  In is often published that this John Joy was a Baptist and moved to Alloway Creek, Salem, NJ when Baptists moved to that area from Massachusetts. It is said that he died in Salem in 1624. However, DNA evidence from all Jays tracing backw Jersey, do not match descendants of this John Joy's ancestry which goes back through Thomas Joy of Higham, MA, so his supposed move to New Jersey is not supported by fact. There is a John Joy who purchased 100 acres of land from John Rutledge on May 27, 1732 in Baltimore Co, MD that might be this John. (C-2304) The Jay Family Association has nicknamed him "Cattlemark" John. Here are the records that likely apply to him on the Jay Family site. 1708, May John Jay of Salem Co. NJ attests two different deeds for Jacob Spicer 1708, June Cattlemark of John Jay recorded in Salem Co. NJ 1711, Apr John Jay involved in the estate of Charles Oakford and wife Margaret 1715, Jan John Jay [Jey] received payments from the estate of William Hall 1737, Jan John Jay's note listed in the inventory of Richard Hudson. It is assumed that this John is the father of William and a likely Joseph as well as other Jay's that have YDNA matches originating from Salem, Burlington and Cumberland, NJ.
