    Notes:

    His home was at "Wilson's Grove", which he inherited from his grandfather though his father. This was his home until 1737 when an act by Assemby occurred involving his inherited lands. He then sold this land on Oct. 17, 1737 to William Peele. He is listed as having many small children at the time. Only four of them have been discerned to date. He is likely the Captain Lewis Duvall listed in "Settlers of Maryland, 1731-1750." He purchased 100 acres of land named "Addition" and 50 more acres called "Pretty Land" on Jun 10, 1734, both in Anne Arundel Co., MD. He made additional purchases on Nov 3, 1737 of 50 acres called "Little Worth" in the same county.

    He ended up moving to Frederick Co., MD where he was the purchaser of the following lands: "Beginning" of 29 acres on Nov 27, 1752 in Frederick Co., MD, "Griffin's Chance" of 60 acres on Aug 11, 1753; 265 acres of "Griffin's Chance" in Frederick Co., on Dec 31 1754 and "That's All", 32 acres in Frederick Co. on Mar 11, 1756.

    In 1759, Lewis gave surety for Elizabeth Ridgeley of Anne Arundel Co. who was the executrix for the estate of William Ridgely. She was the mother-in-law to Lewis's son, Aquilla Duvall.

    He and possibly some of his sons are thought to have removed to Pennsylvania.

    Notes:

    Samuel moved away from the Duvall estates to Prince Georges Co., Maryland early in his adult life. He returned about 1729. He obtained 300 acres on Nov 6, 1731 called Duvall's Range in Anne Arundel Co., MD and he was bequeathed 272 acres on July 27, 1737 called Talbott's Adventure in the same county along with wife Elizabeth and coheir Lucy Ward, wife of Edward Ward from the women's father, Edward Talbott.

    He was married twice according to the book, "Mareen Duvall of Middleton Plantation", and his wives' names were both Elizabeth. There apparently was discord in his 2nd marriage. His will starts "My Will is that upon my Wife's restoring the Effects she clandestinely Carried off, she shall have and Enjoy the third of my estate". He signed his will on Dec. 2, 1752 as Samuel Deval of Monockezy, Miller.

    He is mentioned in the 1737 land records involving "Wilson's Grove". He was a witness to the will of John Nelson of Frederick Co. in 1750 and to William Griffith in 1757. It is assumed that he moved west after this point to Pennsylvania or West Virginia as no further records are available for him in Maryland. He never purchased or owned land in Maryland either.

    Notes:

    He and his parents moved from Anne Arundel Co., Maryland to what is now Montgomery Co., Maryland before 1748. He was a Private in Captain Thomas Sappington's Co. during the French and Indian Wars in that year. He and his wife, Elizabeth, were heirs in the estate of her father, William Ridgely in 1755 of Anne Arundel Co., MD. He purchased "Hartley's Lot" of 600 acres on Apr 2, 1755 and "No Matter What" of 387 acres on Jun 8, 1764, both in Frederick Co., MD. On May 14, 1760, he and his wife gave his mother-in-law a piece of property called "Resurvey on Hartley's Lott". He was a private in the Revolutionary War in the "Middle Battalion of Montgomery Co., MD. He died in 1783 leaving a will dated Sep. 29, 1783 that was proved on Nov. 3rd of that year. His will named brother, Lewis Duvall, Daughter, Rachel Musgrove, Sons, Levin, Zadock, Frederick, Aquilla, Eleanor, Elizabeth, William, Claudia, and Aquilla. His executor was his brother, Lewis. Witnesses were Henry Griffith, Jr., Ann PUrdis, and Ann Russell.

    Notes:

    Though he was born in Anne Arundel Co., MD, he grew up in Rock Creek Parish which at that time included Prince George and Frederick Co., Maryland. Parts of Frederick Co. became Montgomery Co., Maryland which could account for the fact that he raised his own children in Montgomery Co., Maryland. He took the Oath of Allegiance in 1778 in Montgomery Co., in front of Magistrate Edward Burgess to verify his patriotism in the Revolutionary War. In the first census of the United States for Frederick Co., Maryland (1790), there were 2 males over age 16, 4 under age 16, 5 females and 6 slaves in his household. (CL-697)

    He was sued by Stephen Musgrave. On Nov. 18, 1791, the court decided in Stephen Musgrave's favor and ordered that Lewis' property, "Richardson's Range" be sold at public auction. Thomas Cornelius Howard was the highest bidder. Howard received the land formally on Dec. 26, 1795.

    Richard Morgan and his wife, the niece of Lewis Duval, also sued him. The court again went in the favor of Richard. This time he had to sell "Richards Range, Bristol and Rogues Harbour" for the settlement. On June 16, 1798, Isaac Webster received the properties.

    In the 1800 census for Montgomery Co., Maryland, he is probably the Lewis Duvall with the following information, although a Lewis Duvall Jr. is also listed which looks like it could be him instead. If he is the Lewis Duvall, he and his wife are over age 45. They have one son under age 10, one son and daughter from age 16-26 and 3 slaves. If he's the Lewis, Jr., he and his wife were over age 45. They had a daughter from age 10-16, one daughter and 2 sons from age 16-26 and 7 slaves.

    He appears to sell to his son John on Jun 15, 1815 for $493.00, "Richardson's Range" and "Roque's Harbour". He called himself Lewis Duval, Sr. at the time. His wife, Ann, waived her dower rights.

    He died without leaving a will before Sept. 15, 1817 when his estate was probated. Son Philip was named administrator.
