  1. 1.  James TOBINJames TOBIN was born in 1722 in Springfield, VA; died on 6 Feb 1759 in , Hunterdon, NJ, USA.

    Notes:

According to an unrelated Tobin, most Tobins came from County Kilkenney or just west of there in Ireland. (CL-329) Before Ireland, the name came from D'Aubyn. Another Tobin was told that her ancestors were from County Cork, Ireland and might have originally been from Scotland. (CL-352) A distant cousin, S. McNeely sent a listing of multiple Tobins living in Dublin, Ireland from 1731-1794. (CL-546) There is a possibility that James was born in Somerset, Pennsylvania instead according a family tree on Ancestry.com. His death is verified by an application for Probate. He died intestate in Hunterdon Co., New Jersey. A bond was put up by William Allen of Amwell and Richard Reading. William Allen was named Administator. His sons were all too young to be bondsman. The will of James Tobin of Loudoun Co., Va., recorded 9 May, 1774, names his wife, Esther, sons George, Thomas, Joseph and Robert, and his daughters, Sarah Masterson, and Mary, Lydia, Ruth, Naomy and Rosanna Tobin. It does not name Nathaniel and Isaac so we are going to need to verify Isaac through land or DNA records as his son. If Esther married James when she was 16 and he was 19, that would be in 1741. If all of the children I have listed for James and Esther are correct, they would have been born 18 years maximum and had 12 children in that amount of time.

A Nathaniel Toby and an Isaac Toby are listed in the Hunterdon Co. New Jersey Tax Ratables in 1778 and 1789. Nathaniel is listed in 1778 as owning a small lot, 2 horned cattle and 1 hog. In 1780 he did not still own the hog. Isaac's holdings are listed on his family group sheet. These ratables were taken from Amwell Twp., Hunterdon County, New Jersey. The only other Tobin listed in Hunterdon Co. was a Thomas Tobin from Lebanon Twp. He seemed to be very well to do with 336 acres, 12 horses, 27 horned cattle and 22 hogs in 1778. (CL-197)

There is Tobey family in Sandwich, Massachusetts named Nathan Tobey who was having children. A Joseph in 1728 is another less likely but possible father of this James. Nathan left a will on 1787 in Sandwich, MA that should be located and checked. (N.E.H.G.R., Apr. 1959) There is a James Tobin who was a convict who was pressed into the service in 1755 in the Maryland Archives Records whose relationship is not yet known either.

    Notes:

I have not yet proven with certainty that the parents of Isaac are James and Esther Tobin/Tobey. Isaac Tobin was a Revolutionary War Soldier. He resided at Hunterdon Co., New Jersey at the time of his enlistment. Records of his birth are in the family bible according to Isaac's Pension Application dated 1833. The bible is in an unknown location. He first enlisted for 3 months starting Sept. 1776 under Captain Joshua Corshon's Co., Col. Chamber's Regiment. He was stationed at Woodbridge as a guard to military stores. He enlisted in the fall of 1777 for one year as a drummer, rank of private, in Capt. Thomas Patterson's Co., Col. Dayton's New Jersey Regiment, but after 4 months he took sick with the Bloody Flux and was given permanent leave. This information was from his pension application. According to Ric Tobin, a current researcher of the Tobin line, Isaac served 3 times in the Revolution and may have been at Valley Forge.

After the war, he lived in Hunterdon Co., New Jersey; Loudoun (apr.1790-1806) and Culpepper (apr.1806-1824) Counties, Virginia; and Madison Twp., Guernsey Co., Ohio (1830-1836) where he died. There is a possible sister, niece or daughter to him, Peggy, who married John Vaughn on Dec. 17, 1807 in Culpepper Co., VA while he resided there. He seems to have spelled the name Toby or Tobey while living in New Jersey, and Tobin from Virginia on. He is in the Hunterdon Co., New Jersey Tax Ratables lists in 1778 as owning a house, 10 acres and 2 horned cattle. Again in 1780 in the Hunterdon Co. Ratables, he is listed as owning 11 acres, no house and 1 hog. (CL-197) A will has not been able to be located for him at this time. Center Cemetery, where he is buried is probably located in Center Twp., just off Rte. 22, east of Center, not accessible to the road. His marker is no longer standing according to family researchers who have attempted to find his grave sight. Here is a time line of Isaac's life as it appears in public records: Feb. 1776: Nathaniel Tobey made a deputy by the high sheriff, John Baines, in a case before the Inferior Court of Common Please, Trenton, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey involving Isaac Tobey. Isaac was to appear before the court to answer a plea by Joshua Corshon for 298 pounds proclamation money which Isaac owed. (Miscellaneous Records #33454). July and Aug. 1786: Amwell Township Tax list, New Jersey. June 6, 1791: 3rd Battalion, Loudoun County, Virginia Personal Property Tax list 1795-1804: On each years Loudoun County, Virginia Tax list 1810 Culpepper Co., VA FEDERAL CENSUS RECORDS: Isaac Tobin: 1 M 0-10; 1 F 10-16; 1 M 26-45; 1 M 45 and up, 1 F 45 and up. 1811: There was an Isaac who married a Winnie Shackelford in this year that is sometimes attributed to this Isaac. However, it definitely applies to a nephew named Isaac, son of brother Nathaniel instead. (CL-110, 115) 1820 Culpepper Co. VA FEDERAL CENSUS RECORDS: Isaac Tobin: 1 M 10-16; 1 F 16-26; 1 M 45 and up, 1 F 45 and up (p. 98A) (Relatives John, Nathaniel and William all lived in Culpepper too, on page 100A) 12 Mar. 1831: Purchased land from John and Ruth Beal for $250.00 on the southwest corner of section 13, Township 4, and Range 2 of the unappropriated military land in Guernsey Co., OH containing 80 acres. (CL-279) Sept., 1833: Submitted application for Revolutionary War Pension from Guernsey Co., Ohio #56258, 9/23/1835: He received 40 acres of U.S. Military Survey land that is recorded in the Zanesville Land Office on Section 14, Range 2W, Twp 4N, 15 Apr. 1836: Last pension payment: Ohio (Pittsburgh, PA) Agency _________________________________________

    Notes:

We know for certain that Nathaniel is the son of Isaac as there have been at least 5 DNA matches from all of Isaac's son's lines that match back to Isaac. (https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Tobin) We don't yet have DNA evidence that Isaac is the son of James and Esther Tobin as often placed in print. (2015) Nathaniel, farmer, "of Loudoun County" bought two lots in Washington, Culpepper Co., Virginia, in 1800. He and Elizabeth and his father apparently moved onto this property in 1806. In 1810 he is the Nathaniel that is living in Culpepper Co., Virginia. That Nathaniel has 3 males age 0-10; 1 male age 26-45; 1 female age 0-10; and 1 female age 26-45. Nathaniel and family moved to Guernsey Co., Ohio in about 1823/24. His father Isaac followed him there several years after. (CL-111)

Family tradition that pertains to Nathaniel Tobin as remembered by Clarence Tobin of Guernsey County and recorded by Ric Tobin (Copied letter in this author's possession), is that: "Nathaniel, (Clarence's great grandfather) settled in the military land from Zanesville, Ohio. (Specifically, he bought land at $1.00 per acre on the Birmingham, Peoli Ridge). He came by an oxen pulled wagon from Maryland (In probability, VIRGINIA, although Elizabeth was from Maryland according to son George W. 1900 census info.) when Clarence's grandfather was six years old. The Hollingsworth family came with the Tobins. They settled near what is now Birmingham, Ohio They lived about two miles apart and they were the only families in the area. The Tobins were Irish." This move to Guernsey Co., Ohio, probably occurred in the mid 1820's, sometime after Mar. 9, 1823 as he is listed in the Virginia County Taxlists at that time. Nathaniel brought his family with him. His father, Isaac, followed within a few years. He received 40 acres of land in the US Military Survey on Nov 7, 1837 as recorded in the Zanesville land office in TWP 4N, Range 3W, and Section 9. (CL-542) The 1840 Federal Census Records, Guernsey Co., OH, #397, p. 385 lists Nathaniel Tobin: Guernsey Co., Monroe Twp., 1 male age 15-20, 1 male age 60- 70, 1 female 10-15, 1 female 50-60. (Note: His wife should have been listed as between age 60-70, also, not 50-60.)

Nathaniel's tombstone states that he died May 4, 1845, aged 74 years, but his will found in Will Book B, p. 149, is dated May 4 1846 and probated on June 8, 1846. Because the date on the tombstone is possibly in error, perhaps Nathaniel's age is in error also. A 1771 birth date does not seem correct as his parents did not marry until 1775. (CL-113,123,124) _______________________________________________________ Transcribed copy of "Nathaniel Tobin's Will" (with original spelling and punctuation retained) by Linda Coate: Be it remembered that at the June (terms) 1846 of the court of common Pleas in and for the county of Guernsey in the state of Ohio held at and in the courthouse within and for the county of Guernsey aforesaid on the Eighth day of June in said year the last will and testament of Nathaniel Tobin late of the county of Guernsey aforesaid deceased being brought into court for Probate (I. Notes:

Isaac is probably Wesley's father, but this is not certain. In various census records that Wesley is in, his parent's place of birth is listed differently in many. In 1860, his parents are listed as from Wales. In the 1880 census, whomever gave the info to the census taker said his parents were born in Ohio and his mother's father in Pennsylvania and her mother in Virginia. In Wesley's brother, John W. Tobin's 1900 census, it says that his father was born in Virginia and his mother in Maryland. This matches Isaac's info. This Issac was born in Virginia, but is listed as Wesley's father in my Uncle Talmadge's family tree obtained by interviewing family members in the first half of the 20th century. Another of Wesley's brothers, Edward Willett, in the 1900 census, has his father's birthplace listed as Ohio and his mother's as Virginia. Obviously, this family didn't talk much with their spouses about their parents. Wesley was a name carried down a lot, though the Isaac wasn't. Isaac and Matilda's first home after their marriage was in St. Clair Co., Ohio. By 1829, they moved to Guernsey Co., Ohio. (CL-327)

Isaac purchased land from Andrew and Mary Noble in Guernsey Co. Ohio for $250.00 on 2 July 1842. It was located on the southeast quarter of Section 4?, Township N 4 of Range No. 2 containing 40 acres. (CL-288) Isaac Tobin owned 1200 acres of land in Guernsey Co., OH, sections 13 and 14, Monroe Twp. according to the 1840 tax lists. In "Stories of Guernsey Co., Ohio it lists it as 120 acres in 13 and 14 in 1840. One of these figures is probably in error. He was also listed in the 1840 Federal Census Records in Guernsey Co., OH, pg. 382, Monroe or Washington Twp. as Isaac Tobing: Males/1 under 5/ 2 age 5-10/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 15-20/ 1 age 30-40, Females/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 30-40, 3 persons employed in agriculture. (CL-117) It is not known where he resided after 1840. They again moved in 1854 to Horse Creek, Cotton Hill Twp., Section 23, Sangamon, IL. (now Woodside Twp.)

Birth and death information on Samuel and John Tobin come from 1900 Ohio Census Records and Ohio Grave Registration cards. In both cases, their parents were not listed, so the data is only tentatively correct based on date and birth place. If John Tobin's dates turn out to be correct, he was also in the civil war, enlisting Sept. 3 1864 as an army private, Co. E, 176 Reg. C.V.I. (CL-137) U.S. Federal Census Records Checked 1820: Culpepper Co., VA p. 98a 1830: (Isaac Toben) Frederick Co., VA, p.134 1840: Guernsey Co., OH pg. 382, Washington Twp. Isaac Tobing: Males/ 1 under 5/ 2 age 5-10/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 15-20/ 1 age; 30-40 Females/ 1 age 10-15/ 1 age 30-40; 3 persons employed in agriculture (CL-38, 58, 117b)
