It is theory that Margaret is a sister of Thomas because she marries in 1660 in the region he first emigrated too. Supporting this theory is that her husband, Henry Booth was a witness to sale of the land by Moore Fauntleroy and his wife, with William Underwood being their attorney to Francis Slaughter in 1756. This and other records simply indicate this group knew each other well. UNDERWOOD, Margaret (I7884)

Jane as a young women is listed in Uwchlan MM records (Chester Co., PA) as going to the Abington Monthly meeting on Nov. 4, 1779. (C-2140) COATES, Jane (I5967)

Jeremiah Gaskins who lived two houses from likely brother John Gaskins in Ohio Twp., Clermont Co., OH in 1830 is likely to be this Gaskins. He was between age 20 and 30 in the 1830 census, and between 15 and 20 in age in the 1820 census. His possible mother-in-law is living with him, age 30-40. They have 2 sons age 5 to 10 in the household. He was age 47 born in VA in the 1850 Clermont Co., Ohio census. Note that his supposed sister, Jemima was also age 47, b. PA in the 1850 census. GASKINS, Jeremiah (I8038)

Jesse lived in Union Twp., Miami Co., Ohio in the 1820 census and in Newton Twp., Miami Co., Ohio in the 1830 census. (C-1025) We know that Jesse married Anna Cothran from two sources, Hinshaw's Quaker Encyclopedia which lists both their parents and one of their children's marriage records. He sells his land in Miami Co., Ohio in 1836 and shows up in Pulaski Co., IN in 1837. He is in Hinshaw, Union M.M., OH when he marries and then disappears from Hinshaw's Quaker records. According to Alan Coppock, he left SC in 1805, moved to Ohio and then finally moved to Indiana in 1837. He had 6 sons and 1 daughter, plus 1wife, Anna, when they moved to Indiana. He built the 1st log cabin in Pulaski, IN where his next son was born in 1838 named Olvier D. He was elected one of the first three County Commissioners of Pulaski County in 1841.

Anna died before him. He married 2 other women before he died in 1851. He has a standing tombstone in that county that verifies this.
COPPOCK, Jesse (I1802)

Jozsef Hruskovics likely emigrated to the U.S. on May 30, 1903 from the port of Bremen. He arrived on June 9, 1903. He was age 45, married, a laborer. He could read and write. He was from Zboro, Hungary. His destination was his son John Kve(xko) in Tuxedo, New York. It looks like he was in America previously in Jan. of 1898 also visiting Tuxedo, New York. Note that his age does not with his birthdate though if this is his record. HRUSKOVITS, Josephus (I10826)

Mark is on the Newberry twp., Miami Co., OH tax lists for 1835. He's located in the same place in the 1830 and 1840 census records also. In the 1830 census, he is living next door to a James Coats who is between the age of 50 and 60. I'm assuming this is his father in Newberry Twp, Miami Co, OH P46. In 1840, he is listed as Mark Couts, Newberry Twp., Miami Co., OH, p370. In 1850 his last name is spelled Coates and he is living in Mercer Co., Ohio. In 1850, his name is spelled Coates and he is living in Recovery Twp., Mercer Co., Ohio, p. 307. It is estimated that he and his family and brother John C.'s family moved to Honey Creek Twp., Iowa sbout 1854-55 where he is listed in the 1860 - 1880 census records. The 1880 census lists him as living in the town of Koszta in Honey Creek Twp. and lists his birthplace as South Carolina. In the 1900 census, his daughters Fannie and Susanna list their father born in Virginia and their mother in Pennsylvania. On May 08, 1860 for $25 he deeded Honey Creek Twp about 2 acres for the Koszta cemetery that he and his wife were later buried in. Guy Coates gives his birth date as May 27, 1806 and his possible twin, Mary's birth date as July 10, 1806. He is living in Iowa in the 1860 and 1880 census records where he lists his place of birth and that of his parents as in South Carolina.

COATS, Marmaduke "Mark" (I5993)

Marmaduke is the correct name of Joan's husband as a Johanna Podger, wife of Marmduke Podger, was buried in Curry Rivel Parish on 3 MAY 1672. There first-born son was also named Marmaduke. To top off the cake and prove this relationship, several of their children are listed under both parents names in the Curry Rivel Parish records which are as follows for the Podger surname transcribed by David Beare at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~davidbeare/CurryRivel/crall01.html: MARRIAGE 14 JUN 1642 Elizabetha Podger Ricus Jenerton

PODGER, Marmaduke (I11806)

Marmaduke was supposedly killed by Indians the same day as others in his family. He left no issue. Both these facts are so far, only found in a manuscript by a Mr. Mendenhall. (C-1430) I have seen no other supporting evidence for Mr. Mendenhall's statement on Marmaduke's death. COATE, Marmaduke (I1935)

Mary moved from Garland to Bradford as a child where she graduated from Bradford High School in 1940. She worked and retired from Corning Glass Works in 1981. She died at home, 54 Hawthorne Road on a Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2000 and was buried the following Saturday. (D-195) ENGLISH, Mary June (I300)

Maud and her first husband received lands at Campden from her mother's estate. They sold these lands about 1280. She married again without a license bef Apr 26, 1286 when she was fined for the same. (F-644) DE SOMERY, Maud (Matilda) (I8661)

Mom knew him as Uncle Chuck. He divorced his first wife. After they were divorced, his wife's home caught fire. The mother screamed when she jumped out the attic window. The daughter tried to help her mother and was caught in the fire in the attic instead where she died. SCHAFER, Charles M. (I1715)

Nancy Coats' father believed this Henry Jr. to be the son of Henry and Molly Pitts. He would be the son that would account for 1 son under age 16 in Henry's 1790 census record. He is in the following Davenport record for Newberry Co., South Carolina. "28Jul1803 - Probate Estate of Francis Davenport, Sr., late of Newberry County, Decd. Buyers at Public Sale Mary Davenport, James Davenport, William Davenport, Isaac Davenport, Stephen Waldrop, John Brooks, Henry Coate, Jr., Aaron Inman, John Fletcher, Samuel Beeks, Thomas Gary, Stephen Herndon, Rebecca Turner, Elisha Brooks, George Goggans, Thomas Gilbert, David Turner, and Ezekiel Waldrop. (Newberry County, SC, Estates, Box 5, Pkg. 13)" COATE, Henry Jr. (I6688)

Odomar (another spelling) enabled the Romans and Goths to establish a Peace Treaty. (C-1346) KING OF FRANKS, Odomir (I4450)

One source of unknown origin, gives Mary's burial date as 7/30/1719, before she married Mr. Sands. Her marriage that takes place in 1720 can be verified with a copy of the original Quaker marriage record at the Coats Family Archives provided by Charlotte Coats Siercks. She is listed as the daughter of James Coates, deceased (late of Philadelphia). The 1719 death date for her, therefore, has to be wrong. Witnesses at their marriage in the closest relatives column included John Sands (her brother-in-law?), Abraham Cowgill (her husband's 1st cousin through his mother's side), James Coate (her brother), Elizabeth Coate (a possible sister, sister-in-law or her cousin Elizabeth, d. of Samuel), Henry Coate (1st cousin through Uncle Samuel or her Uncle Henry), Sarah Laine (1st cousin through his mother's side), Caleb Rapier (husband of her 2nd cousin Mary Coate), Mary Rapier (2nd cousin, d. of Marmaduke and Ann Pole Coate), Henry Clothier (cousin as son of Sarah Jane Coate and James Clothier of Somersetshire Co., England), William Coate (cousin through Uncle Samuel) and Edmund Cowgill (1st cousin to her husband through his mother's side) in that order. This list gives several wonderful clues. Why aren't her siblings, John and Ann or her mother Mary in the list? John and Ann were deceased by that time. It's likely as well for her mother Mary. Are the James and Elizabeth Coate possibly her siblings that were also not named in her father, James's Coate's will? I theorize that James and Mary did probably have a son James and possibly another daughter Elizabeth. There isn't any other James that I've found that could account for the James who is high up on her witness list. Elizabeth might be this James's wife or she could be another sister of Mary. (C-1092, 2281E, 2572) COATE, Mary (I4155)

Phebe was quite a few years older than her husband according to their gravestones. (CL-501) WARD, Pheobe (I8044)

Phebe, listed as Phobe Massey, now Coppock, in a Mar 25, 1730 deed was listed as a relict of Thomas Massy, late of Marple, dec. and Henry Lewis of Haverford, yeoman. She and Henry Lewis sold a lot to Henry Camm that they had received from the will of Thomas Massey is March 1707/1708. In other words, she was the widow of Thomas Massy before she married Bartholomew. Her second husband, Bartholomew, was a witness to the deed. (C-2137) She died on 27d, 12m, 1749/50. MASSEY, Phebe Taylor (I1021)

President Hoover was born in a 7 by 13 foot, bare floor bedroom. The only other room, about the same size, was kitchen, parlor and dining room combined. He grew to the age of ten in the community of the West Branch of the Quakers' Red Cedar Meeting at nearby Springdale. It had been settled only a generation earlier by Quakers including Hoover's grandparents. By age 10, both of Hoover's parents had died and he was sent to live with relatives in Oregon. Of his childhood home, he said: "The most vivid and joyous recollections of my Iowa boyhood days are of patient angling in Iowa streams for the very occasional fish with willow pole and a properly spatupon worm." By the time he was President he had become a self-made millionaire businessman and public official. Seven months after he took office, the stock market crashed, and the rest of his presidency revolved around the depression. Many of the proposals he made to counteract the depression were thrown out by congress, only later to be accepted and successful policies under President Roosevelt. He was a reserved man with a quiet sense of humor. He enjoyed fishing, hiking, and reading biographies. His family of Quaker background. (C-113) In a newspaper article of the Sunday, New York Times, dated Oct. 24, 1964, it describes our country's preparations and mourning for the death of the 31st President of the U.S., Herbert Hoover. He was to be buried the next day at the 28 acre home that is the site of his library, his pine clapboard cottage home and his father's blacksmith shop. The Republican Presidential nominee, Barry Goldwater, was expected to attend the funeral, a turnout of 50 Persons of state including President Taft's two sons, as well as a complete turnout of the townspeople who have special memories of Herbert Hoover. (C-271) HOOVER, Herbert Clark (I473)

Prisilla Turner was supposedly related to and perhaps a sister of the (John?) Turner (and James Coate, son of Big John) that was in an incident that ended in the death of a Mr. Cox. Mr. Cox was possibly a Quaker as some members of the Bush River Monthly Meeting held that name. Mr. Turner was placed in the stocks for a day, whilst James fled the area, never to be heard of again in South Carolina. (C-1842) She died after 1820 when she and her husband and 2 Gaskins (daughter and son-in-law?) sue her son-in-law Henry and their daughter, Henry's wife, for some debt involved in the estate disbursement of Benjamin's father, William. (E) A summary of this record follows as forwarded by Charlotte Coats."LDS Film # 24219 FiledJune 30, 1819 Box 45, No. 11Priscilla Long, John Gaskins, his wife Decree - Bill of DiscoveryJudge Henry DeSaussureSarah Gaskins, and Benjamin F. Long Partition, Distribution & ReliefVsHenry Coate, Polly Coate his wife and William SpraginsWilliam Turner of Saluda made out his Will on February 1, 1774. The Will wasproved in Charleston October 25, 1776. Among other clauses in the Will, $250and land were bequeathed to a daughter Priscilla who later married BenjaminLong Sr. The children of Priscilla Long were Henry (Deceased), Elizabethdeceased (formerly wife of Benjamin Coate), Polly wife of Benjamin Coate,Sarah the wife of John Gaskins and Polly wife of Benjamin F. Long. BenjaminLong Sr. died 1817 intestate survived by wife Priscilla and children Pollywife of Henry Coate, Sarah wife of John Gaskins and Benjamin F. Long Jr. Inhis lifetime, On February 18, 1806 Benjamin Long Sr. conveyed to Henry Coate24 acres of the land given to his wife by her father through the persuasionof her husband. However, she never relinquished her right of inheritance. OnMarch 15, 1808 the remainder of the land belonging to Priscilla Long wasconveyed by Benjamin Long Sr. to William Coate. At that time Priscilla Longrelinquished her inheritance but did not join in the execution of the deed, nor did she sign away her dower. The question remained as to who had legalrights to the land. Also, on December 6 1791 Elizabeth Turner gave her grandson, William HenryLong, a 9-year-old slave named Frank. The slave was delivered to the father,Benjamin Long, who had benefit of the slave until he died. William HenryLong died intestate 1800 and survived by a father and siblings Elizabethdeceased wife of Henry Coate and survived by one daughter, Polly the presentwife of Henry Coate, Sarah the wife of John Gaskins and Benjamin F. Long.John Gaskins administrated the estate. The original papers recording thegift of Elizabeth Turner were recorded in Newberry Court and later lost ormislaid or in the possession of Henry Coate. After the death of WilliamHenry Long, Henry Coate took possession of the slave and maintained him forthree years and later sold him to William Spraggins. The yearly hire of theslave was worth $100/year. Elizabeth Turner made her Will July 19 1811 withcertain bequests to Priscilla Long wife of Major Benjamin Long and herchildren lawfully begotten of her body three slaves named Monday, his wifeSible and son Jacob; to her son Edward Turner she left slaves named Princeand Sarah; to her daughters Molly Edwards, Elizabeth Stephens, Deborah Cookand Priscilla Long share and share alike. In 1813 Elizabeth Turner died withHenry Coate and Benjamin Long as her executors. When Benjamin Long died he was insolvent. The only way Priscilla couldpreserve the ownership of her slaves after the death of her husband was torelinquish them to her children. The slaves had increased with three morechildren Monday, Charles and Salla. The Court was petitioned to determinewhat land and slaves were to be distributed among all the distributees namedand for relief for the administrators. The case and decree were written on33 pages and the decree alone was 2 TURNER, Priscilla (I5829)

Robert was listed as the unborn child when his father wrote his will in Mar of 1683. WELSH, Robert (I3220)

Sarah is listed as Sallie in the 1850, 1860, and 1870 Tipton Co., IN census and as Sarah in the 1880 Hamilton Co., IN census. In a One World Tree record her name is given as Sally Ann Cooper instead. COOPER, Sarah Elizabeth (I10835)

She and her husband lived in Claiborne Co., TN, Monroe and Montgomery Co.,IN and Mercer Co., Ill. COATES, Margaret (I5954)

She and her sister Ann were born in the jurisdiction of the Kingsbury Episcopi M.M, the Southern Divison of the Somerset Quarterly Meeting in Somerset, England. She died in the same Monthly Meeting region in co. Somerset, England according to the Somerset Quarterly M.M. records also. COATE, Hannah (I4117)

She died in 1764 according to Judge Duvall, shortly after she and her son, Samuel, deeded property to her son-in-law, Edward Crow on Nov. 21, 1764. DUVALL, Sarah (I10522)

She died of Tuberculosis like her brother Levi. She is not in the 1850 census records as living with her family. COPPOC, Maria (I5073)

She is buried the same day as her likely son indicating an illness, accident or birth event took them at the same time. HEWLETT, Ruth (I13471)

She is listed as the first wife of Thomas Mallory in a book on the history of Cheshire. (E) UNKNOWN, Jane (I8702)

She is listed at the age of 63 on her cemetery records forwarded by Osborn Cresson. (E) HEELE\HALE\HALL, Mary (I8303)

She is listed in the same 1830 transcribed Chancery records with her siblings as Anna. In the Miami Valley Index 1830 deed, it lists her as Cynthia Ann, same name her sister Mary John gives to one of her daughters. In the 1848 Chancery records it lists her as Ann. (C-2313) JOHN, Cynthia Ann (I8464)

She is related to Texas' famous Sam Houston. HOUSTON, Lady Elizabeth Anne "Annie" (I9192)

She likely married a Mr. Lowe. She was the mother of Margaret E. Lowe, b. abt 1862 in Hoxton, Middlesex Co., ENG. Margaret, age 8, was living with her grandparents, John and Isabell Tonkin in the 1871 census, but was back home living with her mother when her family was in the census. Her husband did not live with the family in 1871 and is likely deceased. She is listed with the occupation of "mangling". TONKIN, Margaret Eliza (I10816)

She was a twin. Her brother died at birth and she 2 months later. SIMS, Melissa Ann (I11579)

She was King Henry VIII's mistress while he was married to his first wife, Catherine of Aragon. When she became pregnant, King Henry broke from the Roman Catholic Church to divorce Catherine and marry Anne. Of course, she was the mother of Elizabeth (future queen of England), instead of the mother of the son King Henry wanted. This and her previous indescretions at the mistress of Thomas Dereham, and Henry Mannock, her piano teacher caused her to be the first wife of Henry VIII to be beheaded. BOLEYN, Anne (I11004)

She was probably born in Ekin, Hamilton Co, IN. Her obituary says she was born in Howard Co., IN. We know that her father had moved to Howard Co., IN previous to 1849 but we are not sure if he had moved there by 1841 when she was born for this fact in the obiturary to be true. She was well known for her love of flower gardening. She was a faithful member of the East Union Christian Church. COATS, Esther "Hettie" (I10673)

She was single and living with her mother in 1860. According to a descendant, she was married to a Thomas Fee. She might also be the Rachel C.S. Gaskins married to James Pillow on April 22, 1868 in Gallia Co., Ohio marriage records. GASKINS, Rachel (I9457)

She was still single and living at home with her mother in 1860. GASKINS, Nancy E. (I9454)

She's only listed as Daughter Hotchkiss in the New Haven Vital Records at www.ancestry.com and elsewhere. HOTCHKISS, Daughter (I803)

Sir Henry of Weston, is listed in MAGNA CHARTA SURITIES as "sub Edge, co. Gloucester, and Leigh, co. Worcester. (C-1368) DE PEMBRUGGE, Sir Henry "Fulk" (I4574)

The 1861 census says she was born in Dudley, Worcester, England and the 1881 census says she was born in Netherton, Worcester, England instead. UNKNOWN, Elizabeth (I11397)

The Bible that is quoted as the source for this Daniel and Esther Troth Coats family is her bible as quoted in the front "Esther Coate, 1825" and is likely in her excellent penmenship. However, the copywrite on the bible is 1830, so it's likely that the front inscription was put in later and had the date slightly wrong. TROTH, Esther (I2554)

The bible that originally belonged to Sarah Milles's family was passed down to this Sarah Mills when she married Daniel Coate. I say this because at the beginning of the last section of her bible which is a collection of psalms put into meter (or song), it states "Sarah Moor her Book God give her grace ther into Look for whan the Belles". On the side of this page is also handwritten, "Sarah Moor Whiton may 27 1740". From this I am assuming that Sarah Milles' mother was named Sarah Moor until she married a Whiton and then married a Milles before she had Sarah Milles in 1745. A second theory is that her grandmother was named Sarah Moor before she married a Whiton, and she gave her bible to Sarah Milles when she married Daniel Coate.

In an earlier spot that is bookmarked in the bible, a likely sister of Sarah's is written "In the year of our Lord 1742 10 month 3 day then was boarnd Rosana Milles (and further down), William Wilson" In the page before the New Testament starts it states "I the year of our Lord 1745 9 month 20 day then was bornd Sarah Milles." Earlier in the book in front of the beginning of the Old Testament the following information is given about her "Sarah Caote wfie of Dal Coate was Born the 20th of November in the year of our Lord 1745". This dating pattern suggests that Sarah Milles parents were Quakers when she was born as her original birth record in the bible lists the date as 9/20/1745 which would have been the Quaker format in that time period for a November birth date. In the end flaps of the book there is definitely writing, but it doesn't make sense as essential words have faded over the years.

Here is what is readable in 2004 when the bible is almost 400 years old, on the front inside cover is states "Sarah Milles in the Year of our Lord....Sarah Coate Daniel Coate, and on the back inside flap it states "Ard(h) Ca(yre) his book 1766, Job 22, 19th Varse," on side of back page it states "Joshua" "Joshua" "Joshua", upside down from that it says Joseph." The bible's earliest date that it was hand written in was 1678. The following scribblings which look like someone learning to write his name are on the page after the title page for the New Testament. They read "William Hill (Hanr) Ha(url) Anno 1678 William Andand (A ) (A ) O W JJJJJ William JJJJJJJJJ II." In the page before the concordance of the bible in hand writing it says "Ambros hands and Ambros R was Ambros hand" (at least that is sure what it looks like.) From: DorothyWiland@aol.com: This is the will of Sarah Mills Coate wife of Daniel Coate.

The Newbold family believed that this was Esther Willson whom was previously married to Henry Coate. Their oral history was published in a series, "The State of New Jersey", c. 1910, states he married Susanah Scholey and had all of his children by this wife. Susanah died before 1757. Michael at some point in his life became a Quaker. It then states that Michael Newbould next married Esther, d. of Samuel and Esther Overton Wilson, and widow of Henry Coates. He was the wealthiest man in this area at the time of his will in which he names his wife as Esther (surname unknown). Many Coate books and publications believe this same Henry is the father who moves from New Jersey to North Carolina in Quaker records with his sons John, James and Marmaduke so I naturally want to find the source of their information. The introduction to this series states that it is a collection of genealogical narratives from family members living in 1910 along with documents when they have been available. Errors could be present. Though we have not found the marriage record for Esther Coate to Michael Newbold in New Jersey, we can simply assume that it was a common law marriage at minimum. We do now know from autosomnal and Y-DNA evidence that Esther Wilson and Henry Coate were the parents of Marmaduke Coate so it's highly likely that "The State of New Jersey" series is correct.

Various possible relatives of mine attended the marriage of Michael Newbould and Susanna Scholey: William Coate (Cousin), Rebecca (Sharp) Coate (Cousin-in-law), and John Pole (cousin).
