Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Unise THARP was born on 3 Aug 1769 in Murderkill Hundred, Kent, DE (daughter of William THARP and Mary PONDER); died after 28 May 1816.

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  William THARPWilliam THARP was born about 1729 in Tuckahoe Hundred, Talbot, MD (son of William THARP and Jane (OISTONE) AUSTIN); died on 29 Apr 1807 in , Iredell, NC, USA.

    Notes:

He is in Kent county, Delaware records on Aug 27,1772 with George Fleming and Wm Tharp, then on Jan 12 1775 Wm Luff and Wm Tharp. On May 13, 1772 there is an indenture between Wm Tharp and Ann wife and Thomas Hall and between J Fleming. Samuel Thorp is listed in Kent County, DE with land called New Years Chance. In 1785 he and his son witnessed a land purchase in Troublesome Creek in Guilford Co, N.C.

On October 8, 1794 a William Tharpe bought 150 acres of land from Isaac Duncan and another 60 acres from John Maiden on August 10, 1795 in Iredell Co., NC. He later sold John Maiden's land to his son. In William's will in Will Book I, p. 220, Iredell Co., NC dated Apr. 25 1807, he names wife Mary, sons: William, Joseph, Zedic, Isaac; and daughters: Esther, Armelia Cahoon, Unica, Kezziah, Ann; and grandson: Jesse Tharpe in care of son Isaac. His witnesses are Zedic Tharp, Jurat, and Samuel Wales. Amelia Calhoon and other Cahoon (Calhoon) families can also be found in Gallia Co., OH where some of William's children migrated too. Other Calhoons appear to have married Tharps in Gallia. (CL-452)

William married Mary PONDER about 1764 in Murderkill Hundred, Kent, DE. Mary (daughter of John PONDER and Alice GUM) was born on 5 Oct 1738 in Maryland or Sussex, Delaware; died about 1816 in , Iredell, NC, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Mary PONDERMary PONDER was born on 5 Oct 1738 in Maryland or Sussex, Delaware (daughter of John PONDER and Alice GUM); died about 1816 in , Iredell, NC, USA.

    Notes:

A handmade booklet on this generation of Tharps says that Mary was declared by jury as insane in 1815. This would have been the term used at the time for dementia. Son, Zadock, was named her guardian. (CL-317a) She died shortly after as her son Zadock was the administrator for her estate which he filed on May 28, 1816. The estate papers administered on May 28, 1816 lists her and William's children as William, Joseph, Zedic, Isaac, Esther, Armelia Calhoon, Unica, Kezziah, and Ann. It names one grandson Jesse who was being cared for by Isaac (Zaus).

She is listed in her father's deed transaction in Sussex, Delaware in 1767 under her married name proving that she is a Ponder instead of a Harris as is oft printed.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  William THARPWilliam THARP was born about 1681 in Langford Bay, Kent, Maryland, USA (son of Thomas THORPE and Elizabeth (NOT POWELL)); died in 1748 in , Talbot, MD.

    Notes:

William was born abt. 1681/1682 because he is listed at age 65 in Aug. of 1747 in a deposition in Talbot County, Maryland.William's father died when he was young. His appointed guardian was Robert Erick. Robert was a Quaker and this indicates why William lived and moved among Quakers. (CL-334) He is not mentioned in the records of his guardian, Robert Erick, but by others selling the belongings of orphan, William Tharp. William signs a deed in 1697 in Kent Co., Maryland. This might be land provided by his parents. His parents had sold most of their land in Kent Co., Maryland, but had left some to their son William. He is in court records in the early 1700's, suggesting he had been abused as a servant. His sister, Elizabeth, also was abused in another record. It appears that William was an "indentured servant" for his upbringing due to the following court records in Maryland."Thomas Usher being presented by the Orphan Jury in June last for makeing sale of William Thorpe Orphan of Thomas

William William was a planter and cooper in Talbot Co., MD by about 1710. In 1716 he witnessed the will of John Keld, cooper of Talbot County. On Nov. 2, 1717 he purchased 50 acres of land, part of "Ashton" (Austin) from Dennis Larey. It was on a branch of Tuckahoe Creek. He is listed as a taxpayer of Tuckahoe Hundred with 4 taxables (himself, sons John, Thomas and Isaac over age 15) in 1733. William bought 50 acres, part of "Colerain", in 1735 from John Jordan, near Hillsboro in Queen Ann's County, MD which he willed to son Thomas in that year. He lived 13 more years after he wrote his will. On Feb 17, 1742, when the lands of John Keld were divided amongst his 3 sons, one of the witnesses was William's son, Abner Tharp. He was a witness to verify the birth of Esther Arey, d. of David and Elizabeth Arey on 40 years previous to a deposition on Aug. 18, 1747 and one year after David and Elizabeth were married. David and Elizabeth Arey were obviously long time acquaintances or probable relatives. (CL-316) David was a Quaker. William's will dated 1735, is transcribed and forwarded by an unknown researcher as follows. "In the Name of God Amen This 30th day of August in the year of our Lord Christ 1735, I William Thorpe of Talbot County being sick and weak of Body but of Perfect Mind and Memory Blessed be God and calling to mind the Mortality of my body and that is Appointed for all men once to Dye Do make my last will and Testament in manner and form following find and principally I give and bequeath my soul unto the hands of Almighty God hoping for salvation of the same thro' the Merits of Jesus Christ my Saviour and as for my Body I commit it to the Earth to be buried in a Christian and decent manner at the discretion of my Executor hereafter mentioned and as touching such Worldly Estate where with it pleases God to bless me with in life 1 give devise and Bequeath the same in manner and Form following Item[?] I leave and Bequeath to my well beloved Wife Jane Thorpe her Riding Horse Bridle and Saddle with the feather Bed and all the Furniture Belonging belonging there unto which I now lye upon and fifty acres of land Which I purchased of Denis Lary (1) during her life and after her decease to my son John Thorpe and his Heirs forever except one acre which I bequeath for a Burying Place not to be sold or Embossted [? ] moreover my will is that my Wife shall have the free use of and liberty of that Parcell of Land which I purchased of John Jordan (2) During her widowhood and afterwards to return it to my Son Thomas Thorpe and his Heirs forever and my will is that my wife shall have all of the Woolen and Linnen that I have now in my house that was bought for her life Item I leave and bequeath unto my son John Thorpe a feather bed Item I leave and bequeath to my son Isaac Thorpe a mare and colt which he has now in Possession with Bridle and Saddle and one feather bed Item I leave and bequeath to my Daughter Mary Thorpe a young mare colt going in Two years old Item I leave and bequeath to my son William Thorpe a walnut table Item my will is that my four youngest sons Abner, Joseph, Ogle, and William shall be free and at age at 20 years of age if it happens that my wife either marry or dye otherwise to stay with her till full age. His will was not probated until 1754.

William married Jane (OISTONE) AUSTIN on 8 Jan 1709 in St. Peter's Parish, Easton, Talbot, MD. Jane (daughter of Thomas AUSTIN and Hannah FOSTER) was born about 1689 in St. Peter's Parish, Easton, Talbot, MD; died in 1730 in St. Peter's Parish, Easton, Talbot, MD. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Jane (OISTONE) AUSTINJane (OISTONE) AUSTIN was born about 1689 in St. Peter's Parish, Easton, Talbot, MD (daughter of Thomas AUSTIN and Hannah FOSTER); died in 1730 in St. Peter's Parish, Easton, Talbot, MD.

    Notes:

Jane's name is also spelled Oistone. In 1701, Jane inherited 50 acres of "Austin". Her sister, Mary, received an equal share. In 1715, Mary and her husband, John Worleysmith, sold it to Denis Lary. Denis proceeded to sell it in 1717 to William Tharp, husband of Jane. This 100 acre section that was probably Jane's childhood home went to sons John and William who sold it to John Plummer when they moved to Kent Co., DE in 1750.

  3. 6.  John PONDERJohn PONDER was born on 9 Mar 1704 in Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George's, MD (son of John PONDER and Mary TURNER); died on 3 Jul 1787 in Broadkill Hundred, Sussex, Delaware, USA.

    Notes:

In 1725, he sold 150 acres of land to Thomas Groves in Sussex Co., Delaware as per deed records for that county. He signs the deed as John J. Ponder. Below the signature is the word Mark, so the J in the middle of his name could be his mark for John. Luke Watson and Mary Woodward delivered the deed. No wife is mentioned at the time. We have proof that his wife was Alice Gum from a March 1735 will made by Alice's father in law, Griffith Jones. It refers to John Ponder (yeoman) and his wife Alse Gum d. of John Gum as the daughter in law of Griffith Jones.

On Nov. 6, 1767 in Sussex, Delaware, John Ponder deeded land that named his deceased wife as the daughter of John Gum. It also lists John Gum's children as Sarah married to Jacon Shelton. The deed gives John's Ponders' children as Mary married to William Tharp, Sarah married to William Mitten and John Ponder Jr. In the will index, it says his wife was the daughter of John Gum. His will was written on Aug. 15, 1786.Primary Name: John Ponder, Yeoman Will Location: Broadkiln Hd. Heirs: wife Elisabeth Ponder; son James Ponder; daus. 1. 8.  Thomas THORPEThomas THORPE was born about 1637 in Barton Upon Humber, Lincolnshire, England; was christened on 17 May 1637 in St Mary, Barton on Humber, Lincolnshire, England (son of Thomas THORPE and Elizabeth); died on 21 Nov 1686 in Kent County, Maryland, United States of America.

    Notes:

Here is what we know about this Thomas from YDNA results at FTDNA. He is related to Solomon Tharp, b. 1750 of Delaware and other states and to a Zacheas Tharp, b.c. 1750, Botecourt Co., VA and a Jeremiah Tharp of unknown date. Solomon is not the Solomon of Woodbridge, NJ as they are absolutely not related via YDNA testing. The Woodbridge, NJ group is an entirely different YDNA grouping.

Here is who our Thomas is NOT related to via YDNA.

    1. Haplotype #1: Thomas Thorpe (1631) of Woodbridge, New Jersey; Zebulon Tharp (early 1700's) of Virginia; Benjamin Tharp (abt 1770) of Virginia, Thomas Thorp (1818) of Ontario, Canada; John Jacob Thorp/Tharp (1776) of Morris County, New Jersey.
    3. Haplotype #3: John Henry Tharp (abt 1830) of Somerset County, New Jersey.
    4. Haplotype #4: James Tharp (1799) of Virginia.
    5. Haplotype #5: George Thorpe (late 1700's) of England.
    6. Haplotype #6: William Thorpe (abt 1605) of New Haven, Connecticut.

Thomas was born in England or Virginia and supposedly lived in Virginia from 1660-1674. Descendants have theorized that he came as an indentured servant in one of the two following possibilities. It is believed that our Thomas came from Virginia before he moved to Maryland as per a Ship's passenger list dated 1683. He bought 200 acres of land in Maryland in 1684 known as Pentridge from Jacob Johnson of Langford Cay (Bay), Kent Co., MD. He paid for it with 4300 pounds of Tobacco indicating that he had land in1683/4 to be able to buy these 200 acres in 1684.

Here are the theories that he was an indentured servant instead. A Thomas arrived in a party in 1653/1654 where David Philips/Felps of Lancaster Co., VA claimed him and others as headrights. The other persons he claimed could have came from the same area in England. They were Jonathan Humphries, Elizabeth Collins, Thomas Smythson, and Mr. Jonathan Cox. He is the following Thomas. "Thomas Tharpe was born in 1633 in England to William Thorp and his wife, Margaret and was baptized on 28 Oct 1633 in St Michael's Parish, Bassinshaw, London, London, England.

He arrived in Virginia in 1654 and John Cox sponsored him in Lancaster, VA.

He married Alice (last name unknown) and they had 3 children---William (b 1662), Thomas (1664-May 1704), and Elizabeth(b 1601). Alice died after 6 Feb 1666/7 in Sittingbourne Parish, Rappahannock County, VA.

He and Henry (Hendrick) Lucas bought 105 acres for their families in Rappahannock Co, VA on 28 Feb 1662 and again on 20 Oct 1662.

After Alice died Henry gave (deeded) Alice half of the land that he and Thomas had purchased with the stipulation that the land go to her oldest son, William, when she died so that the land would remain with the family.

Thomas Thorpe was born before 1642. [1]"

Another Thomas Thorp came in 1658 instead and was claimed by John Evans of Westmoreland Co., Virginia. Evans claimed headrights on 33 passengers. They were himself, Jonathan Evans Jr., Mary Evans; (all of Westmoreland and then Essex Co., VA) Timothy, Edward and Charles Hill, Robert and Peter Lowe; Stephen, James and Richard Allen; Thomas and John Thorpe; Mary and Elizabeth Lord; Ann and Elizabeth Thompson; Abigail Parker; Barnaby Little; Rice Jones; Thomas Allstone; James Morrison; Leonard Strong; John Batt; John Moyses; John Clerk; Henry King; John Stoile; Edward Shoare; Sarah Voss; Tabitha Hare; Ann Dakin; and Edward Person. Again, if these persons are all from one region in England it could give us a lead back to our Thomas' ancestors. The headright system was for men, women and children at the time. That along with DNA saying we are related to the early Massachusetts group could help us narrow down where both groups are from. Candee Varvil suggests that this Thomas Tharp was from Westmorland, VA and probably ended up in Northumberland, VA and is not likely ours.

Right now, the only one unaccounted for is the Thomas who emigrated in 1664 to Virginia from immigration records.

It is important to note that the Virginia Company first started this headright system, where persons who could pay for the passage of "poor" persons to Virginia would not only receive at least 50 acers of land per person, but also had their indentured servitude for their agreed upon number of years.

The land our Thomas purchased in Kent Co., MD was close to if not on Quaker Neck. Although Thomas was not a Quaker, the Tharps often lived near Quakers and some of them married into Quaker families. A note of interest in Robert L. Tharp's book, is that Thomas is known not to be a Quaker because he started his will with "In the name of God, Amen," a manner never used by Quakers.

He died before Nov. 21, 1686 in that same county as his will was probated then. In his will he named: son, William, underage; daughter, Elizabeth, probably under age, neither with heirs, son Thomas Thorp, daughter, Mary Thorp. He dispossessed his "rebellious wife Elizabeth Tharp ... because she is gone away in another Country with James Carle and have carried a great parte of my goods along with her and lives in adultery with him." He made his friend, Robert Erick his executor and appointed guardian for his two underage children. He bequeathed him the land meant for William and Elizabeth if they had no heirs. (CL-316)

When looking on Freereg.org.uk, here are the baptismal dates of any of the Thomas Thorpes that were born in a range to be this Thomas. Obviously his parentage is difficult to discern.

Out of these, and the one born in 1640 in Hertfordshire from English baptismal records, all of them except one are accounted for by YDNA, or English records placing them in England when our Thomas was in Maryland.

The one that disappears from English records in 1661, is a match to our Thomas who could have first arrived in Virginia in 1664. This would explain why he had 4000+ lbs of Tobacco to buy his land in Kent Co., Maryland in 1683. His unknown wife never appears in burial records in England. He has a son Thomas who was born in Lincolnshire, England where he was from whose marriage and death never occur in Lincolnshire either. The fit makes a very strong theory.

Please note, that there is a John Thorpe whom is a witness for the will of Jacob Lowder in 1696 also in Kent, Maryland that seems like it could be his son.

Thomas married Elizabeth (NOT POWELL) on 21 Nov 1681 in , Kent, MD. Elizabeth was born before 1642 in of Lincolnshire, England; died about 1689 in , Talbot, MD. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  5. 12.  John PONDER was born in 1680 in , Kent, MD (son of John PONDER and (Margaret)); died on 25 Apr 1719 in Milton, Sussex, Delaware.

    Notes:

This occurred in Kent Co., Maryland between 1701 and 1702 according to the Maryland Archives and the fact that John Sr. is still alive. It involves his sons, John and Richard also.

Peter Mersey and Thomas Mounsier in their prper prsons and Phillip Duff by John Ponder his Surety, Are bound to Appear As Evidences here next Court In the Sume of ten pds Sterg ~ John Ponder Junr. and Richard Ponder are bound in twenty pounds Sterg. And John Ponder Senr. and Tho: Ford are bound in ten pounds Sterg Each to be levy'd as is abovesd. in Case the Sd. Jno. Ponder Junr. and Richd. Ponder do not Make their Appearance at the next Court He resided in Sussex, Delaware in 1717. The Commissioners of Sussex signed a land warrant to John Ponder on 13 Nov 1717 for 200 acres in the Forest of Sussex. He was listed as "of Cedar Creek Hundred" in the membership role of St. Matthews Church in 1717.

He died in 1719 in Sussex County, Delaware. His will names eldest daughter Mary; eldest son, John "plantation where I now live and land in Maryland including Shepherd's Field"; sons James and Daniel, daughters Sarah, Margaret and Rosanna. He gave his plantation in Queen Ann's County, Maryland to his wife, Mary. The will was probated on 15 Apr 1719. Liber A, folios 107-109. There is a debate about whether or not John is the son of John Ponder and a wife Margaret supposedly mentioned as his wife in a 1680 deed where he cancels his headrights. We have not been able to find the document supporting this.

This John also was the husband of Mary, d. of Ann Norris. Some believe Mary was the mother of all but one of his children. DNA seems to be supporting this 2nd theory. I checked my mother's DNA who was born in 1916 against 17 of Ann Norris' father, Thomas Edward Norris' descendants. About 1/4 of them had chromosome segments in common with my mother from 3.2 to 6.7 cM's. For this far back in time that is amazing.

John married Mary TURNER before 1700. Mary (daughter of John TURNER and Margaret) was born in 1676 in , , Maryland; was christened on 27 Jun 1704 in , Anne Arundel, MD; died on 1 Jul 1721 in , Sussex, Delaware. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 13.  Mary TURNER was born in 1676 in , , Maryland; was christened on 27 Jun 1704 in , Anne Arundel, MD (daughter of John TURNER and Margaret); died on 1 Jul 1721 in , Sussex, Delaware.

    Notes:

It is theory that Mary's parents are John and Margaret of St. Anne's Parish. We know that she was not living in Ann Arundel in 1705 when her mother names her in a deed transferance. She is listed of Maryland or overseas in this transaction. She is the only Mary that shows up anywhere in Maryland records and is of the correct age. Her older brother had moved to Queen Anne's Parish, St. George's, Maryland before having children. This could easily be her connection to meeting her husband, John Ponder, of Queen Anne's, Maryland at the time. One Public Member Tree gives her surname as Simson. d. of James. James wrote his will in 1730 and names a daughter Mary Paynter in it in Sussex Co,. Delaware. DNA is backing up Turner as her surname with matches up to 5 cM's.

    Children:
    1. Mary PONDER was born about 1700 in , , Maryland; died after 1719.
    2. James PONDER was born about 1703 in , , Maryland; died in 1750.
    3. Sarah PONDER was born about 1704 in , Queen Anne's, MD; died after 1719.
    4. 6. John PONDER was born on 9 Mar 1704 in Queen Anne's Parish, Prince George's, MD; died on 3 Jul 1787 in Broadkill Hundred, Sussex, Delaware, USA.
    5. Margaret PONDER was born about 1705; died in 1784 in , , Maryland, USA.
    6. William PONDER was born about 1706 in , Queen Anne's, MD; died in 1724 in , Queen Anne's, MD.
    7. Daniel PONDER was born about 1708 in , Queen Ann's, Maryland; died after 1719.
    8. Roseanna PONDER was born about 1708 in , Queen Anne's, MD; died after 1719.

  7. 14.  John GUM was born in 1676 in Sussex Co., Delaware (son of Roger GUM and Mathilda HOLCOMB); died on 27 Apr 1731 in Broadkill Creek, Sussex, Delaware.

John married Frances POTTER before 1704. Frances (daughter of Abraham POTTER and Jane) was born in 1685 in , Sussex, Delaware; died in 1740 in Sussex Co., Delaware. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  8. 15.  Frances POTTER was born in 1685 in , Sussex, Delaware (daughter of Abraham POTTER and Jane); died in 1740 in Sussex Co., Delaware.

    Notes:

Likely relatives of Frances are Abraham Potter who sold 50 acres to a Jn. Stewart in Sussex, Delaware in 1724. He was the son of Abraham Sr. Potter whose mother, Jane, named him in her will dated 1703 and probated in 1704. Jane also named friend, Frances Gum in her will so this tells us Frances is not the daughter of Abraham and Jane, but could still be a relative. There is a James Potter who purchased land from Robert Porter that was located on the west side of Delaware bay and on the North side of Little Bush in Sussex, Delaware on May 9, 1702. Both Robert Porter and James Potter were of Kent, Province of Pennsylvania at the time that could be Frances' father or brother also.

    Children:
    1. 7. Alice GUM was born in 1706 in Sussex Co., Delaware; died in 1744 in Sussex Co., Delaware.
    2. Sarah GUM was born in 1708; and died.
    3. Abraham GUM was born in 1710; and died.
    4. Jacob GUM was born in 1712; and died.
    5. John GUM was born in 1714; died after 1 Sep 1767.
