• Notes

  This John is sometimes listed as the son of Gentleman John. No proof exists for this. John and his wife were having children before 1796 when they had son John. Their daughter, Rachel, was born first. They had 12 or 13 children total, the last born in 1818. (C-1320, 1630) In the 1800 census, John is possibly listed on page 69 of the Newberry Census. He and his wife were between the ages of 16 and 26. They had 2 sons under age 10 and 3 daughters in the same age range. The youngest they would likely be with 5 children is 21, giving them a birth date range of 1774-1779, with 1774 being the more likely.... or he could be the John Coats of Laurens Co., SC in 1800 with 1 male under 10 [possibly John Jr.?], and one male 26-45 [John himself?]; 4 females under 10 [Rachel, Rebecca, Susan, ?], a female 26-45 [wife-Susan?Brock?] and 1 female over 45[a mother or a mother-in-law?] as Jack Waddell theorizes. He is not in the 1820 Ohio census, and it appears that his son John is living as the head of household with siblings or hired workers and possibly his mother living with him: 1 male 16/26 [himself]; 1 male 10/16; 1 male 16/18; 1 female 10/16; 1 female 16/26; 1 female over 45; 4 in agr. He is in the 1830 census records again at age between 60-70, his wife is between 50-60. They have 2 sons living with them between 20-30 and 2 daughters aged 10-15, and 15-20. They are living next door to their son John, Jr. in Newberry Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. John, Sr. is missing from the 1835 quad census suggesting that he had died or had moved by that time. Every child from George on was born in Ohio. Those previous to him were born in SC according to their census records. Several of the children were listed as members of the Greenville Creek Christian Church in Miami Co. or Darke Co., Ohio. They included George, John, Patsy (Daughter-in-Law), and Lucinda. (C-1958) It is not known with certainty that his wife's name was Susan Brock.
