1. | Robert EVANS was born on 8 Dec 1783 in Bush River M.M., Newberry, SC, USA (son of Robert EVANS and Rebecca COPPOCK); died after 1823. Notes: It appears that this Robert called Robert Evans Sr. in a Jan. 11, 1823 Deed sold land to his son Robert that had been purchased by Robert Evans Sr.'s father in 1770 on Bush River. (C-2603) Robert married Keren Happock GAUNT on 28 Feb 1805 in Bush River M.M., Newberry, SC, USA. Keren died after 1823. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
2. | Robert EVANS was born about 1744; died on 4 Mar 1784 in , Newberry, SC, USA; was buried in Bush River Quaker Burial Ground, Newberry, SC. Notes: Robert was a young man when listed as one of the first Quakers to settle in the valley of Bush River somewhere in the 1762-1765 range most likely. He was obviously a well respected member to the Bush River Monthly Meeting. He was often appointed to take care of the affairs of the Quaker Church. Ex.: He was one of the persons appointed to check on the clear intent of a man, Joseph McNeal, who had requested marriage on the 1st mo. 1779 in the Bush River Monthly Meeting to Elizabeth Perkins. Robert purchased 200 acres of land on Aug 24, 1770 on Mathias Branch of Bush River adjacent to James Dobbins, John Myers, John Coate, Benjamin Neal and William Dillan. (C-2603) Robert was in the 1779 Old Ninety Sixth District census records along with John Coats (his neighbor?). His death was reported to the Bush River Monthly Meeting on Mar. 27, 1784 as occurring on 3/4/1784. He was buried at the Friends Burial Ground at Bush River and was listed at age 40 at the time of his death in Hinshaw's Quaker Encyclopedia. His wife was listed in the 1790 census. Some of their children moved to Tennessee and some moved to Miami County, Ohio. (C-95) Robert married Rebecca COPPOCK in 1761. Rebecca (daughter of Moses COPPOCK and Martha LESTER) was born after Sep 1740; died in 1801 in , Newberry, SC, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
3. | Rebecca COPPOCK was born after Sep 1740 (daughter of Moses COPPOCK and Martha LESTER); died in 1801 in , Newberry, SC, USA. Notes: Rebecca after she was married witnessed her sister, Marther Coppock Tomlinson's Quaker marriage in 1771. Rebecca is the Rebecka Evans living next to Gentleman John (John Sr.) Coates in the 1790 Newberry, SC index. She had 2 males above age 16, 1 male under age 16 and 4 females in her family. Her husband was obviously deceased as she was listed as the head of household. I know this to be her, because her husband, Robert Evan's land, adjoined Gentleman John's land in 1771. She is the only Rebeckah Evans listed in the 1790 census in that region. (C-1906)

6. | ![]() Notes: There are some sources from the early 1900's that state that Moses and Martha came to America from England. (C-356, 1519f) This has been shown to simply be a misinterpretation of the truth, as the Coppocks had been in America from England originally since the 1680's. (C-710) It should be noted that all of the early 1900 records of many separate family members who submitted information to A.E.Krell, several of them state that they were descended from Moses and Martha Scarr Coppock. Martha Lester was the supposed widow of a Mr. Scarr before she married Moses. (C-683) Moses married Martha LESTER on 22 Sep 1740 in , , NJ, USA. Martha (daughter of Peter LESTER, daughter of Peter LESTER and Joyce UNKNOWN) was born before 1721 in , Bucks, Pennsylvania, USA; died about Feb 1797 in , Newberry, SC, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
7. | ![]() Notes: Martha's surname is usually published as Lester but she was also stated to be a Scarr in some sources suggesting that she had a previous husband. The New Jersey Colonial Records dispell both. When she marries Moses in 1740, she is simply listed as Martha Lester with no indication of being a widow or having the name Scarr. Her husband's name is simply Moses Coppock and her father is listed as Peter Lester, yeoman. They were both listed as of Richland Twp., Bucks Co., PA in the NJ colonial marriage records found in the New Jersey Archives, Marriage Licenses, Set 2, Reel 8, p. 57 1/2 (C-683, 2220, 2298) From the above record we know that Martha is the daughter of Peter, but which Peter, Sr. or Jr.? They both lived in Richland Twp., Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. Martha's parents are invariably listed in second hand sources as Peter and Mary Lester with her birth date being given as 1704 or 1719 respectively. Let's attack this problem from Martha's age.

12. | Bartholomew COPPOCK, III was born on 1 Jan 1682 in Marple, Chester, Pennsylvania, USA (son of Bartholomew COPPOCK, Jr. and Margaret YARWOOD); died in Feb 1761 in West Chester, Chester, PA, USA. Notes: This Bartholomew has a birth date of Oct. 1, 1681 in Elizabeth Harris' E-mail letter dated 9/8/95. (C-613) According to a second descendant, Rodger Smith, Bartholomew and Jacob Jonathan were twins. He was given the family bible and the journal of George Fox, the famous Quaker leader, in his father's will. Bartholomew owned land adjacent to his father's land in Springfield, Chester Co., PA in a deed dated Oct 13, 1709. (C-2136) Bartholomew married Rebecca MINSHALL, (Mendenhall) on 5 Sep 1704 in Springfield M.M., Chester, PA, USA. Rebecca (daughter of Thomas MINSHALL and Margaret HICKOCK) was born on 1 Apr 1685 in Chester Nether Providence Twp., PA, USA; died on 29 May 1708 in Chester M.M., Chester, PA, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
13. | Rebecca MINSHALL, (Mendenhall) was born on 1 Apr 1685 in Chester Nether Providence Twp., PA, USA (daughter of Thomas MINSHALL and Margaret HICKOCK); died on 29 May 1708 in Chester M.M., Chester, PA, USA. Notes: Rebecca was born the 1d, 4m, 1685 and died on 29d, 5m 1708. She and Bart Coppock were both of Springfield Twp., Chester Co., PA when they married. Elizabeth Harris in an E-Mail letter gives the marriage place as Springfield MM, Pennsylvania Rebecca had a twin named Jacob in some sources, but it looks more like they were born two years apart to the day in transcribed Quaker records provided by Lappin. (C-613, 1073, 1304d)

14. | ![]() Notes: Peter and Joyce did not have any children listed in "The Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks" by Clarence V. Roberts, c. 1925. However, a recent copy of the marriage record for Moses Coppock and Martha Lester found by Patti Sue McCrary states that Martha Lester is the d. of Peter Lester, yeoman (farmer), of Richland Twp., Bucks Co., Pennsylvania Since this is where Peter lived during his adulthood, it makes perfect sense that this is the Peter who is Martha's father by timing and place. His own father, Peter, would have been near 80, and probably not listed as a farmer -- even if he was still living at the time. Peter was deeded 200 acres of his father's land in Richland on May 15, 1721, in the area known as the great swamp. It is highly likely that his father was living with him for over a 20 year period since the elder Peter had deeded away all of his 600 acres to his son-in-laws and son a good twenty years before his death. Land records need checked for Peter Jr. as the "Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks" states that he sells this land at 2 different times - in 1724 and 1741. He had purchased 204 additional acres in 1739 on Cooks Creek near Durham, Springfield Twp., Pennsylvania. That land was sold in 1742 suggesting to me that he had possibly died at this time. Peter married Joyce UNKNOWN before Oct 1716. Joyce died after 1740. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
15. | Joyce UNKNOWN died after 1740.
