  He is likely the James Coates that was granted a certificate to Haverford MM, from Kennett Monthly Meeting, Chester Co., PA in Quaker records, dated 10 mon, 13 da 1785. I say might, because several of his family members seemed to be parte Kennett Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends. (C-2153) He is likely to be the James Coats who married Rachel Jackson on Mar. 9, 1793 in Baltimore Co., Maryland according to the Marriage Register of Rev.Lewis Richards, pastor of first Baptist Church.
