These records fit Benjamin Martin deceased in 1766 whose son Benjamin was married to Sarah Baker. "Henry Martin, "to my well beloved children, William Martin and Benjamin Martin." Notes:

Henry was born about 1685 in New Kent, Virginia. His mother, Elizabeth Johnson, John's 1st wife, died birthing him. He married Jane Samuel and they had 7 children.

On March 21, 1719, Henry Martin purchased 260 acres on the ‘hasle run” from John Wridings of St. Anne’s Parish, Essex County, Virginia. The land, at the time part of St. Mary’s Parish, Essex County, would become part of St. George’s Parish in Spotsylvania County when they were established by the legislature in 1720. “For 1600 pounds of tobacco and 9 pounds cash. 260 acres…corner to Francis Thornton and near a branch of Massaponax swamp…crossing the forest branch…oak by a branch of the hasle run… crossing one of the main branches of the hasle run….” We know from subsequent transfer records and from Henry’s Will that this property was where Henry made his home, and that his son John lived on 100 acres of this tract. He is listed by multiple testers in the Martin YDNA Surname Project in group 1 (2022) proving that he is not the one who descends from the Swansea, Massachusetts John, son of Edward. Edward's group in currently in group 29 (2022) showing that the males in this line do not have common ancestry in the last few hundred years. They do have ancient lines in common as they are both R-M269 in Haplogroup.

Henry married Jane Allen SAMUEL. Jane (daughter of James SAMUEL) was born in 1685 in Rappahannock, Essex, Virginia, United States; died on 19 Apr 1748 in St George, Spotsylvania, Virginia, United States; was buried in Fredericksburg, Fredericksburg City, Virginia, United States of America. In 1622, he returned to England from the colonies with multiple native men and women aboard. One of them was Martha b. 1607 who within a short time became the wife of William Sizemore, b. 1600. She was the mistress of John Martin on this voyage over. We know this because she was so frequently at his side, that he was asked by other Englishman if she and others were his Virginia "whores", he answered to the affirmative.

He had other unknown mistresses and possible wives before he married Christian Pettus/Pettis in 1650. He was a man of means to be able to marry the daughter of well respected, prominent and prestigious Thomas Pettus and his wife, the daughter of Pocahontas. Each of Thomas' daughters were vied for by the men of means in Jamestown. This also suggests he would have come from a respected family in England.

Even at a significant age, he fathered multiple other children by her. Only children Ann, Rebecca, Elizabeth, Christian and John were verified as his children in this volume.

It is theory on my part that this John and his son Gentleman John are of the wealthy class of Martyn's of Cumberland, England. That is what it typically took to have the tile of Gentleman or achievement of Captain. This is the only John born in 1600 from the list below that fits with Burke's Landed Gentry's description of a Martyn family of England at that time that is not accounted for by the other family of status in Devon, England. The Devon England Martyns are not related to us by clear YDNA evidence from multiple testers.

Since her father was from a very prominent family in England, all his daughters were highly sought after by the wealthy businessman of Jamestown. This is the clue needed to discern Christian's husband's, John Martin's, lineage as there were only two John Martins of early New England from the well to do class of England. The other one is accounted by YDNA that goes back to a general of William the Conqueror. Her husband, John Martin, is accounted for by the "Peerage of Devon" Martins.
