    There is a John Wilson from Harshow MM, Lancashire, Eng. who arrived on Quaker certificate on Dec 17, 1718 in Philadelphia, PA who might be this John or a parent/uncle of this John Wilson. (C-720)

    There is a possibility that he was the John Wilson of east Marlborrough, Chester Co, PA who married Elizabeth Jackson, d. of John Jackson, South Carolina., on 10/24/1741 at Londongrove. There were no Wilson witnesses. Jno. Cook, Jacob and Mary Wright were among the witnesses. He might have been the John Wilson who witnesses the marriage of Samuel Pope and Elizabeth Stevenson in Menlesson Twp., Pa in 1751 along with an Alexander Underwood and many others. Many of the Wilsons in this area at the time were Irish Quakers.

    Jane's father is listed as John of East Nottingham in her marriage record. Her father's wife, Jane signs her name directly after Johns in the witness lists. (C-299, 1302) She is highly likely to be the Jane Coppock listed in the 1800 Newberry Census record. There was a female over 45 and between the ages of 16 and 26, with 2 males between 10-16 and one under ten. Her four youngest children fit the ages of this household. If it is her, her husband, Joseph died between the time he wrote his will in 1799 and summer of 1800 when the census was taken. She moved to Ohio in 1807 with sons William and Jesse.     This John could be one of two John Coppocks in the 1800 Newberry Co., Census records. The first was between ages 26 and 45. His wife was between 16 and 26 and they had two daughters under age ten. The second lived near John Coppock, Sr. and was also between 26 and 45 with wife the same, and 3 sons and two daughters under ten. It is sometimes listed that he had up to 4 wives, but this honor goes to his grandson, John, instead. (C-931,1430) In any case, he and his wife had a total of 7 children.

    His birth date is also recorded in Bush River MM, South Carolina records as 1771. (C-556) He is probably the Thomas Coppock who was in the 1800 Newberry Co. Census records at age 26-45 with wife between 16-26. They had two daughters under age ten. In his will written in 1826, he named wife, Elizabeth, son Joseph, d. Sarah and all his other daughters. His executor was Samuel Coate. His witnesses were Zadock Reagen, Jesse Coppock, and Jesse Jones. (C-931, 2247E)

Branch Monthly Meeting, Ohio dated March 19, 1804. His wife Susannah and daughters, Jane and Elizabeth were added to these same minutes on the date of August 29, 1807.     This Joseph is possibly in the 1800 Newberry Census records between the age of 16 and 26 with a wife of the same age and two sons under age ten. (C-931) Unlike most of the Quaker families of the time, he and his wife remained in South Carolina during the great exodus. That is likely because he was disowned by the Quaker church when he married his wife who was not a Quaker. In the 1810 Newberry census, he might be the Joseph who had 2 sons under age 10, 1 male age 16 to 26 and himself from 26 to 45. Females included 3 females under age 10, 1 female age 10 to 16 and a wife his own age. (C-2307) His will appears to be probated in 1819 in Newberry Co., SC with administrators R. Evans and J.     Notes:

    This Samuel Coppock who married Lavina Coate was the son of Moses William and Martha Lester Coppock according to Charles P. Dye (b. 1855) who submitted his Coate Coppock lineage early in the 20th century to support the Coate Coppock land lease court case. Mendenhall in his book claims that Samuel is the son of Joseph and Jane Coppock. Since Samuel is listed in his father, Joseph Coppock's will, I have connected him into this family, though there could be a Samuel in each family of similar peerage confusing the issue. (C-390L, E)

    Notes:

    William emigrated to Ludlow Falls, (Newton Twp.) Miami Co., Ohio in 1807 along with some of his brothers and Mother in the early days of settlement in this region. He cleared the trees to build a log cabin and married within a couple years. He was a teamer by profession and his wagons ran from Cincinnati to the outlying settlements.

    His cemetery stone in 2004 was difficult to read. His home was in Ludlow Falls, Ohio. His death occurred 3 years after his marriage to Eunice in 1812 and I wonder if it occurred because of his trade between newly settled areas. His age listed on his stone would make his birthdate be 4/14/1789 instead of the date I've found printed in other reputable sources so I don't know which birth date is correct. (C-1017)

    Jesse lived in Union Twp., Miami Co., Ohio in the 1820 census and in Newton Twp., Miami Co., Ohio in the 1830 census. (C-1025) We know that Jesse married Anna Cothran from two sources, Hinshaw's Quaker Encyclopedia which lists both their parents and one of their children's marriage records. He sells his land in Miami Co., Ohio in 1836 and shows up in Pulaski Co., IN in 1837. He is in Hinshaw, Union M.M., OH when he marries and then disappears from Hinshaw's Quaker records. According to Alan Coppock, he left SC in 1805, moved to Ohio and then finally moved to Indiana in 1837. He had 6 sons and 1 daughter, plus 1wife, Anna, when they moved to Indiana. He built the 1st log cabin in Pulaski, IN where his next son was born in 1838 named Olvier D. He was elected one of the first three County Commissioners of Pulaski County in 1841.

    Anna died before him. He married 2 other women before he died in 1851. He has a standing tombstone in that county that verifies this.

    This Joseph might have been the Joseph in the 1827, 1830, 1835 and 1840 Union Twp., Miami Co., Ohio census records also. They need checked to verify this. There appears to have been at least two more Joseph's living at the time, one in Concord Twp., Miami Co. and one in Newton Twp., Miami Co., Ohio. (C-1025)

    This Benjamin's birth date comes from a Genealogy blank prepared by the Ohio Dep. of Vital Records in 1962 for Annie Coppock Kransdorf's mother. They supposedly used vital records and published biographies for most of their information. It gives his birth date as Jul 18, 1817 and Sep. 17, 1890 for his death date. However, his death date differs in other sources. He is likely the Benjamin Coppock who was committed to the State Mental Institution for Insanity after having suffered a mental disorder for two years that started with being unable to sleep and grew into a state where family members stated that they feared that he was not safe to himself or others. There is a series of letters and documents that can be studied about his case in the Miami County Court House Probate section filed on Mar. 19, 1850, Case #1840, B-154. One of the documents filed by his doctor stated that it was not Epilepsy although several family members were diagnosed with Epilepsy.

    I believe that Moses Marmaduke Coate had a daughter named Rachel who wrote to Amanda Pemberton Krell in 1901 from Oregon. I have not found evidence of Rachel being his daughter other than the fact that she lists her father who passed away on Feb. 24, 1901 at age 85, 2 mo, and 14 days and lists relationships to herself that often but not always fit if she is the child of Moses Marmaduke Coate.

    Notes:

    William, wife and family lived in Union Twp., Miami Co., Ohio in the 1850 census records. They had 8 children in this census and William's father, Samuel and William's older brother, Joseph C.Coate were living with them. Joseph is still living with his brother in the 1850 census where he is listed as idiodic. William and his wife moved to Council Grove, Kansas about 1888 where William is buried. He was a devout Quaker. His wife then moved back to Ohio as she didn't like the storms in Kansas. Coates related to this branch of the family also went to Oklahoma on the 1893 land run. They settled in Newkirk and Ponca City, Oklahoma.

    It is somewhat likely that Susannah married a Coates. I say this because there is an unaccounted for Susan Coates who was the head of household living next to Joseph C. Coppock (her brother) and Hannah Cothran (her Aunt??) in the 1840 Newton Twp., Miami Co., OH census. If this is her, she had 2 sons from age 15-20 and 2 daughters age 10 to 15. She was listed at age 50-60, but this could easily be misinformation from whomever gave info to the census taker. She was actually about age 47 at the time.

    Notes:

    He was born in a log cabin which still stood near Ludlow Falls, Miami Co., Ohio in the 1950s when the centennial history of the area was published. It might still be the log cabin standing there when I last visited in 2006. Joseph bought old Marmaduke's farm. He is in the 1840 Newton Twp., Miami Co., Ohio census with 3 sons under age 5, 1 son from age 5-10, 1 son from 15 to 20, and he was between 20 and 30 years of age. His wife was between 20 and 30 and they had no daughters listed. Later, he and his wife moved to Pleasant Hill where he owned a flour and saw mill. He had also learned the occupation of smithing at an early age from his step-father, Henry Coate. He used this skill early in his marriage to make sickles for a living before trying farming and then milling. He was also elected as the Justice of the Peace twice in his lifetime. (C-670, 1430, E)
