  He and his wife had 7 sons and 3 daughters, 5 of them being born when they lived in Virginia. Hugh (Jr.) witnessed the deed of Robert Ewing and his wife, Mary (Baker or Calhoun?) in 1755 in Augusta Co., Virginia on Jan. 24, 1755. Robert Ewing's land was in Roanoke and they had moved to Lunenburg before 1755 when they were in Augusta Co. for this land transaction. Likely relatives, James and Patrick also witnessed the deed transaction. Since relatives of the wife witnessed deeds whenever possible, I suspect Mary was the sister of James and Patrick and daughter of Hugh Calhoun. She is however, listed as a Baker in most sources. Hugh and family moved in 1757 to Long Canes, Abbeville, 96th District, SC with their Aunts, Uncles and cousins. He received 200 acres of land in 1760 on Long Canes Creek called Calhoun's Creek near Fort Boone. He received more land in 1768 next to his cousin, William Calhoun's land. They sold the first 200 acres in 1777 to a relative and they moved to Berkley Co., SC to be near his brother, John Calhoun. Their eldest son John remained there while they moved back to Calhoun's Mills.
