Though she goes by the name of her mother's first husband, her father was actually Ira Sampson. She learned this from her Aunt Effee in her late teens. In her marriage record, she exagerated her age by 3 years and gave her father's name as Bruce O. Riggs. She said she was 21 as of Aug. 12, 1943. She was a waitress and lived in Coolville, Ohio at the time. 4

He was a farmer in Dena, (Ohio) in 1907 according to his son Raleigh. Two children were raised as siblings of Raleigh and Art that Raleigh believes weren't his father's children. They were Harry and a woman whose name I did not catch. They were the youngest in the family. She in particular was born well after 9 months from her "father's" death.

Mabel was a short woman under 5 feet tall. She had very short legs in comparison to her body. Mabel Hetzer worked as the cook and cleaner of a large home for Edna Kibble Stewart of many years of her life. She walked to work which was quite a distance. When she got too old to walk, Edna would come pick her up. Edna's husband made a fortune from his company, Stewart Instruments. Edna's brother brought Jim boxes of books for him to read. He still has all the antique "Horatio Algier" books to this day from Edna's brother. Mabel was known for her supurb apple dumplings and home made noodles. She was a great cook.

Ira was listed at age 27 in the 1930 census rccords for Akron, Ohio. He was born in West Virginia. He had been married for 2 and a half years to a Kathleen who was age 16 when they married. They had a son William who was age 1 and 11/12ths. He was employed in the Rubber Factory in the Tube Room. He was not a veteran at the time. I can find him in no other census record. The closest social security number match to him is "Ira Sampson SSN: 298-01-9445 Born: 30 Aug 1901 Died: Mar 1963 State (Year) SSN issued: Ohio (Before 1951 )". It's a very unusual name so I suspect these are one and the same person. Jim remembers that he died when he was in college at Marietta between 1963-1965 so this would still fit that memory. This record does not give where he lived at the time of his death or his birthplace. According to his daughter, Nancy, he lived many places in his lifetime. Jim said he lived in Vienna, W.VA in about 1947. He remembers meeting him once when he was of school age where he lived in Mineral Wells, W.VA. He was drafted into World War II. He was an alcohlic and a gambler. He owned a hauling business in which he owned 2 trucks in Akron, Ohio - both of which he lost through gambling.

The interesting part is that DNA evidence from descendants of Nancy absolutely indicate that either Ira Sampson was not the father of Nancy or that Ira was adopted and did not have a father or mother with the surnames of Sampson and Kirby.

Ira married Eva Mae NUTTER. Eva (daughter of Charles Clayton NUTTER and Nancy Susan Catherine MITCHELL) was born on 18 Sep 1892 in Rocksdale, Calhoun County, West Virginia, United States of America; died on 6 Feb 1983 in Parkersburg, Wood County, West Virginia, United States of America; was buried in Belpre, Washington County, Ohio, United States of America. Eva was the only child that had moved away from home by the 1910 census. She would have been about 17 at the time that census was taken.

Grandson Raleigh remembers that his grandfather had lots of jobs. He probably worked in one of the 5 barrel factories in his home town. He did not seem to know him well.

She is the Alice who signed her brother-in-law, Otis's autograph book dated 1890. She went by her middle name in the 1880 census records also. Alice's grandson, Raleigh, said there was controversy about whether or not she was a Congrove genetically. Her birth record is listed in a Chaney bible in the possession of Jim Hetzer. Last seen it was falling apart. Raleigh did not even know if she was raised by the Congroves who are currently attributed as her parents.

He was a carpenter by trade and part of his diary is still in existance and under the care of James A. Hetzer. James A. has a DNA match with a cousin, Everett Heiney via Frederick and Sarah's daughter Mary. They have the following large segments in common verifying that they are close cousins.
