Suttone was granted four farms from his grandfather, John Bagley's will on May 3, 1648. He was the only son of Edward to be named in his grandfather's will. (C-1364) "Suttone appears on a number of occasions in the Churchwardens Book for St. Thomas, Dudley, with the last entries being as Overseer for the Poor with his kinsman Jevon Harper in March 1695 and again as a Churchwarden for 1696." When Edward Bagley's daughter, Ann died in 1699, her husband, William Brinton, wrote about her life. In it he stated that Edward, her father, had died about fifty years earlier and that her family was "not of mean rank as to worldly account." He called his father-in-law a "very honest and loving man." Edward received 30 lbs. from Elizabeth Tomlinson's nuncupative will dated July 3, 1629. Elizabeth was the mistress to Lord Dudley and all of her children were the children of this Lord. Edward was listed as "nepoti ex matre" to Elizabeth when he was assigned by the courts to be the administrator of her estate. The normal latin meaning of this term would be grandson, but according to a published authority, in this case it legally meant nephew. Which interpretation is correct is of great controversy as it determines whether Edward is a direct descendant of Lord Dudley or a descendant of Elizabeth's sister instead. He died before his father in 1645 and is buried at St. Thomas Parish in Dudley, England. Before his death, in April 1645 Edward is shown as elected one of the Overseers for the Poor in the St. Thomas Parish records. (C-1364, UA Record #:4237)

Edward married Olive UNKNOWN before 1637 in Dudley, Worcestershire, ENG. Olive was born about 1612 in Sedgeley, Staffordshire, ENG; died in 1675. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Many second hand sources say that this person's name is Ann, but Hansen who has checked the first hand records, finds that Edward's only listed wife is named Olive at the christening of their first child. She was a "Friend" by religion and outlived her husband by some thirty years. (C-1364)

John's parents in CD-102, were listed as Edward and Ann Sutton Bagley instead. John, age 27, Roland Bingham, Richard Bagly and John Baker, yeoman, were indicted for assaulting Lawrence White in Dudley. An arrest warrent/writ dated Oct. 2, 1599 was sent to the sheriff to arrest the men listed in the first indictment above, plus others. A second arrest was issued on Jan. 13, 1601. Nothing further on these arrests are in the court documents. In a different court testimony in 1631, John stated that he had lived at Old Park, Sedgely, from 1603 where he kept deer for Lord Dudley. In 1611, Lord Dudley granted him, his head deerkeeper, the ancient lodge and land in Old Park for his living quarters. By 1620, John was listed as Gentleman, age 46, in a list of Chancery depositions. The 1631 court case revolved around a suit by Walter Devereux against Lord Dudley for a large sum of debt. John Bagley was included in the efforts of Lord Dudley to defeat Devereux's claim for payment. John testified that he had lived at Old Park for 28 years. Being thrown out would leave him without livelihood. His wife was dead by the time of these proceedings. The court apparently allowed him to stay at Old Park.

By a 1637/8 court case that John brought against Thomas Russell and others, John was again only listed as a yeoman. John was appointed to administer the will of his brother George Bagley on Mar. 27, 1647. In June of 1647, John Bagley, yeoman, stated in court that Lord Dudley granted him a thousand year lease in Sedgley three years before.

His own will is dated 1648. "Catalogue Reference: Prob 11/205 Image Reference: 269/218The following is a transcript of the Will of John Bagley of Dudley, Worcestershire. Dated 3rd May 1648 and proved on 8th August 1648.In the name of God Amen Johannis Bagley (in the margin)I John Bagley of Duddley in the County of Worcester yeoman beinge weake in body but of perfect memorie and understandinge praysed be the Lord knoweinge howe un-certaine my tyme of continuance is in this life to the end that I may peaceable Carry the Testimonie of mine owne good conscience in disposinge of my temporall Estate and for the good of my children and payment of my debts doe make my last Will and Testament the third day of this instant May on Thousand six hundred forty eight and in the foure and Twentith yeare of our sovereigne Lord Kinge Charles zr. His first marriage to Margary about 1630 resulted in 6 children, before Margery's death in 1645. She was buried at Sedgley on 23 March 1644-5. He re-married to Isabella Crosse at Sedgley on 6 May 1649 at Sedgley. There would appear to be no children from this marriage. He died in 1685. See PROB 11/380 Image ref: 573/17366 will of Dudley Bagley of Sedgley.3 Samuell Bagley - Samuel Bagley, son of John Bagley. Baptised at St Edmund, Dudley on 6 February 1613. He appears in the Churchwardens records for St. Thomas, Dudley as late as March 1695-6, where he is nominated as churchwarden for the following year.4 John Bagley - John Bagley. Baptised at St. Edmund, Dudley on 29 December 1603. Possibly the John Bagley (gunsmith) buried at St. Edmund, Dudley on 17 January 1643-4.5 Sutton Bagley - Sutton Bagley, grandchild of John Bagley, testator. The son of Edward Bagley and Ollive baptised on 22 April 1637 at St. Thomas, Dudley. "He was the elder brother of Edward Bagley who become the citizen and pewterer of London and kinsman to Lady Bernard, Shakespeare's granddaughter.)6 Elizabeth Jevon - Elizabeth Jevon, grandchild of John Bagley, testator. This is most probably Elizabeth, the daughter of John Jevon and Elizabeth Bagley. The Jevon family, like the Bagleys were prolific in Dudley and surrounds.7 Margarett Jevon - Margaret Jevon, grandchild of John Bagley, testator. This is most likely the Margarett Jeaven, father John Jeaven, mother Elyzabeth, baptised at St Thomas, Dudley, 1 March 1635-6. John married Agnes TOMLINSON about 1601. Agnes (daughter of William TOMLINSON and Agnes ORRES) was born in in Dudley, Worcestershire, ENG; was christened on 25 Jun 1577 in St. Thomas, Dudley, Worcestershire, ENG; died before 3 Jul 1629. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

It is only theory that this Agnes was the wife of John Bagley whose wife's first name we have not been able to locate. If so, she would have been 24 at the time of their marriage. (C-1364) The St. Edmund Parish records are no longer readable from Jun 3, 1600 to May 3, 1601. This is the likely time period for John and Miss Tomlinson's marriage based on the baptismal date of their first child. (C-1364, 2247) There is controversy whether or not John Bagley's wife was the daughter of Elizabeth Tomlinson or her sister or sister's daughter. If she was Elizabeth's sister, the theory states she was Agnes or Joan or another unknown that like Elizabeth, did not have a christening record.

Notes:

Thomas had two wives, one unknown. Because his children listed in the St. Edmunds Parish Records, Dudley, Staffordshire, England, were born in quick order, it is guessed by me, that he married his second wife after his known children were born.

These same records have a clue to his mother's name. The year after he had his first daughter, Roose Bagley, a Roose Bagley married John Grove (1563). This Roose could be his sister or his widowed mother. In either case, Roose is a family name of import for him to name his first daughter it. I highly suspect that his mother's name is Roose, and possibly a sister's name is Roose also. As to his father, there was a Richard Bagley who died in Mar. 1573 and a Roger, whose wife died in 1566. These could be possible fathers or brothers to Thomas, with Richard being the name carried down to one of his sons. The only known Bagley at this point in time of correct age to be a grandparent to Thomas in the Dudley, England region was Robert Bagley, (b.abt 1585) a name also carried down in the lines.

Thomas married Elinore HARISONE in Oct 1562 in Dudley, Worcestershire, ENG. Elinore died about 7 May 1614 in Dudley, Worcestershire, ENG; was buried on 8 May 1614 in St. Edmund, Dudley, Worcestershire, ENG. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

It is likely that Elinor is the daughter of William Harrison, who had sons Thomas (b. 1540), Hugh (b. 1541) and Henry (b. 1544) in St. Edmunds Parish, Dudley, Staffordshire, ENG. (C-750) Elinor's name was spelled various ways in the records. She was listed as Elinore Harisone at her marriage, Eleanor Bagley as her husband's administrator, and "Olde Elner Bagley" at her burial. (C-1364)

William apparently did not leave a will. Another possible son of his was a William Tomlinson, b. abt 1580 whose descendants later marry into the Coppock line. (C-1364, E)
