1. | ![]() Notes: In C-611, William's birth place is listed as Southhampton, ENG. This is the port where many Quaker families embarked from to come to the new world. William came to the American colonies in 1683 with his brother Daniel. Daniel died and was buried at sea. William first appears in Chester Co., Pa records in 1692 when he took Guardianship of the children of his wife's first husband. (C-2251g) He was a taxpayer in Birmingham Twp., Chester Co., PA in 1693 and 1696. William was listed as a Constable of Birmingham on Mar. 12, 1694/5. He was a Baptist by religion and a farmer by trade. (C-2141) He and Thomas Moore were deeded 100 acres of land lying in Concord on that same day. He and Richard Buffington (the first settler in the area) jointly purchased 218 acres in Bradford, Chester Co., PA in 1696 and an adjoining 218 in 1701. They then each took 218 acres to themselves, with William taking the l701 purchase. This land was between Brandywine, below the forks, almost to Srode's Mill. He built a home on this property and died shortly after. William married Alice GLOVER about 1692 in , Chester, PA. Alice (daughter of George GLOVER and Alice LAMBOLL) was born in 1663 in Kings Cleare, Hampton, ENG; was christened on 10 Jun 1697 in Elkton, Cecil, MD, USA; died before 1729. 2. | ![]() ![]() Notes: William Vestall, Jr., was raised in Chester Co., Pennsylvania. His family were originally friends from the Newark Monthly Meeting in Pennsylvania. (C-836) According to Gilbert Cope in writing the will for Joseph Woodward of Goshen, he mentioned that William was married more than once. However, only one marriage has been found for him to date, that of Elizabeth Mercer. They originally settled on Brandywine Creek, four miles from West Chester. William was listed as living in Bradford Twp., Chester Co., PA in tax lists from 1715-1726. (C-2251g) His wife, Elizabeth Mercer, was a Quaker. William had apparently become a Quaker by the 2nd Month 5th day, 1729, when he requested a certificate of removal to North Carolina from the Center Meeting House. William married Elizabeth MERCER on 9 Sep 1716 in Westtown, Chester, PA, USA. Elizabeth (daughter of Thomas MERSER and Mary GREENAWAY) was born on 14 Jun 1692 in Banbury, Oxfordshire, England; died after 1751 in Cane Creek, Orange, NC, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

7. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Vickie Leimback said he was married to his cousin, Mary Vestal instead of the spouse I have listed. 8. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Mary Vestal and William Jay married about 1743 in Frederick Co., VA. She likely lost her membership in the Quaker church for marrying out of unity. On 10/5/1772, Mary Vestal Jay sent an acknowledgement of marriage out of meeting to the Hopewell Monthly Meeting. This was a few months before her husband's death. (Some researchers mistakenly claim this is because she married again.) (C-1338) It was accepted and Jesse Pugh was appointed to assist the women in preparing a certificate for her to remove to Bush River. (C-804) Mary married William JAY, * before 1743 in Virginia, Colonial America. William (son of John JAY) was born about 1711 in of Cumberland, NJ; was christened on 25 Jan 1713 in Bexwell, Norfolk, England; died on 4 Mar 1773 in Bush River, Newberry, South Carolina. 11. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Linda Mondy gives his birth place as Chester Co., Pennsylvania. Vickie Leimback gives his death place as Surry Co., North Carolina. A complaint was filed against a James Vestal on Dec. 1, 1751 in Cane Creek MM, for marrying out of meeting by a Justice of the peace and for taking strong drink. It likely refers to this James. He was living in Chatham Co., NC in 1753. He was in the tax payer lists in 1755 in Orange Co., North Carolina. He married three times. He married his third wife the same day as his son Thomas married Ann Martin in a double ring ceremony. (C-801) James married Mary JAY on 11 Aug 1751 in , Chatham, NC, USA. 14. | ![]() ![]() Notes: James Jay settled in southwestern Person Co., North Carolina. He was a private in the Revolutionary War from North Carolina. (C-458, p. 1587) He was a Baptist preacher. He died in Person Co., NC in 1833. and is buried in Jay Cemetery off of Snipes Rd (near Bushy Fork). Some of his descendants live there today. It was the same land he originally lived on in Orange Co., NC, but it became Caswell and then Person County through boundary changes. (C-642) He and his other two oldest brothers were not in their father's will supposedly because they stayed behind in North Carolina when the elder William moved to South Carolina. (C-169, 831) His full name was James George according to his descendant named JJ from Texas. (C-817) James married Mary VOSS about 1765 in Hillsboro, Orange, NC, USA. 15. | ![]() ![]() Notes: She was not in William J's will. (C-169) She like her brothers were given land near the time of their marriages by their father, William. Being a women, land was given to her husband instead. This occurred when William received a patent of land in North Carolina. They had traveled with William Jay to Casewell County, NC, and lived in the same places, all supporting the belief that Sarah is also a daughter of William. (C-1200) Supporting the fact that she is not William's child is the earliest account of the children of William Jay and Mary Vestal. It was taken from an interview of William's son John to his son Eli Jay around 1800 who remembered 7 siblings, their names and birth order. Sarah was not listed amongst them when this information was published in 1848. However, this could be because she was the child of a previous marriage to William. (C-839) Sarah married John Isaac SATTERFIELD about 1756 in , Orange, VA, USA. John (son of Unknown SATTERFIELD) was born on 12 Mar 1743 in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, United States of America; died in 1802 in Orange County, North Carolina, United States of America; was buried about 1802 in Roxboro, Person County, North Carolina, United States of America. 16. | ![]() ![]() Notes: He and his elder siblings were not mentioned in his father's will. (C-168b) One of his wives is occasionally listed as Mary Cothran, but this is likely a mix-up with his brother Joseph who was married to a Mary Cothran/Cochran. William Jay served under Zachary Brooks as a private in the Penn. Regiment of artillery, Continental Line, during the Revolutionary War (C-170, 1328). This information is again verified in the DAR lineage Book, Vol. 128, p.92 (c1916). However, this later source differs in a few instances. It states that William Jay was born in 1746 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and died in 1812 in Newberry Co., South Carolina. This birth date and place could be correct but the death date does not fit with William's will administered 28th Feb. 1797 in Newberry Co., South Carolina. Vickie Leimback listed that William II was born in 1744 in Chester Co., Pennsylvania (C-611) William married Elizabeth LNU est 1760 in , Tioga, Pennsylvania, USA. Elizabeth was born on 14 Oct 1742 in Winchester, Frederick Co., Virginia, USA; died on 4 Mar 1777 in Edgefield, Newberry Co., South Carolina, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

17. | ![]() ![]() Notes: In Oct of 1767, Joseph's father deeds him land. This would indicate that Joseph was at least 18 and probably more likely 21 years of age. It is possible that it was a wedding present in which case Joseph's estimated wedding date of 1770 is incorrect. In 1771 Joseph signed the petition to have Caswell Co. established from Orange Co., North Carolina. (C-167) He was not in his father's will. (C-169) There is a Joseph Jay in the 1790 Newberry Co., SC census that could be this Joseph. In his household there were 2 males over 16, 3 under 16 and 2 females. His will was probated on Aug. 25, 1806 in Abbeville District, South Carolina. It was apparently stolen from the courthouse and is no longer available. (C-957) Family/Spouse: Mary (Minnie) COTHRAN. 18. | ![]() ![]() Notes: This Deborah has only been in one source as the child of William and Mary Vestal Jay. This info. from J. Jay came from the book, "Settlement and Some First Families of Back Creek Valley", p. 188. She was the wife of James McCool who was disowned in 1772 for singing, swearing, dancing and gambling. She and her children remained in good standing with the church. In 1773, they apparently bought land in District 96, Bush River, SC, but sold it and returned to Virginia in 1777. (C-961) She is also not listed as the daughter of William and Mary in an interview of their son John in the late 1790's, early 1800's about his brothers and sisters. (C-839) Deborah married James MCCOOL, Jr. about 1768. James (son of James Adams MCCOOL and Anne WRIGHT) was born on 12 Dec 1747; died in 1804 in , Frederick, Virginia, USA. 19. | ![]() ![]() Notes: My source, C-611, gives John's birth place as North Carolina. John received 200 acres of land in Berkley Co., SC in his father's will adjoining the plantation where his father had resided. (C-169) John moved from SC to Waynesville, Ohio in 1803. He was a dealer in merchandise. He and his family moved to Miami Co., Ohio in 1808. As a merchandiser, he made two trips by wagon and 8 horse team to Baltimore along with his son Walter Denny Jay. (C-800) He and 9 of his 11 children lived in surrounding lands known as the "Jay Settlement". They founded the first Quaker friends in Ohio and the church was still active in 1958. He is the only Jay mentioned in "Newberry Annals" and the article was so interesting that I'm transcribing it here. "John Jay merits special mention, the removal of whom and family was more loss to Newberry than that of any other. John married Elizabeth (Betty) PUGH on 4 Mar 1773 in Bush River M.M., Newberry, SC, USA. Elizabeth (daughter of Thomas PUGH and Anne WRIGHT) was born on 6 Sep 1755 in Hopewell M.M., Frederick, VA, USA; died on 23 Apr 1821 in , Miami, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

20. | ![]() ![]() Notes: There are several contradictory pieces of information on Mary's death date and place. However, it is clear that she moved to the Little Miami area of Ohio on certificate dated 9/25/1802. She is listed as Mary Paty, wife of Charles. She and many other Quakers arrived by 12/25/1802. (C-1017) Mary married Charles PATTY on 11 Mar 1773 in , Berkeley, SC. Charles (son of Unknown PATTY) died after 1802 in Of Miami, OH. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

23. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Source C-611 gives a May 26, 1765 birth date for David Jay. David would have only been about 7 when his father bequeathed him 150 acres in his will. (C-169) During the Revolutionary War, according to family tradition, he was supposedly bedridden with the measles when Tories and Indians came to his home. His parents (only his mother was living at the time) rolled him in bed cloths and he crawled into a hollow log where he stayed all night to escape being killed.
