1. | ![]() Notes: At Ancestry, my mother's descent to Mary Tharp is supported by a DNA Circle that relates 5 participants all back to this same Mary Tharp and inter-relates them to various members in the group. This is evidence that we descend genetically through this James Glenn. Mary is listed as Mary in the 1850 and 1860 census and Polly on her gravestone. As Polly was a nickname for many women's names including Mary, I am assuming that her original name was Mary. It was common for the Tharp line to name their daughters Mary and call them Polly. (CL-308) About the same time as our Mary, there were the following Tharps in Gallia Co., Ohio: 1820 Census: Abel (Raccoon Twp.) who married Polly Bruno on Sept 7, 1820; Zaus, Jane Tharp who married William Blagg on Sept 14, 1817, Jesse who married Nancy Stephens on Dec. 30, 1819, and John Tharp (Perry Twp.) who married Harriet Souls on Feb. 3, 1828. Zaus was born in 1804 in Gallia Co, Ohio. He married Mrs. Rachel Calfrey. They moved to Boone Co., Indiana and then Grundy Co., MO. He died there on Sep. 8, 1885. (CL-399) By 1830, the Gallia Co., Ohio census only lists a John Tharp in Spring...Twp. Joseph and his son Abel moved to Tippacanoe Co., IN in 1830. William Tharp is in Tippacone Co., IN by 1840. Zaus is in Boone Co., IN by then also. From the migration pattern through Gallia county, I believe they are likely to be father and brothers of our Mary Polly Tharp. Zaus (also known as Isaias after Joseph's brother?, Esaes or Isaac (after Joseph's brother?) named one of his daughters Mary Polly Tharp. (CL-425, 448) Mary married James GLENN on 31 Oct 1811 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA. James (son of William GLENN and Ann CURRY, *) was born on 4 Mar 1792 in , Augusta, VA; died on 11 Jan 1886 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 14 Jan 1886 in Glenn Cemetery, Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA. 2. | ![]() Notes: In 1785, Joseph and his father, William, witnessed a land purchase when John Heath bought 150 acres M. Cannon on Troublesome Creek. Heath and Cannon were both from Guilford, North Carolina previous to this purchase. Joseph married Elsey (Elserman) CALHOUN on 10 Nov 1791 in , Guilford, NC. Elsey (daughter of James CALHOON and Jean \ Jinette JOHNSTON) was born about 1766 in , , VA or NC; died after 1850 in , Clinton, IN. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
3. | ![]() Notes: In the 1850 census for Indiana, Elsey and her husband are living with their son Abel. She is age 84 at the time and the person who gave the info to the census taker believed she was born in North Carolina and her husband was born in Delaware.

4. | ![]() Notes: He is in Kent county, Delaware records on Aug 27,1772 with George Fleming and Wm Tharp, then on Jan 12 1775 Wm Luff and Wm Tharp. On May 13, 1772 there is an indenture between Wm Tharp and Ann wife and Thomas Hall and between J Fleming. Samuel Thorp is listed in Kent County, DE with land called New Years Chance. In 1785 he and his son witnessed a land purchase in Troublesome Creek in Guilford Co, N.C. William married Mary PONDER about 1764 in Murderkill Hundred, Kent, DE. Mary (daughter of John PONDER and Alice GUM) was born on 5 Oct 1738 in Maryland or Sussex, Delaware; died about 1816 in , Iredell, NC, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
5. | ![]() Notes: A handmade booklet on this generation of Tharps says that Mary was declared by jury as insane in 1815. This would have been the term used at the time for dementia. Son, Zadock, was named her guardian. (CL-317a) She died shortly after as her son Zadock was the administrator for her estate which he filed on May 28, 1816. The estate papers administered on May 28, 1816 lists her and William's children as William, Joseph, Zedic, Isaac, Esther, Armelia Calhoon, Unica, Kezziah, and Ann. It names one grandson Jesse who was being cared for by Isaac (Zaus).

6. | ![]() Notes: In an extensive DNA study, James is likely descended from the group of Calhouns that arrived in 1727 and 1733 and first settled in Virginia or Pennsylavania respectively. They were from a very wealthy family in Ireland and supposedly descend from Joseph of Aramethia in the bible. This family intermarried with cousins in most generations to keep the wealth in the family. Therefore, it is why we can find triangulations this far back in time. James married Jean \ Jinette JOHNSTON before 1755. Jean (daughter of Francis JOHNSTON and Jane DAVIS) was born before 1739 in of Lunenburg or New Kent, VA; died before 10 Jun 1804 in , Guilford, North Carolina, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
7. | ![]() Notes: Jane's surname is thought to be Johnson or Johnston after the middle name of her firstborn son. In Guilford Co., NC in militia records dated 1779, there are an Alexander Johnston, William Johnston, John Johnston, Gideon Johnston and Mordecai Johnston enlisted that could be leads for her relatives along with a James, William and John Calhoun. By age, they are more likely her nephews if she is a Johnston by birth.

8. | ![]() Notes: William was born abt. 1681/1682 because he is listed at age 65 in Aug. of 1747 in a deposition in Talbot County, Maryland. William married Jane (OISTONE) AUSTIN on 8 Jan 1709 in St. Peter's Parish, Easton, Talbot, MD. Jane (daughter of Thomas AUSTIN and Hannah FOSTER) was born about 1689 in St. Peter's Parish, Easton, Talbot, MD; died in 1730 in St. Peter's Parish, Easton, Talbot, MD. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
9. | ![]() Notes: Jane's name is also spelled Oistone. In 1701, Jane inherited 50 acres of "Austin". Her sister, Mary, received an equal share. In 1715, Mary and her husband, John Worleysmith, sold it to Denis Lary. Denis proceeded to sell it in 1717 to William Tharp, husband of Jane. This 100 acre section that was probably Jane's childhood home went to sons John and William who sold it to John Plummer when they moved to Kent Co., DE in 1750.

10. | ![]() Notes: In 1725, he sold 150 acres of land to Thomas Groves in Sussex Co., Delaware as per deed records for that county. He signs the deed as John J. Ponder. Below the signature is the word Mark, so the J in the middle of his name could be his mark for John. Luke Watson and Mary Woodward delivered the deed. No wife is mentioned at the time. We have proof that his wife was Alice Gum from a March 1735 will made by Alice's father in law, Griffith Jones. It refers to John Ponder (yeoman) and his wife Alse Gum d. of John Gum as the daughter in law of Griffith Jones. John married Alice GUM before 1726. Alice (daughter of John GUM and Frances POTTER) was born in 1706 in Sussex Co., Delaware; died in 1744 in Sussex Co., Delaware. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

12. | John CALHOUN (theory) was born in 1692-1696 in Donegal, Ireland (son of William COLQUHOUN, Burgess "of Strabane" and Alice CUNNINGHAM); died in 1772 in Virginia, USA. Notes: The only immigration record anywhere that matches any Calhoun to Virginia is this John Calhoun. He arrived in Virginia in 1727. He is listed under 6 index records in that year suggesting he came with 5 family members or possibly indentured servants. The former is more likely as he was several sons from being his father's first son who could have inherited his wealth. He probably was coming to America to improve his lot in the world. He would be the correct age to have a wife and 4 children at that point in time. The original records could help us clear this up. This is one of the six indexed items for him: Accession #: and 9999419977 Gale Id: 1166491, Source publication code: and 3700, Source: and Passenger and Immigration Lists Index He has no descendants up on Gedmatch as of Mar 24, 2018. By age and place, he very much needs his historical documents and DNA descendants located to verify his relationship to others. John married Mary (Theory). [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
