Talmadge's family tree obtained by interviewing family members in the first half of the 20th century. Another of Wesley's brothers, Edward Willett, in the 1900 census, has his father's birthplace listed as Ohio and his mother's as Virginia. Obviously, this family didn't talk much with their spouses about their parents. Wesley was a name carried down a lot, though the Isaac wasn't. Isaac and Matilda's first home after their marriage was in St. Clair Co., Ohio. By 1829, they moved to Guernsey Co., Ohio. (CL-327)

Isaac purchased land from Andrew and Mary Noble in Guernsey Co. Ohio for $250.00 on 2 July 1842. It was located on the southeast quarter of Section 4?, Township N 4 of Range No. 2 containing 40 acres. (CL-288) Isaac Tobin owned 1200 acres of land in Guernsey Co., OH, sections 13 and 14, Monroe Twp. according to the 1840 tax lists. In "Stories of Guernsey Co., Ohio it lists it as 120 acres in 13 and 14 in 1840. One of these figures is probably in error. He was also listed in the 1840 Federal Census Records in Guernsey Co., OH, pg. 382, Monroe or Washington Twp. as Isaac Tobing: Males/1 under 5/ 2 age 5-10/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 15-20/ 1 age 30-40, Females/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 30-40, 3 persons employed in agriculture. (CL-117) It is not known where he resided after 1840. They again moved in 1854 to Horse Creek, Cotton Hill Twp., Section 23, Sangamon, IL. (now Woodside Twp.)

Birth and death information on Samuel and John Tobin come from 1900 Ohio Census Records and Ohio Grave Registration cards. In both cases, their parents were not listed, so the data is only tentatively correct based on date and birth place. If John Tobin's dates turn out to be correct, he was also in the civil war, enlisting Sept. 3 1864 as an army private, Co. E, 176 Reg. C.V.I. (CL-137) U.S. Federal Census Records Checked 1820: Culpepper Co., VA p. 98a 1830: (Isaac Toben) Frederick Co., VA, p.134 1840: Guernsey Co., OH pg. 382, Washington Twp. Isaac Tobing: Males/ 1 under 5/ 2 age 5-10/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 15-20/ 1 age; 30-40 Females/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 30-40; 3 persons employed in agriculture (CL-38, 58, 117b)

Isaac married Matilda Ann(a) BENTON on 22 Oct 1826 in , Belmont, OH, USA. Matilda (daughter of Edward Willett BENTON and Hannah DUVALL, *) was born on 7 Nov 1810 in Hagerstown, Washington, MD; died on 6 Apr 1864 in Cotton Hill, Sangamon, IL; was buried about 9 Apr 1864 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Matilda Ann(a) BENTON was born on 7 Nov 1810 in Hagerstown, Washington, MD (daughter of Edward Willett BENTON and Hannah DUVALL, *); died on 6 Apr 1864 in Cotton Hill, Sangamon, IL; was buried about 9 Apr 1864 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, USA.

    Notes:

Matilda's birth year doesn't match her age in the only census we've found her in before she was married. She is listed at age 5 in the 1820 census for Frederick Co., MD. However, her age of 30-40 in the 1840 census would match.

    Children:
    1. Elizabeth E(Llen) TOBIN was born after 1826; and died.
    2. William B. TOBIN was born about 1827 in , , OH, USA; died before 1881 in , , CA, USA.
    3. Edward Willett TOBIN was born on 6 Jul 1829 in , Guernsey, OH, USA; died on 4 Jan 1900; was buried in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, USA.
    4. 2. Wesley TOBIN was born on 3 May 1831 in , Guernsey, OH, USA; died on 13 Aug 1897 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH; was buried about 16 Aug 1897 in , Gallia, OH, USA.
    5. James TOBIN was born on 23 May 1833 in , Guernsey, OH, USA; died on 20 Dec 1912 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, USA.
    6. John W. TOBIN was born on 20 Mar 1835 in , , OH, USA; died after 21 Dec 1912 in Of Sangamon, IL, USA; was buried in , Franklin, OH.
    7. Isaac Robert TOBIN was born about 1845 in , , OH, USA; died on 9 May 1917 in Jacksonville, Morgan, IL, USA; was buried in Jacksonville, Morgan County, Illinois, United States of America.
    8. Samuel F. TOBIN was born on 10 Dec 1852 in , Guernsey, OH, USA; died on 20 Feb 1903 in Of Rochester, Sangamon, IL, USA.

  3. 6.  Jacob DANNER was born about 1805 in , Augusta, VA (son of Jonathan DANNER and Elizabeth MOYER); died after 1874 in Raccoon Twp., Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Jacob purchased 40 acres on Oct. 3, 1828 in Gallia Co., Ohio in Twp. 6, Range 16, section 33. This was a few months after he had married a very young bride in her teens. He was still likely the J. Danner on this land in the 1874 Gallia Co., Ohio Atlas. (CL-449, 590)

In the 1830 census, they have one daughter under age ten. This is an unknown daughter to me at this time, as she was not listed by name in the 1850 census -- and has either died or married at that point. In the 1850 census for Gallia Co., there is a Jacob and Sarah Danner. In the 1850 census, Jacob was 45, a farmer, born in Pennsylvania. His wife, Sarah, age 33, was born in Virginia. Their children were all born in Ohio. After Solomon, age 20, and Mary, age 18, the next child was Jacob, age 10. (CL-303) In the 1860 census, his real estate was worth $1300.00 and his personal property, $150.00. (CL-304) By 1870 it had changed in value to $1200.00 and $200.00. In that census it states that only daughter Sarah in their household could read and write. (CL-305, 383)

There are two Danners living in Gallia Co. of a correct age to be Jacob's father. A Jonathan Danner who lived in Perry Twp, Gallia Co., Ohio in the 1820 census, had many children, two the appropriate age to be our Jacob, and was himself over 45 years of age. If this is Jacob's father, it appears that his wife had died by the 1820 census due to the fact that the oldest female in the home was under age 26. One of his probable sons was named Solomon and lived next to him in the 1830 census in Perry Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. Jonathan was between 60 and 70 years of age. I suspect that Jonathan was the father of both our Jacob and the above Solomon. The other possible father for Jacob is a Michael Danner who was living in Perry Twp. in Gallia Co., Ohio by the 1830 census who was between age 50 and 60. He had actually made his first land purchase there in 1827. There was a son age 10-14, one between 15 and 19 and one age 20-29. He also had one daughter age 15-19 and one 20-29. A son Jacob's age is not amongst them as he would have moved out by 1830.

This Michael or one of his sons might be the Michael who married Sally Vance on 12/1/1825 and Elizabeth Napier on 10/1/1835. He or son Michael purchased land in 1827, 1838, and 1840 in Twp. 5. Because the name Michael was not given to any of Jacob's sons, I consider Michael much less likely to be the father of Jacob at this point in time. (CL-446)

There are multiple Danners of similar age to Jacob in Gallia Co. that are likely siblings or cousins. Solomon bought land in Gallia Co., Ohio on Nov. 4, 1825 in Twp. 5, Sec. 3, Rat. 16. This Solomon married Polly Koons on 1-25-1827 and that left a will in 1851 in JWBE, p. 450, Gallia Co., Ohio. (CL-360) A David Danner bought land in 1832 and 1838, part of it adjoining Jacob's land. David was born about 1804 in Pennsylvania according to the 1870 Perry Twp, Gallia Co., Ohio records. He was living next to a Solomon Danner, b. 1840 in Ohio. (CL-383) He married Sally A. Bayles on 10-19-1838. He left administration papers in 1877 in C/D p. 25 and 56 and is buried in old Bethel Church Cemetery in Walnut Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio next to his son Sylvester D. Danner. (CL-360, 445) A George W. Danner bought land in 1832 and 1836. This George W. married Elizabeth Norman on 1-25-1831. Betsy Danner married Henry Rickabuagh on 4-28-1829. (CL-359) There is also a Jonathan Danner buried in Ross County, Ohio by himself. (CL-445)

Jacob married Sarah A. GASKIN on 1 May 1828 in , Gallia, OH, USA. Sarah (daughter of Bartholomew Adams GASKINS, * and Rachel Ward\Woods DONATHAN) was born about 1815 in BEDFORD CO., VA; died on 20 Sep 1887 in Gallia, Ohio, United States. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Sarah A. GASKIN was born about 1815 in BEDFORD CO., VA (daughter of Bartholomew Adams GASKINS, * and Rachel Ward\Woods DONATHAN); died on 20 Sep 1887 in Gallia, Ohio, United States.

    Notes:

Since Sarah married Jacob at a very young age in Gallia Co, Ohio, her family would also have lived in Gallia Co., Ohio at the time. In the 1820 census, there is only one family that had a daughter her age. This Baten/Bartholomew Gaskins lived in Raccoon Twp, and had 2 sons under 10, 2 under 16, 2 under 26, with 1 daughter of five and under ten (likely Sarah), 1 under 16, 1 between 26 and 45. He and his wife were above age 45. Their marriage date is in Gallia Co., records and her age is calculated from her age in the Federal Census records for Gallia Co., Ohio. If the census records are correct, she was at most age 12 when they married. His actual names from other records was Bartholomew Adam Gaskins. Sarah and her husband named a son after him, Bartholomew Adam Danner. There is another younger Sarah A. Gaskins, b. in 1837 who was living with Uriah Rose and Elizabeth Gaskins Rose in the 1850 census. She is probably Elizabeth's sister and likely granddaughter of Baten Gaskins, niece to this Sarah A. by age and place. Warren Lawrence theorizes that the younger Sarah A. is a daughter of Baten's son Reuben Gaskins.(C-513)

I have corresponded with a Gaskin in Western Australia. Her ancestors went to Australia in 1874 from England. She believes the name originated in France. (CL-309) Another correspondent with Gaskins in his ancestry states the Gaskins he has were from England and before that from Ireland. (CL-423)

    Children:
    1. Solomon DANNER was born in 1830 in , Gallia, OH, USA; and died.
    2. Unknown DANNER was born before 1830 in , Gallia, OH, USA; and died.
    3. 3. Mary Ann DANNER was born on 12 Jun 1832 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died on 23 May 1923 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried after 23 May 1923 in , Gallia, OH, USA.
    4. James Henry DANNER was born about 1839 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died about 21 Jan 1865 in , , Tennessee, USA; was buried after 21 Jan 1865 in Nashville, Davidson, TN, USA.
    5. Jacob D. DANNER was born about 1840 in , Gallia, OH, USA; and died.
    6. Henry DANNER was born in 1841 in , Gallia, OH, USA; and died.
    7. Bartholomew Adam DANNER was born about 1842 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died after 1890.
    8. John (S.) DANNER was born about 1844 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died on 30 Apr 1862 in , , Tennessee, USA.
    9. Abraham DANNER was born about 1846 in , Gallia, OH, USA; and died.
    10. Sarah DANNER was born about 1847 in , Gallia, OH, USA; and died.
    11. William DANNER was born about 1850 in , Gallia, OH, USA; and died.
    12. Rachel (M.) DANNER was born about 1857 in Raccoon Twp., Gallia, OH, USA; and died.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Nathaniel TOBIN, *Nathaniel TOBIN, * was born in 1771 in , , NJ, USA (son of Isaac (Tobey) TOBIN, * and Phebe THOMSON); died on 4 May 1846 in Monroe?, Guernsey, OH; was buried about 7 May 1846 in Birmingham, Guernsey, OH.

    Notes:

We know for certain that Nathaniel is the son of Isaac as there have been at least 5 DNA matches from all of Isaac's son's lines that match back to Isaac. (https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Tobin) We don't yet have DNA evidence that Isaac is the son of James and Esther Tobin as often placed in print. (2015) Nathaniel, farmer, "of Loudoun County" bought two lots in Washington, Culpepper Co., Virginia, in 1800. He and Elizabeth and his father apparently moved onto this property in 1806. In 1810 he is the Nathaniel that is living in Culpepper Co., Virginia. That Nathaniel has 3 males age 0-10; 1 male age 26-45; 1 female age 0-10; and 1 female age 26-45. Nathaniel and family moved to Guernsey Co., Ohio in about 1823/24. His father Isaac followed him there several years after. (CL-111)

Family tradition that pertains to Nathaniel Tobin as remembered by Clarence Tobin of Guernsey County and recorded by Ric Tobin (Copied letter in this author's possession), is that: "Nathaniel, (Clarence's great grandfather) settled in the military land from Zanesville, Ohio. (Specifically, he bought land at $1.00 per acre on the Birmingham, Peoli Ridge). He came by an oxen pulled wagon from Maryland (In probability, VIRGINIA, although Elizabeth was from Maryland according to son George W. 1900 census info.) when Clarence's grandfather was six years old. The Hollingsworth family came with the Tobins. They settled near what is now Birmingham, Ohio They lived about two miles apart and they were the only families in the area. The Tobins were Irish." This move to Guernsey Co., Ohio, probably occurred in the mid 1820's, sometime after Mar. 9, 1823 as he is listed in the Virginia County Taxlists at that time. Nathaniel brought his family with him. His father, Isaac, followed within a few years. He received 40 acres of land in the US Military Survey on Nov 7, 1837 as recorded in the Zanesville land office in TWP 4N, Range 3W, and Section 9. (CL-542) The 1840 Federal Census Records, Guernsey Co., OH, #397, p. 385 lists Nathaniel Tobin: Guernsey Co., Monroe Twp., 1 male age 15-20, 1 male age 60- 70, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 50-60. (Note: His wife should have been listed as between age 60-70, also, not 50-60.)

Nathaniel's tombstone states that he died May 4, 1845, aged 74 years, but his will found in Will Book B, p. 149, is dated May 4 1846 and probated on June 8, 1846. Because the date on the tombstone is possibly in error, perhaps Nathaniel's age is in error also. A 1771 birth date does not seem correct as his parents did not marry until 1775. (CL-113,123,124) _______________________________________________________ Transcribed copy of "Nathaniel Tobin's Will" (with original spelling and punctuation retained) by Linda Coate: Be it remembered that at the June (terms) 1846 of the court of common Pleas in and for the county of Guernsey in the state of Ohio held at and in the courthouse within and for the county of Guernsey aforesaid on the Eighth day of June in said year the last will and testament of Nathaniel Tobin late of the county of Guernsey aforesaid deceased being brought into court for Probate (I. 3. 10.  Edward Willett BENTONEdward Willett BENTON was born on 4 Apr 1782 in , , MD, USA (son of Benjamin Smith BENTON and Susannah WILLET); died on 30 Jul 1868 in Ostrander, Delaware County, Ohio, United States of America; was buried in Newhouse Cemetery, Delaware, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Edward owned a plantation in Maryland, the same state where he was born. In the 1820 FREDERICK CO MD, the following members were sorted in his family: "1m 26-45; 1f -5; 1f 16-26". He did not agree with Maryland's slave laws and therefore, moved to Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, and then to Knox and Belmont County, Ohio. According to the "History and Biography, 20th Century History of Delaware Co., Ohio", Edward Willett Benton moved to Knox Co., OH after 1824 and then to Delaware Co., OH in 1829. This isn't quite right, as Edward is in the 1830 census for Belmont Co. Ohio with the following family members: "1 male age 5-10; 1 male age 10-15; 1 male, age 40-50 and 1 female, age 30-40. He is in the 1850 Census record in Scioto Twp., Delaware Co., Ohio, page 273: "BENTON, Edward W age 66 b. MD farmer, Matilda age 46 b. MD, Catherine age 20, Rebecca age 17, Mary Jane age 14, Erasmus age 12, Nancy age 7.....all born in Ohio He disappears from the 1860 census records onward. (CL-488) He, a few family members and descendants are buried at NEWHOUSE CEM, DELAWARE, Ohio: Edw W 1782 - 7/30/1868, Matilda 8/27/1868, Benj T 1824 - 8/25/1906, Mary K 1825 - 1/7/1901, J R 1855 - 5/13/1916, Eva 1860 - 1/21/1939, and Chas B 1/9/1863 - 1/23/1941.

Edward married Hannah DUVALL, * on 7 May 1806 in , Montgomery, MD, USA. Hannah (daughter of Lewis DUVALL, * and Anne WELSH, *) was born about 1790; died in 1817 in Of Frederick, MD, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Hannah DUVALL, *Hannah DUVALL, * was born about 1790 (daughter of Lewis DUVALL, * and Anne WELSH, *); died in 1817 in Of Frederick, MD, USA.

    Notes:

Early 20th century DAR records state that Hannah is the daughter of Benjamin Duvall, a Revolutionary War Soldier. However, there is clear evidence that this is not the case. Hannah Duvall married Edward Willett Benton in 1806 in Montogmery Co., Maryland records. Private Benjamin did not live there. Plus she is clearly listed as the heir of Lewis Duvall of Montgomery Co., Maryland (the county where she married) according to his estate settlement in 1817 where his children received equal shares of his estate. This is verified in the c1952 book entitled "Mareen Duvall of Middle Plantation" by Harry Wright Newman.

    Children:
    1. 5. Matilda Ann(a) BENTON was born on 7 Nov 1810 in Hagerstown, Washington, MD; died on 6 Apr 1864 in Cotton Hill, Sangamon, IL; was buried about 9 Apr 1864 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, USA.
    2. Susanna BENTON was born on 1 Dec 1812 in , , Maryland; died on 4 Dec 1891.

  5. 12.  Jonathan DANNERJonathan DANNER was born about 1770 in , York, PA, USA (son of Michael DANNER, Jr. and Susanna KEHR); died after 1830.

    Notes:

Jonathan Danner and Elizabeth grew up in York Co., PA and lived in Hanover which is 18 miles sw of York which is in York Co., PA in 1800. By profession at that point, he made cigars and sold them for one copper penny apiece. (CL-514E) In the 1800 York Co., PA census, he and his wife were between the ages of 26 and 45. They had a son and daughter under the age of 10 at that point in time. This doesn't quite fit with their actual children, from Gallia Co. census records, it is likely that they have 2 sons and 2 daughters by that point in time -- unless the older ones were living with a relative at that time. There also would have been a new baby in the house if we have Elizabeth's birthday correct. In any case, he is listed as John, the tobacconist on the Heidleberg Twp., York Co., tax lists from 1806-1817. (CL-514)

History of Gallia County, Perry Twp. Ohio, H.H. Hardesty & Co., Publishers, 1882 (p. XXIII): "The following were among the earliest settlers of the township: Alexander Boggs, Abraham Beaver, John Smith (1812); Robert Armstrong (1811); Elijah Carter, Jacob Prose (1811); Samuel Allison, Jacob Roadamour, Stephen Gates, John Prose, (1811); Leonard Weis, Jonathan Danner, Michael Danner, James Porter, Paul Prose (father to Jacob and John), Joshua Riley (1810); Daniel Prose, George Smith and John Campbell." (Ancestors of Ruth Lucille Bryan at Family Treemaker.com)

Jonathan Danner who lived in Perry Twp, Gallia Co., Ohio in the 1820 census, had many children, two the appropriate age to be our Jacob, and was himself over 45 years of age. It appears that his wife had died by the 1820 census due to the fact that the oldest female in the home was under age 26. One of his probable sons was named Solomon and lived next to him in the 1830 census in Perry Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio Jonathan was between 60 and 70 years of age at that time. He had 2 daughters between the ages of 15 and 19, and one between 30 and 40 plus a son between 20 and 30 living with him at the time. (CL-446)

Jonathan married Elizabeth MOYER before 1794. Elizabeth was born in 1770 in York County, Pennsylvania; died before 1820. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 13.  Elizabeth MOYER was born in 1770 in York County, Pennsylvania; died before 1820.
    Children:
    1. Solomon DANNER was born about Nov 1800 in , Augusta, VA; died on 4 Apr 1851 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried in Koontz Cemetery, Racoon Twp., Gallia, OH, USA.
    2. Mary (Polly) DANNER was born in 1802; died on 8 Sep 1828.
    3. David DANNER was born on 7 Aug 1803 in Pennsylvania, United States of America; died on 11 Sep 1875 in Gallia, Ohio, USA; was buried in Perry Township, Gallia County, Ohio, United States of America.
    4. 6. Jacob DANNER was born about 1805 in , Augusta, VA; died after 1874 in Raccoon Twp., Gallia, OH, USA.
    5. Elizabeth DANNER was born on 16 Feb 1810 in , Augusta, VA; died on 24 Aug 1899.
    6. Unknown DANNER was born in 1811; and died.
    7. Sarah DANNER was born in 1812 in Virginia; died between 1813 and 1906.

  7. 14.  Bartholomew Adams GASKINS, * was born about 1762 in Maryland (son of Josias Gaskins and Sarah Dameron, son of Greenwood GASKINS and Deborah "Leah"); died on 6 Aug 1850 in Of Ohio Twp., Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Gaskins is a French Huegonot name derived from the surname "Gascoigne". Bartholomew/Baten is the father of Sarah. He was the correct age and lived in the correct place, Gallia Co., Ohio, to be her father. He was the only Gaskin in the 1820 census to meet this criteria. In fact, all of the Gaskins in Gallia Co., OH appear to be his relatives as they all fit exactly into every year's census patterns for his family. There is no other female Gaskin the age of Sarah A. that could be his daughter that was from age 5 to 10 in the 1820 census, his youngest daughter by his 2nd wife. Sarah also names a son after him.

Bartholomew was married at least twice and probably 3 times, as his first likely son Rhueben was born in 1791 according to his tombstone, and Bartholomew did not marry his first known wife until 1793.

His proven children are Thomas Gaskin and John Gaskins. In the 1810 census, he lived in Bedford Co., VA. There were 3 males under age 10, 3 between 10 and 16, 1 from 16 to 26 and himself over age 45. The females in the household included 1 under age 10 and 1 between 26 and 45.

In the 1820 Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., OH census, he is listed as Baten Gaskins. There were 2 boys under age 10 (Overton and Abraham if his birthdate was forgotten when he was older), 2 boys between 10-16 (Jeremiah and Solomon), 2 boys between 16 and 26 (John and Thomas), 1 daughter under age 10 (Unknown), 1 daughter from 10-16 (Sarah A. Gaskins), 1 daughter from 26-45 (Jemima Gaskins) and he and his wife were over 45 years of age. It is likely that Rhueben and James Gaskins that were between the ages of 16 and 26 living with their own small families in Gallipolis Twp., Gallia Co. in 1820 are also Baten's sons. They were accounted for by age in Bartholomew's 1810 census.

Nearness in location of several Gaskins farms also indicates further child relationships. Rheuben's farm is adjacent to Bartholomews. (CL-365) There is also a Solomon Gaskin who bought a farm within close proximity of Bartholomew's just south of Rio Grande, OH that suggests he is also a child of Barts. Rhueben married Julia Evans on 8/24/1820. A Myma Gaskins, possible daughter of Baten, married John Deal on 1/25/1826 in Gallia Co., Ohio.

There are two Bartholomew Gaskins that show up in the 1850 Clermont Co., Ohio Census, Ohio Twp, p. 415 that should be checked to see if one could be a son of his. There is also a Rose Gaskins that dies in unknown date at age 1m in Ohio Twp., Gallia Co., OH that is likely to be an infant daughter of his by wife Nancy Rose. (CL-371, 495, 538)

He purchased 100 acres in Gallia Co., Ohio on Jul 17, 1818 from David Boggs. It was located about 1/2 mile south of Rio Grande on the east side, NW 1/4 sec. 34 T6 R16. (Book 9, p. 103) He was taxed for 3 horses and 3 cattle in Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio sometime in that same year. (He did not have a house or lot in this tax record). He sold a small portion of his land along with wife, Nancy on Jun 12, 1849 to the School district #8, 1/4 acre in sect. 31 T6 R16. In 1822, he was taxed on 2 horses and 4 cattle in Raccoon Twp., but again no house or lot. Bartholomew is on the 1823 delequent tax list for Gallia Co. OH, section 27, T. 6, Range 16 which indicates that he owned a second piece of land. He was taxed on 1 horse and 3 cattle in Raccoon Twp. in 1824 and 1825. He was on the tax list for 1825 and 1827, Sec. 34, T6, R16 in Raccoon Township. Reuben also lived in Raccoon Twp. (CL-499)

In the 1830 census, he is living in Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio He has one son between 10-15 years, 1 from 15-20 and he was between the ages of 60 and 70. His wife was between the age of 50-60. They had one daughter living with them from age 5-10. They also had one of their likely mothers living with them, a woman between 80-90 years of age. They were neighbors of Thomas Boiles who was the husband of Jane Gaskins, Reuben Gaskins and Jacob Danner married to Sarah Gaskins. (p. 153)

In the 1840 census, he still had one son left in the household between 10 and 15. He and his wife were between the ages of 70 and 80. (p. 13, Raccoon Twp, Gallia Co, OH) In the 1850 census it is possible that he is the Bartholomew A. Gaston, age 88 who was born in MD and was still employed as a farmer. He lived with Overton Gaston (his son???), age 25, b. VA, farmer and his wife, Mary, age 22, b. PA, Nancy, age 39 f, b. VA and Bartholomew, age 1 b. Ohio. Nancy and the baby are his last spouse and a new young son. (C-495, 538) This is supported by a marriage record in Gallia County between Bartholomew A. Gaskins and Nancy Rose in 1748 and by the following record dated June 12, 1849. "In Deed Records, Volume 22, page 161, Bartholomew Gaskins to School District No. 8 Raccoon Township: 'Know by all men that we Bartholomew A. Gaskins an Nancy Gaskins, wife of said Bartholomew A. Gaskins, in consideration of the sum of $3 in hand paid by Thomas Jones, Edmond Noel, and Jacob White, School Directors of District No. 8 in Raccoon Township in Section 34 containing 1/4 acre to the Directors and their successors in office to have and to hold forever.' Signed, sealed and delivered in the presence of Daniel G. Whiton, Silas M. Boyer, Bartholomew A. Gaskins "x" (his mark). In this record, Rickabaugh #9 School was established and built on Garner's Ford Road. His birthplace of Maryland is again supported in his son, Abraham's 1880 census in which the household record states that Abraham's father was born in Maryland. He lived and probably died in Gallia Co., OH between 1850 and 1856 according to Warren Lawrence, a family researcher.

As for Bartholomew's parentage, it was passed down to Susan Roquemore that Bart's father was named Josiah, though I haven't found first hand support for this yet. (www.familytreemaker.com).

Bartholomew's marriage record to Rachel Wood Donathan is in Hinshaw's encyclopedia in volume 6 under Bedford Co., Virginia Marriage Bonds. It is NOT a Quaker record. Hinshaw in his last volume included marriage bonds for two counties in Virginia. Bedford was one of them. I believe that the persons who have connected Bartholomew to Josiah were confused by the county records that were included in Hinshaw's last volume, interpreting them as Quaker records.

If he was a Quaker, there is a Josiah Gaskill of correct age to be Bart's father in Hinshaw's Quaker records. Josiah Gaskill got a certificate to marry Mary Griffith on 10/5/1748 in Burlington MM, NJ. It should be again noted that Bartholomew's birthplace is listed as Maryland in his 1850 census and his son, Abraham's 1880 census which does not fit with the locations of this Josiah. I also have found extensive listings of the Gaskills (occasionally spelled Gaskins) in the Burlington MM, Records of NJ and no Bartholomew is amongst them.

Bartholomew is not in any of the deed records in NJ that support his lineage there either. Brian Durst suggests that he might have come from Northumberland Co., VA (via a Josiah Gaskins again) and that his somewhat unique name "Bartholomew" is from a stepbrother of his mother.
There are Gaskins in Virginia where a daughter, Elizabeth Gaskins married a Bartholomew Shrever, but no Bartholomew descendants in her brothers lines have yet been found by me. (CL-561)

As for Maryland leads, there are very few Gaskins in Maryland in the 1700's. There is a Sarah Gascoigne that came over in bondage in 1725 in the following record. If she had a male child out of wedlock, then she could be the grandmother of our Bartholomew Gaskins as one possibility.

There are 3 female Gaskins that marry in Talbot Co, MD a full generation before this Bart would have been born that might be his aunts. No others could be found in any marriage records for the entire state through the time period where he would have been born.

There is a Greenwood Gaskins living in Talbot Co., Maryland who witnesses a will for Peter Parratt on Sep 15, 1754. He himself dies and leaves a will in 1760 in that same county.

The following record on Ancestry applies to him.
Maryland, U.S., Births and Christenings Index, 1662-1911
    Birth, Baptism and Christening
    Record information.
    Name
    Deborah Gaskin
    Mother
    Deborah
    Father
    Greenwood Gaskin
    Birth
18 Aug 1753 Saint Peters Parish, Talbot, Maryland

A Leah or Leach Gaskin also dies in 1760 in Talbot Co., MD. One of these is likely to have had a son named Greenwood who was a Private in the Militia under Capt. Thomas Bullen's Co., about late 1775. Leah could be the nickname for Greenwoods' wife named Deborah. At least that is what I have theorized.

Of all of the Gaskins in Maryland, he could have easily descended from a William Gaskin who was named Constable for Bay Hundred in 1679 in Talbot Co., MD. He purchased or was granted 50 acres of land called Gaskins Pasture in Talbot County on 27 Mar 1682. He dies on June 16, 1711 in Prince George County in 1711. He left a will written on Apr. 29, 1711 and it was probated on Aug 4, 1711 by Executor Margaret Gaskin, his wife. A son John apparently sells part of 100 acres of land on the North Branch of Patuxent River called Green Clift in Prince George Co., MD to William Nicholls where he lived shortly after this as part of the settlement of his father's estate. John and his wife, Mary are in the records again referring to "Green Clifts" on Jul 20, 1730. This might be the John Gaskin living in Bullenbrook Hundred, Talbot Co., MD in an early 1733 state census. There is a John Gaston who is the head of household in Frederick Co., Maryland in the 1790 census. A William Gaskins took his oath of allegiance in 1778 in Somerset Co., MD. There is a James Gaskins who marries an Eleanor Sewell Gaskins sometimes after her first marriage in 1784 in Anne Arundel Co., Maryland that would be a contemporary of Bartholomew and his possible brother. (CL-555, 577, 578, 584-6)

In Virginia there is a pocket of Gaskins in Northumberland Co, VA in 1787. Adult households in that area are headed by Spencer, Salley, Edwin, Moses, Thomas John, Isaac, and Mary that might be related. Possible siblings show up in locations where his family or children live. IIn Clermont Co., OH there are multiple Gaskins of appropriate age to be his siblings. A Thomas Gaskins lives there in 1830 who is between age 40 and 50. (p. 189, Tate Twp., Clermont Co., OH).

Bartholomew married Rachel Ward\Woods DONATHAN on 7 May 1793 in , Bedford, VA, USA. Rachel (daughter of Thomas WOOD and Elizabeth UNKNOWN) was born about 1770 in Bedford Co., Virginia; died in 1840 in , Gallia, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 15.  Rachel Ward\Woods DONATHANRachel Ward\Woods DONATHAN was born about 1770 in Bedford Co., Virginia (daughter of Thomas WOOD and Elizabeth UNKNOWN); died in 1840 in , Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

She is listed as a Wood in family records and as a Donathan in court records, so which is her maiden name is not clear. She is listed as Rachel Wood Donathan in her marriage to Bartholomew indicating that she was probably married to a Donathan before Bart.

My theory is that she is the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Wood and sister to Jeremiah Wood. Both she (as Rachel Gaskins) and Jeremiah Wood are named in the will of Reubin Dolard on Jan 8, 1802 in Bedford Co., Virginia. Reubin Dolard was the same person that provided surety when she married indicating some close relationship between them, possibly uncle or grandparent. She is not named in her possible father, Thomas Wood's will written on Nov. 26, 1773 other than the fact that he alluded to his children in general. The will was not probated until Feb. 25, 1793, a few months before she married. She did name her oldest child, Thomas, again suggesting this is a likely match for the Bedford Co., Virginia area where they all lived. (Hinshaw, V.VI, CL-553, 554)
