William Calhoun, 1727-1804

William, son of Hugh and Agnes Calhoun was born in Ireland and was about 6 years of age in 1733 when the family immigrated to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

In about 1752, he married his cousin, Martha Calhoon and they started their married life in the well-known Calhoun area of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Later, they moved to a more outlying area of Lancaster County by the time their first child, George, was born on February 1, 1754. This area still was troubled by Indian attacks and George was kidnapped by the Indians when he was about 2 years old.

After this incident, William and Martha were devastated. They sold everything they owned and returned to Ireland, as they thought it was a safer place to raise a family.

When they arrived back in Ireland, they settled at Drumotolin in County Donegal, where they continued to live and have the rest of their eight known children.
Meanwhile, back in America, a small white boy of about 7 years old was discovered living with Indians by Judge Ralph Cotton. The child was determined to be George Calhoun and the Judge took him in and raised him and educated him as one of his own sons. George served in the Revolutionary War and was commissioned as a lieutenant. George later married Judge Cotton

5. Jane CALHOON was born in 1772 in , Donegal, Ireland; died on 19 May 1806 in Watsontown, Northumberland, Pennsylvania, United States.
6. Johnny Caldwell CALHOUN was born on 22 Feb 1776 in Drummontolen, Donegal, Ireland; died on 22 Feb 1838 in Watsontown, Northumberland, Pennsylvania, United States.
7. Matthew CALHOUN was born in 1777 in Drummentolen, Donegal, Ireland; and died.

Notes:

The only immigration record anywhere that matches any Calhoun to Virginia is this John Calhoun. He arrived in Virginia in 1727. He is listed under 6 index records in that year suggesting he came with 5 family members or possibly indentured servants. The former is more likely as he was several sons from being his father's first son who could have inherited his wealth. He probably was coming to America to improve his lot in the world. He would be the correct age to have a wife and 4 children at that point in time. The original records could help us clear this up. By age and place, he very much needs his historical documents and DNA descendants located to verify his relationship to others.

When studying migration patterns in Virginia, the Scotch Irish in the 18th century settled in the frontier developments. This suggests it would have been southwest of the towns at the time. There were 13 main towns established in the 1600-1700's that were Jamestown, Williamsburg, Petersburg, Onancock, Dumphries, Tappahannock, Yorktown, Norfolk, Fredericksburg, Alexandria, Lynchburg, and Charlottesville. They would have likely settled further west than these towns. John's possible son, James and also an Adam Calhoun were found in Lunenburg Co., Virginia records starting in the 1740's. Lunenburg Co. was approximately 100+ miles from Williamsburg, so the frontier was literally just 100+ miles from the original settlements in Virginia starting in the early 1600's. John would have lived someplace in this southeastern part of the state most likely. The Calhouns at that time would have to have traveled by river or horseback. These are noted to give us clues about which counties to hunt for them in.

William married Alice CUNNINGHAM in 1690 in Scotland. Alice was born in 1673 in Manor Cunningham, Donegal, Ireland; died on 12 Nov 1753 in Augusta, Virginia, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Notes:

For Williams descendants, his son John and Humphry moved to Somerset and Cecil Co. Maryland respectively. His son William might have moved to the states in some theories. His son Samuel's death date and place haven't been found. His grandson James, son of Alexander moved to Pennsylvania. He is the ancestor of American Statesman, John C. Calhoun.

We do now have a triangulation for this William between my mother and two of her cousins that indicate we descend through this William or his ancestry. They are:
