2. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Jane's father is listed as John of East Nottingham in her marriage record. Her father's wife, Jane signs her name directly after Johns in the witness lists. (C-299, 1302) She is highly likely to be the Jane Coppock listed in the 1800 Newberry Census record. There was a female over 45 and between the ages of 16 and 26, with 2 males between 10-16 and one under ten. Her four youngest children fit the ages of this household. If it is her, her husband, Joseph died between the time he wrote his will in 1799 and summer of 1800 when the census was taken. She moved to Ohio in 1807 with sons William and Jesse. (C-670, 931, 2254) Jane married Joseph COPPOCK in 4th da 5th mo 1769 in E. Nottingham M.M., , PA. Joseph (son of John COPPOCK and Margaret COULSON) was born on 24 Feb 1742 in Little Britain M.M., Lancaster, PA, USA; died on 1 Jan 1801. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

3. | ![]() ![]() Notes: This John could be one of two John Coppocks in the 1800 Newberry Co., Census records. The first was between ages 26 and 45. His wife was between 16 and 26 and they had two daughters under age ten. The second lived near John Coppock, Sr. and was also between 26 and 45 with wife the same, and 3 sons and two daughters under ten. It is sometimes listed that he had up to 4 wives, but this honor goes to his grandson, John, instead. (C-931,1430) In any case, he and his wife had a total of 7 children. John married Mary Ann TEAGUE in 1798. Mary died before Aug 1808. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

4. | ![]() ![]() Notes: His birth date is also recorded in Bush River MM, South Carolina records as 1771. (C-556) He is probably the Thomas Coppock who was in the 1800 Newberry Co. His executor was Samuel Coate. His witnesses were Zadock Reagen, Jesse Coppock, and Jesse Jones. (C-931, 2247E) Thomas married Elizabeth MAST about 1796. 5. | ![]() ![]() Notes: A Benjamin Coppock is listed as the head of household in the 1800 South Carolina Census, pg. 70 for Newberry District, South Carolina. Two males under age 10, 1 male between ages 26 and 45, 1 female between ages 16-26 and 1 slave are listed in this family. (C-219a, 299, 390k, 556) Benjamin Coppock and sons, Joseph and William were received on certificate from the Bush River Monthly Meeting, S. Carolina in the minutes of W. Branch Monthly Meeting, Ohio dated March 19, 1804. His wife Susannah and daughters, Jane and Elizabeth were added to these same minutes on the date of August 29, 1807. They settled 2 miles west of Ludlow Falls, Union Twp., Ohio where they raised a family of 10 children. 6. | ![]() ![]() Notes: This Joseph is possibly in the 1800 Newberry Census records between the age of 16 and 26 with a wife of the same age and two sons under age ten. (C-931) Unlike most of the Quaker families of the time, he and his wife remained in South Carolina during the great exodus. That is likely because he was disowned by the Quaker church when he married his wife who was not a Quaker. In the 1810 Newberry census, he might be the Joseph who had 2 sons under age 10, 1 male age 16 to 26 and himself from 26 to 45. Females included 3 females under age 10, 1 female age 10 to 16 and a wife his own age. (C-2307) His will appears to be probated in 1819 in Newberry Co., SC with administrators R. Evans and J. Coppock listed. (C-1403) Family/Spouse: Esther PATTERSON. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

11. | ![]() ![]() Notes: This Samuel Coppock who married Lavina Coate was the son of Moses William and Martha Lester Coppock according to Charles P. Dye (b. 1855) who submitted his Coate Coppock lineage early in the 20th century to support the Coate Coppock land lease court case. Mendenhall in his book claims that Samuel is the son of Joseph and Jane Coppock. Since Samuel is listed in his father, Joseph Coppock's will, I have connected him into this family, though there could be a Samuel in each family of similar peerage confusing the issue. (C-390L, E) Samuel married Lavina COATE after 1805. Lavina (daughter of Marmaduke COATE and Mary Jane COPPOCK) was born on 6 Mar 1791 in Newberry County, South Carolina, United States of America; died on 11 Mar 1873 in Miami County, Ohio, United States of America; was buried in Pleasant Hill, Miami County, Ohio, United States of America. 14. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Jesse lived in Union Twp., Miami Co., Ohio in the 1820 census and in Newton Twp., Miami Co., Ohio in the 1830 census. (C-1025) We know that Jesse married Anna Cothran from two sources, Hinshaw's Quaker Encyclopedia which lists both their parents and one of their children's marriage records. He sells his land in Miami Co., Ohio in 1836 and shows up in Pulaski Co., IN in 1837. He is in Hinshaw, Union M.M., OH when he marries and then disappears from Hinshaw's Quaker records. According to Alan Coppock, he left SC in 1805, moved to Ohio and then finally moved to Indiana in 1837. He had 6 sons and 1 daughter, plus 1wife, Anna, when they moved to Indiana. He built the 1st log cabin in Pulaski, IN where his next son was born in 1838 named Olvier D. He was elected one of the first three County Commissioners of Pulaski County in 1841. Jesse married Anna COTHRAN on 9 Jun 1813 in Union M.M., Miami, OH, USA. Anna (daughter of Alexander COTHRAN and Hester STEDMAN) was born in 1794; died before 1849. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |
15. | ![]() ![]() Notes: She was born in Ohio according to their 1850 census record and was only age 49 at the time. This does not match other birth date information for her, which means she was likely underestimating her age. Her place of birth is listed as South Carolina in the 1860 Howard Co., Indiana census where she is living with her son Joseph. She is listed at age 63 in this record. Her son John gives her birthplace as South Carolina. If she was born in 1797, then her birth place is more likely to be South Carolina. She died of smallpox in Tipton Co., IN according to her daughter, "Hettie's" obituary. She is listed at age 66 years, 10 months, and 20 days on her cemetery stone with a death date of Apr. 6, 1864. 24. | ![]() ![]() Notes: According to a grandson (E.W. Yount) information on his mother-in-law, Jane Coppock Coate's death certificate, Joseph Coppock was born in South Carolina. His father bought land in Miami Co., OH in 1804, but he apparently did not bring his wife and daughters north until 1807 as that is when they were received in Quaker church records. Joseph Coppock and family are in the 1850 Ohio census for Miami Co., Union Twp., Ohio on page 168. The data is as follows: Joseph Coppock, age 45, farmer, worth $2890.00, b. SC, wife Rachel, age 43, b. OH, children: Sampson, age 22, farmer; Mary A., age 17; Isaac, age 11; David, age 9; Isabell, age 9; Sarah, age 5. All children attended school including Sampson at 22. 30. | ![]() ![]() Notes: This Benjamin's birth date comes from a Genealogy blank prepared by the Ohio Dep. of Vital Records in 1962 for Annie Coppock Kransdorf's mother. They supposedly used vital records and published biographies for most of their information. It gives his birth date as Jul 18, 1817 and Sep. 17, 1890 for his death date. However, his death date differs in other sources. He is likely the Benjamin Coppock who was committed to the State Mental Institution for Insanity after having suffered a mental disorder for two years that started with being unable to sleep and grew into a state where family members stated that they feared that he was not safe to himself or others. There is a series of letters and documents that can be studied about his case in the Miami County Court House Probate section filed on Mar. 19, 1850, Case #1840, B-154. One of the documents filed by his doctor stated that it was not Epilepsy although several family members were diagnosed with Epilepsy. He is in the 1840 Newton Twp., Miami Co., Ohio census with 3 sons under age 5, 1 son from age 5-10, 1 son from 15 to 20, and he was between 20 and 30 years of age. His wife was between 20 and 30 and they had no daughters listed. Later, he and his wife moved to Pleasant Hill where he owned a flour and saw mill. He had also learned the occupation of smithing at an early age from his step-father, Henry Coate. He used this skill early in his marriage to make sickles for a living before trying farming and then milling. He was also elected as the Justice of the Peace twice in his lifetime.
