David and his wife, Mary, listed in Middletown, CT where they reared a large family. (F-496) His will as presented at http://dunhamwilcox.net/wills/doud_david1740.htm follows:"Digest of the Early Connecticut Probate Records(Hartford District),Charles W. Generation: 3

  1. 4.  John DOUD was born on 24 May 1650 in Guilford (Now Madison), New Haven, CT (son of Henry DOUDE and Elizabeth WOLCOTT); died in Feb 1712 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA.

    Notes:

In Guilford Vital records, there is a Hannah, wife of John, who died Apr. 19, 1687. This is probably this John's wife. She died young after they had had two children. (F-496) Note that John remarried about 11 months after this death. (F-426) One Mormon Ancestral file record says that he had two other wifes besides the two I have listed of unknown name. (F-463)

John married Mary BARTLET on 15 Jan 1688 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA. Mary (daughter of Deacon George BARTLET and Mary CRUTTENDON) was born on 1 Feb 1655 in Guilford (Now Madison), CT; died in Nov 1724 in , , Connecticut, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Mary BARTLETMary BARTLET was born on 1 Feb 1655 in Guilford (Now Madison), CT (daughter of Deacon George BARTLET and Mary CRUTTENDON); died in Nov 1724 in , , Connecticut, USA.

    Notes:

"Bartlett" comes from an old Norman French surname, "Barttelot" The Bartlet name is first found in England with an Adam Barttelot, Esq., who served under William the Conqueror and died in Co. Sussex in 1100 A.D. He was given lands for his service in Ferring, Susex where the next 5 generations lived. In the 5th generation, his descendant, John Bartlett bought lands in Stopham, Sussex, England where his descendants still live today. It is not known how our Mary ties into the lineage. (F-531, 633)

It is conjecture at this point, who Mary's parents are. A Mormon Ancestral file record gives her birth date as Sept. 11, 1669 of Guilford, New Haven, CT. It also states that she is the daughter of George and Mary Cruttenden Bartlett. However, upon checking the Barbour Collection which is an excellent second hand index made of the vital records for Connecticut, Mary's birth date is not in them. This birth date is likely a misinterpretation of Mary Crittendon Bartlett's burial date which is listed as bd, Sept. 11, 1669. In the Barbour Collection, bd means burial date.

However, I still find the most proof supporting the belief that Mary is the daughter of Mary Crittendon and George Bartlet and likely to have been born near her mother's death. First, our Mary was from Kenilsworth/Killingworth at the time of her marriage, a town ten miles Northeast of Guilford Twp., Connecticut where George and Mary had lived.

In fact, Kenilsworth/Killingworth abutted Guilford, divided by the Hammosett (River?), which had an original size ten miles in length. (F-503) Another child of George and Mary Bartlett also lived in Killingworth at the time, Daniel Bartlett. The fact that Mary is not in the vital records as the child of Mary and George Bartlet is also not surprising.

Another daughter tied to George and Mary in Talcott was not placed in the town records either, i.e. Deborah, until her marriage. (F-499) There is also one more unaccounted for female Bartlett that was only in the vital records at the time of her marriage, that is also highly likely to be the daughter of George and Mary. A Judeth Bartlet married John Boyd on Mar. 28, 1676/7 in Killingworth, CT. (F-502) So what we have is only one Bartlet, Deacon George Bartlet, living in the Guilford/Killingworth area of an age appropriate to be the father of all the other Bartlet's known living in the area.

Our Mary, Deborah and a Judeth are listed in the marriage records, but were not recorded in the birth vital records as the daughters of George. Also note that all three of these ladies had their last name spelled the same as George's name was spelled, Bartlet.

It is my belief that these daughters had to be daughters of George and Mary Cruttendon Bartlet. Since both these parents died while having young children, it seems likely that recording of their births was simply not made. (F-463) The only other Bartlets in Connecticut at the time that could be parents to these young ladies all lived in Hartford County, CT. Their surnames were consistently spelled Bartlett with 2 tt's, unlike the Bartlet's of the Guilford/Killingworth area. John Bartlett of Windsor Twp, Hartford (m.1641?) (One researcher believes she is descended from a John, perhaps this one??? (F-477); Benjamin and Deborah Bartlett of Winsdor, Hartford (m.1665); Esaya (Isiah) and Abia Bartlett of Windsor Twp., Hartford (m.1663); Josia Bartlett of Windsor, Hartford (m.1664?); Robert and Ann Bartlett of Hartford, Hartford (m.1643?) (F-332); and Edward Bartlett (d. 1676) in Windsor leaving a will, (F-504). I have checked the Barbour collection for a Mary, Deborah or Judeth Bartlet, being born to any of these, and have not found them in the vital records for these families either. (F-502)

As far as our Mary goes, it is true that if she was the daughter of George and Mary Bartlet as seems likely from time and place, she was the second living daughter of theirs to be named Mary. This would have been possible, if she had been born near her mother's death. Multiple children were given the same names in a family in the history of England, even when an older sibling was still living. This pattern would still would seem possible in this time period especially if Mary had been named to honor a dying mother.

  4. 7.  Mary HILTON was born in 1672 in Middletown Twp, Middlesex, CT, USA (daughter of John HILTON); died after 1738.

    Notes:

The parentage of Mary Hilton is not verified in primary documents. Savage states that a John Hilton died in Middletown in Dec. 1686 or Jan. 1687 leaving a daughter Mary, aged 14. If she is this Mary, she was born about 1672. (F-322)

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Henry DOUDE was born in 1612 in Guilford, Surrey, ENG; died on 31 Aug 1668 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA; was buried on 31 Aug 1668 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA.

    Notes:

It is family tradition that the Doudes were originally from Ireland. Henry Doude immigrated in 1639 from Guilford, Co. Surry, England (17 miles sw of London) under the guidance of Reverend Henry Whitfield and settled in Guilford, Connecticut. (F-99) He was an indentured servant. (F-507) He built a home 1/4" mile from the northeast corner of the "Green" on the road passing on the east side of the "Green." His descendant, William Dowd was living in his home in 1885. His exact residence at the time of his death and grave sight are unknown though they are likely to be near where his home was. Many of the earliest members were buried in the village green that he lived near.

He married before leaving England as there is no record of marriage or first born as well as a few other children in Connecticut. He signed his name "Doude" under the heading of PLANTERS on shipboard before landing at Guilford. He was one of the founding fathers of Guilford, CT and is on the 1650 Planters list, although he hadn't yet been admitted as a Freeman. A later list which probably includes only freeman gives his death date as Aug. 31, 1668. (F-498, 501, 526)

There is a chance that this Henry's wife, Elizabeth, mother of Thomas Dowd, is confused with another Henry Dowd's wife. Torrey's "New England Marriages", says that Elizabeth, wife of Henry, was b. in 1639 or 1648. This would make her the age of her children. The original source needs to be rechecked. (F-427) It would make sense if those were the possible marriage dates instead.

The births of only some of his children are recorded in the town records. (F-496) His possible parents have been identified as Thomas and Elizabeth Doude by a Doude descendant who is in the process of distributing his proof currently. (F-517)

His property is currently owned by a descendant who had no idea she was purchasing her ancestor's land at the time. The rock garden photo included with Henry's information is a part of Henry's property and was kindly submitted by Tracy Tomaselli of Guilford, CT. (F:PHO)

According to information from the "Mamie Doud Eisenhower birth place Foundation, North Carolina.," the Doud's who came from Guilford, England in 1639 are the direct ancestral line of President Eisenhower's wife, Mamie Geneva Doud. (F-618)

Henry married Elizabeth WOLCOTT on 18 Oct 1626 in Canterbury, Co.Kent, ENG. Elizabeth was born in 1613 in Of Surrey, Kent, ENG; died in Oct 1684 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 9.  Elizabeth WOLCOTT was born in 1613 in Of Surrey, Kent, ENG; died in Oct 1684 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA.

    Notes:

Elizabeth's published birth date in many second hand sources in 1613. This would make her almost 97 years old at her death. Only CD-100 gives her death date as 1683, and this seems much more likely. She is often listed as Elizabeth Woolet. However, a descendant from England wrote me to give me their 1626 marriage date and she spelled her name Wolcott. This marriage date seems quite early as it had been calculated to be before 1639, and because they had daughter Sarah in 1660 --- rather unusual timing. The children were identical to the ones I've previously found except for an additional Rachael. I would still like to get records to verify the information on this family.(F-616)

    Children:
    1. Thomas DOUDE was born before 1639 in , , , England; died on 7 Feb 1713 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA.
    2. Jacob DOUDE was born about 1640; died before 1653.
    3. Mary DOUDE was born in 1648 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA; died on 11 May 1693 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA.
    4. 4. John DOUD was born on 24 May 1650 in Guilford (Now Madison), New Haven, CT; died in Feb 1712 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA.
    5. Jacob DOUDE was born on 16 Feb 1653; died in 1703.
    6. Sarah DOUDE was born on 16 Aug 1660 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA; and died.
    7. Elizabeth DOUDE died about 9 Aug 1669 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA.
    8. Jeremiah DOUDE died est 15 Aug 1668 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA; was buried on 16 Aug 1668 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA.
    9. Rebecca DOUDE died on 10 Oct 1703.
    10. Rachael DOUDE

  3. 10.  Deacon George BARTLET was born est 1627 in , , , England (son of Unknown BARTLETT); died on 2 Aug 1669 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA; was buried on 3 Aug 1669 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA.

    Notes:

George Bartlett was one of the earliest settlers of Guilford. He was the brother of John Bartlett of Windsor, CT according to "Blushing Glory, Hide Pultova's Day". George and a Daniel Bartlet were early settlers of Guildford, making it highly likely that Daniel was a father or brother of George's. According to Gary Alan Bartlett, he immigrated about 1639, probably underage, as 21 year olds and above signed their names to a Plantation Covenant on which he was not listed. He was a part of Rev. Whitfield's settlement (primarily from county Kent, Sussex and Surrey, England) who sought religious freedom in an isolated setting. By 1640, England was embroiled in civil war that virtually cut off further immigration for a period of several years. (F-579)

Multiple sources give Robert and Mary Warren Bartlett who lived in Plymouth, MA as his parents. This is unlikely for the following reasons. 1) Robert married in 1634 to Mary Warren, a descendant of the Mayflower. Even if our George is a descendant of Robert Bartlett, he is not a descendant of Mary Warren (and the Mayflower lineage) as his birth estimated from several of his life's events suggest he was born before 1630. 2) George is not listed as their child in Plymouth, MA records. (AND) 3) Robert and Mary Warren Bartlett did not have a son named John or Daniel - likely brothers of George.

At this point in time, the parentage of George is not known. From the naming patterns of his children, my guess would be that his father was John Bartlett and his mother's name was Mary or Hannah... as these names were the oldest children's names that were not accounted for my Mary Bartlett's side of the family. George became a prominent citizen and had a home in the center of town on the southwest corner of the town green. His home would have been near what was the Park Hotel in Guilford, CT when an 1897 history of Menunkatuck was written. In 1986, the Monroe Building housing Douden's Drug Store occupied it's space.

He is first listed in Guilford, CT records on the 14 of August 1645 when he is witnessed the court proceedings of the first court record of the "Guilford Plantation". His first few years in Guilford, he likely spent under the care of another family. It was known that there were several young men under the age of 21 brought with the original settlement in the care of other families. George is listed in the 1650 list of Planters for Guilford, CT. It indicates that he was accepted as a freeman on May 22, 1648. According to Gary Alan Bartlett, the Freeman status indicated that he had completed "rigorous requirements for church membership, including public testimony relating the particulars of ones conversion experience to fundamentalist Christian belief, and knowledge of Scripture and that he had achieved the age of at least 21. (F-509, 526)

George was listed with the rank of Sergeant when New Haven colony was required to send 133 men on an expedition against the Dutch in 1654. Seventeen of these were from Guilford. By July 6, 1665 George was elected Lieutenant of the Guard. (F-579) In 1661, William Leete was chosen as chief magistrate and George Bartlet was chosen, probably as an assistant, in place of Thomas Jordan. From 1662 to 1665, he was the second person to hold the office as town clerk. He was the second Deacon to be elected in the First Church of Guilford, this probably occurring in June of 1665. He was elected as a member of the general assembly for New Haven for the whole year of 1663 and for the summer session of 1664. In 1665, he was elected to represent Guilford at the General Assembly of CT. During his tenure in this position from 1663 to 1665, he was also appointed "Deputy of the court with regards to [The Articles of Confederation for the Jurisdiction of New Haven]" which was their communities fundament agreement. He was also lieutenant of the trainband (local militia). He lived in Branford, Connecticut at one point in his life. A man of education and a prominent early Guilford resident, he died back in Guilford in Aug. of 1669. (F-497, 498, 509)

Deacon married Mary CRUTTENDON on 14 Sep 1650 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA. Mary (daughter of Abraham CRUTTENDEN and Elizabeth USBORNE) was born before 29 Apr 1632 in Hawkhurst, Kent, ENG; was christened on 29 Apr 1632 in St. Laurence Parish, Hawkhurst, Kent, ENG; died on 11 Sep 1669 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 11.  Mary CRUTTENDONMary CRUTTENDON was born before 29 Apr 1632 in Hawkhurst, Kent, ENG; was christened on 29 Apr 1632 in St. Laurence Parish, Hawkhurst, Kent, ENG (daughter of Abraham CRUTTENDEN and Elizabeth USBORNE); died on 11 Sep 1669 in Guilford Twp., New Haven, CT, USA.

    Notes:

Her name is also spelled Crittendon in some of the IGI records. There is controversy as to who Mary's mother was. Several sources list a Mary Hinkson as the mother of her and her siblings. If her baptismal date is correctly applied to this Mary Cruttendon, then her mother's name was Elizabeth instead. (F-509)
