  1. 1.  Wesley TOBINWesley TOBIN was born on 3 May 1831 in , Guernsey, OH, USA (son of Isaac TOBIN, * and Matilda Ann(a) BENTON); died on 13 Aug 1897 in Rio Grande, Gallia, OH; was buried about 16 Aug 1897 in , Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Family tradition as presented by my Great Aunt Gladys states that Wesley Tobin was a full Irishman and his wife, Mary Ann Danner was Pennsylvania Dutch. (CL-102) (Two of his great-granddaughters, Wanda Getz and Peg, both felt Wesley had some American Indian ancestry. Several members of the family have had his high cheek bones. This is also supported by the fact that the women in this family of the last 4 generations have had dimples in the upper part of their hips again indicating Native American ancestry. ) They met at an Old Brick Inn where she probably worked. Mary Ann Danner's father was born in Pennsylvania.

Wesley had been raised in Monroe Twp., Guernsey Co, Ohio. His birth date is contradictory in second hand sources and census records, being either 1830, 1831, or 1835. His birth place is given as Ohio or Virginia. (CL-102) He moved to Gallia Co. in 1851, married on May 21 or on March 4, 1854 depending on which second hand source is used. He was a merchant, fur dealer, and farmer. The family resided in a log house on their farm on range 34 of Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. My grandfather, William Edward Clark, was born in this log house. Sometime, thereafter, it burned totally down. According to a great-granddaughter of Wesley, Sophia Clark Liggett, the family then proceeded to clean out the chicken coup and use it for their living quarters. (CL-141)

In the 1874 "Gallia County Ohio Atlas", Wesley lives one section south and west of Adamsville (now Rio Grande, OH), and one section south of Rio Grande College, Twp. 6, Range 16, section 34. (C-590 In the 1870 census for Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., OH, Wesley's property is listed as worth $3700.00 and his personal estate worth $500.00. (CL-305) This is greatly up from the 1860 census which lists both values at $300.00. In the 1880 Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio census, he was 45 and a farmer with wife, Mary, age 44, Wesley 22, Mary A. 20, and Lola was age 18. Lola attended school within that year. In the next house, John Tobin, age 24 lived with wife Ellen who was age 15. (CL-231)

Wesley Tobin died of a heart attack and is buried with his family at Old Pine Cemetery at a location next to a fence. He gave a portion of his farm or equivalent funds to each of his children near the time of his death. Ad- ministration records for his farm, seem to suggest that the children received the land before the administration and that they hired someone to work the farm for a period of five years at that time. Wesley's death date is stated as 13 Aug. 1898 in this document, but was actually 1897 when the document is studied in full and his tombstone inscription is noted.

  1. 2.  Isaac TOBIN, * was born on 29 Jul 1803 in , Loudoun, VA, USA (son of Nathaniel TOBIN, * and Elizabeth JACOBS); died on 9 Oct 1881 in Springfield, Sangamon County, Illinois, United States of America; was buried about 12 Oct 1881 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, USA.

    Notes:

Isaac is probably Wesley's father, but this is not certain. In various census records that Wesley is in, his parent's place of birth is listed differently in many. In 1860, his parents are listed as from Wales. In the 1880 census, whomever gave the info to the census taker said his parents were born in Ohio and his mother's father in Pennsylvania and her mother in Virginia. In Wesley's brother, John W. Tobin's 1900 census, it says that his father was born in Virginia and his mother in Maryland. This matches Isaac's info. This Issac was born in Virginia, but is listed as Wesley's father in my Uncle Talmadge's family tree obtained by interviewing family members in the first half of the 20th century. Another of Wesley's brothers, Edward Willett, in the 1900 census, has his father's birthplace listed as Ohio and his mother's as Virginia. Obviously, this family didn't talk much with their spouses about their parents. Wesley was a name carried down a lot, though the Isaac wasn't. Isaac and Matilda's first home after their marriage was in St. Clair Co., Ohio. By 1829, they moved to Guernsey Co., Ohio. (CL-327)

Isaac purchased land from Andrew and Mary Noble in Guernsey Co. Ohio for $250.00 on 2 July 1842. It was located on the southeast quarter of Section 4?, Township N 4 of Range No. 2 containing 40 acres. (CL-288) Isaac Tobin owned 1200 acres of land in Guernsey Co., OH, sections 13 and 14, Monroe Twp. according to the 1840 tax lists. In "Stories of Guernsey Co., Ohio it lists it as 120 acres in 13 and 14 in 1840. One of these figures is probably in error. He was also listed in the 1840 Federal Census Records in Guernsey Co., OH, pg. 382, Monroe or Washington Twp. as Isaac Tobing: Males/1 under 5/ 2 age 5-10/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 15-20/ 1 age 30-40, Females/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 30-40, 3 persons employed in agriculture. (CL-117) It is not known where he resided after 1840. They again moved in 1854 to Horse Creek, Cotton Hill Twp., Section 23, Sangamon, IL. (now Woodside Twp.)

Birth and death information on Samuel and John Tobin come from 1900 Ohio Census Records and Ohio Grave Registration cards. In both cases, their parents were not listed, so the data is only tentatively correct based on date and birth place. If John Tobin's dates turn out to be correct, he was also in the civil war, enlisting Sept. 3 1864 as an army private, Co. E, 176 Reg. C.V.I. (CL-137) U.S. Federal Census Records Checked 1820: Culpepper Co., VA p. 98a 1830: (Isaac Toben) Frederick Co., VA, p.134 1840: Guernsey Co., OH pg. 382, Washington Twp. Isaac Tobing: Males/ 1 under 5/ 2 age 5-10/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 15-20/ 1 age; 30-40 Females/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 30-40; 3 persons employed in agriculture (CL-38, 58, 117b)

Isaac married Matilda Ann(a) BENTON on 22 Oct 1826 in , Belmont, OH, USA. Matilda (daughter of Edward Willett BENTON and Hannah DUVALL, *) was born on 7 Nov 1810 in Hagerstown, Washington, MD; died on 6 Apr 1864 in Cotton Hill, Sangamon, IL; was buried about 9 Apr 1864 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  Matilda Ann(a) BENTON was born on 7 Nov 1810 in Hagerstown, Washington, MD (daughter of Edward Willett BENTON and Hannah DUVALL, *); died on 6 Apr 1864 in Cotton Hill, Sangamon, IL; was buried about 9 Apr 1864 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, USA.

    Notes:

Matilda's birth year doesn't match her age in the only census we've found her in before she was married. She is listed at age 5 in the 1820 census for Frederick Co., MD. However, her age of 30-40 in the 1840 census would match.

    Children:
    1. Elizabeth E(Llen) TOBIN was born after 1826; and died.

  1. 4.  Nathaniel TOBIN, *Nathaniel TOBIN, * was born in 1771 in , , NJ, USA (son of Isaac (Tobey) TOBIN, * and Phebe THOMSON); died on 4 May 1846 in Monroe?, Guernsey, OH; was buried about 7 May 1846 in Birmingham, Guernsey, OH.

    Notes:

We know for certain that Nathaniel is the son of Isaac as there have been at least 5 DNA matches from all of Isaac's son's lines that match back to Isaac. (https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Tobin) We don't yet have DNA evidence that Isaac is the son of James and Esther Tobin as often placed in print. (2015) Nathaniel, farmer, "of Loudoun County" bought two lots in Washington, Culpepper Co., Virginia, in 1800. He and Elizabeth and his father apparently moved onto this property in 1806. In 1810 he is the Nathaniel that is living in Culpepper Co., Virginia. That Nathaniel has 3 males age 0-10; 1 male age 26-45; 1 female age 0-10; and 1 female age 26-45. Nathaniel and family moved to Guernsey Co., Ohio in about 1823/24. His father Isaac followed him there several years after. (CL-111)

Family tradition that pertains to Nathaniel Tobin as remembered by Clarence Tobin of Guernsey County and recorded by Ric Tobin (Copied letter in this author's possession), is that: "Nathaniel, (Clarence's great grandfather) settled in the military land from Zanesville, Ohio. (Specifically, he bought land at $1.00 per acre on the Birmingham, Peoli Ridge). He came by an oxen pulled wagon from Maryland (In probability, VIRGINIA, although Elizabeth was from Maryland according to son George W. 1900 census info.) when Clarence's grandfather was six years old. The Hollingsworth family came with the Tobins. They settled near what is now Birmingham, Ohio They lived about two miles apart and they were the only families in the area. The Tobins were Irish." This move to Guernsey Co., Ohio, probably occurred in the mid 1820's, sometime after Mar. 9, 1823 as he is listed in the Virginia County Taxlists at that time. Nathaniel brought his family with him. His father, Isaac, followed within a few years. He received 40 acres of land in the US Military Survey on Nov 7, 1837 as recorded in the Zanesville land office in TWP 4N, Range 3W, and Section 9. (CL-542) The 1840 Federal Census Records, Guernsey Co., OH, #397, p. 385 lists Nathaniel Tobin: Guernsey Co., Monroe Twp., 1 male age 15-20, 1 male age 60- 70, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 50-60. (Note: His wife should have been listed as between age 60-70, also, not 50-60.)

Nathaniel's tombstone states that he died May 4, 1845, aged 74 years, but his will found in Will Book B, p. 149, is dated May 4 1846 and probated on June 8, 1846. Because the date on the tombstone is possibly in error, perhaps Nathaniel's age is in error also. A 1771 birth date does not seem correct as his parents did not marry until 1775. (CL-113,123,124) _______________________________________________________ Transcribed copy of "Nathaniel Tobin's Will" (with original spelling and punctuation retained) by Linda Coate: Be it remembered that at the June (terms) 1846 of the court of common Pleas in and for the county of Guernsey in the state of Ohio held at and in the courthouse within and for the county of Guernsey aforesaid on the Eighth day of June in said year the last will and testament of Nathaniel Tobin late of the county of Guernsey aforesaid deceased being brought into court for Probate (I. 3. 6.  Edward Willett BENTONEdward Willett BENTON was born on 4 Apr 1782 in , , MD, USA (son of Benjamin Smith BENTON and Susannah WILLET); died on 30 Jul 1868 in Ostrander, Delaware County, Ohio, United States of America; was buried in Newhouse Cemetery, Delaware, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Edward owned a plantation in Maryland, the same state where he was born. In the 1820 FREDERICK CO MD, the following members were sorted in his family: "1m 26-45; 1f -5; 1f 16-26". He did not agree with Maryland's slave laws and therefore, moved to Phillipsburg, Pennsylvania, and then to Knox and Belmont County, Ohio. According to the "History and Biography, 20th Century History of Delaware Co., Ohio", Edward Willett Benton moved to Knox Co., OH after 1824 and then to Delaware Co., OH in 1829. This isn't quite right, as Edward is in the 1830 census for Belmont Co. Ohio with the following family members: "1 male age 5-10; 1 male age 10-15; 1 male, age 40-50 and 1 female, age 30-40. He is in the 1850 Census record in Scioto Twp., Delaware Co., Ohio, page 273: "BENTON, Edward W age 66 b. MD farmer, Matilda age 46 b. MD, Catherine age 20, Rebecca age 17, Mary Jane age 14, Erasmus age 12, Nancy age 7.....all born in Ohio He disappears from the 1860 census records onward. (CL-488) He, a few family members and descendants are buried at NEWHOUSE CEM, DELAWARE, Ohio: Edw W 1782 - 7/30/1868, Matilda 8/27/1868, Benj T 1824 - 8/25/1906, Mary K 1825 - 1/7/1901, J R 1855 - 5/13/1916, Eva 1860 - 1/21/1939, and Chas B 1/9/1863 - 1/23/1941.

Edward married Hannah DUVALL, * on 7 May 1806 in , Montgomery, MD, USA. Hannah (daughter of Lewis DUVALL, * and Anne WELSH, *) was born about 1790; died in 1817 in Of Frederick, MD, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Hannah DUVALL, *Hannah DUVALL, * was born about 1790 (daughter of Lewis DUVALL, * and Anne WELSH, *); died in 1817 in Of Frederick, MD, USA.

    Notes:

Early 20th century DAR records state that Hannah is the daughter of Benjamin Duvall, a Revolutionary War Soldier. However, there is clear evidence that this is not the case. Hannah Duvall married Edward Willett Benton in 1806 in Montogmery Co., Maryland records. Private Benjamin did not live there. Plus she is clearly listed as the heir of Lewis Duvall of Montgomery Co., Maryland (the county where she married) according to his estate settlement in 1817 where his children received equal shares of his estate. This is verified in the c1952 book entitled "Mareen Duvall of Middle Plantation" by Harry Wright Newman.

    Children:
    1. 3. Matilda Ann(a) BENTON was born on 7 Nov 1810 in Hagerstown, Washington, MD; died on 6 Apr 1864 in Cotton Hill, Sangamon, IL; was buried about 9 Apr 1864 in Springfield, Sangamon, IL, USA.
    2. Susanna BENTON was born on 1 Dec 1812 in , , Maryland; died on 4 Dec 1891.

  1. 8.  Isaac (Tobey) TOBIN, *Isaac (Tobey) TOBIN, * was born on 23 Jun 1750 in Amwell Twp., Hunterdon, NJ, USA (son of James TOBIN and Esther KIDWELL); died in 1836 in , Guernsey, OH, USA; was buried in 1836 in , Guernsey, OH, USA.

    Notes:

I have not yet proven with certainty that the parents of Isaac are James and Esther Tobin/Tobey. Isaac Tobin was a Revolutionary War Soldier. He resided at Hunterdon Co., New Jersey at the time of his enlistment. Records of his birth are in the family bible according to Isaac's Pension Application dated 1833. The bible is in an unknown location. He first enlisted for 3 months starting Sept. 1776 under Captain Joshua Corshon's Co., Col. Chamber's Regiment. He was stationed at Woodbridge as a guard to military stores. He enlisted in the fall of 1777 for one year as a drummer, rank of private, in Capt. Thomas Patterson's Co., Col. Dayton's New Jersey Regiment, but after 4 months he took sick with the Bloody Flux and was given permanent leave. This information was from his pension application. According to Ric Tobin, a current researcher of the Tobin line, Isaac served 3 times in the Revolution and may have been at Valley Forge.

After the war, he lived in Hunterdon Co., New Jersey; Loudoun (apr.1790-1806) and Culpepper (apr.1806-1824) Counties, Virginia; and Madison Twp., Guernsey Co., Ohio (1830-1836) where he died. There is a possible sister, niece or daughter to him, Peggy, who married John Vaughn on Dec. 17, 1807 in Culpepper Co., VA while he resided there. He seems to have spelled the name Toby or Tobey while living in New Jersey, and Tobin from Virginia on. He is in the Hunterdon Co., New Jersey Tax Ratables lists in 1778 as owning a house, 10 acres and 2 horned cattle. Again in 1780 in the Hunterdon Co. Ratables, he is listed as owning 11 acres, no house and 1 hog. (CL-197) A will has not been able to be located for him at this time. Center Cemetery, where he is buried is probably located in Center Twp., just off Rte. 22, east of Center, not accessible to the road. His marker is no longer standing according to family researchers who have attempted to find his grave sight. Here is a time line of Isaac's life as it appears in public records: Feb. 1776: Nathaniel Tobey made a deputy by the high sheriff, John Baines, in a case before the Inferior Court of Common Please, Trenton, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey involving Isaac Tobey. Isaac was to appear before the court to answer a plea by Joshua Corshon for 298 pounds proclamation money which Isaac owed. (Miscellaneous Records #33454). Notes:

Though he was born in Anne Arundel Co., MD, he grew up in Rock Creek Parish which at that time included Prince George and Frederick Co., Maryland. Parts of Frederick Co. became Montgomery Co., Maryland which could account for the fact that he raised his own children in Montgomery Co., Maryland. He took the Oath of Allegiance in 1778 in Montgomery Co., in front of Magistrate Edward Burgess to verify his patriotism in the Revolutionary War. In the first census of the United States for Frederick Co., Maryland (1790), there were 2 males over age 16, 4 under age 16, 5 females and 6 slaves in his household. (CL-697)

He was sued by Stephen Musgrave. On Nov. 18, 1791, the court decided in Stephen Musgrave's favor and ordered that Lewis' property, "Richardson's Range" be sold at public auction. Thomas Cornelius Howard was the highest bidder. Howard received the land formally on Dec. 26, 1795.

Richard Morgan and his wife, the niece of Lewis Duval, also sued him. The court again went in the favor of Richard. This time he had to sell "Richards Range, Bristol and Rogues Harbour" for the settlement. On June 16, 1798, Isaac Webster received the properties.

In the 1800 census for Montgomery Co., Maryland, he is probably the Lewis Duvall with the following information, although a Lewis Duvall Jr. is also listed which looks like it could be him instead. If he is the Lewis Duvall, he and his wife are over age 45. They have one son under age 10, one son and daughter from age 16-26 and 3 slaves. If he's the Lewis, Jr., he and his wife were over age 45. They had a daughter from age 10-16, one daughter and 2 sons from age 16-26 and 7 slaves.

He appears to sell to his son John on Jun 15, 1815 for $493.00, "Richardson's Range" and "Roque's Harbour". He called himself Lewis Duval, Sr. at the time. His wife, Ann, waived her dower rights.

He died without leaving a will before Sept. 15, 1817 when his estate was probated. Son Philip was named administrator.

Lewis married Anne WELSH, * before 1763. Anne (daughter of John WELSH, * and Hannah HAMMOND, *) was born before 1750; died before 9 Aug 1825 in , Montgomery, MD, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 15.  Anne WELSH, *Anne WELSH, * was born before 1750 (daughter of John WELSH, * and Hannah HAMMOND, *); died before 9 Aug 1825 in , Montgomery, MD, USA.

    Notes:

Ann wrote her will in 1818, not quite 7 years before her death. In it, she only named her children, Elizabeth Owens and Lewis W. Duvall. Witnesses were Ephraim Etchison and Samuel Welsh, Sr. It is not known how Samuel is related, but it is suspected that he might be her brother. A Samuel Welsh lived in Montgomery Co., MD and witnessed the sale of land by John Ward to Henry Griffith on Oct. 16, 1779. (CL-707)
