    Notes:

He, like his brothers, abandoned their Quaker faith, to fight slavery. He enlisted in the Civil War in 1861 and was the rank of Captain by 1863. According to Galbreath in the 1921 Ohio State Historical Quarterly, his highest rank was Major. He became a Baptist minister in 1869 in Vinton, Iowa. He was not actually ordained until the following year at Center Point Church in Iowa. He had a son who followed in his footsteps as a Baptist minister too. (C-2187, 2246)

Family/Spouse: Mary Louvina SHUTTS. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Samuel COPPOCK was born in 1803 (son of John COPPOCK and Catherine KIRK); died in 1841 in Salem, Colombiana, OH, USA.

Samuel married Ann LYNCH on 31 Mar 1831 in Damascus M.M., Columbiana, OH. Ann was born in in , , NJ, USA; died after 1863. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Ann LYNCHAnn LYNCH was born in in , , NJ, USA; died after 1863.

    Notes:

Ann appears to have moved to Salem MM from Upper Springfield MM on a certificate dated the 4mo 26th day 1845. She went from Upper Springfield MM to Salem MM on 4/25/1845. She then moved with her children, Levi, and Maria to Salem MM, IA on 8/21/1850. She went to New Garden MM on 4/27/1860. She was disowned on 1/24/1863 from the Upper Springfield MM in Iowa, a few years after 2 of her sons participated in John Brown's raid. She had married again before they joined the movement. (C-95)

Ann is listed as a woman of intelligence, and a strong abolitionist. It is likely her influence that had her eldest sons, Edwin and Barclay join John Brown's raid of Harper's Ferry. After her sons received word that John Brown wanted them to join him, she is quoted as saying, "I believe you are going with old Brown. When you get the halters around your necks, will you think of me?" Though she believed in the cause, she strongly apposed them joining the fight. (C-744)

She lost each of her children one by one, three of them died under age 25 from disease. Two of her sons died in the cause of fighting slavery. Only one remaining child who made it to adulthood, Joseph L. Coppoc, left a large family to carry on the name. He enlisted in the Union Army and rose to the rank of major. He was for many years a minister in the Baptist Church. His contribution to the Midland monthly of September, 1895, entitled "John Brown and His Cause" is a spirited defense and eulogy of Brown. He died at Chambers, Nebraska, in 1914. (C-2246)

    Notes:

In the Ohio Archeolocial and Historical Society Publications, 1921, it states that John Coppock and his wife first moved to Mount Pleasant, then into the Northwestern Territory and within a year, to Ohio. By 1803 he lived in what later became Butler Township, Columbiana Co., Ohio This document supported by interviews with the oldest family members in Ohio at the time, states that John is a descendant of Aaron Coppock of Cheshire, England. (C-2246)

John married Catherine KIRK on 6 Nov 1800 in Little Britain M.M., Lancaster, PA. Catherine (daughter of Timothey KIRK and Lydia BARRETT) was born on 14 Mar 1777; died on 5 Apr 1871. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 8.  Samuel COPPOCKSamuel COPPOCK was born on 3 Nov 1748 in Little Britain M.M., Lancaster, PA, USA (son of John COPPOCK and Margaret COULSON); died in 1823.

    Notes:

Samuel's marriage in some 2nd hand respected books is said to be on the 11th of Dec., 1775. However, I have a copy of the original from "Quaker Records in Maryland" provided by Patti Sue McCrary and it clearly states that they married on the 7th day of the 12th month, 1775. His wife's name is also clearly stated to be Ellen Sidwell, daughter of Isaac and Ann Sidwell of Little Brittain Twp., Lancaster Co., Pennsylvania Samuel was in the 1800 U.S. Census Records for Lancaster, Pennsylvania According to Annie Natalli-Waloszek, he died about 1806 in Salem, Columbiana Co., Ohio This varies by date from other sources and needs verified. (C-703, 2250E)

Samuel married Ellen SIDWELL in 7th da 12th mo 1775 in Little Britain M.M., Lancaster, PA, USA. Ellen (daughter of Isaac SIDWELL and Ann BROWN) was born in 1756; died in Mar 1806 in Little Britain M.M., Lancaster, PA, USA; was buried in Friends Grave Yard, Little Britain Twp., Lancaster, PA, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Ellen SIDWELL was born in 1756 (daughter of Isaac SIDWELL and Ann BROWN); died in Mar 1806 in Little Britain M.M., Lancaster, PA, USA; was buried in Friends Grave Yard, Little Britain Twp., Lancaster, PA, USA.

    Notes:

Her name is listed as Ann Stillwell in the 1921 Ohio State article by C.B. Galbreath provided by Annie Natalelli-Waloszek. This sources persons still living who knew these family members. Her name is clearly listed as Ellen Sidwell, daughter of Isaac and Ann Sidwell instead in Little Brittain Monthly Meeting Records where she died and where all of her children are listed as well as in West Branch M.M. and Ireton Records. It is clearly listed as Ellen Sidwell in the Little Britain M.M. records at http://www.pa-roots.com/~lancaster/church/little/littlebritmariages.html. Her mother's name was Ann Sidwell and this is probably where a slight error in memory was published in the Ohio State 1921 article by C.B. Galbreath.
