  It is not known with certainty that James is a son of Joseph and Elsy Tharp. He is in the 1820 census for Gallia Co, OH where this family lived for several years before moving to Indiana. Dana Norton conjectures that he may be thd of Jane Tharpe found in Boone Co., IN from 1840-1860. She died in 1864 and listed the following children in her will: William Joseph, Sarah, Elcy, Elizabeth and Mahala. (CL-425, 432)
