1. | ![]() Notes: "Peter Lester, the founder of the family of that name in Pennsylvania and a pioneer of the Richland Settlement, came to Pennsylvania about 1682 with William Penn's group from Leichestershire, England. He was first given 1 square lot of land on Market St. by William Penn in Philadelphia. He sold this for 30 pounds. It probably was the 125 acres he purchased in England prior to coming to the colonies from William Penn. This is the smallest size lot that appears to have been sold by William Penn. (C-228e) He was a member of the Society of Friends and declared intentions of marriage at Chester Monthly Meeting with Mary Duncoff, 6 mo. 6, 1685. He was accompanied to this country by at a close relative, as the will of George Lester, probated at Philadelphia Dec. 14, 1695, mentions him as a kinsman and makes him executor." (C-247) A William Lester who dies in 1691 lists Peter as a cousin and George as a Kinsman. Peter married Mary DUNCALF after 6 Aug 1685 in , Chester, PA, USA. Mary (daughter of Thomas DUNCALF and Margaret TAYLOR) was born about 1664; died about 1739 in Richland, Bucks, PA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

3. | ![]() ![]() Notes: The Gwynedd Monthly Meeting named John overseer for the "Great Swamp" (the area they resided in) in 1725. He worked at this position with diligence for many years taking care of what became the Richland Meeting. He and John Ball are on a petition signed in 1730. He and Peter Lester (Jr.) have signatures on a petition filed in court on Sep 15, 1743 to request organization of Springfield Township. He died at age 82 leaving a will in Philadelphia dated Mar 2, 1764 written almost 7 years before his death. It named sons John, Peter, Joseph and deceased son Isaac's children and daughters Catherine Roberts and Priscilla Foulke. John married Catherine GRIFFITH in Jan 1715 in Gwynedd M.M., Richland, PA. Catherine (daughter of Howell GRIFFITH) died in 1731. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] Family/Spouse: Dorothy UNKNOWN. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

5. | ![]() ![]() Notes: He removed to Virginia or Maryland. (C-247) He or one of his brothers could possibly be the father of a Joshua Lester/Lister who was born in in 1730 and died in Caroline County, MD???. Joshua had a son named William, b. on Apr. 10, 1760 in Kent Co., MD who moved through Virginia to Guilford Co., NC, to Marlboro Co., SC, and who died in Barbour Co., Alabama. This William, son of Joshua, had 2 brothers. (C-1326) |

7. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Peter and Joyce did not have any children listed in "The Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks" by Clarence V. Roberts, c. 1925. However, a recent copy of the marriage record for Moses Coppock and Martha Lester found by Patti Sue McCrary states that Martha Lester is the d. of Peter Lester, yeoman (farmer), of Richland Twp., Bucks Co., Pennsylvania Since this is where Peter lived during his adulthood, it makes perfect sense that this is the Peter who is Martha's father by timing and place. His own father, Peter, would have been near 80, and probably not listed as a farmer -- even if he was still living at the time. Peter was deeded 200 acres of his father's land in Richland on May 15, 1721, in the area known as the great swamp. It is highly likely that his father was living with him for over a 20 year period since the elder Peter had deeded away all of his 600 acres to his son-in-laws and son a good twenty years before his death. Land records need checked for Peter Jr. as the "Early Friends Families of Upper Bucks" states that he sells this land at 2 different times - in 1724 and 1741. He had purchased 204 additional acres in 1739 on Cooks Creek near Durham, Springfield Twp., Pennsylvania. That land was sold in 1742 suggesting to me that he had possibly died at this time. Peter married Joyce UNKNOWN before Oct 1716. Joyce died after 1740. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

10. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Martha's surname is usually published as Lester but she was also stated to be a Scarr in some sources suggesting that she had a previous husband. The New Jersey Colonial Records dispell both. When she marries Moses in 1740, she is simply listed as Martha Lester with no indication of being a widow or having the name Scarr. Her husband's name is simply Moses Coppock and her father is listed as Peter Lester, yeoman. They were both listed as of Richland Twp., Bucks Co., PA in the NJ colonial marriage records found in the New Jersey Archives, Marriage Licenses, Set 2, Reel 8, p. 57 1/2 (C-683, 2220, 2298) From the above record we know that Martha is the daughter of Peter, but which Peter, Sr. or Jr.? They both lived in Richland Twp., Bucks Co., Pennsylvania. Martha's parents are invariably listed in second hand sources as Peter and Mary Lester with her birth date being given as 1704 or 1719 respectively. Let's attack this problem from Martha's age. Martha married Moses COPPOCK on 22 Sep 1740 in , , NJ, USA. Moses (son of Bartholomew COPPOCK, III and Rebecca MINSHALL, (Mendenhall)) was born on 2 May 1708 in Middle, Dauphin, Chester, PA; died before 1 Dec 1767 in Bush River, Newberry District, South Carolina Colony. 13. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Rebecca after she was married witnessed her sister, Marther Coppock Tomlinson's Quaker marriage in 1771. Rebecca is the Rebecka Evans living next to Gentleman John (John Sr.) Coates in the 1790 Newberry, SC index. She had 2 males above age 16, 1 male under age 16 and 4 females in her family. Her husband was obviously deceased as she was listed as the head of household. I know this to be her, because her husband, Robert Evan's land, adjoined Gentleman John's land in 1771. She is the only Rebeckah Evans listed in the 1790 census in that region. (C-1906) Rebecca married Robert EVANS in 1761. Robert was born about 1744; died on 4 Mar 1784 in , Newberry, SC, USA; was buried in Bush River Quaker Burial Ground, Newberry, SC. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

14. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Mary's birth date is the first detail in question about her. By all accounts she was born between the years of 1743 and 1748, with 1744 being the most often given date. The accounts typically revolve around her supposed age at the time of her capture by Indians and none are based on first hand records at the time. Mary's name is usually stated as Mary Jane Coppock. Quakers did not typically give their children middle names in this time period, but the name Mary Jane was actually considered one name together at the time. Sarah Ann was another popular combination at the time predating middle names. Tradition states Mary Jane Coppock was captured by the Indians as a child and was supposedly rescued and purchased back by her childhood friend, and future husband, Marmaduke Coate in 1763 or 1764. The following are a sampling of the accounts about Mary's capture in the records. Each of them has errors and conflicts when it comes to ages and dates, but the general tradition is the same. Note that multiple accounts state that her mother was killed in the raid, but this has been proven to be untrue. Mary married Marmaduke COATE about 1763 in , , NC. Marmaduke (son of Henry COATE, * and Esther WILLSON) was born on 13 Jun 1738 in Hopewell, Hunterdon, New Jersey, United States; died on 22 Sep 1822 in Ludlow Falls, Miami County, Ohio, United States of America; was buried about 28 Sep 1822 in Union Joint Cemetery, Ludlow Falls, Newton Twp., Miami, OH. 15. | ![]() ![]() Notes: He was supposedly killed by Indians at the same time as his father. (C-1304c,d) (C-2289) However, Bartholomew might account for one of the individuals living with his mother when she applied for 300 acres of land in Newberry/Berkeley Co., SC in 1767. If so, his death date is after 1767. Land was granted by the number of members in one's family. Martha received 300 acres, accounting for herself at 100 acres, plus 50 acres for each additional member or 4 more members. That would probably include children, Bartholomew, Phebe, Martha and James. If Bartholomew was killed with his father, then Phebe was likely married at a young age and still living at home with her husband. |
16. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Phebe probably accounts for one of the individuals living with her mother when Martha applied for 300 acres of land in Newberry/Berkeley Co., SC in Dec. 1767. If so, she is likely not yet married at the time. (C-2289) After she married Elis Pugh, they had the following children: Jesse (1774), Kitty (1776), Thomas (1778), Ebner (1780), James (1782), Azariah (1784), and Ellis (1786) in Bush River, Newberry Co., South Carolina. Though Phebe's death date has not been found, it is likely that she died before 1802 when an Ellis Pugh and his wife Rachel moved from Newberry to Miami Co., Ohio Phebe married Ellis PUGH in 1773 in , Newberry, SC. Ellis (son of Azariah PUGH and Hannah BEALS) was born on 21 Jan 1748; died in Mar 1836 in Near Waynesville, Warren, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
17. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Martha is sometimes listed as the older and sometimes younger sister of Mary Coppock. Both were supposedly captured by Indians. One account that seems to be closest to Quaker records, says Mary was 6 and Martha was 6 months at the time. Martha is said to have stayed with the Indians and be the wife of half breed Chief John Roose of the Cherokees. Martha married William TOMLINSON on 30 Dec 1771 in Bush River M.M., Newberry, SC, USA. William (son of Josiah TOMLINSON and Elizabeth WILSON) was born on 27 Mar 1749 in Timahoe, Kildare, IRL; died on 17 Mar 1813 in , Randolph, NC, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

Hannah (daughter of Azariah PUGH and Hannah BEAL) was born on 9 Mar 1762; died on 11 Apr 1820 in , Miami, OH, USA; was buried about 12 Apr 1820 in Mill Creek Cemetery, Miami, OH, USA.
