1551 He was a young boy when living in Vitry-en-Penthois when his father was killed by Theirry I whom he had revolted against. (C-1440) MUNDERIC (I16685)

1552 He was age 20 and 29 in the 1850 and 1860 Clarke Co., AL census records. His parents did not marry until 1831. (C-1599, 2095) Andrew J. Coate purchased 319.35 acres of land from the St. Stephans land office, Document Number: 11565A Total: 319.35 on March 01, 1859. He was in the Civil War with the following description up at www.ancestry.com: Company: H Unit: 32 Alabama Infantry. Rank - Induction: Private Rank - Discharge: Private Allegiance: Confederate Notes: Coate A. J. His wife, listed as S.F. applied for his pension after his death. COATE, Andrew Jackson (I14071)

1553 He was age 34, born Ohio as were his parents in the 1910 census for Sugar Creek, Wayne Co., Ohio. He had a son with the name of Lores R., age 0. His wife's name was Lovina (age 30). They had been married for 8 years. They also hadylvan, age 6, and Clyde, age 4 and daughter Cora, age 1 and 5/12. They were all born in Ohio. He was a farmer by trade. The census was taken on May 4, 1910. He was drafted into World War I at age 43 in 1918. HOFSTETTER, David J. * (I6276)

1554 He was age 82 in his burial record. He likely had a first wife as the marriage record I have for him indicates he did not marry until he was 31. He is currently theorized to be the son of Marmaduke and Elizabeth in his baptismal record on Apr. 4, 1738 in North Petherton, Somerset, England.

The Big Y test is currently predicting him to have Marmaduke Coate, b. abt. 1552, as his first MRCA with my line.

There is a 2nd John Coate b in 1738 who might be him instead. He is John Coate, baptised on Mar. 26, 1738 in Taunton, Somerset, England instead who is the son John and Ann Coate.

COATE, John (I10106)

1555 He was age 92 in his burial record, the oldest person I've seen in Somerset burial records. COATE, John (I6701)

1556 He was alive during the reign of Henry III. Henry was King from 1216-1272. Land at Billeson was given to his heirs in 1234, to me suggesting he might have died by then. His wife, Anne, "Relic of Robert" held about half a fee at Tiltond the year 1240 again indicating same. I've seen his death published as 1250, but that doesn't fit with these two patterns. DE DIGBY, Esquire Roberte (I8296)

1557 He was also called Clodion and was King of the Salian Franks. (F-515) KING OF FRANKS, Clodius V "The Long Haired" (I13870)

1558 He was also crowned King of the Romans in 1256. He was married three times. His first was to a commoner and their children weren't considered legitimate heirs. His son by his 2nd wife, Sanchia, named Edmund (his 2nd son named Edmund) wasidered the rightful heir. Richard was murdered the same year as his brother, Henry III, but several months before him. The 3 sons from his commoner wife feuded with step-brother Edmund from Richard's second marriage (Known at the Fued of the Four Brothers). The new king, Edward I, resolved the dispute by changing the legitimate Edmund (Sanchia's son) to Earl of Cornwell instead of Cornwall. The sons of Richard's commoner marriage, Edmund, Richard and Walter lost their right to inherit the Earldom from this ruling. Centuries later, Queen Victoria dissolved the Earldom of Corwell/Cornwall in 1872 by the only known survivor, Martin Nelson Conrwell who had emigrated to Chicago, Illinois. This was witnessed by his children, Galen and Emily Jane Cornwell. I assume that he lost his title because he and his children and grandchildren all lived in the United States.

The 1871 Chicago fire had left this family impoverished to boot. This branch dispersed after these events. The point of this is that Cornwells and Cornwalls do descend from King Henry II and often through King Richard, the Lionhearted. Both names were used in this last branch that held the Earldom from Chicago, Illinois. In a proper sense, their name should have been spelled Cornwell as that was the line of their inheritance. (C-330, 433, 469)
PLANTAGENET, Richard Earl Of Cornwall (I12473)

1559 He was also known as Edward Atheling the Exile or Edward "the Outlaw", Prince of England. (C-865, 870, F-520) Edward (I12744)

1560 He was also known as Robert Richard Puleston. RICHARD PULESTON, Robert (I12219)

1561 He was also known as Saint Arnoul de Metz. He was mayor of the Palace and the tutor of Dagobert, Bishop of Metz. (C-1346, 1440) As to his ancestry, current thought is similar to Weis's "Ancestral Roots of Certain American Colonist gives it as follows: His father was Bodegeisel II who married Oda , a Suevian. Bodegeisel II was the son of St. Gondolfus and nephew of Bodegeisel II. St. Gondolfus was the son of Munderic (who was young in 509), Munderic was the son of Cleric, King of Cologne, murdered in 509 by agents of Clovis I. Childeric was the son of Sigebert the Lame, King of Cologne, murdered in 509 by his son at the order of Clovis I, King of the Salic Franks. Sigebert was the son of Childebert, King of Cologne who was the son of Clovis the Riparian, Frankish King of Cologne and was living in 420. Clovis, the Pirarian was related to Clovis I. (C-1440)

Older sources give his parentage as Arnoul /Bishop of Metz/ and Oda. This is currently not in favor as his lineage because it disagrees with primary sources at the time that state he was of Frankish descent as well as other discrepancies. The original source for his father being Bishop Arnoul is suspected to have been created by interests of Charlemagne's time trying to tie his ancestry into a Merovingian/Roman combination. (C-1454, 1496)
DE METZ, St. Arnolph (I12707)

1562 He was also known as Sir John Arundel. (Wikipedia) FITZALAN, Sir John * (I15649)

1563 He was also known as Sir Thomas Fitz Robert. His title was Esquire of Ellenhall, Co. Stafford, England. His daughter, Alice was his heir. (C-1368) NOEL, Thomas (I14054)

1564 He was also known as the Baron of Audley. (C-1358) TOUCHET, Sir John Lord Audley (I12833)

1565 He was also known as the King of the Salian Franks. (F-515) KING OF FRANKS, Childeric I (I12748)

1566 He was also the Duke of Brittany. EARL OF RICHMOND, John (I12723)

1567 He was also the Duke of Contsburgh or Coatsburgh. (C-330) EARL OF CAMBRIDGE, Richard (I12752)

1568 He was an architect for the elite. COATE, Roland (I2770)

1569 He was apparently in World War I as his birthdate comes from his draft registration card for that war. He registered in Cincinatti, Ohio. He was a pall bearer for my grandfather, Albert P. Coate's funeral in 1941. WILSON, Corey L. (I11628)

1570 He was baptized with the name Georgium (in latin) and went by the name of Joe. After Joe's father's death, the children were sent to an orphanage while Mary went to work at a boarding house. Joe was adopted for a while by a family whot he was German. When they discovered he wasn't, they neglected him and he ran back to the orphanage at St. Marys. As an adult, he worked as a laborer and carpenter. He was living in Hamlin, McKean Co., PA in the 1930 census, married and with 4 children. He was a fireman for the brickworks and living next to his stepbrother, Tony Cesario and cousin, John Perilla. He listed his parents birthplace as Czechoslovakia. He lived in Kushequa, Pennsylvania when his son George Joseph was honored in 1951 by becoming President of his Chical Engineering group in college. Joe retired as a employee of Kaul Clay Products. (D-45, 164) His obituary gives some incrongruos dates with those believed to be accurate by his son George. It gives his birth date as Oct. 22, 1899 in Dubois, PA, the son of George and Mary Wolfe Dudick. It says he married Grizelda James on Jan. 12, 1933. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church. The information was provided by Joes's youngest daughter, and George Joseph, Jr. clearly disagrees with the place of birth as provided by his sister.

His birth record, entered by a doctor that made many errors in submitting this families births, stated that Joseph Dudick was born Nov. 5, 1899 at Hill St. Extention, Johnsonburg, PA. His baptismal record, has a birth date of Oct. 24 with his baptism on Oct. 28, 1899. I'm taking this one as the accurate one because it was extremely close to the event and because of the other multiple errors in the birth records on this family. (D-164, 184, 191) As for his death, he was visiting his son, George, at Painted Post, NY when he suffered a heart attack and died. (D-191d)
DUDICK, George Joseph (I11711)

1571 He was born 6/23/1777 according to Hinshaw. Marmaduke and Mary Jane Coate appear to sell this James or the James who was the son of Big John, land in 1804 in Newberry County, Misc Rec Bk G p. 108. This James bought 160 acres in Range 5, Tp 6, Section 32, Northwest Quarter (now Newton Twp.) on July 19, 1806. He was living in that same township in the 1827 tax lists fairly close to his brothers John and William. (C-55)

In the 1830 Newton Twp., Miami Co., Ohio census, James is living within 2 houses of his brother John. He is between the age of 50-60. His wife is between 30-40. They have 2 sons between 5-10, 1 between 10-15, 1 between 15 & 20, 2 daughters under 5 years, and 1 between 10-15. (C-2560) I have not found the name of the daughter or young woman living with them that was born between 1815 and 1820.
COATE, James (I11966)

1572 He was born and grew up at Yattenden Castle, 7 miles from where Mary Norris, said she was from in her 1611 marriage record in Holland. It's this Norris family that is most likely to be the ancestral line for Mary Norris of the Mayflower.

NORREYS, AMBASSADOR TO FRANCE, BARON NORRIS OF RYCOTE., Sir Henry (I10514)

1573 He was born between 1959 and 1961 depending upon the source studied. SHORTS, Jeffrey (I61)

1574 He was born in 1653 or 1654 as the original was difficult to read. COATE, Henry (I2418)

1575 He was born in a log cabin which still stood near Ludlow Falls, Miami Co., Ohio in the 1950s when the centennial history of the area was published. It might still be the log cabin standing there when I last visited in 2006. Joseph bought old Marmaduke's farm. He is in the 1840 Newton Twp., Miami Co., Ohio census with 3 sons under age 5, 1 son from age 5-10, 1 son from 15 to 20, and he was between 20 and 30 years of age. His wife was between 20 and 30 and they had no daughters listed. Later, he and his wife moved to Pleasant Hill where he owned a flour and saw mill. He had also learned the occupation of smithing at an early age from his step-father, Henry Coate. He used this skill early in his marriage to make sickles for a living before trying farming and then milling. He was also elected as the Justice of the Peace twice in his lifetime. (C-670, 1430, E) COPPOCK, Joseph Cothran (I14045)

1576 He was born in Northern Ireland. (C-1448) ROBINSON, George (I13714)

1577 He was born in the fall of 1707 and died at age six weeks. (C-620) COULSON, Samuel (I643)

1578 He was born near the Stillwater River, which runs through Covington, Ohio. John still lived in Miami Co., Ohio in 1843 when his son Eli was born. In 1854/55, he moved his family to Morengo, Iowa where he married his 2nd wife. He had noen by his second wife. After her death, he married again in 1858. During the American Civil War, he enlisted in the 28th Iowa Infantry, Company B at age 42 alongside one of his son, James. This regiment fought at Vicksburg, and Champion. COATE, John C. (I14726)

1579 He was born on Jan. 3 before the year of 1931. His family however, cannot be found in the 1920 or 1930 census under any phonetic spelling. He is in a U.S. Public Records index that gives his birth year as 1931 and his address at estime of 75 as 8363 Morley Rd City: Edinboro County: Erie State: Pennsylvania Zip Code: 16412 Phone Number: 814-756-5132. GIEWONT, Charles T. (I9694)

His descendants are spread from this same town to Corfu, Greece. He is the only sibling in his family known to have had children. (F-604, 608, 624) FORTE, Nathaniel (I10727)

1585 He was christened in the 1580's with the last digit possibly being a 3 or 5 or 8. He was the son of a J??? Coate which is why I've placed him here by time, place and partial father's name. He wasn't named in John's will. COTTE, John (I2699)

1586 He was Colonel Robert Overton whom later gained the title of Major General. He played a prominent role in the English Civil War. (E) What is wonderful about this is that he is a proven ancestor of mine through an autosomnal DNA cousih whom also descends from him through his son William. OVERTON, Major General Robert (I13748)

1596 He was Gentleman Justice of the Quorum and High Sheriff for Anne Arundel County. He arrived prior to 1668 when he was commission as a Justice of Anne Arundel Co., MD on May 4 of that year. He is listed with this title on June 4, 1674, Mar. 3, 1675-6, and Sept. 13, 1676. In 1677, he was appointed as High Sheriff for Anne Arundel Co., MD. This was the most powerful office at the time. His term lasted until Mar. 1678-1679 during the period of Indian uprisings known as the "Nanticoke War". In June of 1679, he was again appointed Justice of the Quorum where he was listed as Captain John Welsh. He bought 1000 acres in Anne Arundel Co., MD called Three Sisters in 1680.

His will is transcribed as follows from "The Maryland Calander of Wills": Mar 3, 1683. "To eld. son Sylvester and son John and hrs., plantation on South R., equally, at 21 yrs. of age. Here is his write up in Wikitree in Feb. of 2022.

"In the 1650s, when Lord Baltimore was looking for settlers for his proprietorship, the colony which became Maryland, he advertised his religious tolerance as one of the incentives to immigrants from any other country or New World settlement. As a result, the Annapolis area of Anne Arundel County was soon populated with Virginia Non-Conformists (the Lloyds, Owens, Bennetts and others), with Quakers such as the Galloways (Calloways), with Huguenots (the Duval family) and with Welshmen (Snowden, Davis, Griffith and Welsh). However, many of the Welshmen were not religious dissenters: they conformed to the doctrine of the Church of England and established St. Anne's and All Hallows Parishes in their settlement.

In the 1660s, John Welsh immigrated to this community, probably directly from Wales. By 1667, John Welsh (Welch) was serving the County as a Justice. He was called Major John Welsh. The earliest record of land owned by Major John is a survey dated June 1, 1669."

There is no record that he went first to Virginia. John Welsh is one of the earliest officials of Anne Arundel County government. In 1667, he served as a Justice, and again in 1676, at which time he was called Major John Welsh and was a member of the Quorum. In 1678-79, Major John Welsh was the Sherriff of Anne Arundel County, and his son, called Captain John, was a member of the Quorum. (J. D. Warfield, A. M., The Founders of Anne Arundel and Howard Counties, Maryland. Baltimore, 1973, pp. 37-40) The earliest record of land owned by John Welsh (Welch) is a survey dated June 1, 1669 for 65-acre parcel named “Preston’s Enlargement,” bounded by “Burrages End.” (Maryland Historical Magazine, “Maryland Rent Rolls for Baltimore and Anne Arundel Counties.” Baltimore, 1976, p. 129.)

John became Commissioner (1667) and later High Sheriff (1678, 1679) of Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

By 1681, Major John Welsh had more than one plantation. In that year, “at a plantation of Major Welsh’s” the Indians killed and wounded both Negroes and Englishmen, according to the old Anne Arundel County records (Warfield, p. 51).

Major John Welsh’s first wife was the widow of Honorable Roger Grosse, an early settler and large landholder of Anne Arundel County. Anne ______? Grosse died in 1675, and part of her inheritance devolved upon her surviving husband and executor of the estate, Major John Welsh. Later that year, he married Mary, a stepdaughter of Nicholas Wyatt. After John Welsh’s death, Mary Wyatt Welsh married James Ellis (Warfield, p. 92). Major John Welsh died in 1686, leaving the will enclosed with this account of the family....

John Welsh1 and Anne _____? Grosse Welsh had children:
1. Sylvester Welsh2, married Elinor _____? . Their children were:
- A. Sylvester, Jr.3
- B. Elinor3
-.C. Lucia3
2. John Welsh2, born 1672, died 1733, married (1) Thomasin Hopkins in 1700; married (2) Rachel Hammond. (See a list of their descendants in the continuation of this family history.)
3. Benjamin Welsh2, married Elizabeth Nicholson
It is not clear which wife gave birth to John Welsh’s1 four daughters:
4. Mary Welsh2, married Josias Toogood
5. Sarah Welsh2, married John Giles
6. Elizabeth Welsh2, married Daniel Richardson
7. Damaris Welsh2, married Thomas Stockett
John Welsh1 and Mary Wyatt Welsh had a son born after John’s1 death:

- B. Lewis Welsh3
- C. Robert Welsh3
- D. Jemima Welsh3; married _______? Edwards
- E. Elizabeth Welsh3; married ______? Tongue
- F. Grace Welsh3, married _______? Elliott
- G. Katherine Welsh3, married ______? Stewart
- H. John Welsh3
- I. Benjamin Welsh3"
WELSH, Major John (I5912)

1597 He was given a double breasted waist coat in his grandfather, John Wright's will. Joseph and family got a certificate to move to Little Miami MM, OH from Bush River MM, SC on May 30, 1807. (C-95) COOK, Joseph (I13143)

1598 He was given his father's plantation in William's will probated 1807. Isaac lived in Tennessee in 1818 when he sold 190 acres in Iredell Co., NC to Samuel Hayes. He is listed as the guardian of Jesse Tharp, grandson to his parents in hisr's 1816 administration in Iredell Co., North Carolina. (CL-317) THARPE, Issac (I318)

1599 He was given the age of 59 in his burial record estimating his birthdate at about 1727. This might be in error as that would make him only 11 when his son William was born. COATE, William (I6625)

1600 He was given the title, Earl of Winchester by King John in 1207. He was a Magna Charta Surety in 1215. To make sure that King John would honor the Magna Charta, the Barons of England elected 25 of their members to take complaints agaie King and his officials. If the King did not keep his promises, these Barons would lead a rebellion and take the King's possessions. Saire was one of these chosen 25. He went on the Crusades and died in the Holy Land in 1219 in either Acre or Dementia, Palenstine. His name was also spelled Saher. He is just as often listed as Saire IV and could be confused with a possible son, named Sahr. Authoritative sources need double checked. (C-1363, 1365) DE QUINCY, Saire First Earl Of Winchester (I12993)
