  He was likely the J. Conley who made wagons as his profession and lived in Limestone, Alabama in the 1850 and 1860 slave census records where his father lived. I do not believe he died in 1883 in Madison County, Alabama based upon this evidence. The John Conley in the 1850 slave census and the J. Conley in the 1560 slave census, were listed as "white" in another of the 1560 slave censuses. This can't refer to the white step-brother of James whom had moved to Texas before 1856 when he married there. It's highly likely it belongs to John J. Conley instead as they moved there at a similar time. However, the sketch of John in the family voting, shows him as a medium dark tone indicating otherwise if the artist had an accurate description of him. It is likely to be inaccurate at least for him, as he would have been voting in Limestone County instead in that time period. In other words, this is in question.
