  1. 1.  George HOLLINGSWORTHGeorge HOLLINGSWORTH was born on 7 Apr 1712 in , Cecil, MD, USA (son of Abraham HOLLINGSWORTH and Ann ROBINSON); died in 1772 in Of Craven, Nc Or Ninety Sixth District, SC.

    Notes:

When George marries Hannah in 1734, his father, Abraham is listed as "late of Cecil County in Maryland but now (living) on the North side of Overton in the Colony of Virginia." His parents and the following siblings attended his wedding. Mary, Lydia, and Isaac Hollingsworth, plus probable spouses named Lydia, Mary and Mary Hollingsworth. Other close relatives in the right hand column were Isaac and Mary Parkins, Esther Harrison, Elizabeth Rerpo?, and Josiah Calvert. No Mccoys were amongst the guest list. George Hollingsworth was appointed Overseer of the road from Littlers to Hollingsworth's Mill in the Orange Co., VA Road Orders, Aug. 26, 1742. A George was listed in the Rent Rolls for Frederick Co., VA in 1759 and 1764 that is likely to be him. George was granted 350 acres of land in Craven Co., NC on a branch of Little River called Mudlick Creek on Feb. 3, 1767. He and his wife, "Jean", sold 155 acres of it to John Williams on July 1772. Witnesses were Joseph Hollingsworth, Quaker, George and James Hollingsworth (his sons). It also states that George gave some of his original land grant to son Joseph. Joseph gave it to David Hollingsworth. David sold it to James Burnside on Sept. 15, 1813-Jan. 1814. (C-2279)

In Medlin's book on Quakers of SC and Georgia, he lists two different George Hollingsworths. He attributes the following children to George II of the 96th District: Isaac b. 1748, d. 1809, James Sr. d. 1822 m. Sarah Wright, George, and Nathan. My other sources of information believe that these two Georges are one and the same and all the children are combined together. (C-265) None of George and Jane Hollingsworth's children appear in South Carolina death records. (C-820)

George married Hannah MCCOY on 19 Dec 1734 in , Frederick, VA. Hannah (daughter of Robert MCCOY, Sr.) died after 1748. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 2.  Abraham HOLLINGSWORTH was born on 19 Mar 1686 in Rockland Manor, New Castle, DE, USA (son of Thomas HOLLINGSWORTH and Margaret CALVERT); died in Dec 1748 in Winchester, Frederick, VA, USA.

    Notes:

Abraham moved first to Cecil Co., MD. He is probably the Abraham Hollingsworth along with Stephan Hollingsworth whose land was called "Partner's Parcel" and adjoined his father, Thomas's land known as "Jacob's Adventure." He moved to Winchester in 1733 after buying 582 acres from Alexander Ross near Winchester, VA in 1732. He named it "Abraham's Delight". Their home began as a log cabin. It was located on a creek and springs which enabled him to build the first flour mill in the county. In 1734 when his son George marries Hannah in Nottingham M.M., Maryland, Abraham's location is listed on the north side of Overton in the colony of Virginia. Abraham signed a petition in June of 1738-9 to request the clearing of a road in Orange Co., Virginia. (C-956) In his will dated Sept. 23, 1748 he bequests out 1232 acres of land, 1050 of which were on Opequon Creek near Winchester which was called "Abraham's Delight". He had obviously added to it's size over the years. (C-1546)

Abraham married Ann ROBINSON on 13 Mar 1710 in Rockland Manor, New Castle, DE, USA. Ann (daughter of George ROBINSON and Ann CURTIS?) was born about 1690; died about 1749 in Winchester, Frederick, VA, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  1. 4.  Thomas HOLLINGSWORTH was born on 1 May 1661 in Sego, Armagh, Ire (son of Valentine HOLLINGSWORTH, Sr. and Ann REE); died in 2nd da 2nd mo 1727 in Christian Hundred, New Castle, DE, USA.

    Notes:

Thomas was a member of the Provincial Assembly. He helped organize the Center MM in 1687. He married his second wife at the home of her stepfather, Nathaniel Park. He is in the Quaker records when his sister Mary was about to marry her second. He paid 4 pounds to his sister for the care of her children. She is return gave him a mare whose increase were to further the support of her children. This was required in the case of a second marriage where children were involved. (C-956)

Thomas purchased land in Cecil Co., Maryland known as "Jacob's Adventure" in 1713 but never lived on it. He willed this land to son Jacob on the 10th month, 30 day of 1725. Jacob sold this land in 1788. Thomas also sold 400 acres to John Thomson in New Castle Co., PA on Jan. 18, 1725. (C-956)

According to the book "Hopewell Friends History, 1734-1934", Thomas was killed by a bison near North Mountain, VA in 1733 when visiting his son Abraham. This has been discerned to be in error as far as date goes. He died at the age of 66 and is buried in the Center MM Friends Burial Ground in Christiana Hundred which is now a part of Delaware. (C-956)

The transcription of his will is as follows: Chris. Hd. Oct. 30, 1725. Apr. 13, 1727. South Carolina. I.186. Wife, Grace; sons, Abraham, Thomas, Jacob, and Joseph.; dau., Elizabeth Strode; dau., Hannah Dixson; dau. Sarah Discon, Grace Hollingwroth, William and Litisher Obery. Exc. wife, Grace Hollingsworth; son, Thomas Hollingsworth. (C-234)

Thomas married Margaret CALVERT in 1684. Margaret (daughter of Thomas CALVERT and Jane GLASFORD) was born on 24 Jun 1661 in Killurigan, Sego, Armagh, Ireland; died on 1 Aug 1687 in Newark M.M., New Castle, DE, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Margaret CALVERT was born on 24 Jun 1661 in Killurigan, Sego, Armagh, Ireland (daughter of Thomas CALVERT and Jane GLASFORD); died on 1 Aug 1687 in Newark M.M., New Castle, DE, USA.
    Children:
    1. 2. Abraham HOLLINGSWORTH was born on 19 Mar 1686 in Rockland Manor, New Castle, DE, USA; died in Dec 1748 in Winchester, Frederick, VA, USA.

  3. 6.  George ROBINSON was born about 1636 in , , , England (son of NICHOLAS ROBINSON (ROBBINS)); died before 1693.

    Notes:

This George and daughter Ann are often confused with other Georges and daughter Anns in two generations of the Robinson lineage that are likely cousins, sons, relatives of each other that all married into the Hollingsworth lines. It is positive that our George Robinson is not the George who married Catherine Hollingsworth (d. of Valentine) as their daughter, Ann, married a Jonathan Ogden in 1720 according to Jonathan Ogden's will dated 1727. This George was an executor for the estate of James Middleton in Chester Co., PA on Dec. 23, 1710. It lists George's children in this document as being Ann, Mary, Catrin, George, Valentine and Rebecca. (C-234)(C-233)

It is somewhat likely that our George was a brother to a James Robinson who wrote his will in 1726 in what later became Delaware. James was the father of a George and an Ann. His daughter Ann married Stephen Hollingsworth, son of Valentine Hollingsworth. James's son George came to the Shenedoah Valley in 1739, purchasing 1100 acres of land. (C-233, 234)

Even though the accepted father of our Ann is a George, it must be kept in mind that there is no proof of this. It could have been an error in research by an early family historian who was confused by the fact that there were at least two George's that had daughters named Ann of similar age.

As to Ann's mother being an Ann Curtis?, this too is conjecture based on a George Robison who died before 1693 in New Castle Co., Del. who was married to an Ann Curtis? about 1658. This is really early for them to have a daughter Ann about Abraham's age. Ann's mother would have been in her 40's at the time of her birth, so it is possible enough to be included here as theory. (C-1066)

  4. 7.  Ann CURTIS? (daughter of Samuel CURTIS).
    Children:
    1. 3. Ann ROBINSON was born about 1690; died about 1749 in Winchester, Frederick, VA, USA.

  1. 8.  Valentine HOLLINGSWORTH, Sr. was born about 1632 in Ballyvickcrannel, Sego, Armagh, IRL (son of Henry HOLLINGSWORTH and Katheran UNKNOWN); died in 1711 in Newark M.M., New Castle, DE, USA; was buried in 1711 in Newark Union Church Yard, New Castle, DE, USA.

    Notes:

Valentine's birth date and place are verified in Quaker Records. His birth place is also spelled Belleniskcrannel. He became a Quaker around 1660, a few years after George Fox visited Ireland. He was immediately fined by the government for not attending regular services of the Church of Ireland. They often times, simply took what they wanted from his supplies, prompting his move to Pennsylvania in 1682.

Valentine purchased land and the mining rights to it including the Townland, Village, Hamlet & Circuit called Ballyvickcrannell on Aug. 22, 1664. This was apparently the same land originally given to his father in 1632, but he did not claim it until 1664. For reasons unknown, he again claimed right to his father's land in Ballyvickcrannell, County Armagh, Ireland in 1675. Valentine's claim was upheld with his submission of his father's deed dated 1632, a few months before Valentine's birth. Starting in 1675, he is in multiple documents claiming rights to his father's land that are reproduced in Farmer's "In America since 1607." His claim was recognized and a fair agreement between the Blackers and Valentine Hollingsworth was established. (C-956)

Valentine Hollingsworth, wife-Ann; children: Mary Conway; Catherine; Thomas; Samuel; and son-in-law, Thomas Conway, immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1682 for "William Penn's land" from Belfast. His certificate is dated July 6, 1682. About Dec. 10, 1682, Valentine arrived on the "Antelope" under the master "Edward Cooke". Missing from the 1682 immigration were sons Henry, age 23, Enoch, age 7, and Valentine, age 5 and daughter Ann, age 2. Perhaps they were on the ship the "Sea Lion" as the GAB states that Valentine immigrated on the Sea Lion instead in 1682. (C-429, 592) (This information came from the book "IMMIGRANTS OF THE IRISH INTO PENNSYLVANIA, 1682-1750".) Valentine and family originally lived with Valentine's indentured servant, John Musgrave at the home of Robert Wade in the town of Chester. (C-956, 1546)

They then settled on 986 acres granted by William Penn on Shelpat Creek, Brandywine Hundred in New Castle Co., PA (now Delaware). He named it "Newworke". Valentine was a prominent figure in early New Castle Co., PA history. Many of the Quaker Monthly Meetings were held at his home or that of his son's. He was appointed to make inquiries about upcoming marriages. He helped found the Newark Monthly Meeting. He is listed as a member of the first Provincial Assembly of Pennsylvania in 1682-1683 and was a signer of William Penn's Great Charter. (Virkus, C-735)

He was a member of the Grand Inquest in 1683 when Charles Pickering was tried for counterfeiting. He was a Justice of the Peace in New Castle County from 1684-1688. He was again a member of the Assembly in 1687, 88, 89, 95 and 1700 serving more than any other representative in New Castle Co., Delaware. He transferred his land before his death and received an annuity from his sons from that time forward. (C-124, 956, 1448)

A Henry Hollingsworth immigrated to Philadelphia, PA in 1684. He was likely the son of Valentine Hollingsworth. He might have brought the younger children in the family with him. More detail will be known when the book by Sheppard entitled "Passenger & Ships Prior to 1684," is located and pages 62 and 164 are consulted specifically. (C-429)

Both Valentine and Ann are buried at the Newark Monthly Meeting in Delaware on land that he had donated for it's establishment in 1687. It was near his home on the east side of Brandywine. Most of the Quaker meetings were held at his home, he being the Superintendent of the meetings from 1686-1710. (C-956, 1448)

A memorial stone placed at Newark Burying Ground by some of his descendants in the 20th century states "To the memory of Valentine Hollingsworth with his family he came to America with William Penn in 1682. Obtained patent for 986 acres of land which he called New Work. A member of the Society of Friends, their meetings were held at his house and adjoining this half acre which he gave for a burying ground all Members of the Assembly from New Castle County, 1683, 1687, 1695, died about 1711 and with his second wife, Anne Calvert, is buried here. Erected by Descendants 19(35)."

In 1634, the subsidy rolls for Shankill Parish where Legacory lies lists a Thomas Calvert, yeoman at Morgenbriffe. In the Hearthmoney Rolls in 1664, a Thomas is listed at Rinurgan. (C-956). His place of death has been listed in Drumgore, Armagh, Ireland or in Maryland as well. However, the Maryland listing has been stated to be New Castle Co. and the only state that has a New Castle County is Delaware.
