  1. 1.  Ida Jane HARBIda Jane HARB was born on 15 Feb 1860 in Van Wert, Van Wert, Ohio, USA (daughter of Marquis Lafayette HARB, * and Arabelle C. MAST); died on 4 Sep 1926 in Hamilton, Butler, OH, USA; was buried on 6 Sep 1926 in West Milton, Miami, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Much can be learned about Ida Jane Harb Coate in her obituary. It verifies her parents and states she went to live in West Milton, Ohio in 1876 to stay with her mother's sister, Mrs. M.J. Pickering. "Here she became a member of the First Christian Church and was a teacher in the West Milton Public schools." After her marriage in 1878 she joined his church, The Friends Church of West Milton. After they moved to Piqua she moved her letter to the Grace M.E. church where she was a faithful member for 25 years. "Her cheerfulness and her sweet patience have been a source of inspiration to all who have had the privilege of coming in contact with her. Forgetful of self, ever mindful of her family and those about her, a loving and faithful wife, a wonderful mother, her going leaves a void that can never be filled."

My files also include a letter written in her own hand from Memphis, Tenn. dated Jan. 10 1920. She wrote to Mamie & All (Meaning her children) back in Piqua, Ohio. She was apparently helping "Margie" to get regain her health. (C-DOC)

A third document, is a letter in Ida's handwriting dated just two months before her death, June 18, 1926. She was writing to her daughter Grace. She had gone to live in Hamilton in 1926 or so. (C-54) She said her health was improving, that she felt really good when she was lying down or sitting, but could not walk without being weak headed. Her heart was still too weak. Even so, her letter had grace and a beautiful turn of phrase clear to the end. (C-365)

Ida married Warren C. COATE, * on 30 Jan 1879 in , Miami, OH, USA. Warren (son of John Haskett COATE, * and Jane COPPOCK) was born on 20 Aug 1855 in Ludlow Falls, Miami, OH, USA; died on 27 Sep 1929 in Memorial Hospital, Piqua, Miami, OH, USA; was buried on 30 Sep 1929 in Riverside Cemetery, West Milton, Miami, OH, USA. 1. 2.  Marquis Lafayette HARB, *Marquis Lafayette HARB, * was born on 27 Mar 1835 in West Milton, Miami, OH, USA (son of William HARB, * and Rhoda MARTIN, *); died on 18 Jun 1918 in West Milton, Miami, OH, USA; was buried on 21 Jun 1918 in Riverside Cemetery, West Milton, Miami, OH, USA.

    Notes:

My father, Albert Edward Coate, remembers his great grandfather, Marcus Lafayette as a tall man. He often tells the story that he knew his ancestor named Marcus who was probably named after someone who respected and knew the original Marquis de Lafayette who helped found our nation. (C-43) He is living with his mother, Rhoda Coate, who was recently widowed and wife, Mary J. and daughters, Ida J. and Lena in the 1870 census in Union Twp. Miami Co., OH. His son Franklin was not listed in this household. I theorize that his son Franklin died before 1870 as he does not appear in any census record after his birth about 1862. Marcus was a clerk in a Dry Goods store in this census. He was living with his daughter, Lena and son-in-law, Amos Coffman in Preble Co., Ohio by the year 1900. He was a mail carrier in that year. (C-97)

Marquis married Arabelle C. MAST on 15 May 1859 in , Miami, OH, USA. Arabelle (daughter of Absalom MAST and Mary JOHN) was born on 23 Dec 1836 in West Milton, Union Twp., Miami, OH, USA; died on 27 Feb 1865 in West Milton, Miami, OH, USA; was buried in Riverside Cemetery, West Milton, Miami, OH, USA. 2. 3.  Arabelle C. MASTArabelle C. MAST was born on 23 Dec 1836 in West Milton, Union Twp., Miami, OH, USA (daughter of Absalom MAST and Mary JOHN); died on 27 Feb 1865 in West Milton, Miami, OH, USA; was buried in Riverside Cemetery, West Milton, Miami, OH, USA.
    Children:
    1. 1. Ida Jane HARB was born on 15 Feb 1860 in Van Wert, Van Wert, Ohio, USA; died on 4 Sep 1926 in Hamilton, Butler, OH, USA; was buried on 6 Sep 1926 in West Milton, Miami, OH, USA.
    2. Franklin F. HARB was born on 29 Oct 1862 in West Milton, Miami, OH, USA; died before 4 Sep 1926.

Generation: 3

  1. 4.  William HARB, *William HARB, * was born on 20 Mar 1798 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; was christened on 20 May 1798 in Oley Hill, District Twp., Berks, PA, USA (son of Peter HARP, * and Elizabeth HILLEGAS); died on 1 Mar 1867 in West Milton, Miami, OH, USA; was buried about 2 Mar 1867 in Riverside Cemetery, West Milton, Miami, OH, USA.

    Notes:

William's birth date varies depending upon the source. His cemetery stone said he died on Mar. 1, 1867 and was age 70 years, 11 months and 2 days. This suggests his birth date was a bit earlier than found in other sources giving him a 1798 birth date. He is buried in the same row with his family. William Harp learned his trade, tailoring, in Philadelphia. He went west and settled in Dayton, Ohio from 1814-1823. He is listed as living in Union Twp., Miami Co., Ohio in 1835. In 1833 he had moved to West Milton, Union Twp. and remained there until his death. In the 1860 census record his property and goods are listed as being worth a little over $4000.00. His daughter and son-in-law Ann and John Secrist lived with he and his wife. (C-79) He was born in Pennsylvania in his son's 1900 census records. (C-32) In the Oct. 1850 census for Miami Co., Ohio, Union Twp., he is listed at age 52, a merchant, b. in Pennsylvania, whose property was worth $300.00 at the time. His wife Rhoda was age 48, a female, b. in Kentucky. The box is checked that they were both married within that year. That doesn't match with other family information we've found. If true, it would mean that Rhoda was not the mother of William's children. Son Jackson Harb was age 25, b. in Ohio and a merchant. Son Lafayette was age 16, b. in Ohio and a clerk by trade. He had attended school that year. Calvin was age 15, with the rest of his data matching his brother, Lafayettes. Daughter, Eliza was 12, Charles was age 5, born Ohio. Note that many of the children were called by their middle names. Up to 3 of his children were missing from this 1850 census. William's wife, Rhoda Harb, lived 4 houses away from Johnson P. Mast, another family member, in the 1880, Union Twp., Miami Co., Ohio census. She was 77 at the time, born in Kentucky, her father was born in New Jersey and her mother in Kentucky. The census taker marked that she could not write. She was living with Anna E. Secrist, age 41, her daughter, who was also a widow. (C-385) William's son, William B. Harb was a dry goods merchant in Willshire, Van Wert Co., Ohio and had 7 children with Caroline Harper, his wife. (C-387)

William married Rhoda MARTIN, * on 12 Dec 1822 in Warren, Tennessee, USA. Rhoda (daughter of William MARTIN, * and Margaret HORNBUCKLE, (1820 census, 1 age 26-44, 1830 census - age 40-49)) was born on 31 Mar 1802 in , , Kentucky, USA; died on 27 Mar 1887 in West Milton, Miami, OH, USA; was buried about 23 Mar 1887 in Riverside Cemetery, West Milton, Miami, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 5.  Rhoda MARTIN, *Rhoda MARTIN, * was born on 31 Mar 1802 in , , Kentucky, USA (daughter of William MARTIN, * and Margaret HORNBUCKLE, (1820 census, 1 age 26-44, 1830 census - age 40-49)); died on 27 Mar 1887 in West Milton, Miami, OH, USA; was buried about 23 Mar 1887 in Riverside Cemetery, West Milton, Miami, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Rhoda is in the 1880 Union Twp., Miami Co., Ohio census records. According to her cemetery stone in West Milton, Ohio, she was born in 1801 instead with no month or year given. (C-PHO, 1025)

Here is a transcription of her marriage to William Harb.

  3. 6.  Absalom MASTAbsalom MAST was born in Nov 1796 in , Randolph, NC, USA (son of David MAST and Nancy WORRELL); died on 15 Dec 1877 in West Milton, Miami, OH, USA; was buried in West Branch Quaker Burial Grounds, Union Twp., Miami, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Absolam's named in spelled in a variety of ways in various first hand records, Absolom, Absalom or Absolam. Absolam Mast's families birth dates come from his bible. He was born in Randolph Co., NC at the Hury Court House according to Judy Ireton in the articles in the Englewood Independent Magazine. He moved with his family from North Carolina to Ohio when he was about five or six. He was one of the most prominent citizens in the county according to "The Mast Family History". He was a farmer by trade.

He lived in Randolph Twp., Montgomery Co. census records from 1830 to 1850. He built a lovely home still standing and well cared for in 2004 on State Route 48 on the corner of Philipsburg Rd in Randolph Twp., Montgomery Co., Ohio. This home is within a quarter mile of his father's home, also restored and in lovely condition in 2004 on section 3 of Randolph Twp. Absalom's home was highly likely to be built on his father's property. Known as "Captain Mast" he headed the Militia known as a Light Horse Co. He loved horses and was a fine horseman. He is listed living with Labin/Sabin? (age 63) and Rebecca Jenks (age 60) in the 1860 census at age 62 and lived in Milton Twp. (now the town of West Milton), Miami Co., Ohio. Their appears to be no relationship to them as they were both born in Rhode Island. He was born in North Carolina, was a farmer and had property worth $14,000 in that census. (C-79,756, 1025, 2537)

At least two of his children were highly valued citizens from the following undated newspaper clipping. "Accident Fatal to Aged Woman, Mrs. Jane Pickering, 94, Dies at West Milton,..Feb. 1. Mrs. Jane Pickering died yesterday at the advanced age of 94 years. About two months ago, the decedent fell from her chair and broke her hip. This accident coupled with the infirmities of age was the immediate cause of her death. She was the widow of Albert Pickering, a successful business man, who dies in 1891, and a sister of the the late Asher Mast. Probably no other residents of West Milton were held in higher esteem than Mr. and Mrs. Pickering who had always resided here and were prominent members of the social and business life of the town. There were no children in the home but a niece, Mrs. Ida Coate, was reared in their home as well as other relatives who loved and revered her as a mother. Not withstanding the age of the decedent, she retained an active and keen interest in all current events. Funeral services will be held from the residence, Thursday morning at 11 o'clock. Interment will be made in Riverside." (C-372)

Absalom married Mary JOHN on 11 Sep 1817 in , Montgomery, OH, USA. Mary (daughter of David Davis JOHN, * and Elanor POWELL) was born on 5 Mar 1799 in Little Cove, Franklin, Pennsylvania, USA; died on 23 Aug 1846 in Union Twp., Montgomery, OH; was buried in West Branch Quaker Burial Grounds, Union Twp., Miami, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  4. 7.  Mary JOHNMary JOHN was born on 5 Mar 1799 in Little Cove, Franklin, Pennsylvania, USA (daughter of David Davis JOHN, * and Elanor POWELL); died on 23 Aug 1846 in Union Twp., Montgomery, OH; was buried in West Branch Quaker Burial Grounds, Union Twp., Miami, OH, USA.

    Notes:

The ancestry of our Mary John was unknown until the publication of the Chancery Court Records for Montgomery Co., Ohio In two different land cases, she is listed as the daughter of David John and wife of Absalom Mast along with the siblings I now have listed for her. It should be noted that there was another Mary John in Montgomery Co. that had been connected to this family instead in places like Brien's "Miami Valley Genealogies, Vol. II", but the Chancery Court records are as clear as day on this. It's this Mary married to Absalom Mast who is the d. of David John and Eleanor Powell. (C-2318) Mary's birth date is listed as Mar 5, 1797 in her husband's bible, her cemetery stone and in a published book "The Mast Family History" (Mar 3, 1797). She is listed as age 16 in the guardianship papers after her father's death in 1815 with her older brother, Bowen being listed at age 18. This would calculate his birth date at 1797 and hers at 1799. She is definitely the sibling born after Bowen (b. 1797) and before Samuel (b. 1801) in all of the court records on this family. I suspect that the earlier dates of birth, given when they were children are more correct. It should be noted that in a transcribed Bible record belonging to Gr.Gr. Aunt Jane Pickering, she was listed as a Mary Johns with an s on the end of the name.

    Children:

Generation: 4

  1. 8.  Peter HARP, *Peter HARP, * was born on 18 Aug 1770 in East District, Berks, PA, USA; was christened on 21 Oct 1770 in Oley Hill Church, District Twp., Berks, PA, USA (son of Jacob H. HERB and Maria Catharina HAUCK); died on 20 Dec 1842 in Dublin Twp., Mercer, OH, USA; was buried about 23 Dec 1842 in Old Frysinger Cemetery, Rockford, Mercer, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Peter's birth date and christening are in discrepancy. He could have been born in 1767 or 1770. He was christened on Oct. 21 in 1767 or 1770. His question of parentage is discussed later. The 1767 date comes from his gravestone. The 1770 dates come from Church records at Oley Hill, District Twp., Berks Co., Pennsylvania. Peter and his family came to Montgomery Co., Ohio from Berks Co., Pennsylvania supposedly between 1816-1818. All of his children claim to have been born in Pennsylvania on their census records. His youngest children seem to have been Jonas b. circa 1814 and Rheuben, b. abt. 1816. If Rheuben's birth date can be ascertained factually, then their migration to Ohio would be more certain. They first settled in Washington Twp., Montgomery Co., Ohio and lived there in the 1820 census. (C-1025) In 1827, they lived in Bethel Twp., Miami County. By the 1830 census, they had moved to Monroe Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. (C-134b) They sold land in this township in 1831 and moved North to Dublin Twp.., Mercer Co., near Rockford, Ohio where he was a farmer. It was land in the Godfrey Reserve. (C-135, 261, 357) He is listed in Mercer Co., in the 1840 census. Peter Harp's grave was still visible in 1982 in the Old Frysinger Cemetery, on the Shindeldecker (Shingledecker) farm at the end of Godfrey Reserve Rd., Northeast of Rockford, Ohio off Godfrey Reserve Rd., Mercer Co., Ohio. When it was visited by Betty R. Snyder of Foster City, California, it was flat on the ground and covered with weeds. It's dates were still readable. (C-181,387) One of Peter Harp's son, Amos, is likely to have been the Amos Harp that purchased land, section 30, in Noble Twp.., Auglaize Co., Ohio in 1849. (C-254) Peter Harp's wife is listed as Catherine and his mother as Maria Catherine in some sources. (C-181) Tom Harp of Sidney, Ohio believes his wife's name was Elizabeth Engel. As Tom has researched in Berks County on multiple occasions, I am inclined to believe this source most. There is also a possibility that he had a previous marriage which was recorded on 22 June 1796 to Elizabeth Hillegass. No proof exists that this is a marriage to our Peter Harb. (C-357) As to Peter's heritage, family tradition as presented in a Harb family reunion book dated July 31, 1909, hands the oral tradition down this way from the older members of the family: Great, great grandfather came in 71 or 72 from Germany and located in Berks Co., Pennsylvania. He cleared a few acres and went back to the Hesses after his family: a wife and 13 sons. (This written tradition believes they were Hessens. A great-great granddaughter of Peter calls them "High Dutch" from Pennsylvania.) They were hired as mercenary soldiers for King George III. However, when they got here, they deserted to the American cause. (C-43) General Washington made the great grandfather and his 6 oldest sons commissioned officers. All 14 men fought in the Revolution. (C-309, 539) After peace returned, these Harp's scattered moving to New Jersey, the lakes of Erie, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. Some of the younger generation came to Ohio in the 1820's from Pennsylvania and settled between Miamisburg and Germantown in Montgomery Co., in Miamisburg, Farmersville, Germantown and Dayton. Peter moved to Ohio between 1814-1816, 3 to 4 miles south of Dayton, then to Tippecanoe City and lastly to Mercer Co. All these Harp's came from the original immigrant who lived and died in Berks Co., Pennsylvania. (C-309) My father was told as a child by these older Harp family members that the Harp's were originally French Huguenots that went to Germany to live during troubled times and then later immigrated to America. The parents of Peter Harp, although listed here as Jacob Harp and Maria Catherine, are really still uncertain. The branch that is carried in family group sheets is the most likely line due to timing. It has not clearly meshed with the "traditional oral" history as passed down in our branch at this time. The biggest problem is that 13 sons can not be found in one family or in the American Revolution from one place. Pennsylvania, even as early as 1790, only has one Harb family living in it. In the 1790 census there were 25 Harp or Harpe families living in the U.S. with an average family size of 4.3, with 108 total members. Besides the one family in Pennsylvania, six families lived in New York, six in Maryland, one in Virginia, ten in North Carolina and one in South Carolina. (C-314) Revolutionary War Records have revealed this pattern. The most Harp's in the war enlisted in Virginia: Abner, Arthur, Henry, Joseph, Mathew, Mills, Nehemiah, Samuel, and William (all being born in the 1740's). Several were from North Carolina: Two Josephs, Richard (b. 175?), Sgt. Mjr. Matthew, and William (b. 175?). Connecticut had two: Ahaz (b.175?) and Elias (b.174?). A William Harp signed the oath of allegiance to Maryland during the Revolution in Montgomery Co., Maryland and Michael Harps, in Frederick Co., MD. (C-316) A Peter Harp, Abraham, John Harp and Henry (b.1735, PA) Harp served in the third Ulster Co., N.Y. Militia, under Colonel Levi Pawling in the Revolutionary War. Lastly, a John Harp (b.175?) is in the Delaware War Records. (C-310, 315-318, 714, 2458) There are other Harp's that might eventually connect to our Peter instead. A Peter E. Herb and Peter Herb came to America in 1749 from Rotterdam. A Johannes Herb came to America from Rotterdam in 1734. An Abraham Harp immigrated to Pennsylvania in 1765 (C-313). A Petrus Harp (who married Antje De Pue in 1749) and Henry Harp, from Rochester, N.Y., served in the Indian War of 1757. A John Harp was living in Philadelphia in 1746. An Abraham Harp (1816-?) who lived in Farmersville, Montgomery Co., Ohio was the son of Jacob & Elizabeth Bowman Harp and grandson of Frederick Harp of Berks Co., Pennsylvania. Virginia Harp's probably got their start from two immigrants in the second half of the 1600's named Richard and Henry. (C-313) Most of this information is from miscellaneous records from Lyndon Harp, 9110 Carrari Ct., Alta Loma, Calif. 91701 (C-306), THE BOSTON TRANSCRIPT, Nov. 24, 1919, #7370. (C-310) and Beers' "History of Montgomery Co., Ohio", p.342-343. (C-311) Also see (C-394 & 395) for additional information.

Peter married Elizabeth HILLEGAS on 22 Jun 1795 in New Hanover Lutheran Church, Montgomery, PA, USA. Elizabeth (daughter of Michael HILLEGAS, * and Catherina GERI) was born on 1 Nov 1773 in Upper Saucon, Lehigh, Pennsylvania, USA; died in 1826 in Washington, Montgomery County, Ohio, USA. Notes:

In most sources Peter's wife's name is guessed to be Maria Catherine. Since his mother's name is likely to be this same name, I suspect Elizabeth is more likely to be an accurate find. (C-715)

  3. 10.  William MARTIN, *William MARTIN, * was born about 1773 in Virginia, USA (son of Benjamin MARTIN, Jr * and Sarah BAKER, *); died after 1840 in of Wayne, Wayne, OH, USA.

    Notes:

William was found by DNA thrulines matching to other descendants of Benjamin and Sarah Baker Martin. He was the only one of their sons that could account for our Rhoda Martin's birth. After much research, I was able to find him in Wayne Co., OH by 1820. His daughter, Rhoda, proved via autosomal DNA, got her marriage license with William Harb in Wayne Co., Ohio. Rhoda Martin and William Harb took a letter from the clerk of Wayne Co., Ohio to Montgomery Co., Ohio to verify this when they married in Montgomery Co., Ohio.William's 3 oldest children were already out of the house and likely working elsewhere by the 1820 census. Henry Harland Martin, the oldest son, appears to have stayed behind in Kentucky and married there. William had so many children, he probably had 3 wives instead of the listed 2. That would indicate that Margaret had died before 1854, likely in Ohio.

William married Margaret HORNBUCKLE, (1820 census, 1 age 26-44, 1830 census - age 40-49) on 20 Sep 1799 in Jessamine County, Kentucky. Margaret (daughter of William Lucullus HORNBUCKLE, * and Sarah Jane HARDIN) was born in Jan 1770? (1820 census says age 26-44) in Fairfax, VA; died in 1854 in Calloway, Missouri. 5. 12.  David MASTDavid MAST was born in 1761 in Randolph County, North Carolina (son of John MAST, Sr. and Barbara Catherine HARMON); died in Aug 1836 in Union, Montgomery, OH, USA; was buried in Aug 1836 in West Branch Quaker Burial Grounds, Union Twp., Miami, OH, USA.

    Notes:

David was according to some 2nd hand sources born in Lancaster Co, PA and others in Wautuga Co., North Carolina. He moved with his family to NC where he was reared. David Mast is erroneously listed as being a soldier in the Revolutionary War with his father, both having supposedly fought at Charleston. However, when the records of the Siege of Charleston are checked, the name is spelled Mash and does not refer to him. He was known by the name of Captain Mast because he was one of two leaders, the other being David Hoover, who brought 64 families from North Carolina to the Stillwater area of Ohio in 1801/2. He built five cabins in 1802 according to a website by Judith Baker on the internet. (C-2570) One of them was still lived in in 1918 and in 2002 it still existed in Butler Twp., Miami Co., Ohio at 2151 Kershner Road. It's logs were covered by clapboard by 1914.

David is the Capt. Mast listed as living in what is now the Poke Grove, Randolph Twp. area of Montgomery Co., Ohio in 1806. Originally, the 64 families settled on lands on a 4 mile stretch along the Stillwater River. It encompassed lands in what was then Butler Twp., Clay Township and most of them in Union Twp., Miami Co., Ohio However, boundary changes in 1825 placed David's land in Randolph Twp., Montgomery Co., Ohio instead. His cabin was the first to be notched in the Stillwater Woods with many others following for the large party of families they brought to Ohio. The beautiful large two story home he built afterwards has been restored by Cinda Lightner Kratzner and is located just outside of the town of Union in Randolph Co., OH on State Route 48. He was taxed in 1804, 1810 and 1816 in Montgomery Co., Ohio. He was in the deed records of West Milton, Miami Co., Ohio in 1836 dealing with Lot 50. (C-1025)

Absalom, one of his son's, apparently used the same title as displayed in a letter quoted below. W.H. Beers in THE HISTORY OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY, BOOK III, (1882) on pages 54-56, give a very interesting account of David Mast's migration to Ohio with his family. The account is quoted from a letter written by son, Capt. Absalom Mast. "On the 10th day of Sept. (1802) ... my father, with four of his sisters and their husbands, bid adieu to old North Carolina, in company with one or two more families. They resided in Randolph County, (NC), of the Hewary River. They were all in low circumstances; had money enough to make their entries, and to buy some provisions during the winter. They halted for winter quarters at what is now called Ridgeville, eight miles north of Lebanon; rented a log cabin of Luther and Calvin Ball . . . Our Carolina tramps, or families, left Ridgeville vicinity (just north of Lebanon, OH) on the 4th day of March, 1802. They proceeded to the Stillwater woods, (arriving on 20 Mar.1802) where they had previously made their selections and on my father's purchase the first house or cabin was raised or notched." An interview with Mary Hoover of the same Montgomery Co., Randolph Twp. area, Ohio adds further interesting detail. "They had to cut a road north, through the wilderness, as they moved on their entries of land, which were purchased in 1798. . . David Mast settled on the northwest quarter of section 3." Nearby neighbors included Daniel Hoover, Daniel Hoover, Jr., and David Hoover. "Indians were numerous then but never molested the settlers of this township, although as settlers arrived and rumors of Indian depredations were being committed, there were block-houses built and the neighbors were collected in them at night for mutual protection against the Indians, but every morning the settlers would disperse to their respective clearings." Capt. Mast has several letters quoted on these pages of Beers book. It is most interesting to look up. Items in ( ) are quoted from other sources: Mrs. McIntosh and "Beside the Stillwater" articles published in "The Independent". (C-270g)

Another accounting of this same story comes from his grandson, Wesley J. Mast, in a letter he wrote at age 85 on Sep. 3, 1910 to Mr. C. Z. Mast. "David Mast, his two brothers, John and Jacob, seven sisters and their husbands came here in the early part of March 1802. They had left their homes in North Carolina in 1801 and had spent the winter in Ridgeville, Ohio north of Lebanon, Ohio. The sisters were Nancy, Elizabeth, Hannah, Mary Mollie, Catherine, Susannah. Their husbands were James Curtis who married Nancy, Daniel Hoover who married Hannah. John Waggoner who married Mollie. Henry Fouts who married Susannah. Leonard Eller who married Elizabeth and David Hoover who married Mary. Andrew Sheets who married Catherine." He lived in Montgomery Co., OH in the 1804 and 1810 tax lists. He was the grantor of land in West Wilton, Miami Co., OH in 1836, the year he died.

David married Nancy WORRELL in 1778 in Hillsborough D, Watauga, NC, USA. Nancy was born in Mar 1762 in , Randolph, NC, USA; died in 1816; was buried in West Branch Quaker Burial Grounds, Union Twp., Miami, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 13.  Nancy WORRELL was born in Mar 1762 in , Randolph, NC, USA; died in 1816; was buried in West Branch Quaker Burial Grounds, Union Twp., Miami, OH, USA.

    Notes:

The spelling of her name was Worrell in North Carolina as verified by her grand-nephew, Wesley J. Mast in a letter he wrote at age 85 to a relative. It is oft misspelled in Montgomery and Miami County records as Ware because there were other families in the area with the Ware spelling and the county clerks made the assumption that her surname was of the same spelling. Her parents aren't published in any source I've seen. In the 1790 census, the only Worrells in North Carolina live in Wayne or Randolph Counties. The only Worrell living in Randolph County at the time was a William Worrel whereas Wayne has about 8 Worrell families. I have a triangulation with a cousin who descends from Branham Worrell. He was born in 1810 so if he was her sibling, she was one of the oldest children in the family and he was one of the youngest. His father is supposedly Lewis and his birthplace is given as either of these counties in NC in public member trees. She might possibly be the "Nannie" Moss (Mast at it's current day spelling) who was the first person buried in West Branch Cemetery, Miami Co., Ohio Her stone was put up with letters on it that had been made by Frederick Yount, a relative. Notes:

Here is the obituary of Elanor Powell John transcribed by my Gr. Aunt Grace in her handwriting. Items in parenthesis were added from a similar obituary transcribed in Beers "History of Darke Co., OH". "Died June 22, 1848 at the age of 81 (4 months, and 12 days), (2nd child of 8) of Rev. On the spring of 1810, the whole family emigrated to Madison Twp., Montgomery Co., Ohio. On Nov 12 (10th), 1812 David John died leaving Eleanor in charge of a large family in a new country to encounter all the privations of such a situation as best she could. (but being a woman hale and industrious and with a confiding trust in God, she was enabled to bring up her family respectably and to see them settled in life. At the time of her death her children numbered thirteen, her grandchildren seventy-one, her great grandchildren thirty-seven, making her descendants 121.) She was a consistent member of the Wolf Creek Baptist Church where she maintained a very credible standing all through the years. She was as well and extensively known, loved and respected by both the rich and the poor as any other woman of her day and time.
