  • Notes
    • She was crowned Queen of England on the day of her marriage. Through her influence, it was said that her husband restored the decrees of King Alfred the Great and laid the foundation for the Magna Charta during King John's reign. At her death, she was "passionately lamented by all classes." (C-862) She was also known as Edith "Atheling". It was her birth name. She changed it to Matilda after she married. She was buried in Westminster Abbey next to her uncle, Edward the Confessor. (C-1795)
