  • Notes
    • It is theory on my part that Capt. John and his son Gentleman John of the first English settlement at Jamestown, were the son and grandson of Addame Martyn of Greystoke, Cumberland, England. There are a dozen possible Johns that Captain John could be according to England, Births and Christenings. However, we do know that they were of the upper crust of the Jamestown passengers. We know this from John Jr.'s status of Gentleman in the listing of the first planters of Jamestown. There are only 2 family's of Martins that I have found that were landed gentry in England. One is accounted for by the Massachusetts John Martin in the Visitation of Devon. One is accounted for by the John Martyn in Burkes' Landed Gentry of Greystoke, Cumberland, England that would fit this line of John's born in Greystoke, Cumberland, England.
