  1. 1.  Alfred George STEVENSAlfred George STEVENS was born on 25 Jul 1878 in London, United Kingdom (son of John STEVENS, * and Keturah (Kitty) DIMMACK); died after 1950 in Of Dayton, Montgomery Co, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Alfred became known as A. George in the city directories by the time he married around 1902. My father knew him as Uncle George. He is listed as a paper hanger in the 1900 U.S. census. He is listed as living in the following addresses in the Dayton City Directories: 1900-1902: (painter living with father at 411 N. Main St.), and 1902-1908: Assembler having a home at 447 S. Quitman, (C-98). By 1914 he and his wife are missing from the directories. According to my father, his wife was German and he couldn't understand a word her family spoke. He eventually joined the First World War in Canada to fight the Germans. Afterwords, he basically left his wife and was living in Detroit, Michigan where he raised a second family.

    Birth:
Event Description: Or Battersea, Surrey, Prince Edward Island, Canada

Alfred married Amelia UNKNOWN about 1902. Amelia was born about 1879 in Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA; died on 5 Oct 1938 in Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA; was buried in Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Children:
    1. Alfred G. STEVENS was born on 7 Feb 1903 in , , OH, USA; died on 16 Aug 1943 in Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA; was buried on 20 Aug 1943 in Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA.
    2. Gladys STEVENS was born about 1904 in , , OH, USA; died after 1930 in Of Dayton, Montgomery Co, OH, USA.
    3. Leroy STEVENS

  1. 2.  John STEVENS, *John STEVENS, * was born on 25 Nov 1856 in Rugby, Warwick, ENG; was christened on 30 Aug 1857 in Holy Trinity, Rugby, Warwick, ENG (son of George Richard STEVENS, * and Annie TONKIN); died on 27 Mar 1922 in Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA; was buried on 30 Mar 1922 in Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA.

    Notes:

According to his obituary in the Dayton Journal dated Mar. 29, 1922, he was born in Manchester, England. Family tradition has been that he was born in London or in Lancaster, England (Death certificate). However, in the 1881 census record for England his birth place is listed as Rugby, Warwick, England. This is the only source that lists his birth place while he was alive. It was not the same as his wife's or children's place of birth. His birth date is listed as Nov. 25, 1853 or Nov. 25, 1857 (death certificate).

The 1881 census tells us that he was 24 years of age, making either 1856 or 1857 correct. His christening record took place in Aug. of 1857, so he was therefore likely born in Nov. of 1856. Fred Stevens gave the information on the death certificate that is often at variance with other sources. There is a John Stevens and Keturah Dimmock living in the Parish of Hackney, Co. of Middlesex in 1875 on Englefield Rd. that are probably them. (C-589) He was a superintendent of the mechanical department for the "ChatterBox". It was an English child's annual storybook.

In the 1881 census, John is listed as a printer and they lived at 161 Eversleigh Rd., Battersea, Surrey, England. In his christening record and 1881 census record, his name is listed as John Stevens. My father remembered his middle name being Charles, but that has not been verified. He (age 26) and his wife, "Katy" (age 27) and sons, Fred (age 7) and George (age 4) emigrated to the United States arriving in New York on November 1, 1883 on the Grecian Monarch. This was before Ellis Island was opened. They had departed from London, England. John was listed as a printer by profession. They came in Steerage with 3 pieces of luggage for the entire family. (C: Doc)

In his 1922 obituary, he was listed as having been in the U.S. for 35 years, but in reality it was around 39 years. They first moved to Wheeling, West Virginia where he worked as in Interior Decorator. They them moved to Dayton, Ohio in 1892 where he continued in the same trade and where he lived for the remainder of his days. He is listed as a painter living at 1916 E. Fifth Street in the Dayton, Ohio 1889 and 1890 directories. There are several Stevens in the Dayton, Montgomery Co., OH directory of 1887 that have similar names to his children, who could be his relatives that he followed to Ohio. They include an A.E. Stevens, an Alfred, a George W. (1845-1923) and a John Stevens. (C-1905, C-Doc) In the U.S. 1900 census, John is listed as a house painter who could read, write and speak English. They rented their home at 411 N. Main St, Dayton, Ohio. Both John's and Keturah's parents were born in England. (C-98) In his later years, John worked for a cookie factory called Greene and Greene as a painter and custodian.

His sons (Alfred) George and Albert Edward were at one time both in the painting business with him. They lived through 7 floods in the United States. (C-2,4, 1899) These floods might account for the reason they moved often renting the following residences in Dayton, Ohio according to Dayton City Directories: 1900: 411N Main St., 1902: 67 E. Halena, 1908: 218 N. Linwood, 1914: 522 W. 3rd. In his death certificate, his son Fred gives his birth date as Nov. 25, 1857. However, both census records give his age matching a birth year of 1853. (C-226, C:Doc)

As for his death, this was a very sad event for his children. John had remarried and was quite ill. When my father's mother and her sisters wanted to visit their father on his death bed on Bolander Ave, their new mother-in-law wouldn't let them in. She got all of his belongings including all the family heirlooms and furniture from England. The daughters even suspected that he was poisoned by his wife. However, his death certificate says that he died of a cerebral hemorrhage compounded by pneumonia that he'd had for the last 7 days. He died at 9:30 on a Monday evening. The funeral was held at the home of his daughter, Keturah Ritter, at 2:00 p.m. on Mar. 30, 1922. (C:DOC, 2077, 2517)

John married Keturah (Kitty) DIMMACK on 2 Jun 1875 in Hackney, Middlesex, ENG. Keturah (daughter of Benjamin DIMMOCK and Martha AUSTIN) was born on 2 Jun 1855 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, ENG; died on 11 Feb 1918 in Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA; was buried on 14 Feb 1918 in Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Keturah (Kitty) DIMMACKKeturah (Kitty) DIMMACK was born on 2 Jun 1855 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, ENG (daughter of Benjamin DIMMOCK and Martha AUSTIN); died on 11 Feb 1918 in Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA; was buried on 14 Feb 1918 in Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA.

    Notes:

According to her daughter, Maud, Kitty combed her hair with sage tea everyday so that everyone thought she had black hair until three weeks before her death. Albert Pickering nicknamed her "Roly Poly" because she was 4'9" and 140 lbs. She had a white poodle which she led on walks by carrying a sucker behind her. It worked quite well according to my father at keeping him following her. She was apparently an alcoholic, suffered with arthritis and died of a heart attack at about age 63. Her death certificate says she died of Chronic Brights Disease which is a disorder of the kidneys. (C-2, C:DOC) According to her obituary, she died at 8 o'clock in the morning on Feb. 11th. She was buried on Valentines' Day and her funeral was held at her daughter, Keturah Ritter's home. There were relatives listed in Albert Pickering Coate's Funeral Memory book in 1941 listed as Mr. and Mrs. E. Dimmack. They were Ephram and Daisy Dimmack from Middletown. According to my Dad, Albert Edward Coate, they were his 2nd cousins related to Keturah Dimmack Stevens. This could mean that they were 1st cousins once removed instead, but his family would call that relationship a second cousin. Ephram's brother was Albert Dimmack. Two of Albert's daughters had taken my father to their Episcopal Church a couple times (probably in Middletown.) (C-2078, 2517)

They are also related to Dimmacks in Wheeling, WV. (C-687) I have found a birth record for a Keturah Dimmock born the same day as our Keturah in Stourbridge, Kinswinford, co. Stafford, England that could be a relative of our Keturah. The birth record takes place on Jun 10, 1855 on 392 Moorelane. Parents, John Dimmock and Seah Priest Dimmock. (C-300) There is a marriage record another Keturah Ann Dimmack that I sent for that turns out to be a cousin to our Keturah. It's for a Keturah Ann Dimmack who marries a Richard Dawes on Mar. 4, 1876 (though it looks like 1846 - it was indexed as 1876) in Saint Peters Church, Wolverhampton Parish, co. Staffordshire, England. Her father is listed as Mathias Dimmack (our Keturah's Uncle) who was a horse dealer.

There is a Benjamin Dimmack in the London, England 1871 census, age 23, born in Lambeth, Surrey, ENG that would be the right age to be her cousin also. He could be the Benjamin Charles Dimmack that married in 1873 in Wolverhampton District which included parts of the counties of Shropshire, Staffordshire and West Midlands. Wolverhampton District is one place where several events in this family grouping appear to be recorded.

  1. 4.  George Richard STEVENS, *George Richard STEVENS, * was born on 20 Sep 1830 in Chelsea, Middlesex, ENG; was christened on 17 Oct 1830 in St. Luke, Chelsea, London, ENG (son of Joseph STEVENS and Mary UNKNOWN); died on 27 Oct 1899 in Wood Green, Middlesex, ENG.

    Notes:

George Richard Stevens was likely to be the son of Joseph & Mary Stevens. This is because he was age 50 in the 1881 census records for co. Surrey, England. His place of birth was listed as Chelsea, co. Middlesex, ENG. According to I.G.I records, the only match for a George Richard Stevens is the son of Joseph and Mary Stevens who was christened the 17th of Oct., 1830 in Chelsea, St. Lukes's Parish, Chelsea, London, ENG. London was in co. Middlesex, England. This record gives his birth date. Whereas his birth date looks like Sep. 20, 1830 to me, the I.G.I files interpreted it as Sep. 28, 1830. I do not know which is correct.

In the 1851 census, George appears to be living on his own. He is the only George born in Chelsea and of the correct age. He was age 19 on Mar. 30, 1851 when the census was taken. He was listed as a salesman. He was employed by George Fitch who was a Power Broker. He lived in District 1, St. James Clerkenwall, Clerkenwall, Middlesex, England. His likely parents, Joseph and Mary, lived in the same place, had children born in Chelsea, but were only 13 or so years older than him. George named a son Joseph after his father. In the christening record for his son Joseph dated 1858, he is listed as a "Bookseller" by trade as he was also called in his marriage record dated 1854.

My father remembers that his great grandfather who lived in England owned a book stall (store) there. He sent his granddaughter, Maude Stevens Coate, a picture of the Roman Forum and a large sailing vessel which hung on the wall of my father's home while he was growing up. In the 1861 census, he and his family lived in Rugby, Warwickshire, England. He is listed as a book (dealer?) at age 30, his wife was age 29 and sons John and William were listed at ages 4 and 1 respectively. George Richard Stevens is listed as a Commercial Clerk in his son John Steven's wedding certificate in 1875. He is listed as a Commercial Clerk Book Seller in the 1881 census records for Lambeth, co. Surrey, ENG. They lived at 59 Stockwell Green in Lambeth at the time. (C-3, 1900, EL)

I've found some of the children I have for him by finding John's birth place in the 1881 English Census and then locating other children born in the same place to the same parents in Mormon I.G.I files and christening records. I found two more children when the 1881 census record for George R. Stevens was found that matched this family perfectly. In the 1891 census, George is listed as George R. Stevens, a booksellers assistant born in Chelsea, London, England. His wife is listed at age 69, also born the same place as him. This doesn't agree with the 1881 census as far as her birth place goes and is likely false. The address where they live looks something like 82 Eolm Poste Hotel. I have not been able to find George R. and his family in the 1871 census.

George married Annie TONKIN on 3 Sep 1854 in St. John The Baptist, Haxton, Shoreditch, London, Middlesex, ENG. Annie (daughter of John TONKIN and Isabella STRANGEWAYS) was born on 15 Sep 1832 in Finsbury, Middlesex, England; was christened on 11 Nov 1832 in City Road Chapel Wesleyan, Finsbury, Shoreditch Parish, London, ENG; died in 1910 in Of Lambeth, Surrey, ENG. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Annie TONKINAnnie TONKIN was born on 15 Sep 1832 in Finsbury, Middlesex, England; was christened on 11 Nov 1832 in City Road Chapel Wesleyan, Finsbury, Shoreditch Parish, London, ENG (daughter of John TONKIN and Isabella STRANGEWAYS); died in 1910 in Of Lambeth, Surrey, ENG.
    Children:
    1. 2. John STEVENS, * was born on 25 Nov 1856 in Rugby, Warwick, ENG; was christened on 30 Aug 1857 in Holy Trinity, Rugby, Warwick, ENG; died on 27 Mar 1922 in Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA; was buried on 30 Mar 1922 in Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA.
    2. Joseph STEVENS was born in 1858 in Rugby, Warwick, ENG; was christened on 27 Oct 1858 in Saint Andrew, Rugby, Warwick, ENG; died before 1861 in Rugby, Warwick, ENG.
    3. William STEVENS was born in 1860 in Rugby, Warwick, ENG; was christened on 12 Aug 1860 in Holy Trinity, Rugby, Warwick, ENG; and died.
    4. Frederick STEVENS was born in 1863 in Rugby; and died.
    5. Thomas STEVENS was born about 1865 in Rugby, Warwick, ENG; died after 1891 in Of Brixton, Lambeth, London, Surrey, ENG.
    6. Henry STEVENS was born about 1867 in Rugby, Warwick, ENG; was christened on 14 Mar 1867 in Saint Andrew, Rugby, Warwick, ENG; and died.
    7. Annie STEVENS was born about 1870 in Rugby, Warwick, ENG; died after 1891 in Of Brixton, Lambeth, London, Surrey, ENG.

  3. 6.  Benjamin DIMMOCKBenjamin DIMMOCK was born about 1826 in Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, England (son of James DIMMOCK, * and Sarah BARNSLEY, *, son of James DIMMACK); died after 1875.

    Notes:

The name Dimmack probably originated from Sir Robert Dymoke who was King's Champion of Henry VII and Henry VIII. Many descendants of Sir Robert also held this title. According to Marsters', "A Genealogy of the Dimock Family," all the Dimock family in the U.S. are descendants of Sir Robert. There is an ancient town in England whose name is recorded as "Dimoch" in the Doomsday Book where the knightly English family of Dymoke resided in a castle until the 14th century when they moved to Scribelsby. It was a viable town through Celtic, Saxon and Roman eras. (C-2094, 2278)

We know that Keturah's father is Benjamin from her marriage record and the 1851 census. In the 1851 census, he and his wife, Martha are living in Dudley, Staffordshire, England. He is listed at age 27 and his wife at 28. Their birthplaces respectively were Rowley, Staffordshire and Morley, Salop, England. They had 2 children, Alfred and Charles, age 3 and 3 months born in Rowley and Dudley respectively. Benjamin is listed as a coal miner. They are living with Mary Wilson, who is a widow with children in the 1861 census. (C-2574) Mary was born in Scotland so I don't believe she was a relative. The 1861 census includes our ancestor Keturah as the child of Benjamin. Benjamin's birthplace is listed as Dudley, Staffordshire, England but the earlier 1851 gives his birthplace as Rowley where most of his siblings were also born. It is the one more likely to be accurate. In the 1861 census, Benjamin's wife is still Martha. The only Benjamin/Martha marriage I've been able to locate is for a Benjamin Dimmock and Martha Austin on Mar. 25, 1844 in Clent Parish, Stafford/Worcester, ENG.

Both their father's names were James. Clent is near Halesowen Parish which is also partially in West Bromwich. I've found a James Dimmock living in Rowling Regis, co. Worcester, England in the 1861 census who has a son Jospeh, Ephraim and Alfred that match persons I had already theorized were related to Benjamin from evidence suggested under each of their names. (C:Doc, EL)

I can find no listing for any child except Benjamin or Martha in the 1871 listing under any spelling that belongs to this family. I can find son Alfred and daughter Keturah in the 1881 census. We know that Benjamin is still alive when he witnesses his daughter, Keturah's marriage in 1875, but he does not show up in the census records that I've found.

Benjamin is listed as an Iron dealer in his daughter, Keturah's wedding certificate, but as a "Butty Collier" (or chartermaster for the mines) in the 1861 census records. His wife, Martha, was a Milliner in the 1861 census. A likely brother or cousin is named Joseph Dimmack in the 1871 census records for Ridgacre, Worcestershire, England who was age 42, born in Springfield, Dudley, Worcestershire, England who was also an Iron Dealer. Joseph's wife's name was Ann. His nephew, age 11 was Albert Mathias who was visiting and born in West Bromwich which is located in Wolverhampton Parish. Albert's sister, Martha Bunn, age 7, was born in Bilston, (Wolverhampton Parish) and was also visiting. There were however, likely to be other Dimmack families in Dudley at the time, as there is a Benjamin Dimmack born about 1753 in Dudley at the same time our elder Benjamin is having children there and he does not list a son Benjamin in his household.

My father also remembered what he called 2nd cousins, Ephriam and Albert Dimmack. My father would have called a first cousin, once removed a 2nd cousin in his day too. Possible relatives are of similar peerage to Keturah who moved to the places Keturah had relatives: Wheeling, West Virginia, Dayton and Middletown, Ohio. A possible brother or relative of Benjamin that also emigrated is a Russell F. Dimmick who was born about 1840 and died in Sep. 1896 and is buried in Woodland Cemetery in Montgomery Co., Ohio (C-2454). There are two Albert Dimmicks in Wheeling West Virginia, one born in 1760 who was the son of Mathias and one who was born in Dec. of 1857 in West Virginia who was living in Wheeling, WV in the 1900 census records. There is a Benjamin Charles Dimmack who was married in Shropshire, co. Staffordshire, Wolverhampton Parish, England in 1873 that could be another of Keturah's cousins.

Benjamin married Martha AUSTIN on 25 Mar 1844 in Clent, Staffordshire, England, Great Britain. Martha (daughter of James AUSTIN and Caroline UNKNOWN) was born about 1821 in Madley, Shropshire, ENG; died after 1861 in Of Tranmere Parish, Cheshire, ENG. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Martha AUSTINMartha AUSTIN was born about 1821 in Madley, Shropshire, ENG (daughter of James AUSTIN and Caroline UNKNOWN); died after 1861 in Of Tranmere Parish, Cheshire, ENG.

    Notes:

It is theory on my part that Martha's surname was Austin. The only Benjamin I have found in Parish records near West Bromwich, Worcestershire, England married to a Martha is for a Martha Austin. In this record they were both of age. Benjamin's father was James Dimmack, a miner by trade and her father was James Austin, a shoemaker. The trades fit their 1851 census records for the fathers. It should be noted that Martha's place of birth is listed as Madley, Salop, England in the 1851 census and Madley, Shropshire, England in the 1861 census. This is because the town was given to another county by it's owner as it was on the border between 2 fluctuating counties.

    Children:
    1. Alfred DIMMACK was born about 1848 in Dudley, Worcestershire, ENG; died after 1881 in Of Ridgacre, Worcestershire, ENG.
    2. Charles DIMMOCK was born in 1851 in Five Ways, Worcestershire, England; and died.
    3. (Benjamin) Charles DIMMACK was born about Jan 1851 in Rowley, Staffordshire, ENG; died after 1873 in Of Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, ENG.
    4. 3. Keturah (Kitty) DIMMACK was born on 2 Jun 1855 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, ENG; died on 11 Feb 1918 in Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA; was buried on 14 Feb 1918 in Woodland Cemetery, Dayton, Montgomery, OH, USA.
    5. Martha Jane DIMMACK was born in Summer 1857 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, ENG; died in Oct 1904 in Salford, Lancashire.
    6. Alice DIMMACK was born about 1860 in West Bromwich, Staffordshire, ENG; died after 1861.

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Joseph STEVENS was born about 1817; died in 1851 in Of Clerkenwall, Middlesex, England.

    Notes:

Joseph might have also had a son named Joseph born abt 1846 in Chelsea, co. Middlesex, England. Joseph Jr. was a baker living at 30 Wastdale Rd., Lewisham, Kent, England in the 1881 census who was born in Chelsea. He might have had a son named John who lived in the same place as son George Richard Stevens (Rugby, England) when he was having children in the same time frame as George R. If John is Joseph's son, he was married to an Emma. (c-2482) He might possibly be the Joseph who married Maria King in Shoreditch, London, co. Middlesex, England in St. Leonards on Nov. 26, 1821, the Joseph Stevens who married Maria Parker in 1826 in Nuneaton, Warwick, England or the Joseph Stevens who married Mary Page at Crondale, Oct. 27, 1829. Likely relatives of Joseph who were having children in Shoreditch, London, England at the same time as Joseph were John Stevens married to Charlotte, and Simon Stevens married to Lucy. In the 1881 census records for England, possible siblings born and christened at St. Luke's in Middlesex Co., ENG were George Stevens, age 60; John Henry Stevens, age 58; and Charles R., age 56. (C-2497, 2498, 2499) Joseph died previous to the marriage of his son George Richard Stevens in 1854 according to their marriage certificate. He was listed as a mercantile clerk before his death in this same record. He is possibly the Joseph in the 1851 census living in St. James, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England which is the same place as his likely son George worked. Joseph is listed as a bookmaker. His wife's name was Mary. Most of their children were born in Chelsea where George was born. Everything is a good fit except for the fact that Joseph was a mere 13 and his wife 12 when they had George putting the theory into a questionable nature. There is no Joseph and Mary Stevens that match these ages in the 1841 census, so I'm thinking these ages are incorrect. The family that most closely matches this Joseph and Mary are both age 30 in the 1841 census, born and living in Middlesex Co., England with what could be Joseph's older brother, George, b. ca 1801. George looks like he was a Lumber President and Joseph worked for him. They had sons: George, age 13, Richard, age 10, Henry age 5 or 6, and daughter's Mary, age 6, and Clara, age 2. Specifically they were living in St. Leonard, Shoreditch, Middlesex, England in 1841.

Joseph married Mary UNKNOWN. Mary was born about 1818 in , Essex, England; died after 3 Sep 1854. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Mary UNKNOWN was born about 1818 in , Essex, England; died after 3 Sep 1854.
    Children:
    1. 4. George Richard STEVENS, * was born on 20 Sep 1830 in Chelsea, Middlesex, ENG; was christened on 17 Oct 1830 in St. Luke, Chelsea, London, ENG; died on 27 Oct 1899 in Wood Green, Middlesex, ENG.
    2. Mary Ann STEVENS was born on 7 Jul 1832 in Chelsea, Middlesex, ENG; was christened on 14 Oct 1832 in St. Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex, ENG; and died.
    3. James STEVENS was born on 11 May 1834 in Chelsea, Middlesex, ENG; was christened on 7 Dec 1834 in St. Luke, Chelsea, Middlesex, ENG; and died.

  3. 10.  John TONKINJohn TONKIN was born on 21 Apr 1805 in St Issey, Cornwall, England (son of Richard TONKIN and Ann PEARCE); died in Apr 1876 in Shaftesbury Street, Hoxton, Shoreditch, London, ENG.

    Notes:

John is listed as a carpenter in his daughter's marriage record and again in the 1871 census for Shoreditch, London, England. In that census, he is 67 years of age, living with his wife, Isabella, age 64 and his granddaughter, Margaret E. Lowe, age 8 who was born in Hoxton, Middlesex Co., ENG.There are several more John Tonkins in the 1871 census records born at similar times with different wives. There is one John Tonkin that was imprisioned for beating up another man of Crowan, UK. That was 38 miles from where our John was born and 277 miles from Finsbury, London, England where he lived when and had children from the John that was in jail. It's not likely to be him.

John married Isabella STRANGEWAYS on 5 Nov 1826 in St. Luke Parish, Middlesex, ENG. 5. 12.  James DIMMOCK, *James DIMMOCK, * was born in May 1806 in Musham, Dudley, Worcestershire, ENG; was christened on 26 May 1806 in Park Lane Presbyterian, Cradley, Worcester, England (son of Benjamin DIMMOCK and Mary ROUND); died after 1851 in Of Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, ENG.

    Notes:

James is the son of Benjamin and Mary according to English baptismal records. He was baptized on May 26, 1805 or 1806 depending upon which translation is read. He was born in Dudley, Worcestershire, England according to the 1851 census. What the researcher needs to know is that Dudley, Staffordshire, England was part of the county of Worcestershire, England for many years meaning that his parents still lived near Rowley Regis, Dudley, Staffordshire, England where they grew up when James was born. He likely has siblings or cousins named Benjamin (b.1804) m. Fanny, Samuel (b. bef 1810) m. Elizabeth, Benjamin (b. 1803) m. Sarah, and Josh (b. 1802) m. Ann who all gave their birthplace as Dudley, Worcestershire, England in this census. There is a John Dimmack in Dudley, Worcestershire, England that might be a brother of this James who was having children in 1824 in Dudley. In that same town, a Mary Ann Dimmack married in 1848 who could be a daughter of this James also. (C-2580)

As for his parents, there is a John Dimmock, b. abt. 1777 in Dudley, Worcestershire, England who was still in residence in Dudley in the 1851 census, though it's county location was now listed as Staffordshire, England. His wife's name was Ann. If John is James' father, it's not a name carried down in the family. Any of the following newspaper entries might apply to this James. There is only 1 James Dimmock anywhere in Staffordshire in the newspapers. Though he appears to be of higher standing than that of a coal minor it still might be the 1 James Dimmock who is in the 1841 and 1851 census records as well as the news for Staffordshire.

James married Sarah BARNSLEY, *. Sarah (daughter of Thomas BARNSLEY, * and Ann HIPKISS, *) was born about 1806 in Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, England; was christened on 6 Oct 1805 in Rowley, Staffordshire, England; died in Apr 1871 in Wolverhampton, Staffordshire. Notes:

Males named Barnsley who lived in Rowley Regis of an appropriate age to be Sarah's father are James, b. abt. 1785, Joseph, b. abt. 1771 and Noah, b. abt. 1784. A Benjamin Barnsley, b. abt 1771 lived in Kingswinford in Staffordshire, England in 1841. Children of Sarah bore the names of Benjamin, Joseph and James in that order suggesting one of them could be her father.

    Children:
    1. 6. Benjamin DIMMOCK was born about 1826 in Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, England; died after 1875.

    11. Harriett DIMMOCK was born about 1850 in Halesowen, Worcestshire, ENG; died after 1851 in Of Rowley Regis, Staffordshire, ENG.

  7. 14.  James AUSTIN was born about 1806 in Maldon, Essex, England; died after 1871 in Of Lynsted, Kent, England.

    Notes:

In his daughter, Martha's marriage record, he is listed as a shoemaker. Therefore, it is likely that the following 1851 census record applies to this James Austin. He and his wife, Caroline, lived in Biddenton, Kent Co., ENG. He was 45, born in Heybridge, Essex Co., England and his wife, also age 45, was born in Linkan, Kent Co. England. He is listed as a shoemaker and mason. He is the only shoemaker named James Austin born between the years 1790 and 1810 in the 1851 census records for all of England. In the 1861 census, he is listed as a shoemaker. His age is 55 and his wife, Caroline, is 57.

This time it gives his birthplace as Maldon, Essex Co., England and hers remains the same. They lived on #2 Woodside Dr. in Chatham Parish, co. Kent, England. In the 1871 census, he is listed at age 65, born Malden, co. Essex, England but his profession has changed and is unrecognizable to me, "Klotkelden". He is listed as married but his wife is not listed with him. He lived with his 2 nieces, Ruth and Alice Gibson, age 23 and 15 respectively. They were both born in Kent. He seemed to have lived on Greenstreet in Kent Co., England.

I researched Alice and Ruth Gibson to find out who their parents were as their mother would have been a sister of James or his wife Caroline. It appears that Ruth was already out on her own in the 1861 census as a servant, but Alice still lived with her family. Their mother was Elizabeth (married name of Gibson). Elizabeth was born in Lenham, co. Kent, England about 1810.

He could easily be the James Gardner Austin who was age 71 when he died in Tendring, Essex, England from Oct.-Dec. of 1880 according to the England and Wales, Free BMD Death Index: 1837-1983. In the 1841 census, I've found one James Austin, age 25 living in a community quarters as an agricultural laborer along with a Samuel Austin (possible brother) both living in St. Osyth Church?, District 12, Essex England.

There is also another James Austin who was born in 1807 and died at age 78 in 1885 in Faversham District, co. Kent, England whom might be him instead.

James married Caroline UNKNOWN. Caroline was born in 1804 in Stuham, Kent, England; died after 1861 in Of Chatham Parish, Kent, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
