Notes:

I will be using DNA to prove or disprove Elisabeth's surname as there are many reasons to believe it is incorrect.

Some lineages give Elizabeth's surname as Layton. There is no proof as yet for this. The surname might have come from a guess because William Jay had a son named Layton. An Indiana branch of the family believed her surname was Natherson. However, if it's correct that William's 2nd wife was Mary Cochran, Layton was not the son of Elizabeth and that further dispells the myth that Elizabeth's surname was Layton. (C-685, 949, 2109)

As for Natherson, that also is a misrepresentation according to the Jay Family Association: "Many family history enthusiasts reference the Natherson surname when making postings discussing the family of William Jay Jr. and his first wife Elizabeth. They state that Elizabeth's maiden surname was Natherson. There have even been rumors of a "Natherson Bible". After much research the Board of the Jay Family Association has concluded this is likely a dubious reference for the following reasons:1. The Natherson surname does not exist on any US census records prior to 1870. Those appearing in that census list Prussia as a family birth origin.2. The Natherson surname does not exist and is not present in any Orange, Frederick or Fairfax Co. VA records of any kind. This was the Jay family residence from roughly 1734-1751.3. The Natherson surname does not exist and is not present in any Orange, Caswell or Person Co. NC records of any kind. This was the Jay family residence from roughly 1751-1774.4. The Natherson surname does not exist or is not present in any Newberry, Edgefield or Abbeville SC records of any kind. This was the Jay family residence from roughly 1774-1818.5. The Natherson surname does not exist on any colonial records indexed on Ancestry.com.6. ALL other "allied" family surnames connected to the Jay family. Pugh, Wright, Elleman, Anderson, Coppock, Coate, Satterfield, Morrow, Reagin, Patty, Mills, etc proliferate the deed, court, marriage, probate, Quaker and other records in ALL of the above locations. There is an Anderson Family Bible in existence which has been transcribed and notarized. A transcription is in the possession of the Jay Family Association. Perhaps the Natherson surname was a reader's corruption of the Anderson or some other surname and the confusion began at that point. However, until visual documentary evidence of the "Natherson" surname is presented, the Jay Family Association does not accept it as connected to the Jay family and do not believe the Natherson surname existed in the US prior to 1860. Sarah is also listed as Elizabeth in some sources. Her father might be a Joseph Jay or a James Jay living somewhat near her husband, Nathan Wright in the 1790 Newberry Co., SC census. She married a Quaker, Nathan Wright, and for this was dismissed from her religion. (C-1959)

Listed 3rd in father's will, he was known as Tailor Billy. He purchased land from his father's estate for $200.00 in 1797. (C-168, 800) In 1790, there is a William Jay who had the following members: 1-1-1, 0-0 and lived in the 96th District, Edgefield Co., South Carolina.. (CL-974) This William Jay who was living in Edgefield Co., SC in the 1800 census had 4 males under 10, and 1 between 10 and 16 with himself listed in the fourth column (pr. between age 26 and 45). He first moved to Warren Co., Ohio.(C-818) From 1822-1842, he and his brother's family lived in the Center Meeting in Northern Wayne Co., Indiana and finally settled in Henry Co., Iowa. (C-839) He might be the David Jay who had 1 son between 10-16, 1 between 16-26, himself from 26-45, 3 daughters under 10, 1 daughter from 10-16, and a wife or daughter from age 16-26 in the 1800 Newberry Co., SC Census records. James was listed 5th in father's will. According to the Jay Family Index, James came to Clinton Co., Ohio in 1805. Quaker records however, indicate that he was still in the Bush River Monthly Meeting area of SC in 1809, where he and his family are listed in a visit from New Garden Monthly Meeting Members as James JAY and wife, Jemimah and children, Mills, Alexander, Mary, Rhoda, Layton, James, Ede (Edith), Dempsey, Isaac and Sarah.

He could easily be the James Jay listed as living in Newberry Co., SC in the 1800 Census with 4 sons under 10, himself from 26-45, 2 daughters under ten and his wife between 26-45. (C-922)

At any rate, he eventually settled on land belonging to his wife's uncle, George Arnold in Clinton Co., Ohio They moved to Center Meeting in Wayne Co., IN in 1822 and to Henry Co., Iowa in 1842. (C-800)

James married Jemima MILLS on 7 Apr 1791 in Bush River M.M., Newberry, SC, USA. Jemima (daughter of John MILLS) was born in 1768 in , Newberry, SC, USA; died in 1868 in , Henry, IA, USA; was buried in Salem, Henry County, Iowa, United States of America. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

She is listed sixth in her father's will. She might be the Betty Jay who witnessed the wedding of Sarah Cook and Zimri Gaunt in the 1785 Bush River Quaker records and was listed in the family column. However, I do not know of a kin relationship at this point in time between her and Sarah Cook.

Elizabeth married Thomas WRIGHT in 1785. Thomas (son of John C. WRIGHT, * and Rachel WELLS, Minister) was born on 8 Aug 1761 in Newberry, Newberry, South Carolina, United States; died on 30 Apr 1835 in , Randolph, IN, USA; was buried about 1 May 1835 in White River, Randolph, IN, USA. Notes:

Layton is listed as the child of Wm. Jr. and Elizabeth in Medlin's Quaker Records instead of the son of Mary. (C-265) He is listed 8th in his father's will. Layton, wife and family of six children were issued certificates of removal from Bush River and Cane Creek on 9/25/1802 to the Westland MM in Washington Co., Pennsylvania. Even though their destination was Ohio, that Pennsyvania MM was the closest one to file their certificates with at the time. (C-1297)

They came to Ohio from South Carolina by way of Tenn. and KY. They crossed the Ohio River at Cincinnati on a flat boat with the horses tied behind it. They leased land in Chester Twp., Clinton Co., Ohio to begin with and then moved to Miami Co., Ohio in 1809. (C-800) He and his family were supposedly the first Jay's to move to Ohio. His wife's family moved with them. Their land patent was signed by George Washington and was still in existence in 1951 in the possession of Cassius Milton Jay. However, his children are rumored to have disposed of all of his records after his death. (C-813)

He is said to have married a White after his first wife's death. In his will dated 1812, he names William Jay (son?) and Benjamin Coppock his executors. (C-864, 1950) Some accounts say he died of drowning, but one Jay researcher, R. Harry Jay, believes that his will made in proximity to his death indicates otherwise. There is also an account that he died of "Milk disease." (C-1079)

Charlotte was a twin. She was listed 7th in her father's will. (C-864) Her husband apparently played around on her for which she was said to have left him often. She might have been the Charlotte who married a Samuel Thompson in 1817 in Miami Co., Ohio. (C-1025, 1950)

Anne is listed as the daughter of William and Elizabeth Jay in Medlin's "Quakers of SC and Georgia." (C-265) She is listed 9th in her father's will. Anna was left to raise seven children when her husband John died. She brought them to Miami Co., Ohio before 1809. Anna Jay Coppock bound her son, Layton, apparently as an indentured servant or apprentice in 1826 to Henry Coate of Miami Co., Ohio. Deed Bk.5, p. 614. (C-955, E)

Her birth date and death dates are listed with 7 year differences, indicating to me that her birth date was calculated from her death date. One set of birth and death dates for her are Apr 25, 1765 in Newberry Co., SC and Apr 9, 1821 in Miami Co., Ohio Another set are May 5, 1772 and Apr 9, 1828 in Miami Co., Ohio. I do not know which is correct at this point, though the 1772 date more closely puts her into the 9th child position in her father's will. (C-2109)

Anna married John COPPOCK, Jr. on 7 Jan 1790 in Bush River M.M., Newberry, SC, USA. John (son of John COPPOCK and Abigail (Skillern) SCHELLENGER) was born on 20 Aug 1766 in , , MD, USA; died on 9 Apr 1828 in , Miami, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

She is listed 10th in her father's will. Deborah died three weeks after her father while giving birth to twins. Her birth date on Apr. 25, 1772 in her and her husband's family bible is in conflict with her sister Anna's birth date. We're not sure which is correct.

This Mary is often stated to be the Mary who is the d. of William Jay and Elizabeth Natherson. I've seen dates where their daughter, Mary is born on Jan. 4, 1777 or Jan. 4, 1767. If the later is correct, then it's still possible that she's the one married to William Coate. William and Elizabeth Natherson Jay do have a daughter named Mary as she is in her father's will. (C-949, 1698) Mary is alive in 1807 when she witnessed the sale of her husband's land to James Brooks in Newberry District, South Carolina. She was also received on certificate from the Bush River Monthly Meeting by the Miami M.M. in 1808. She isn't in the 1820 census with her husband, but she is supposedly in deed records in 1820 and 1822 when they sell off their land in Miami Co., Ohio. This does need checked for her signature, since the 1822 date occurred in July and she supposedly died in Mar of 1822.

Sarah's father was Thomas Wright who died in Randolph Co., IN in 1835 and was born in Newberry SC in the 1760's. He and his wife are verified as the parents of Sarah Wright in her marriage certificate to John Coats. She, however, is listed as being born in North Carolina in her son William's 1880 census record, but in South Carolina in several other of her children's 1880 census records.

She is often confused with a likely relative Sarah Wright who also married a John Coate/s and was the daughter of Nathan Wright and a Sarah Jay. John Coate/s is also confused because of this.

In the book by F.A. Batttey and Co., COUNTIES OF WHITE AND PULASKI (Indiana), Chicago 1883, there is an Isaac Coppock who purchases 160 acres of land in Salem Twp., Section 36 NW 1/4 on Nov. 30, 1838 who could be this Isaac. On page 538 it shows Jesse COPPOCK on March 18, 1839 recorded 160 acres of land in Salem Twp., Section 25 SW 1/4 who was a likely 1 cousin, once removed or his brother, Jesse. There are two Jesse's of similar age from SC at the time. It is not known for sure however, if either sons of John and Anna Jay Coppock named Jesse and Isaac lived in Indiana. It is known for a fact that Jesse Coppock, son of Joseph and Jane Wilson Coppock lived in this part of Indiana.

Elizabeth and her husband moved with her father William to Ohio in the Covington area. Heiss gives her birth date to be 1785. Don Coats estimates it at 1787. (C-1919)

Notes:

John was living in Covington, Ohio during the War of 1812 according to his obituary. He and his wife were born in South Carolina according to their 1850 census record. One grandson stated he was born in North Carolina and according to another he was born in South Carolina. Of course, this confusion could have been because the part of North Carolina he was born in later became South Carolina in 1788. After his childhood the obituary states that he went into "Teaming" as profession and drove from his parents home to Charleston, South Carolina. This supports him being raised by Big John, as Big John's sons, Wright and James were also into "Teaming".

He also has one of 2 supposed decendants that have been tested for their DNA who is related to 3 other possible Big John descendants via sons William and James. The list of John's children came from one of his grandsons, John R. Coats in a handwritten document in Winchester, VA. By Sep. 5, 1822, John and Sally are living in Randolph Co., Indiana when they sold their land in Miami Co., Ohio to Benjamin Lehman. (C-2568)

John is living in Randolph Co., Indiana in the 1850 census on pg. 63, White River Twp. He was age 63, b. South Carolina. His wife was age 60, b. South Carolina. Children still living with them included Lewis age 21, Andrew age 16 and Dempsey, age 6, all born in Indiana. Living next door to him is son, Joseph Coats, age 23, b. Indiana, married to Esther, age 27, b. Ohio with 2 daughters.
On page 79 of this same census, son William Coats is listed, age 33, b. Ohio married to a Mary (age unreadable). On page 62, son Thomas W. Coats, age 42, b. Ohio with wife Mary age 43 and children. Son Gabrael is on page 64 at age 26, b. Indiana.

There is a remarkable newspaper article on a family reunion of this couple and almost all of their descendants that was dated Jun 22, 1859 in Randolph Co., Indiana. John and Sally were at the head of the table and listed as ages 71 and 70 at the time. All of their present family was sitting in order of their age of birth around them and named in this article. There is also another lovely article on a family reunion that took place sometime in the 1880's after all but Mary "Polly" had passed from this original family. Mary was 74 at the time. There were 180 family members present. It stated that John was a farmer by night and a Justice of the Peace by day, a man of "iron constitution". He and Sally had raised 12 children and lost 2 others at a young age. They were pioneers in Randolph Co., Indiana and oft encountered wild beasts and Indians in their long lives.

John married Sarah "Sally" WRIGHT on 21 Oct 1807 in Miami, Ohio, USA. Sarah (daughter of Thomas WRIGHT and Elizabeth JAY) was born in in NC or SC; died after 1836 in Winchester, Randolph, Indiana, USA; was buried in Randolph County, Indiana, United States of America. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

They settled in Darke Co., Ohio after their marriage. In 1834, they moved out of that section of Ohio and then moved 3 years after that to Pleasant Mound Twp., Bond Co., Illinois.

Sometime after moving to Illinois, many of the children were dissatisfied with the conditions there and joined a cattle drive moving as far away as Wisconsin.

They all returned to their father's property in 1847 where their offspring were still living at the turn of the century. In the 1850 census for Bond, IL the 3 sons they still had living with them ages 24-17 were all born in Ohio. In the 1870 census, she is living with her son, Aaron. Her husband is likely deceased.

Joseph was born on 13 Jul 1785 in , Lancaster, PA, USA; died on 7 Sep 1856 in Pleasant Mound, Bond County, Illinois, United States of America; was buried in Greenville, Bond County, Illinois, United States of America. Joseph's place of birth is still in question. It's listed as NC in the 1850 census for Harison Twp., Hoaward Co., IN, or as Newberry or Charleston, SC depending upon the 2nd hand source. Joseph and father appear to be living next to each other in the 1820 census for Newberry Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. He and brother Williams were administrators for their father's estate. He and his brother, William moved to Marion Co., Indiana sometime in 1822. His sister, Hettie, was married in Marion Co., Indiana in Mar. of 1823 so she obviously moved with them also. He purchased 80 acres of land in Township 17, North range 4 East, Section 18, W1/2 SE 1/4. He is also listed with a purchase of 80 acres in Brookville District, Marion Co., IN on Aug. 7, 1823. Perhaps this is the same property and that it's just a different stage in the purchase process. He is apparently listed in the 1830 census for Marion Co., Indiana. In 1840, he is in the Hamilton Co., IN census records. Joseph is next listed "of Howard Co., IN" when he purchases 80 acres of land in the same county on Mar. 20, 1849. In the 1850 census for Howard Co., Indiana, Joseph is listed at age 58 and born in North Carolina. Joseph died while working in his fields according to his daughter, Hettie's obituary. Some say this was in Howard or Tipton Co., IN. According to several genealogies at ancestry.com, he died in Kansas instead. He is possibly buried in the Friends Cemetery in New London, Howard Co., IN or in East Union Cemetery in Hamilton Co., IN. The East Union Cemetery is just over the border from Tipton Co., IN where his wife is buried. I could not however, find his burial record in East Union Cemetery transcriptions. (C-1693)

Joseph married Elizabeth A. COPPOCK on 6 Nov 1816 in , Miami, OH, USA. Elizabeth (daughter of John COPPOCK and Mary Ann TEAGUE) was born about 16 May 1797 in , , SC, USA; died on 6 Apr 1864 in Ekin, Tipton, IN, USA; was buried in Archibald Small Cemetery, Jefferson Twp., Tipton, IN, USA. Williard Heiss says he was born in 1786 instead. Mary Helen Pemberton gives his birth date as 1796. He aparently moved with his brother Joseph to Miami Co., OH and then Marion Co., Indiana where he bought 80 acres of land in Brookville District on 1/6/1824. This is probably the same land whose purchase he began on Nov. 16, 1822, in Township 17, North Range 4, East - Washington, E 1/2 SW 1/4 Section 29 for 80 acres. This was about five weeks before his brother Joseph also purchased land. He or his brother are not listed of Miami Co., OH when they made the purchase suggesting they had moved with their families to Marion Co., IN and then found land to purchase. I am assuming that he is the same William Coats of correct age and birthplace for he and his wife living in Harrison, Howard Co., Indiana, USA in the 1850 census. If so, they would likely have had children between their marriage of 1817 and 1827 when son John was born.

William married Charlotte WRIGHT on 30 Oct 1817 in , Clinton, OH, USA. Charlotte (daughter of Thomas WRIGHT and Elizabeth JAY) was born on 6 Dec 1796 in , , SC, USA; died after 1860 in Of Palmyra, Warren Co., Iowa, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Mary was their 10th child according to Richard Morgan and she was born on July 10, 1806. I have, however, found this birth date also listed for the Mary who was the supposed twin sister of Mark Coate, son of James Coate and Mary West. (C-2081) Plus in an Ancestry World Tree submission by Don Coats, they give her birth date as 1798 instead and her marriage date as 1817 in Miami Co., Ohio. The marriage date of 1817 did take place in Miami Co., Ohio If she was born in 1806, she would have only been age 11. I therefore, assume that the 1798 birth date is more likely to be correct.

He and his 2nd wife "Polly" were in attendance at the family gathering of their parents in June of 1854. The sons and daughter's, their spouses and children totalled 18 persons with 2 missing who were living in Iowa.

If Charlotte had a daughter named Esther, she is highly likely to be alive in 1880, living with her son-in-law Riley Deihl and his wife, Esther in White River, Randolph Co., IN. She is listed as Charlotta Hiatt. The only disparaging fact is that her parents are listed as being born in Indiana. This could easily be because the information was given by a grandchild or greatgrandchild who simply didn't know. Everything else is a good match and I believe that this is Charlotte Coats.

Charlotte, her husband, theirs sons and daughters with spouses and children totalled 26 at the 1859 reunion in Randolph Co., IN. Two were absent and three were deceased at the time.
