Notes:

Edward owned a plantation in Maryland, the same state where he was born. In the 1820 FREDERICK CO MD, the following members were sorted in his family: "1m 26-45; 1f -5; 1f 16-26". He did not agree with Maryland's slave laws and therefore, moved to Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, and then to Knox and Belmont County, Ohio. According to the "History and Biography, 20th Century History of Delaware Co., Ohio", Edward Willett Benton moved to Knox Co., OH after 1824 and then to Delaware Co., OH in 1829. This isn't quite right, as Edward is in the 1830 census for Belmont Co. Ohio with the following family members: "1 male age 5-10; 1 male age 10-15; 1 male, age 40-50 and 1 female, age 30-40. He is in the 1850 Census record in Scioto Twp., Delaware Co., Ohio, page 273: "BENTON, Edward W age 66 b. MD farmer, Matilda age 46 b. MD, Catherine age 20, Rebecca age 17, Mary Jane age 14, Erasmus age 12, Nancy age 7.....all born in Ohio He disappears from the 1860 census records onward. (CL-488) He, a few family members and descendants are buried at NEWHOUSE CEM, DELAWARE, Ohio: Edw W 1782 - 7/30/1868, Matilda 8/27/1868, Benj T 1824 - 8/25/1906, Mary K 1825 - 1/7/1901, J R 1855 - 5/13/1916, Eva 1860 - 1/21/1939, and Chas B 1/9/1863 - 1/23/1941.

In the 1800 census, Benjamin and his wife were between the ages of 26 and 45. He had 4 sons and 1 daughter under age 10, one son and daughter under age 10-16, one son and daughter from age 16-26, one son and daughter from age 26-45 and 1 slave.

He's buried on his farm. Benjamin had 11 children listed in the record at the time of his death. Nathan; William W.(married Ruth Shipley 16 Dec 1835; Edward, living in Ohio; Mary, wife of Leonard Wathen; Erasmus,living in Indiana; Sarah, married William Wathen; Ann, married Archibald Shipley; Elizabeth, married Richard Edward Shipley Jan 1825; Eliza married Larkin Shipley 4 May 1829; Benjamin, married Mari Plummer 19 April 1821. "Joseph was born October 15, 1725 in Maryland.[1][2]

In August 1727, he was "bound" to Charles Roberts until the age of 21 by action of the Prince George's County Court:[3]
'Joseph Benton (son of Joseph and Anne Benton) two years old the fifteenth day of next October is by the Justices of the Court here [Prince George's County] bound to Charles Roberts present here in Court in his proper [person] until it arrive to the age of twenty one years and the said Charles engages to learn the said Child during the time [aforesaid] to read distinctly at the expiration thereof to give him a decent Suit of apparel.'

Joseph's will was transcribed and is included at Early Colonial Settlers of Southern Maryland and Virginia's Northern Neck Counties. He names his eleven children from his first wife as Joseph Benton, William Benton, Mordacai Benton, Erasmus Benton, Benjamin Benton, Nathan Benton, Hezekiah Benton, Marian Sedwick, Elizabeth Ford, Thomas Benton (dec'd. leaving children), Ann Sedwick (dec'd. leaving children).[4]

Based on this will, he is not the father of Maryan "Benton" Monical who was born in Maryland in 1768 and died in Washington County, Indiana after 1850.

He could not have been born in Montgomery County as is often stated because it was not formed till much later in time. Here is the info on him on Wikitree 2022:

"He was born about 1700 in Maryland to unknown. Joseph Benton married about 1724 in Maryland to Anne Walker. In 1748 parts of Baltimore County and Prince George's County went into the formation of Frederick County, Maryland. In 1776 Frederick County was divided into 3 parts - western portion became Washington County, southern portion became Montgomery County, northern portion remained Frederick County, Maryland, USA.

Research Notes

He could not have been born or married in Montgomery County, Maryland because it was not created until 1776. He is supposed to have resided there and if so, that would imply that he would have died after 1775.

Baltimore County, Maryland was created on 12 Jan 1659. In March 1700 there was an older Joseph Benton who bought land from Edward Smith, being 212 acres called "Smith's Forest" in Baltimore County, Maryland. [1]

His Walker wife and in-laws were born in Maryland. Her maternal grandfather, Joseph Isacke or Isaac(s) emigrated from England, was married in England in 1671 and again in 1675 to Jane Margaret Beall.
