The "History of Chester Co., PA" states that "Moses Coates possessed considerable inventive genius, and towards the close of the last century he contrived and constructed a curious apple-paring machine, which was at once simple, convenient, and highly useful in domestic economy. With some slight modifications the instrument is still in popular use. He also invented a self-setting saw-mill, which attracted much notice at the time, but of its practical importance at the present day we are unable to speak. He likewise claimed the invention of a horse-rake (which he demonstrated to President Jefferson: C-1614), among other ingenious implements. That instrument, however, was afterwards greatly improved and brought nearly to perfection in the intellectual community of Kennet Square and vicinity, where agricultural machinery of various kinds is produced on an extensive scale; but as the inventors and machinists are yet living and flourishing, their memoirs must await the historic efforts of some future county Plutarch." (C-1601)

He purchased a large tract of land that first was called Bridgetown (after his son-in-law, John Way's Hotel that had a sign of a Bridge) and then became Coatesville, PA when his son, Dr. Jesse Coates, named it in his father's honor in 1867. He built a sawmill, and a general store as parts of it's earliest constructions. He was not the original inhabitant of Bridgetown, but one of it's early white settlers. It had been an Indian village previous to William Fleming first building a home there. Moses later bought this home from William Fleming's son. The 14th post office in the county was opened in his store. He was the postmaster there and the town was named after him because of it. (C-1613, 1615) His sawmill was purchased by Isaac Pennock in 1810 who turned it into an Iron Mill run by his son-in-law, Dr. Lukens. It was called Brandywine Mills and then Lukens Rolling Mills. It was Moses' son-in-law, Jesse Kersey, that got the idea of partitioning and selling their land off that bordered on the new Lancaster Turnpike, the first road through that territory. (Wikipedia article, c 2011) He entertained many an officer during the Revolutionary War, with General Washington often being one of his guests. (C-1615) According to the DAR index in 1966, p.140, he was also a Private in the Revolutionary War from the Pennsyvania Province.

He was married either in the Quakertown MM or in the Buckingham Monthly Meeting. A book on Philadelphia marriages lists it as Buckingham and my other second hand source lists it as Quakertown. He is bequeathed $50.00 in his brother in law's will, Abraham Musgrove, brother to Moses's wife, Hannah. It was probated Mar 24, 1775. (C-2149)

Moses married Hannah MUSGRAVE on 26 Apr 1770. Hannah (daughter of Thomas MUSGRAVE) was born on 12 Feb 1752; died on 5 Apr 1775. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

He might be the Samuel who purchased land in 1737 in Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania (C-1976) He might be the Samuel who was in the Pennsylvania Gazette as lately having imported "Godfrey Cordial, Daffy Elixir, Freeman Grand Elixir, Freeman Cordial, Elixir Proprietatis, Spirit of Scurvey grass, Bathing Spirits, Hugary water and Madder" available in his shop on Market Street in Philadelphia. I suspect however, that the store owner was the Samuel who was the son of Thomas Coates and Beulah Jacques. He might also be the Samuel that was sent a letter on Oct 24, 1754 to the Philadelphia Post Office which never got delivered. (C-1681, 1808)

Samuel married Elizabeth MENDENHALL on 11 Mar 1743 in East Caln, Chester, PA. Elizabeth (daughter of Aaron MENDENHALL and Rose PIERSON) was born on 25 Oct 1723 in East Caln, Chester, PA; died on 31 Jul 1785 in East Caln, Chester, PA; was buried about 2 Aug 1785 in East Caln, Chester, PA. In 1731, Moses purchased land at the site of Phoenixville, in Charlestown, and settled there. The name of his wife was Susanna, and among his children were Samuel, Moses, Jr., Benjamin, Jonathan, Aaron, and Elizabeth, married to John Mendenhall." (C-1601)

On Sep 24, 1741, he is likely the Moses who placed an ad in the PA Gazette about a dun colored mare that wandered onto his property at French Creek, Charles Town, Chester Co., Pennsylvania. He was seeking the owner. Again on Jan. 7, 1742 in that same paper, he advertised the runaway of his Irish Servant, Cornelius Cannor and offered a reward of 3 pounds in retrieving him. It is also likely that this is the Moses whom received a letter that was still sitting in the Chester Co., PA Post Office dated Aug 9, 1759. (C-1681, 1743, 1809)

His will is transcribed here from Truman's book via an email from Charlotte Coats. #1391 M-99, MOSES COATES of Charletown Apr.14, 1761 - Apr 25, 1761. "Whereas, I Moses Coates of Charlestown township, Chester County and Province of Pennsylvania, being weak in Body, but of Sound and Perfect Memory, do this fourtheenth day of April, Anno Domini one thousand seven hundred and sixty-one, make and publish this my last will and testament, hereby disannuling and revoking all former wills by me made whatsoever. Item. I give and bequeath to my Loving wife the sum of six pounds a year during her natural life four pounds thereof to be paid her out of the interest money which is in the hands of Jonathan and Benjmain Coates and the other fourty shillings to be paid her by Benjamin Coates yearly out of his Plantation together with all the household goods that she brought with her and the new white rug and the tea-table and small Brindled cow. Item. I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughters Susanna and Priscilla Mendenhall the sum of fourty pounds each also the sum of twenty pounds to their brother Moses Mendenhall but if any or either of them should die before they come to age to recive the sd money that then their part shall be at ye disposal of their mother and the sd money is to be left on interest until ye death of my wife in order to pay her the aforesd four pounds a years. Item. I give and bequeath unto Elizth Coates daughter of Moses Coates, jur. the sum of twenty pounds to be apid at ye death of my wife. Item. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizth my large Bible. Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Moses my red cow. Item. I give and bequeath all my other household goods to son Benjamin, I also give and bequeth unto my son Benjmain the Plantation I live on according to all the butts and bounds therof with all the improvements and appurtances thereon belonging to him and his heirs forever in fee to hold the same as also that piece or prcell of land lying between the great road and ye mill land which I bought of David Davis containing twenty-one acres and a half to him and his heirs forever. Item. I give and bequeath unto my son Aaron Coates all that piece of land surveyed to him bounded by the land Moses and Jonathan Coates and John Varley containing thirty -five acres to him and his heirs forever in fee. Item. I give and bequeath my wearing apparel to my son Thomas and I do hereby constitute and appoint my son Moses Coates my sole executor to this my land will and testmaent to see that all things be performed and accomplished according to the true intent and meaning thereof. Philada 25 April then personally appeared George Sholfield and Jonathan Coates two of the witnesses of the foregoing will and the said George Scholfield on oath and the sd Jonathan Coates on his solumn affirmation according to law did declare they saw and heard Moses Coates the testator therein named sign seal publish and declare the same will for and as his last will and testament and that the doing thereof he was of sound mind memory and understanding to the best of their knowledge. This branch is possibly related to the Boelah Coates listed in a Philadelphia; Pennsylvania newspaper called the American Weekly Mercury in 1726. He/she lived in New Castle, Kent, or Sussex Counties (which all happen to be in the state of Delaware). He/she was one of a list of business persons accepting Bills of Credit to encourage improvement of business in very difficult times. Most of the list were male names so it's highly likely that Boelah Coates was male.

Moses married Susanna WELDON on 1 Mar 1715 in Cashel, Tipperary, Ire. Susanna (daughter of Samuel WELDON) was born in in Guillaedsane, , Ire; was buried on 30 Nov 1772 in , Chester, PA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

She is listed as a Quaker from the province of Munster, Ireland in the "Immigration of the Irish Quakers into Pennsylvania In Delaware County. Established in 1684."
