  1. 1.  Samuel COATE, *Samuel COATE, * was born on 10 Jan 1670 in Lambrook, Somerset, ENG; was christened on 10 Nov 1670 (son of John COATE, * and Elizabeth HUMPHREYS); died before 23 Dec 1723 in Amwell Twp., Hunterdon, NJ, USA.

    Notes:

We have several cousins who descend from different sons of Samuel in our YDNA group to prove our descent from Samuel Coate, b. 1670! See these findings at: http://www.ancestrees.com/henrycoatebabt1595ydnagroup.html

Samuel Coate from Somersetshire, England first appears in Pennsylvania with his father, John Coate in 1685. (C-568) He could be the Samuel Coates who arrived in Maryland in 1682. In 1699, through an instrument in writing, his father gave him 200 acres of land that he had purchased on Mar 13, 1689 from Israel Taylor. Samuel, himself, had purchased 23 more acres from this same Israel Taylor on Nov. 16, 1696. After his father's death, in late 1699 or early 1700, Samuel sold the land he inherited from his father John and settled in Burlington Co., NJ.

One source entitled, "The Samuel Coate Family" says that Samuel settled near his brother, Marmaduke, who came over in 1717 (1713) and settled in Burlington Co. as proved by the will of Ann Coate, widow of Marmaduke. (1929) (C-549d) I believe this brother relationship to be an error as John Coate had a son Samuel but no known son, Marmaduke. It is more likely that Samuel and Marmaduke were cousins and this was the kinship referred to in Ann Coate's will. Another possible way the "Samuel Coate Family" erred in saying he lived near his brother, Marmaduke, is that Samuel did live fairly near his older brother James, who came to Philadelphia. James and his other brother Henry supposedly came over after their father, John and brother Samuel. (C-1542)

He appears often in Quaker records in the Middletown Monthly Meeting of Friends, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. He signed a testimony against the sale of "rum or other strong liquors to the Indian" on 11/5/1687. He witnessed several marriages: 1) Jeffery Hawkins and Ellen Pierson on 9/21/1687 at the home of the bride, 2) William Smith and Mary Cronasdale on 1/12/1688, and 3) his elder brother James and Mary Watson at the Philadelphia Meeting House on 12/8/1691/92. He was a member of the Grand Jury of the Quarter Sessions Court in Bucks County, PA on 7/13/1693. He was a road juror ordered by the court to help lay out a cart road from Newtown to the ferry house at a session dated 12/1693, the second Wednesday of the month. He declared his intention to marry Mary Sanders on 11/3/1694/5 at the Middletown Meeting. Samuel and Mary also declared their intention to marry at the Falls Meeting on 12/6/1694/5 also. It appears they went to both meeting houses a second time to inform all interested family and friends of their intent to marry on 12/7/1694/5 and 1/6/1694/5 before proceeding to marry. Samuel was on a Petit Jury on 10/9/1696, a Common Pleas Jury on the 10th month, 1697 and a Grand Jury on 7/14/1698 and 1/8/1698/9.

In 1700, after his move to Burlington Co., NJ, there is a Samuel Coate who was listed as one of the men who helped survey and lay out a by-road for accommodating the "back inhabitants" leading into the Kings Road. (C-1668) Since he is the only Samuel I know of living in Burlington Co., NJ in 1702, the following records also likely apply to him. He and Samuel Beard acknowledged to the court that they owed the King forty lbs. which was to be levied on their goods, chattles and tenements on condition that Samuell Coates keep the peace particularly toward Elizabeth White and Elizabeth Brown. These two women had attested to the court that they were afraid he would abuse or ravish them and felt their lives were in danger. The court then ordered Samuel Coates to find security to prove his intention was peaceful. Samuel was also charged with four others of neglecting service on the road in that year. In that same year in court, Samuel was named as one of the new Constables from Burlington. These records were summarized in "The Burlington Court Book, a Record of Quaker Jurisprudence in West New Jersey, 1680-1709", by H. Clay Reed. (C-1673)

On 1/10/1702/3, he submitted the purchase of a deed for 3 acres of land in Newtown, with the deed dated 9/16/1696. He appears to have sold that land plus 19 other acres to Shadrack Walley on that same day, 1/10/1702/3 and then submit it to the courts on 7/8/1703. In 1705 he was named as a Grand Juror in the court records. (C-1673) The Old York Road went from Market St. in Philadelphia through Newtown, Bucks Co., PA to land he later bought in Springfield, Burlington, NJ and in 1722 in Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ (at least 400 acres) over the Delaware River. It appears his sons inherited different parts of this land that had then become Bethlehem Twp. which later became Kingwood, Hunterdon Co., NJ and possibly Amwell Co., NJ.

Here are the deed records that belong to him in NJ records:

He and his family took a certificate to Buckingham from Burlington on March 6, 1723 (the same year he died). Quaker minutes mention sons John and Henry and in the Women's minutes from Buckingham it mentions Mary Coate and daughter Elizabeth. (C-549c, 995, 1086)

Samuel purchased the land they moved to in 1723 on April 17, 1722: 400 acres of land in Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co. from Robert Eaton adjoining John Holcombe's land. (This land is now a part of Mercer Co., NJ.) Samuel Coate was listed as of Springfield, Burlington Co., NJ at the time. He also purchased an additional adjoining 100 acres according to the deed where his son William sells 150 acres of the land in 1728. (I'm suggesting this extra land purchase also included land in what became Bethlehem Twp. (and then Kingwood Twp.) as that is where we can verify his son John's land was. He was a carpenter and appears to have established a ferry service there known as Coate's Ferry on the Delaware River. Opposite him was a service owned by John Wells known as "Wells ferry" on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware. It is interesting to note that this ferry service later became known as Coryell's Crossing (Corryell's Ferry in Lamberton, NJ) and was where Washington crossed the Delaware in the Revolutionary War and is the scene of the famous painting of same. It was approximately 5 miles from what had become Trenton, NJ at the time.

On Aug. 24, 1723, John Bainbridge, Samuel Coate, Thomas Curtis, Joshua Anderson, Andrew Smith, and Nathaniel Leonard, freeholders, received tax money from Capt. Ralph Hunt for the running of the government in Maidenhead, Hopewell, Amwell and Trenton Townships, NJ. I have no further details in his involvement in running the townships than this record in the deeds of NJ. (C-2152)

After Samuel's death in 1723, his land on the hill along Yoark Road went to sons John, Henry, and William. His will was written Nov. 22, 1723 and proved Jan. 8, 1723/24. It lists wife Mary, children: John, Henry, William, Marmaduke, Samuel and Elizabeth. (C-549d, 1078, 1433) In his will, he is referred to as Samuel Coate, Gentleman, of Amwell, Hunterdon Co., NJ. He bequeathed 200 aces to son John, 200 to son Henry and the rest to son William. His Executors were sons, John and Henry. It was witnessed by Jon Holcombe, John Wells, and Benjamin Willcocks. The inventory of his estate dated Dec. 23, 1723 included a clock, the family bible and other books and was made by George Green and John Holcombe In 1728, his son John sold 200 acres of the tract of land he was given by his father, to John Purcell. In 1732, John Coate, of Bethlehem, N.J. (which later became Kingwood Twp., NJ) sold 30 acres more of this land to John Holcombe. It is a home built by this John Holcombe that Washington stayed in twice during the Revolutionary War. (This 1732 deed mentions adjoining posts belonging to William and Henry Coate's lands.) (C-153)

Two Coate names appear in Freeholders lists for New Jersey, that could be his sons. John Coates was a landholder who was selected as the 42nd juror in Bethlehem Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ in 1741 (Vol. 37, pg. 56-Genealogical Mag. of N.J.) and Henry Coates was a land holder in Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ. (C-294, Vol. 37, p.54)

Son Marmaduke is in Quaker records when he married Sarah Mathis in Little Egg Harbor, 1747. (C-549c)

Son William is still puzzling. He or his uncle account for the William who witnessed a Quaker marriage in Burlington County, NJ. He sold his land, 150 acres, that he inherited from his father, Samuel, on May 21, 1729 to William Cornwell. (C-549d). We do not know how much land he received from his father, as deed records do not tell us the amount that Samuel first purchased. We know it was large enough to encompass 197 acres that went to his son-in-law, Roger Fort, 200 acres to son John, 200 acres to son Henry and all the rest which included at least 150+ plus acres to son William. That could also indicate that William is his oldest living son. It is likely that he still retained some land as his name is mentioned in a deed of sale by his brother in 1732. (C-153) This is possibly the William who moved to what became Newberry County, SC by 1762. (See William's bio on ancestrees for further details as he could also be the William Coats who lived in Northern Liberties, Philadelphia, PA by 1734.)

  1. 2.  John COATE, *John COATE, * was born about 1641 (son of Henry COATE, of Hambridge and UNKNOWN); died on 29 Feb 1700 in Kingsbury, Somersetshire, ENG.

    Notes:

We now have absolute proof that we descend through John's father Henry with another YDNA tester in our Coats Surname Project at FTDNA. This cousin descends from a different son of Henry's that ends up being forced to migrate to Australia. Thank you, Australian cousins for helping to prove this line from 1595 to the present!

I also triangulate with autosomal DNA cousins who descends through John and Elizabeth Coate's daughter, Ann Coate, on chromosome 7 in overlapping segments as our 1st common Coate ancestor, tentatively suggesting our descent from John and Elizabeth. Back in this distance of time, the cM's segment match length is small enough that it can't currently prove the descent. I expect that the fact that we triangulate improves the statistical proof, but we will have to wait till the mathematics in this field also improves to know for sure. I would guess that John's mother's name could be Elizabeth from his 2 daughter's names. Ann would have been named after his mother-in-law, JoAnn.

Here are the facts that we do know about John Coate. He was the father of our Samuel Coate of Somerset Co., England; Newtown, PA and Hunterdon Co., NJ proven by the fact that Samuel was given 200 acres of his father, John Coate's land in Newtown, Pennsylvania via letter dated August, 1699 from Somerset, England one month before John Coate died in England. John was married to Elizabeth Humphreys in England and had the following children: John, Henry, James, Samuel, and Elizabeth. His children's births are registerd as being from the Kingsbury Episcopi M.M., Middle Divison of the Somerset Quarterly Meeting in England. Quaker records were only kept in their monthly meeting from 1665-1673. They list both John and Elizabeth as parents. They are listed right before his nephew Marmaduke married to Ann Pole's children are listed in this Middle Division of the Somerset Monthly Meeting records all in the same hand. They likely were transcribed from their Monthly Meeting records kept until 1673. It is known that they had four small children and one on the way in 1672 when it was recorded that his house had been burnt down and his wife was expecting. This matches well with the birth dates of his children. However, he could have had more children from 1673 onward that were not in the records. One source lists him with a daughter named Ann. This fits well with info on descendants of an Ann Coate (1673-1762) married to a Roger Fort (1669-1749) in the United States. (E)

He lived in Lambrook, England, which adjoins the town of Curry Rivel on the east. He is often listed in the Illchester Monthly Meeting Minutes or Southern Division Monthly Meeting Minutes as it was known beginning in 1670.

Other events in his lifetime are as follows.

1668 His wife, Elizabeth Coate, sister to John Humphries, was reprimanded for being married by a priest indicating that John was not a Quaker at the time of his marriage. Kingsbury MM, Somerset, England.

John married Elizabeth HUMPHREYS on 29 Dec 1663 in Kingsbury M.M., Somerset, ENG. Elizabeth (daughter of Johanas (John) HUMPHREY and Joan) was christened on 11 Jul 1647 in , Somerset, ENG; died before 1686 in Kingsbury, Somerset, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Elizabeth HUMPHREYSElizabeth HUMPHREYS was christened on 11 Jul 1647 in , Somerset, ENG (daughter of Johanas (John) HUMPHREY and Joan); died before 1686 in Kingsbury, Somerset, England.

    Notes:

Her name is definitely Elizabeth Humphreys. According to Quaker records when she is listed as the wife of John, her birthdate is given as July 7, 1647. She is listed as the mother of John's children in the 1660's in Somerset Co., England. Her surname is proven to be Humphries because of the following extracts from Minute Book 1 of Illchester M.M. in county Somerset, England. "15/12/1668 7th minute, from Kingsbury Meeting, "That Thomas Budd and George Taylor do again go and visit James Humprheys and Elizabeth Coate, his sister, and in God's love, warn them again to clear their conscience by their obedience to the truth, and that they no longer absent or withdraw themselves from the assemblies of God's people." 25/12/1668, "That Thomas Budd and George Taylor do again go and visit James Humprheys and Elizabeth Coate, his sister ...and that Elizabeth, as she is in a capacity, come to the Friend's Monthly or give forth a testimony against her being married by a priest."

Further evidence has been found in the Southern Divison Quarterly Meeting Records which transferred data from the Monthly Meeting records into lists by one recorder. In the middle of the listing for John and Elizabeth Coate's children, her brother James Humphries and previously unknown wife Joan is listed with the birth of their daughter Joane Humphries. Her brother James is then listed in the baptismal records for the Church of England as from Kingsbury Episcopi and the son of John and Joane Humfry. Then to put the cherry on the cake, she and husband John Coate, named their first child John after her father. This was the most common Quaker naming pattern.

Elizabeth did not ever come to America. She might be the Elizabeth Coate, widow, who died in the month called Feb of 1720/21 in Hambridge according to Somerset Quarterly Monthly Meeting Records for Somerset Co., England. (1720 In month 12, Eliz. Coate of Hambridge, died. [http://www-personal.umich.edu/~bobwolfe/gen/mn/m3350x3351.htm] ) The problem with this is there is a John Coate of New Towne, Pennsylvania who was listed free of marriage engagements when he requested a return to England in the 1686. Therefore, I am accepting the theory that he was married twice, both times to an Elizabeth. (C-199, 253c)

  1. 4.  Henry COATE, of HambridgeHenry COATE, of Hambridge was born about 1595 in Of Curry Rivel, Somerset, England (son of Marmaduke COATE and Marie SOMNER); died about 1662 in Hambridge, Curry Rivel Parish, Somersetshire, ENG.

    Notes:

All historical research led us to believe that our Coate line went back through this Henry to his father Marmaduke. We now have a wonderful YDNA match from a cousin in Australia whom has only 1 point out of 37 DNA points different from us. It proves we descend from this Henry Coate, The Elder, who is the most recent common ancestor we have in common. I am so grateful for this. We finally know for certain after 40 years of research via DNA. How truly wonderful!

He is often called Henry "the Elder" or Henry C. in family member trees. I have seen no actual proof of either. It's possible that he is the Henry "The Elder" listed as the father of an Elizabeth when she married John Podger in Burton, Drayton, England, but this remains to be proven. John or Elizabeth Podger or their children are NOT in this Henry's will. I have therefore given him the name Henry Coate of Hambridge to distinguish him from the Henry of Burton in Drayton Parish, Somerset, England.

Henry named 5 children in his will, among them Marmaduke and John. He wrote his will on Aug 8, 1661 in Hambridge, Curry Rivel Parish, England and is listed by the title of Yeoman. It was proved in January of 1663 at Taunton. Henry Coate of Hambridge in the Parish of Curry Rivel within the County of Somerset, Yeoman, by his will gave: To his son Henry "wearing apperel and one pair of boots and 20 pounds." To his son John "four score pounds and one bedstead voer the entry and my best feather bed with one pair of sheets, one pair of blankets and cover bed and two bolsters there unto belonging": and several other articles of furniture, etc. Unto his daughter Rachel 10 shillings, Unto his daughter Mary 10 shillings, Unto his grandchild Jane Counsell 8 pounds, Unto grandchildren William Sugge, John Perry, Henry Perry, John Jermane, Jonathan Coate, Mary Coate, Elizabeth Coate, Mary Sugge, and Edith Coate 20 pounds each Unto Jane Rowsewell his grandchid one shilling. The rest of his goods and chattels he gave to his son Marmaduke whom he made sole executor of his estate. (C-253c) His known 3 sons all became Quakers through marriage in some cases and some of his daughters. They typically attended the Kingsbury Episcopi Monthly Meeting which was fairly small. They all had interconnections as their children married. The burial page for this monthly meeting in the Somerset Quarterly Meeting Records for the Southern Division included less than 30 people most of whom became related as they married. One small family of Humphries were amongst this group, Elizabeth Humphrey marrying John Coate. Other Coate's that remained in Curry Rivel, England remained faithful to the Church of England in that time period. The fact that the will remains means that he was considered one of the wealthy and his will had been transcribed in another site saving it from the bombings of World War II.

I am descended through his son John married to Elizabeth. As for autosomal DNA we also have small segment matches because of the distance back in time. A cousin is descended through the Marmaduke married to Edith that I have sorted as the son of this Henry Coate named Linda Midgett W. Blum. I'd like to know if we and a Joseph Edge are related through DNA as he descends from Marmaduke and Edith Coate. I have found an autosomal DNA triangulation with cousins who descend from this Henry through other children than I do. It is considered tentative back in this period of time because of the small size of the shared DNA and distance in time. They are 7th cousins to my Uncle for Henry Coate 1595, chromosome16, segments 28234964-34708422 7C, Gedmatch Kits M935084, Z397630, A497476. In any case, Y-DNA has now proved the connection so the autosomal DNA is just icing on the cake.

  2. 5.  UNKNOWN died before 1662.

    Notes:

Her name is Jane Batholomew according to Steven T. Ernst on ancestry.com. Her name is Emily Jane according to the Joseph Edge Family Tree. She is the first spouse of Henry Coate according to some trees with his other spouse being Joan Combstork/Comstock. If he also was married to a Joan Combstock that occurred on Apr. 28, 1656 in the Parish of Drayton. No wife is mentioned in Henry's will.

    Children:
    1. Rachel COATE was born after 1617 in Hambridge, Somersetshire, ENG; and died.
    2. Mary COATE was born after 1617 in Hambridge, Somersetshire, ENG; and died.
    3. Henry COATE was born about 1620 in , Somerset, ENG; died in 1663 in Curry Rivel, Somerset, England; was buried in Curry Revell, Somerset, England.
    4. Alice COATE was born before 1625; died after 1640.
    5. Marmaduke COATE was born on 8 Sep 1634 in Hambridge, Somersetshire, ENG; died on 22 Jun 1686 in Hambridge, Somersetshire, ENG.
    6. Jane COATS was born before 1635 in Of Curry Rivel Parish, Somerset, England; died before 1661 in Of Stoughton, Somerset, England.
    7. 2. John COATE, * was born about 1641; died on 29 Feb 1700 in Kingsbury, Somersetshire, ENG.

  3. 6.  Johanas (John) HUMPHREYJohanas (John) HUMPHREY was born about 1620 in Kingsbury Episcopi, Somersetshire, ENG (son of Jacob (James) HUMPHREY and Johane DENMAN); died in Jan 1682 in Drayton Parish, Somerset, England; was buried on 9 Jan 1682 in Drayton Parish, Somerset, England.

    Notes:

We know that John is the father of our Elizabeth Humphries because he is listed as her father in her brother James' christening record. We knew her birthdate from Somerset Quaker records previously. I have found only a few other siblings for them in the records in Kingsbury or Drayton where Joane died. With the gap in their ages, it's highly likely that they had other siblings not in the published records or that their mother had a series of miscarriages.

John is listed as the son of a Humfrie in the Kingsbury Episcopi records if he is the Johannes baptized in 1620 there. Kingsbury Episcopi is where most of the earliest Humfry's in co. Somerset, England can be found. There are several possible father's of this John in Kingsbury at the time. They are George, b. 1597, son of Thomas; Peeter b. 1597, son of William; and James b. 1595 who married Johane Denman in 1614. James was the son of William b. 1595 according to Somerset baptismal records. Both the names James and Peter are repeated in this family with James being the more common choice and Peter repeated only once.

I'm working off the theory that our John is the son of James as he names his first born son James. The only other possibilities I've found are 1) a John and Mary that married in 1613 in Drayton, Somerset, England, 2) a John and Agnis Humfry that married in Drayton in 1610 or 3) An Edward and Havis Hue Humfrey who married in Drayton in 1623. The best fit and theory is that John is the son of James b. 1595.

Johanas married Joan before 1647. Joan was born before 1632 in Of Wiltshire, England; died on 3 Aug 1679 in Drayton Parish, Somerset, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Joan was born before 1632 in Of Wiltshire, England; died on 3 Aug 1679 in Drayton Parish, Somerset, England.

    Notes:

She is listed as the spouse of John Humfry when she died in Drayton. Her mother's name is likely Elizabeth and that is where the name of their first daughter came from.

  1. 8.  Marmaduke COATEMarmaduke COATE was born before 1552 in Of Curry Rivel, Somerset, England; died in 1624 in Curry Rivel, Somerset, England; was buried in Currey Rivell, Somerset, England.

    Notes:

The oldest Coate in Somerset, England according to I.G.I. records is a Robert Cotes, b. abt 1140 in Fairbanks, Somerset, England. His daughter Margaret, was supposedly born in Cotes, Eccelshall, Staffordshire, England suggesting he might have come from Eccelshall. Staffordshire is the county where the oldest Cotes are known to have originated. If these trees are correct, then it's entirely possible that our Marmaduke goes back from Cotes of early Staffordshire, England in the Eccelshell branch. YDNA evidence supports his ancient lines going back to Staffordshire.: The best theory we have for our Coate line is that it descends through this Robert, b 1140. Fairbanks was in Somerset or Shropshire depending upon time frame and is 130 miles from the oldest known Coate's who lived in Bridgwater, Somerset, England.

Early Coates would have been more likely to travel south from Fairbanks to the Bristol Channel and go to Bridgewater by ship. Then the land travel would have been more like 80 miles of distance.: Marmaduke's name in his marriage to Marie was spelled Cote. He married Marie Somner on Nov. 6, 1575 in Weston Zoyland, 3 miles from where he lived in Curry Rivel. They supposedly raised their children in Curry Rivel. (See further explanation below.): Marmaduke's will was written on Mar 4 1617 when he is listed "of Curry Revel". This 1617 date is the oldest date I've seen for the Coate name appearing in Curry Rivel, suggesting the family could have come from another Parish before that time period. It named his wife, Mary, and sons, William (a legacy), Thomas, (a legacy) and Henry (pasture in Bindiche "together with common of Estones in the same Bindiche to have and to hold the said Henry Coate for and during the residue of the terms of four score years..." and daughters, Rachel and Mary and two grandchildren through his son William named John and Joane. (C-253c)

This Marmaduke's wife's name has been listed as Mary/Marie Skinner by theory since Marie named kin Alice Skinner in her will. Other than that, there is no evidence of same. Skinner would have likely been Alice's married name.: I've finally found his marriage record. It was extremely difficult to decifer in an odd old English script. In an index of Somerset marriage records, his wife is listed as Maxine Flinner in 1575 in Weston Zoyland. Weston Zoyland was 3 miles from Curry Rivel, England. I had been studying all original documents on Coates in Somerset for 4 months when I found this marriage for Marmaduke Cote and Maxine Flinner and could immediately see the first name was mistranscribed. Her first name was Marie. Upon a serious study of her surname, I discovered it was Smner in the efficient manner the clerk had. There are multiple Somners in the area that marry in Weston Zoyland. Please study the following important records.: (See ex: [https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/60856/42886_1831109331_1079-00031/3274786?backurl=https://www.ancestry.com/family- tree/person/tree/156863795/person/112065703116/facts/citation/522095021473/edit/record] for the original marriage record. Then study the uncommon letter styles the recorder used at the following site to discern the name of Marmaduke's wife: https://fh.familysearch.org/system/files/team/AIT/fsinformation/Resource_Guide/en/Old_English.pdf. The small r in Marie that the recorder used looks like an x. Small e's look a bit like a small o. The S he used at the beginning of several persons of the same surname as Marie used the Capital S that is the 23rd choice out of 26 choices on page 5 of the website linked above. It looks like a printed Fl to the untrained eye. Then to make it that much harder, the clerk of courts left out letters or abbreviated names in the interest of efficiency and spelled her last name Smner. His version of William on the pages looks like Wittm. He even used 2 different capital S's in his work to further complicate matters too. I had spent the entire summer deciphering old English script to sort all of the Coats in Somerset, England. Her name is definitely Marie Somner and certainly is difficult to translate correctly. It's why it took so long to find! There were 2 other siblings or cousins who married within a couple years of her. One was Francis Somner/Smner to Joan Bragge in 1575 and the other was William (?h)inge and Margaret Somner/Smner in 1577 all in Weston Zoyland.

The original name Coate first appeared in the highlands of Scotland between 800 and 1000 A.D. as Coutts, Coats, and Coates. They were a sept or sub-clan of the Farguharson Clan which branched from the clan Shaw in Scotland. (C-2021). To see where these clans lived, there is a site on the Internet that has an appropriate map at ysiwyg://102/htt;://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/3145/scotmap.h tml. This clan was one of the most faithful supporters of the "House of Stewart". (C-2247 b, c):

The first person of this name that has been found in England was in 1167, when Thomas de Cotes was knighted. He held land in the hamlet of Cotes in Staffordshire. The Coat of Arms of a Cock with the motto "Watchful and Bold" was adopted later by this family. (C-614L): The surname has been stated to have one of two meanings. 1) Cot or Cote meaning hut as in cottage or coat as in garment. 2) Coed/coid meaning wood. Until the 17th century, the name was usually spelled Cotes in England. (C-2158): It's important to note, that English records before 1642 are rare for baptismal, marriage and burial making it a bit difficult to trace previous to this date. Some will records existed before 1642 and many of all of these records were in Latin. Marmaduke's name appears to have been Marmaduci in some Curry Rival records because of this.: Even though this ancestral couple is so far back from us, there are tentative indications where DNA is suggesting we have our line traced correctly through the best current technique which is triangulation. They are as follows:: Marmaduke Coate bef 1552 & Mary Tentative: Chromosome 12: 20465327-21761436 2.2 cM's, Gedmatch #'s Z397630, M134445, A631906 : Marmaduke Coate bef 1552 & Mary Tentative: Chromosome 12: 21064601-21865495 gedcom's 595579, 299684 Gedmatch #'s Z397630, T455875, M134445: Marmaduke Coate 1552 & Mary Tentative: Chromosome 20: 18944125-19594148 8C/Niece gedcom's: 595579, 299684, 194406, Gedmatch #'s: Z397630, T455875, M134445: Even better, we have the best proof that you can get via an Australian cousin's YDNA which shows us that we are absolutely both descended from Henry Coate "The Elder", Marmaduke and Marie's son. That is the Most Recent Common Ancestor for them and many persons in our YDNA group at FTDNA including me.

    Birth:
    Event Description:

Marmaduke married Marie SOMNER on 6 Nov 1575 in Weston Zoyland, Somerset, England. Marie (daughter of Richard? SOMNER) was born about 1562 in Maperton, Somerset, England; died in 1631 in Curry Rivel, Somerset, England; was buried in Currie Rivell, Somerset, England. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Marie SOMNERMarie SOMNER was born about 1562 in Maperton, Somerset, England (daughter of Richard? SOMNER); died in 1631 in Curry Rivel, Somerset, England; was buried in Currie Rivell, Somerset, England.

    Notes:

I finally found the marriage record for this Marmaduke and Marie. In the index, her name is listed as Maxine Flinner, but when you enlarge the original book it's in, it looks like Marie Smner. This clerk left out vowels when not needed phonetically. In this case the S is represented by 2 small f looking letters. It's possible that it is how the clerk wrote Skinner, which is the same name in the soundex search on freereg.org.uk as Somner but the small k would normally be very flowery and was a very simple uncrossed f looking letter in her marriage record. We don't believe the double f letters represent f in this case as there were not translations for fnner or fmner in all of Somerset in freereg.org.uk.

She wrote her will on Nov. 2, 1626 in Curry Rivel, Co. Somerset as a widow. She named all the children and the number of grandchildren she had by each child in her will which was probated in 1631. These included her son, William Coate and his 4 children (William, Cresset); her son, Thomas Coate and his 3 children (Mary, Joan and Elizabeth); her daughter Rachel German and her 3 children; to John Woodborne's 3 children, to Mary Woodborne, daughter of John Woodborne, to John the son of John Woodborne; to Joane Woodborne, the daughter of John Woodborne; to her son Henry Coate a chest in the hall and after his decease to his son Marmaduke Coate; and to her kinswoman, Alice Skinner. (Note: Alice Skinner is likely the Alse Skinner, widow who died in Dunster, Somerset, England and was buried there in St. George Parish on Aug 12, 1632. Many Skinner's lived in Dunster. She could also have had her surname misinterpreted and be the Alse Somer who died in 1638 in Othery, Somerset, England who was a widow.) She gave the rest of her goods after division of her debts to John Woodborne and Henry Coate. She named these last 2 her executors. She does not explain her relationship to John Woodborne, father of Mary, John and Joan Woodborne in her will. Her name was spelled Marie Coate in this document. (I believe they are great grand children via a marriage record dated 1655 to a Marmaduke Coate indicating Mary Woodborne was born before 1626 and was a gr. granddaughter by age.) The witnesses to this will were Roger Cole, William Sawble and William Sawellysis with his mark of an X. I'm assuming because she thinks so highly of John Woodborne, that his wife was a deceased daughter of her and Marmaduke Coate's. Her kinswoman, Alice Skinner was likely near her age with Skinner being her married name. The will was proved in Taunton in 1631.

The fact that it and any of these Somerset wills that I have summarized in my Somerset Coate records survived the bombings of World War II says that they had 2nd copies hand transcribed at an alternate location near the time they were created sent to Taunton, Somerset, England. All wills of the wealthy were duplicated and sent to Taunton. Those did not get bombed in World War II.

Her most likely parent is a Rich/Richard Somner/Sommer from Othery which is 3.6 miles from Weston Zoyland where Marmaduke and Mary married. It is now a part of Bridegwater where Marmaduke Coate was from before he and Mary settled in adjacent Curry Rivell. Here is how the Somner's are grouped in Othery, Bridgewater and Weston Zoyland

    Notes:

It is theory that James is the father of our John. The other choices are a John and Elizabeth Humphrey in Kingsbury Episcopi that were married in 1588, a George b. 1557 and a Thomas b. 1563.

Jacob married Johane DENMAN on 14 Nov 1614 in Kingsbury Episcopi, Somerset, England. Johane (daughter of DENMAN) was born about 1593 in Kingsbury Episcopi, Somerset, England; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
