8. | Nathaniel Weekes FORTE was born on 29 Aug 1767 in , St. Phillip Parish, , Barbados (son of Christopher FORTE and Elizabeth WEEKES); died on 12 Sep 1836 in , , Barbados; was buried about 15 Sep 1836. Notes: Nathaniel was the Speaker of the House of Assembly from 1829-1835, as well as J.P. and Colonel of the Militia. (F-458, 604) There is a story in the genealogical magazines of Barbados that goes like this. At an election party, a young soldier, Lieutenant John Cage was, in jest, hit on the back by a young Mr. Samuel Forte. A fight followed. Lieutenant Cage was not forgiving and demanded that a duel be held in lieu of an apology. Mr. Forte of "good family and high social position" accepted the duel and shot Cage dead. When the military tried to arrest him, he was taken into hiding by "Aunt Peg" of General William's family at the Welchman Hall plantation. He is said to have escaped the island after receiving "Aunt Peg's" help and lived the rest of his life abroad. This particular story coined the phrase "AS DEAD AS CAGE". 10. | John MILLARD was born about 1775 in Of Rosemont; died in 1852 in , , Barbados. Notes: It is conjecture that this John Millard married twice, the 2nd time to Sarah Forte. It is however, supported by the fact that John is listed as the brother-in-law in Christopher Forte's will dated 1834 and that the witnesses to the will included 2 of John Millard's daughters because they were likely step-daughters of Sarah Forte. John Millard was at one time in the Indian Navy. He became an English merchant by trade. (F-624) John married Arabella CHAVASSE before 1815. Arabella was born on 1 Sep 1778 in Burford, Oxfordshire, ENG; was christened in 1785 in Burford, Oxfordshire, ENG; died on 21 Aug 1829. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
11. | Arabella CHAVASSE was born on 1 Sep 1778 in Burford, Oxfordshire, ENG; was christened in 1785 in Burford, Oxfordshire, ENG; died on 21 Aug 1829. Notes: It is conjecture on Colin Wise's and my part that this Arabella and John Millard are the parents of Arabella Chavasse Millard. The timing, place and naming patterns suggest that it is true.
