Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Anne COATES was born about 1766 (daughter of Benjamin COATES and Ann LONGSTRETH); and died.

    Notes:

Ann never married. She is listed as a youth, dau. of Benjamin Coates who went to Abington Monthly Meeting (Chester Co., PA) on Apr 6, 1780 in the Uwchlan MM records, Chester Co., Pennsylvania (C-1616, 2140)

Generation: 2

  1. 2.  Benjamin COATES was born about 1733 in Charleston, Montgomery, PA (son of Moses COATES and Susanna WELDON); died in 1801 in Pikeland, Chester, PA; was buried in 1801 in , Chester, PA.

    Notes:

Moses willed his son, Benjamin, his plantation (in Charles Town) plus 21 acres purchased from David David when he died in 1761. This is the Benjamin Coates who offered a reward of 3 lbs for John Wilson, age 21, who had "absconded from his bail" as in the PA Gazette on Jun 3, 1762. Benjamin was living in Charles town, Chester Co., PA at the time. (C-1755: #28750, C-1977) According to R.K. Montgomery, this family named Benjamin and Ann Longstreth Coats had children from 1758 till 1802. That would be over a 44 year period. Though possible, this is unlikely. I therefore suspect that the later children are by one of his sons, though this remains to be verified with actual records.

It is probable that some of Benjamin and Ann's children moved to North Carolina. I say this because of their daughter Cicely. She is the only Cicely Coates I have found in this time period, and there was a Cicely Coates who married a William Willis in Rowan Co., NC in 1810 and whose bondsman was Abner Coates (brother or father??). The census records for N.C. include a William and a Benjamin that might be her brothers. This needs checked. Family tradition is that Cicely came from a family with a lot of girls in it and this one would certainly match that tradition.

Benjamin married Ann LONGSTRETH on 22 Sep 1756 in , Montgomery, PA. Ann was born on 3 Nov 1737 in , Chester, PA; died in 1824. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Ann LONGSTRETH was born on 3 Nov 1737 in , Chester, PA; died in 1824.

    Notes:

Sometime after Ann is widowed, she and two of her children, Susanna and Banjamin had their births verified in the Uwchlan Monthly Meeting Records. All the rest of her family was likely married or moved out at the time. (C-2140)

    Children:
    1. James COATES was born after 1756; and died.
    2. William COATES was born about 1758 in Montgomery, Lycoming, PA; died on 18 Oct 1834 in Bradford M.M., Chester, PA.

  1. 4.  Moses COATES was born in 1687 in of Dublin, Ireland (son of Jacob Coates); died after 14 Apr 1761 in , Chester, PA; was buried after 15 Apr 1761 in , Chester, PA.

    Notes:

In 1731, Moses purchased land at the site of Phoenixville, in Charlestown, and settled there. The name of his wife was Susanna, and among his children were Samuel, Moses, Jr., Benjamin, Jonathan, Aaron, and Elizabeth, married to John Mendenhall." (C-1601)

On Sep 24, 1741, he is likely the Moses who placed an ad in the PA Gazette about a dun colored mare that wandered onto his property at French Creek, Charles Town, Chester Co., Pennsylvania. He was seeking the owner. Again on Jan. 7, 1742 in that same paper, he advertised the runaway of his Irish Servant, Cornelius Cannor and offered a reward of 3 pounds in retrieving him. (Pennsylvania Gazette)

It is also likely that this is the Moses whom received a letter that was still sitting in the Chester Co., PA Post Office dated Aug 9, 1759. (C-1681, 1743, 1809)

His will is transcribed here from Truman's book via an email from Charlotte Coats. #1391 M-99, MOSES COATES of Charletown Apr.14, 1761 - Apr 25, 1761. Wm Chrmsted, Regstr." (C-1789, 2150, E-from Will Book M, p. 99 or p. 59)

This branch is possibly related to the Boelah Coates listed in a Philadelphia; Pennsylvania newspaper called the American Weekly Mercury in 1726. He/she lived in New Castle, Kent, or Sussex Counties (which all happen to be in the state of Delaware). He/she was one of a list of business persons accepting Bills of Credit to encourage improvement of business in very difficult times. Most of the list were male names so it's highly likely that Boelah Coates was male.

Moses married Susanna WELDON on 1 Mar 1715 in Cashel, Tipperary, Ire. Susanna (daughter of Samuel WELDON) was born in in Guillaedsane, , Ire; was buried on 30 Nov 1772 in , Chester, PA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
