1. | ![]() Notes: According to David Glenn, the surname is Scottish and is related to the MacIntosh clan. Our Glenn's supposedly were Scottish borderlanders who moved from Scotland to (Co. Ulster?) Ireland and then to Virginia in the 18th century. (CL-345) Some second hand sources suggest that the Glenns first settled in Chester Co., PA between 1735 and 1740 (where Glennville is named after them) before moving to near Staunton, Augusta Co., VA in the 1740's to early 1750's where he lived on Naked Creek. Naked Creek is a stream located at 381816N Latitude and 0785452W Longtitude according to the USGS Mapping Service. (CL-413, 413d, 731) According to "Augusta Co, VA Heritage Book", he emigrated in 1742 with his friend Dr. Robert Curry along with other Glenns, Youngs (specifically his friend, Dr. Robert A. Young), Blacks and Blairs. In this account they landed in Philadelphia, PA and then traveled south settling on the lovely lands near Staunton on Naked Creek in Virginia. His large brick home was still standing in 2015 in Mt. Sydney, Virginia. The first evidence of any Glenn in Chalkley's records of Augusta Co., VA doesn't occur till 1754 when a James Glenn died there naming children William, James, John and Mary. George married Mary YOUNG, (Half sister to Martha via Thru-Lines) before 1763. Mary (daughter of James YOUNG, * and Wife 1) was born before 1748 in of Cecil Co., Maryland; died on 15 May 1789 in , Augusta, VA, USA; was buried in Fort Defiance, Augusta County, Virginia, United States of America. 3. | ![]() ![]() Notes: This James Glenn married his 2nd cousin, once removed. "1785--December 27, James Glenn and Margaret Young, daughter of Robert Young; surety, James Young." He married before he was 21 and his father sued the County Clerk for issuing him a marriage license without his parent's consent. (CL-468) The record in Chalkley's is as follows: May 1786, George Glenn vs. Alexander McClenachan.--Qui tam. Defendant, Clerk of County Court, on 27th December, 1785, issued a marriage license to James Glenn, son of George, under age, without consent of George, whereby a marriage was solemnized between James and Margaret Young. (E) They apparently moved to Monroe Co., West Virginia before moving onto Gallia Co., Ohio. (CL-676) James paid chattle taxes in 1812 and 1822 on 1 house, 1 horse and 2 cattle in in Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. (CL-566, 587) He and his wife never did have children. James married Margaret YOUNG on 28 Dec 1785 in , Augusta, VA. Margaret (daughter of Robert YOUNG, Sr. and Jean UNKNOWN) was born before 1770; died in in Of Huntington Twp., Gallia, OH, USA. 4. | ![]() ![]() Notes: William Glenn's marriage is in the Augusta Co., VA records as verified by Chakley's transcriptions: 1791, June 15th, Wm. Glenn and Anny Curry (married). Instead of his father who still appeared to be living, he was the bondsman for two of his sisters marriages, that of Sarah in 1792 and Martha in 1798. William Glenn purchased land from the Chillicothe Land Office that was on Raccoon Creek, near Vinton, Ohio in 1805. A few years previously, William, his wife Ann, and seven children had left Staunton, Augusta Co., Virginia and traveled down the Kanawha River to Point Pleasant, W.VA. where their 8th child, Robert Curry was born. It is thought that he lived out the remainder of his days in Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio and is buried in Glenn Cemetery with his wife. He was at the meeting in 1810/11 when Huntington Twp. in Gallia Co., Ohio was formed. He is listed on the Tax list for Gallia Co. in 1819 and the Census in 1820. He paid taxes on 1 house, 2 horses and 5 cattle in the Chattle lists of 1822 for Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio He is on Chattel Tax lists for Huntington Twp, Gallia Co., OH in 1823 owning the following land: 16-7-12,25 & 26 and again in 1827 owning a little less land: 16-7-25 & 26. Several of his sons moved west. Glenn County, California is named after one of them. (CL-413, 468, 499) In William's will he names his wife Amy Glenn and children Andrew Ewing and wife, Jane; John McCarley and wife Emmy, George Glenn, Hugh Glenn, Andrew Y. Glenn, Jonathan Adney and his wife, Electa and Harvey Glenn to which he all gave shares. He also mentioned sons Robert C. and Samuel Glenn of Hillsoborough that had already received their shares. It was probated Oct 21, 1837. James Glenn was the administrator. (CL-451) I have personally been able to visit the Glenn Cemetery just south of the "Entering Vinton" (Gallia Co.) sign on Route 325. It is probably on the property that belonged to his son Andrew Y. Glenn in the 1874 Gallia Co., Ohio census in section 25 of Huntington Twp. It is located behind a gate, a hundred feet or so down a gravel road on the left hand side of it's fork. It is a beautiful little cemetery set amongst the hills of Gallia. William and Ann are buried in the center of it, with a stone made in 1989 placed next to their difficult to read original giving the information from the first stone on it. An old large pine springs up behind it, surrounded by young children of the name Glenn who also died. Some of them are their children by dates, and some of them are obviously their grandchildren. A Joseph James Carlisle Glenn who died Feb 7, 1837, aged 3 yrs/3 months and 12 days was amongst these. A grave with the word "Infant" only and another next to it that was entirely unreadable were the other two in these. Off to the left hand column of the cemetery, starting near the gate are their sons and daughters families. The far right column of the cemetery (furthest from the gate) includes Indian Ewing, Holcombs and Matthews from memory. This last column we did not spend time reading, as they appeared more likely to be neighbors and members of their Presbyterian Church. The first stone that is visible as you enter the cemetery is that of Rev. Howe and his several wives and his 7 infants who died, all surrounding one single pillar type monument. This is at the front of the column that bears the children's families of some of William and Ann's sons and daughters or what I referred to as the left hand column above. In the center section where William and Ann are buried, an Elizabeth Mahala Jane Glenn who died July 5, 1831 is buried. She is obviously a daughter or granddaughter, but which is not certain. (CL-455) Shortly after William's death on Nov 22, 1838, there is a deed in the Gallia Co. courthouse entitled William Glenn to Andrew Y. Glenn for town lots in Porter, #15 &16. The deed itself states that Samuel Glenn, Robert C. Glenn and Harvey Glenn of the county of Hiland in Ohio sendeth their greetings and for the sum of 25 dollars give and released to Andrew Y. Glenn of Gallia Co., Ohio lots 15 and 16 in Porter, Ohio. These were all sons of William and Ann Curry Glenn. (CL-456) An interesting note from Tappan Adney in his pre-1950's research, states that 2 of William's sons moved to Glenn's Ferry, Snake R(iver), Idaho where they were cattlemen and married Indians. Since we know where some of the sons lived and died, the 2 sons being referred to are likely to be either Samuel, Hugh Tate, Wilson or Harvey Glenn. (CL-509) William married Ann CURRY, * on 15 Jun 1791 in , Augusta, VA. Ann (daughter of Dr. Robert Addison CURRY, * and Elizabeth "Ann" MCCOMBE) was born on 22 Jun 1768 in , Augusta, VA; died on 13 May 1850 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 14 May 1850 in , Gallia, OH, USA. (CL-186) Her father did not witness nor was he the bondsman for the marriage possibly indicating some disapproval. A William Morrison was the bondsman on Nov. 28, 1798. Martha married John MEADE on 22 Nov 1798 in , Augusta, VA. John died after 1801. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart] |

He was also the administrator of his father's estate. He had 3 wives with children by all of them. According to See's book on George Glenn, his son Hugh's son, George was the father of the infamous Dr. Hugh Glenn of California. Hugh married Elizabeth MCCAUSLAND on 28 Jul 1801 in , Augusta, VA. She married Samuel Curry in 1800 as verified in "Augusta Co. Marriages." and confirmed in her father, George Glenn's will. There was more than one Mary Glenn in this time and place. This Mary should not be confused with the Mary whose tombstone says she is the daughter of James Glenn. Family/Spouse: Unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

9. | ![]() ![]() Notes: At Ancestry, my mother's descent to James Glenn is supported by a DNA Circle that relates 5 participants all back to this same James Glenn and inter-relates them to various members in the group. In it 3 of the members descend from this James Glenn and all are related to each other through DNA. This is called triangulation and proves that we descend from James Glenn genetically: M.C., JClark2d, and w_woods57. A second triagulation in this group again is proof and that is between M.C., JClark2d and terkamazis. James Glenn "was a farmer and cabinet maker. His home, west of (Glenn) Cemetery (near Vinton), was a 'weigh station' for the 'underground railroad.' James was amongst a small group of families that emigrated from Virginia and helped found Huntington Twp. in Gallia Co., Ohio. A religious man, he was instrumental in starting the first Presbyterian Church of Huntington and Raccoon in 1829, serving as Ruling Elder and Clerk." (CL-149) He was known as Uncle Jimmy to his nieces and nephews. (CL-453) James married Mary (Polly) THARP, * on 31 Oct 1811 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA. There are multiple other land purchases by a George Glenn that might also apply to him. He is probably the father of John H. Glenn who owns multiple sections of land that adjoin George Glenn's land. George moved to Santa Cruz Co., CA for a while where at least one son was born before settling in Missouri where he died. (CL-449) George married Nancy CARLISLE on 7 Jan 1817 in , Gallia, OH, USA. 18. | ![]() ![]() Notes: Andrew is in the 1827 Gallia Co. Tax lists for chattel (not property) he owned in Huntington Twp. at that time. He purchased 41.15 acres of congressional lands in Gallia Co., on Sep 28, 1836. (CL-449) He is in in the Gallia Co. Deed records as having purchased Lot 15 & 16 in the town of Porter from his brothers, Samuel, Robert C. and Harvey Glenn on Nov. 22, 1838. The top of the deed is listed as between William Glenn's (Administrators?) to Andrew Y. Glenn. Their father William had died the previous year. The three sons selling the property in Gallia, were currently residents of Highland Co., (OH). By 1874, he is likely the A.Y. Glenn living in Twp. 7, R. 16, section 25 in the "Illustrated Atlas of Gallia Co., OH". His property was on Raccoon Creek in Huntington Twp. and bordered near property owned by W.W.Glenn and G.W. 20. | ![]() ![]() Notes: According to nephews and nieces of Electa in Adney's book, she was tall, fair, had blue eyes and was "marvelous". She was an animated person. "When she wasn't talking, she was laughing, and always on the go." She and her family didn't run on any schedule. They might not eat dinner till 11:00 p.m. You could find her and her children still in bed at noon. They lived a free lifestyle. They pictured her running with two pails of water jumping over the "low bars with a whoop like an Indian." According to Adney's relatives she died on Aug. 30, 1868, but our reading of her cemetery stone says she died on Aug. 30, 1866. The stone also says that she was 57 yrs, 7 mo, and 19 days old at the time of her death and this matches with her 1868 birth date intstead. It appears that Mary died in Missouri though no death record has been found. George remarried Elizabeth Riley by whom he had 2 more sons. George married Mary ANDERSON on 11 Dec 1823 in , , VA, USA. It was situate on the north half of the northeast quarter of section two in Twp. 6, Range 16 of Gallia Co. These were lands originally bought in Chillocothe. (CL-524) This is probably the W.R. who purchased land on May 28, 1845 in Gallia Co., Ohio in twp. 7, range 16, and section 21. He purchased 41 more acres on May 11, 1847 in section 36. (CL-449) He then sold land toMarcus Homan on Dec. 29, 1847 when his wife's name was Sarah. (CL-525) He is involved in several more land transactions throughout his lifetime. (CL-526-536) His stone is next to his parents and he does not appear to have a wife buried next to him. If we read the stone correctly, he was age 65 years, and 21 days old. All other land purchases apply to these Glenn brothers, and only this John H. is unaccounted for in the partial lists I've found for the names of James William Glenn's children. He is the right age to be the unknown male born before 1820 according to census records. Some of his land is also adjacent to George Glenn which could mean that he's the son of George Glenn instead. (CL-177) The 1890 census gives slightly different information on his service. They transcribed his name as Matton K. Glenn. 37. | ![]() ![]() Notes: It is conjecture on my part that this is the son of James and Polly Glenn. Joseph is definitely a grandson of William and Ann Curry Glenn, by placement of his gravestone in the tight circle behind William and Ann Curry's grave. He could, therefore, be a child of any of William and Ann Curry Glenn's sons. |
38. | ![]() ![]() Notes: It is theory on my part that this son listed in the 1840 census is the Joseph Carllile Glenn who died on Apr 2, 1841 aged 1 year (plus). The rest of the date is unreadable. I believe this to be true because the brother who had died a couple years before he was born to this same family was named Joseph James Carllile Glenn. It has been my experience that when a young child dies, their name is often given to a younger sibling born after their death. Joseph Carlisle Glenn who is buried near his grandparents, William and Ann Curry Glenn, would fit with info in the 1840 census where James's son was listed as having been born between 1835 and 1840. He had probably died before the 1850 census as he is not listed living with his parents at that time. Other possibilities are that Glenn's name was Gilbert. He lived in Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio in 1860, was age 32, b. in Ohio and his wife was Elizabeth, age 25. (CL-158) If so, he could be the Gilbert W. Glenn who was in the 1890 census. He had been a Private in the Civil War, Co. B, 60th Regiment of the Ohio Infantry. He enlisted on Aug. 7, 1862 and was discharged Nov. 10, 1862. He re-enlisted on Sept. 14, 1864 and was discharged June 17, 1865 in Co. D, 179th Regiment of the Ohio infantry. His address was Vinton, Morgan Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. He was age 79 at the time and still practicing law as an attorney. He is quoted as saying: "The Youngs and Glenns had very frequently intermarried in Ireland and came here from Ulster, Ireland. One of the old sayings was that if they kept on intermarrying together, they would turn to noses and feet, as large noses and feet were characteristic of the family." |
