Notes - Carter Dukes and his wife were born well before the civil war and were likely slaves for much of their lives. A slave owner in the Edgefield District of SC that had slaves of the ages of most of this family is accounted for by J C Smyley who apparently owned a large plantation there. According to the 1860 Slave Schedule for the US, he owned male slaves of the age of 55 and 45 (Carter if his age was not estimated correctly or if he lived elsewhere), a female, age 45 (Caty), a male, age 12 (George), a male, age 6, (Adam) and a male age 2 (Thomas). He was of the Saluda District of Edgefield County, SC in 1860.
In any case, if he is the son of Abraham, Araham's heirs received their father's bounty land grant after their father died in 1814. Because Abraham enlisted in 1812 and died in service in Illinois in 1814, his heirs would have recieved 160 acres in Illinois, Arkansas, Michigan or Missouri. His father's land was assigned in Arkansas. Since Carter still lived in South Carolina in 1870, I'm not sure if he ever moved to Arkansas.
