It is theory that he is the son of Christopher Cote/Coate of Drayton. He and a Christopher Coate witnessed a will in Drayton Parish in 1620.

Marmaduke wrote his own will on Sep. 30, 1641 in Burton that was proved in Taunton in 1642. He named daughters Marie and Frances, sons William and Samuel. Samuel was named his executor. The daughters aren't listed as underage.

It's also possible he is the son of Marmaduke and Mary Coate of Curry Rivel instead. He was not listed in the transcribed version of Marmaduke's will. I have not been able to locate the original to study in case his possible son Marmaduke was overlooked and thought to be referring to himself instead. A second possibility is that he was the eldest son and had already received land from his father.

Note that Joan's step mother and husband were related Coates. She is listed as the daughter of John Woodborne in her marriage record in Park's book, Apendix, G. She is listed in her grandmother's, Marie Coate's will dated 1631 so she had to have been born before 1631.

He is the John Coate, eldest son of Marmaduke, named in his cousins will that was written in 1686 and proved in 1692. He received land in Wiletown from his elder cousin, John Coate. His brother William would have received it if he had died before 1692 when it was probated.

He can't be the John who died in Curry Rivel in 1710 because he is named in his sister Elizabeth's will in 1713 along with another brother named John.

Marmaduke is listed as such in his grandfather, William Coate's will: I doe give to my grandchild Marmaduke Coate sonne of my sonne Marmaduke Twenty Poundes of the said money and to be put to increase[?] for him after the age of Twelve yeares until the age of one and twenty yeares and his father to be overseer for him. He is therefore younger than age 12 at the writing of his grandfather's will and was born between 1647-1658.

He cannot be the son of Marmaduke who is married to Joan Woodborne as their son Marmaduke wasn't born till 1663 as per baptismal records nor can he be the one married to Edith as their son Marmaduke was not born till 1674 as per baptismal records.

Marmaduke could have been buried at any of these dates in Curry Rivel records: Jan. 30, 1664, July 30, 1700, Mar 8 1705, or April 20, 1705. Because he is not in his sister, Elizabeth's will, I believe he is the one whom died young and was not around to give her any goods which she passed along in her will dated 1713.

She was christened on either Jan. 7 or 12 in 1663/4 depending upon who interpreted very difficult hand writing of the original record.
