  1. 1.  George GLENNGeorge GLENN was born in 1730 in , Londonderry, Ireland; died before 14 Mar 1815 in , Augusta, VA; was buried in 1815 in Old Stone Church, Fort Defiance, Augusta, Virginia, United States.

    Notes:

According to David Glenn, the surname is Scottish and is related to the MacIntosh clan. Our Glenn's supposedly were Scottish borderlanders who moved from Scotland to (Co. Ulster?) Ireland and then to Virginia in the 18th century. (CL-345) Some second hand sources suggest that the Glenns first settled in Chester Co., PA between 1735 and 1740 (where Glennville is named after them) before moving to near Staunton, Augusta Co., VA in the 1740's to early 1750's where he lived on Naked Creek. Naked Creek is a stream located at 381816N Latitude and 0785452W Longtitude according to the USGS Mapping Service. (CL-413, 413d, 731) According to "Augusta Co, VA Heritage Book", he emigrated in 1742 with his friend Dr. Robert Curry along with other Glenns, Youngs (specifically his friend, Dr. Robert A. Young), Blacks and Blairs. In this account they landed in Philadelphia, PA and then traveled south settling on the lovely lands near Staunton on Naked Creek in Virginia. His large brick home was still standing in 2015 in Mt. Sydney, Virginia. The first evidence of any Glenn in Chalkley's records of Augusta Co., VA doesn't occur till 1754 when a James Glenn died there naming children William, James, John and Mary.

As for George Glenn, once a year, these Scotch Irish settlers would meet at his home to compete amongst themselves in a variety of sports and contests. These included weight lifting, running, jumping, boxing, wrestling, fencing, and sword dancing. He called his hill and hollow "Glenn Cose" after Scotland's "Glencoc". Part of the house that he built around 1750 was is still standing at Glen Cose. (CL-391, 676)

George Glenn was a private in the Revolutionary War, in Capt. Reuben Harrison's Co., Augusta, Virginia and Capt. Anderson's Co., Augusta, VA. He is listed in the DAR Patriot Index, Vol. I, pg. 271 as a private. (CL-171) (CL-259) His birthdate is truly not known. It is listed anywhere from 1715-1740. The earlier dates are unlikely since he was a private in the American Revolution and lived to 1815. I'm using the 1740 birthdate given on his Revolutionary War records. The 1740 birthdate would also better match his children's birthdates listed in the family bible of Hugh Glenn. (CL-185)

George Glenn is listed in the 1782 Taxpayers Lists for Virginia. He is the only Glenn listed in Augusta Co., VA and he owned no slaves according to this record. (CL-173) George Glenn does not appear in the 1790 census records for Virginia, but I have been unable to locate any census records for the supposed county of his residence, Augusta Co. They appear to have burned. (CL-172). (CL-185) He purchased 18 acres of land on Apr 7, 1796 on the waters of Naked Creek which lay between his current land and that of Robert Young's land. It also bordered on Peter Tetree's land. This is land that was very near where his wife's father's land was. Since the purchase of his original land is not in the records, it is possible his wife and inherited some land from her father. http://lva1.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/F/SYN8RBNYTXI23K6T2K3XB77J8PXDENKLATYSJIXXCXRAI1DF58-41373?func=full-set-set&set_number=007425&set_entry=000001&format=999

He is in the court records according to Chalkley: Aug 1796, William, Samuel, James Anderson and George Glenn (defendants) vs. William Young (orator).--Writ. Chancery, 27th September, 1793. William and Samuel were brothers. Petition by William Young, 1792, states that some years ago he employed George Nicholas to commence and prosecute this cause, that on removal of George (to Kentucky) from this county the case was entrusted to John Nicholas, who drew and filed the bill, shortly after which John also declined practicing in this court, and left his business to Robert Jouett, Esq., Attorney, who has also declined practicing in this court. Witness is aged and infirm. Petition for rehearing. Ellinor Young, wife of William Young, orator, 1st November, 1793. Samuel Anderson and George Glenn returned no inhabitants, 25th August, 1790. Samuel Anderson's deposition 15th February, 1791, before Benjamin Harrison, a Justice of Bourbon County. Pennsylvania executed on Samuel Anderson, 30th August, 1787.

It appears that George returned to Augusta Co., Virginia. George Glenn's Will was in Augusta Co., Will Book No. XI, pg. 458, : "In the name of God Amen, this 22nd day of December 1801, I George Glenn of Augusta County and State of Virginia, being in my ordinary health and sences do think it necessary at this time to make this my last Will and Testament first I recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God through the merits of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ when he will be pleased to remove me and my Body I recommend to the Earth to be decently Buried at the discretion of my Executors herein after named, and all my worldly Estate both real and personal, I give bequeth and dispose of the same in the following manner. Signed, Sealed, published and pronounced in the Presence of John Anderson, Jas Anderson, Geo. Anderson. Signed: George Glenn Probated 11 March, 1815; commission as Justices of Augusta County to take deposition of George Anderson, an aged and infirm witness, returned executed 14th March 1815. Proved 14th March, 1815 (George Anderson is dead since above deposition; James and John Anderson are also dead). Executor qualifies." His will supposedly does not list his children in their birth order.

DAR records state that George actually died in 1801 and that it took this long for Hugh Glenn to have his father's estate administered. In any case, what we know is that George died between Dec. of 1801 and Mar. of 1815. He and his wife are buried in the old stone cemetery of the Augusta Stone Presbyterian Church at Fort Defiance. Their daughter Mary, his wife's father, James Young and his friend Dr. Robert Curry are buried there.

An excellent article at https://familysearch.org/photos/artifacts/12482240 based upon personal knowledge of George's great grandson, Robert Addison Glenn gives this account of George. "GEORGE GLENN was born about 1720 in the northern part of Ireland near Londonderry. He was Scotch-Irish Presbyterian. When he was about fifteen years of age he married in Ireland, a Miss Young, also a Scotch-Irish Presbyterian. Shortly after their marriage he and his bride immigrated to America with a party of other Scotch-Irish Presbyterians, among whom was Dr. Robert Curry and his bride Ann Curry, and others.

This emigrant party first came into Pennsylvania about 1745, but immediately afterwards came south with the tide of Scotch-Irish emigrants who were then settling in the great Valley of Virginia. George Glenn patented and settled on what is known as the David Hunter, Sr. farm on the headwaters of Middle Branch of Naked Creek, Augusta County, Virginia, and built the old residence now standing on the farm. By his said wife George Glenn had seven children, three sons and four daughters, viz.: Sarah, Nancy, Margaret, William, James, Hugh, Mary."

My great Aunts wondered if this line of Glenns might be related to the American Astronaut, John Glenn. In John Glenn's ancestry from Coleraine, Ireland to here, I have not found a connection. (CL-261)

George married Mary YOUNG, (Half sister to Martha via Thru-Lines) before 1763. Mary (daughter of James YOUNG, * and Wife 1) was born before 1748 in of Cecil Co., Maryland; died on 15 May 1789 in , Augusta, VA, USA; was buried in Fort Defiance, Augusta County, Virginia, United States of America. 1. 2.  Nancy Agnes GLENNNancy Agnes GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (1.George1) was born on 10 Dec 1763 in Naked Creek, Augusta, VA; died in in Of Highland, OH.

    Notes:

She and her husband moved to Highland Co., Ohio. Since we do not know when that date was, she might be the Agnes Miller in the following Chalkley record for Augusta Co., VA. "Page 380.--23d January, 1804. Robert (X) Cummins' will--To wife, Margaret; son, John; to Agnes Miller; to children, Jean, Robert, Margaret,Martha; to Phoeby Alford; to grandchildren, Robt. Gray and Jno.Rutherford. Executors, wife Margaret and son John. Teste: Jas. Cunningham.Wm. Bell. Proved, 26th November, 1804. John Cummins refused. Margaretis dead. Administration granted son John and daughter Margaret. (CL-468, 676)"

Nancy married Wert MILLER before 16 Nov 1790. Wert died in in Of Highland, OH. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  2. 3.  James GLENNJames GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (1.George1) was born on 1 May 1765 in Naked Creek, Augusta, VA; died after 1822 in Of Huntington Twp., Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

This James Glenn married his 2nd cousin, once removed. "1785--December 27, James Glenn and Margaret Young, daughter of Robert Young; surety, James Young." He married before he was 21 and his father sued the County Clerk for issuing him a marriage license without his parent's consent. (CL-468) The record in Chalkley's is as follows: May 1786, George Glenn vs. Alexander McClenachan.--Qui tam. Defendant, Clerk of County Court, on 27th December, 1785, issued a marriage license to James Glenn, son of George, under age, without consent of George, whereby a marriage was solemnized between James and Margaret Young. (E) They apparently moved to Monroe Co., West Virginia before moving onto Gallia Co., Ohio. (CL-676) James paid chattle taxes in 1812 and 1822 on 1 house, 1 horse and 2 cattle in in Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. (CL-566, 587) He and his wife never did have children.

James married Margaret YOUNG on 28 Dec 1785 in , Augusta, VA. Margaret (daughter of Robert YOUNG, Sr. and Jean UNKNOWN) was born before 1770; died in in Of Huntington Twp., Gallia, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  3. 4.  William GLENNWilliam GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (1.George1) was born on 22 Jun 1767 in Naked Creek, Augusta, VA; died on 31 May 1832 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 1 Jun 1832 in Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

William Glenn's marriage is in the Augusta Co., VA records as verified by Chakley's transcriptions: 1791, June 15th, Wm. Glenn and Anny Curry (married). Instead of his father who still appeared to be living, he was the bondsman for two of his sisters marriages, that of Sarah in 1792 and Martha in 1798. William Glenn purchased land from the Chillicothe Land Office that was on Raccoon Creek, near Vinton, Ohio in 1805. A few years previously, William, his wife Ann, and seven children had left Staunton, Augusta Co., Virginia and traveled down the Kanawha River to Point Pleasant, W.VA. where their 8th child, Robert Curry was born. It is thought that he lived out the remainder of his days in Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio and is buried in Glenn Cemetery with his wife. He was at the meeting in 1810/11 when Huntington Twp. in Gallia Co., Ohio was formed. He is listed on the Tax list for Gallia Co. in 1819 and the Census in 1820. He paid taxes on 1 house, 2 horses and 5 cattle in the Chattle lists of 1822 for Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio He is on Chattel Tax lists for Huntington Twp, Gallia Co., OH in 1823 owning the following land: 16-7-12,25 & 26 and again in 1827 owning a little less land: 16-7-25 & 26. Several of his sons moved west. Glenn County, California is named after one of them. (CL-413, 468, 499) In William's will he names his wife Amy Glenn and children Andrew Ewing and wife, Jane; John McCarley and wife Emmy, George Glenn, Hugh Glenn, Andrew Y. Glenn, Jonathan Adney and his wife, Electa and Harvey Glenn to which he all gave shares. He also mentioned sons Robert C. and Samuel Glenn of Hillsoborough that had already received their shares. It was probated Oct 21, 1837. James Glenn was the administrator. (CL-451) I have personally been able to visit the Glenn Cemetery just south of the "Entering Vinton" (Gallia Co.) sign on Route 325. It is probably on the property that belonged to his son Andrew Y. Glenn in the 1874 Gallia Co., Ohio census in section 25 of Huntington Twp. It is located behind a gate, a hundred feet or so down a gravel road on the left hand side of it's fork. It is a beautiful little cemetery set amongst the hills of Gallia. William and Ann are buried in the center of it, with a stone made in 1989 placed next to their difficult to read original giving the information from the first stone on it. An old large pine springs up behind it, surrounded by young children of the name Glenn who also died. Some of them are their children by dates, and some of them are obviously their grandchildren. A Joseph James Carlisle Glenn who died Feb 7, 1837, aged 3 yrs/3 months and 12 days was amongst these. A grave with the word "Infant" only and another next to it that was entirely unreadable were the other two in these. Off to the left hand column of the cemetery, starting near the gate are their sons and daughters families. The far right column of the cemetery (furthest from the gate) includes Indian Ewing, Holcombs and Matthews from memory. This last column we did not spend time reading, as they appeared more likely to be neighbors and members of their Presbyterian Church. The first stone that is visible as you enter the cemetery is that of Rev. Howe and his several wives and his 7 infants who died, all surrounding one single pillar type monument. This is at the front of the column that bears the children's families of some of William and Ann's sons and daughters or what I referred to as the left hand column above. In the center section where William and Ann are buried, an Elizabeth Mahala Jane Glenn who died July 5, 1831 is buried. She is obviously a daughter or granddaughter, but which is not certain. (CL-455) Shortly after William's death on Nov 22, 1838, there is a deed in the Gallia Co. courthouse entitled William Glenn to Andrew Y. Glenn for town lots in Porter, #15 &16. The deed itself states that Samuel Glenn, Robert C. Glenn and Harvey Glenn of the county of Hiland in Ohio sendeth their greetings and for the sum of 25 dollars give and released to Andrew Y. Glenn of Gallia Co., Ohio lots 15 and 16 in Porter, Ohio. These were all sons of William and Ann Curry Glenn. (CL-456) An interesting note from Tappan Adney in his pre-1950's research, states that 2 of William's sons moved to Glenn's Ferry, Snake R(iver), Idaho where they were cattlemen and married Indians. Since we know where some of the sons lived and died, the 2 sons being referred to are likely to be either Samuel, Hugh Tate, Wilson or Harvey Glenn. (CL-509)

William married Ann CURRY, * on 15 Jun 1791 in , Augusta, VA. Ann (daughter of Dr. Robert Addison CURRY, * and Elizabeth "Ann" MCCOMBE) was born on 22 Jun 1768 in , Augusta, VA; died on 13 May 1850 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 14 May 1850 in , Gallia, OH, USA. 4. 5.  Martha GLENNMartha GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (1.George1) was born on 29 Jan 1772; died before 1801.

    Notes:

If this Martha was married to John Meade, she was a widower at the time. Her brother, William Glenn, swore she was of age and was the daughter of George Glenn. (CL-186) Her father did not witness nor was he the bondsman for the marriage possibly indicating some disapproval. A William Morrison was the bondsman on Nov. 28, 1798.

Martha married John MEADE on 22 Nov 1798 in , Augusta, VA. John died after 1801. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  5. 6.  Hugh GLENNHugh GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (1.George1) was born on 11 Dec 1774 in Naked Creek, Augusta, VA; died on 24 Jan 1834 in Mt. Sidney, Augusta, VA; was buried in Fort Defiance, Augusta County, Virginia, United States of America.

    Notes:

Kevin Kirk in "Augusta County Virginia Heritage Book" states that Hugh was listed as the only son of George who remained in Augusta Co., VA and inherited his father's estate. He was also the administrator of his father's estate. He had 3 wives with children by all of them. According to See's book on George Glenn, his son Hugh's son, George was the father of the infamous Dr. Hugh Glenn of California.

The birth dates for this family came from Hugh Glenn's Bible. On the inside front cover it is inscribed "Hugh Glenn's Book, 12/25/1796." In several cases the dates were very difficult to read and might be misinterpreted. (CL-343) Three of his children's names were illegible with birth dates of 3/25/180(8?), 12/23/1809, and 1/15/1812. We have determined that the child born in 1809 was also named George. It's likely that his first son named George died before 1809. (CL-343) He was the founder of Mt. Sidney in Augusta Co., VA which was named by a relative through marriage, Samuel Curry.

Hugh married Elizabeth MCCAUSLAND on 28 Jul 1801 in , Augusta, VA. Elizabeth (daughter of John MCCAUSLAND) died after 20 Jun 1820. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 7.  Sarah GLENNSarah GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (1.George1) was born before 1778; died in 1798.

Sarah married Robert YOUNG, Jr. on 27 Feb 1792 in Augusta, Virginia, USA. Robert (son of Robert YOUNG, Sr. and Jean UNKNOWN) was born after 1775 in Augusta, Virginia, USA; died in 1815 in , Monroe, VA, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  7. 8.  Mary GLENNMary GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (1.George1) was born on 9 Jun 1778; died on 23 Apr 1863 in , Augusta, VA; was buried about 26 Apr 1863 in , Augusta, VA.

    Notes:

Mary's birth date was listed as Nov. 15, 1774 in at least one source and June 9, 177(8) in her brother's family bible. She married Samuel Curry in 1800 as verified in "Augusta Co. Marriages." and confirmed in her father, George Glenn's will. There was more than one Mary Glenn in this time and place. This Mary should not be confused with the Mary whose tombstone says she is the daughter of James Glenn.

Mary is listed as the daughter of George Glenn, infant, in the will of her grandfather, James Young. She would have been at least 12 at the time, but the term infant simply minor or under age in that period. (CL-185) Mary's husband was her cousin. (CL-468) According to Margaret Robinson, she and her husband removed to Staunton Co., VA. That is not where I have them at the end of their lives when they died though.

Family/Spouse: Unknown. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

At Ancestry, my mother's descent to James Glenn is supported by a DNA Circle that relates 5 participants all back to this same James Glenn and inter-relates them to various members in the group. In it 3 of the members descend from this James Glenn and all are related to each other through DNA. This is called triangulation and proves that we descend from James Glenn genetically: M.C., JClark2d, and w_woods57. A second triagulation in this group again is proof and that is between M.C., JClark2d and terkamazis. James Glenn "was a farmer and cabinet maker. His home, west of (Glenn) Cemetery (near Vinton), was a 'weigh station' for the 'underground railroad.' James was amongst a small group of families that emigrated from Virginia and helped found Huntington Twp. in Gallia Co., Ohio. A religious man, he was instrumental in starting the first Presbyterian Church of Huntington and Raccoon in 1829, serving as Ruling Elder and Clerk." (CL-149) He was known as Uncle Jimmy to his nieces and nephews. (CL-453)

James paid taxes on his chattel in the 1827 tax lists for Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio (CL-499, 587) He was involved in several land transactions after that date. On Feb 3, 1831, Andrew Y. Glenn and his wife, Margaret, sold 30 acres of land on the west side of the northwest quarter of Section 25, Twp.7, Range 16 from lands he bought at Chillicothe, Ohio to James Glenn (his brother) for 200 hundred dollars. (CL-DOC, V. 12, p. 147) On Nov. 23, 1833, John B. Poindexter sold land in Range 16, Twp. 7 & part of Section 25 &26 bordering on Raccoon Creek for $275.00 to James. Both of these properties are listed as in his possession in the 1874 Gallia Co., Ohio Atlas. (V. 12, p. 146) (CL-523, 590) On Sep 6, 1834, James Glenn & Polly, his wife, sold Andrew Y. Glenn a section of the northeast corner of the north west quarter of Section 25 in Twp. 7,, Range 16 for 96 dollars. It abutted Raccoon Creek. (CL-524, V. 12, p. 653) The last record found was on Mar 2, 1864 between James Glenn and his son, Milton K. Glenn. Milton bought ten acres of land from his father for $200.00 in Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio that was part of the northeast quarter of Section 20. (CL-537, Vol. 33, p. 585) The 1880 Ohio census record, pg. 425D, Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Oh, says that he was born in Virginia in 1792 as were his parents. His wife was born in Pennsylvania as were her parents. She was 67 and he was 88 in this 1880 census. (CL-229)

According to readings of his cemetery stone, he died on Jan 11, 1886, age 93 yrs, 9 months and 19 days. This would make his birth date to be Mar 23, 1792 - and needs rechecking as it doesn't match previous information on his day of birth.

James was married to all three of the above women. Two of them are verified by their gravestones in Glenn Cemetery. His last two wives names can be verified in the administration of James Glenn's will. His first wife's nickname, Polly, is on her gravestone. She is listed as Mary in the 1850 and 1860 census. His marriage to his first wife, Mary (Polly) Tharp was the first marriage that occurred after Huntington Twp. was formed from Raccoon Twp. in 1810. She was the mother of all his children. (CL-411) A transcription of his second marriage follows: "James Glenn and Mary M. Hartsook: The State of Ohio Gallia County (...) I do hereby certify that on the 22nd day of December AD 1863 by (venture) of License issued by the Judge of the Probate Court of said county. I joined in marriage James Glenn and Mary M Hartsook Given under my hand the 29th day of December in the year 1863. H.R. How M.V.D." (CL-181)

The following will of James Glenn is from the Gallia Co. Courthouse. It is being transcribed with original spelling and punctuation retained by Linda Coate Dudick. Said Will was not deposited during the lifetime of the Testator, in the office of the Judge of the Probate Curt of said County, for safe-keeping, as allowed by law. Said Testator died leaving Mary Glenn his widow and the following persons all his next of kin resident in the State of Ohio. Eliza Jane Clark, daughter, P.O. Box Rio Grande, O; Electa Radikin, daughter, Rio Grande, O; M.K. Sworn to before me and subscribed in my presence this 21 day of January A.D. 1886 John J. Thomas Probate Judge. (CL-153)

The administration of James Glenn's will gives us clues as to the married names of his unknown daughters as the following grandchildren are listed as living relatives: Grandsons, Curtis Davis, William G. (Davis) and Granddaughters, Rathsheba Dye(r), Mary Vie(r)s, and (Terza) Quickle. (CL-154,155,453) Unknown or additional Glenn children might prove to be any of the following Glenn's located in records about Gallia County. Elizabeth Mahala Jane Glenn, died July 5, 1831, aged 7 years, 8 months, 19 days (buried near likely grandparents, William and Ann Curry Glenn). (From her age, she is either James or brother George's daughter.) Born in 1823, she has the exact same tree symbol carved on her stone as her possible brother, James Carlille Glenn, son of James Glenn. Polly Ann Glenn, died Feb 2, 1837, aged 15 years 4 months and 12 days. She is buried near her grandparents, William and Ann Glenn in the center of Glenn Cemetery, as all their grandchildren that died as children seem to be. There is a tree symbol on her cemetery stone, like several other suspected children of this James and Polly Glenn. Franklin J. Glenn & Samantha had a d. Ella in 1869. George W. Glenn married to Jane J. Tyler who had a son Edmore F. in 1870. (I personally believe these last two are a generation after his children and are either grandsons or gr. nephews).

    Notes:

It is likely that this George Glenn was the George that purchased land in Gallia Co., Ohio on Nov. 23, 1837 in Twp. 7, range 16 (Huntington Twp.), section 21. There are multiple other land purchases by a George Glenn that might also apply to him. He is probably the father of John H. Glenn who owns multiple sections of land that adjoin George Glenn's land. George moved to Santa Cruz Co., CA for a while where at least one son was born before settling in Missouri where he died. (CL-449)

George married Nancy CARLISLE on 7 Jan 1817 in , Gallia, OH, USA. Nancy was born in 1796 in , Monroe, VA; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Samuel is listed of Hillsborough (Highland Co., OH) in his father's 1837 will. This is a town located SW of Chillocothe, Ohio He again is listed as a resident of Highland Co., OH when he sells his brother Andrew Y. Glenn land in Gallia Co., OH in 1838. (CL-451)

Samuel married Jane Mcclean BLACK on 12 Feb 1824 in Mossy Creek Pres. Ch., Rockingham, VA, USA. Jane was born in 1804; died in 1856. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  5. 13.  Nancy Ann GLENNNancy Ann GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (4.William2, 1.George1) was born after 1798; and died.

    Notes:

Nancy was listed as Emmy in her father's estate papers, wife of John McCarley. John McCarley when he married Nancy Ann in 1813 records, was then listed as Ann. Obviously, she went by a couple different names and must have not liked the name Nancy all that much. (CL-493E)

Nancy married John MCCARLEY on 3 Jul 1813 in , Gallia, OH, USA. John died after 1837. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  6. 14.  Hugh Tate GLENNHugh Tate GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (4.William2, 1.George1) was born in 1800 in , Augusta, VA; died on 1 Feb 1862 in Of Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Hugh owned 1 horse and 2 cattle in Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., OH in 1822 for which he was taxed. Hugh again owned chattel for which he was taxed in Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., OH in 1827. (CL-499) He purchased 40 acres in Twp. 6, range 16, section 12 on Dec. 6, 1832 in Gallia Co., Ohio. There were 8 members of Hugh's household in the 1840 census: 2 males under 5, 2 age 10-15, 1 age 15-20, 1 age 40-50; one female age 5-10 and 1 female age 30-40. (CL-23, 449) He is listed with the word twins after his name. (CL-453)

Hugh married Senatha PRUETT on 5 Mar 1822. Senatha was born about 1803 in , , VA, USA; died on 22 Nov 1893. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

Robert C. Glenn moved with his family to Hillsborough, OH along with brother Samuel, both mentioned in their father's will as already having received their share of his estate. He married his cousin, Janetta and supposedly died in Missouri. (CL-451, 468)

Robert married Janetta CURRY about 1826. Janetta (daughter of Mary GLENN) was born in 1805 in , , VA, USA; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  10. 18.  Andrew Young GLENNAndrew Young GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (4.William2, 1.George1) was born on 19 Apr 1806 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died on 22 Aug 1888 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 25 Aug 1888 in Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

Andrew is in the 1827 Gallia Co. Tax lists for chattel (not property) he owned in Huntington Twp. at that time. He purchased 41.15 acres of congressional lands in Gallia Co., on Sep 28, 1836. (CL-449) He is in in the Gallia Co. Deed records as having purchased Lot 15 & 16 in the town of Porter from his brothers, Samuel, Robert C. and Harvey Glenn on Nov. 22, 1838. The top of the deed is listed as between William Glenn's (Administrators?) to Andrew Y. Glenn. Their father William had died the previous year. The three sons selling the property in Gallia, were currently residents of Highland Co., (OH). By 1874, he is likely the A.Y. Glenn living in Twp. 7, R. 16, section 25 in the "Illustrated Atlas of Gallia Co., OH". His property was on Raccoon Creek in Huntington Twp. and bordered near property owned by W.W.Glenn and G.W. Glenn in Morgan Twp., Gallia Co., OH just to the east of him and W.C. Glenn and James Glenn literally to the direct west of him in section 26 of Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio (CL-PHO, 499)

In the Glenn family cemetery south of Vinton, Ohio where he and his wife are buried, a William C. Glenn, b. Jun 21, 1831 who died on Mar 1, 1907 married to an Elizabeth was his son. William C. was a Civil War veteran and was buried in the same grouping with Andrew Y. Glenn. Persons were definitely buried in family groupings in the Glenn Cemetery, and it is highly likely that William C. Glenn will turn out to be Andrew Y. Glenn's son from the layout of the cemetery. (CL-455) Andrew Young Glenn and his wife lived to be a very old. He and his wife lived with their son, Robert Emmett Glenn by that time. He is remembered by his great grandson Roy Steele Glenn as having long white hair and beard to his shoulders sitting in an arm chair with bible in hand. He was apparently an operator on the Underground railroad like his brother, James. (CL-509)

Andrew married Margaret Ann VIERS on 26 Oct 1829 in , Gallia, OH, USA. Margaret was born on 22 Apr 1811 in , , VA, USA; died on 23 Jun 1886 in , Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 24 Jun 1886 in Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    2. 43. Samantha Howe GLENN  Descendancy chart to this point was born in 1835; died in 1916.
    3. 44. Robert Emmet GLENN  Descendancy chart to this point was born on 29 Jun 1849; died in 1924 in Meadow Run, Pike, OH, USA; was buried in 1924 in Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.

  11. 19.  Harvey GLENNHarvey GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (4.William2, 1.George1) was born about 1808 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died after 1838.

    Notes:

Harvey probably died in Hillsborough, Highland Co., Ohio He, his brothers Samuel and Robert, were all of "Hiland" Co., Ohio in an 1838 deed in which they sold brother Andrew Y. Glenn lots 15 and 16 in Porter, Ohio. The deed was filed in Gallia Co., probably as part of their father William's estate settlement who had died the previous year. (CL-456)

Harvey married Nancy PRUETT on 26 Nov 1829 in , Gallia, OH, USA. Nancy was born in 1809 in , Monroe, VA; and died. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  12. 20.  Wealtha Electa GLENNWealtha Electa GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (4.William2, 1.George1) was born on 11 Jan 1811 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA; died on 30 Aug 1868 in Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 1 Sep 1868 in Glenn Cemetery, Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

According to nephews and nieces of Electa in Adney's book, she was tall, fair, had blue eyes and was "marvelous". She was an animated person. "When she wasn't talking, she was laughing, and always on the go." She and her family didn't run on any schedule. They might not eat dinner till 11:00 p.m. You could find her and her children still in bed at noon. They lived a free lifestyle. They pictured her running with two pails of water jumping over the "low bars with a whoop like an Indian." According to Adney's relatives she died on Aug. 30, 1868, but our reading of her cemetery stone says she died on Aug. 30, 1866. The stone also says that she was 57 yrs, 7 mo, and 19 days old at the time of her death and this matches with her 1868 birth date intstead. (CL-376)

Wealtha married Jonathan ADNEY on 2 Mar 1828 in , Gallia, OH, USA. Jonathan was born on 9 Jan 1799 in Adney Gap, Franklin, VA; died on 18 Oct 1866 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA; was buried about 20 Oct 1866 in Glenn Cemetery, Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

George might have married his step-sister. Sharon Forkell believes that Mary was the daughter of James William Anderson and Rebecca Turk. Rebecca was George's step-mother. If Mary is her daughter by her first marriage, she was not a blood relative to George. Somewhere after 1824 and before 1847, George and Mary moved to Monroe County, MO. It appears that Mary died in Missouri though no death record has been found. George remarried Elizabeth Riley by whom he had 2 more sons.

George married Mary ANDERSON on 11 Dec 1823 in , , VA, USA. Mary was born about 13 Dec 1805; died on 21 Dec 1845 in Paris, Monroe, MO; was buried in Pioneer Cemetery, Paris, Monroe, MO. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Notes:

William Glenn sold land to Henry Eagle on Nov. 30, 1839 in Gallia Co. deeds, V. 16, p. 246. His wife's name was Maria. It was situate on the north half of the northeast quarter of section two in Twp. 6, Range 16 of Gallia Co. These were lands originally bought in Chillocothe. (CL-524) This is probably the W.R. who purchased land on May 28, 1845 in Gallia Co., Ohio in twp. 7, range 16, and section 21. He purchased 41 more acres on May 11, 1847 in section 36. (CL-449) He then sold land toMarcus Homan on Dec. 29, 1847 when his wife's name was Sarah. (CL-525) He is involved in several more land transactions throughout his lifetime. (CL-526-536) His stone is next to his parents and he does not appear to have a wife buried next to him. If we read the stone correctly, he was age 65 years, and 21 days old. (CL-455)

    Notes:

This male could be John H. Glenn who married Jane Dupre on 1/1/1839 in Gallia Co., Ohio. He purchased 79.28 acres on Nov 22, 1847 in Twn. 7, range 16, section 19; 39.37 acres on twn. 7, range 16, section 20 on Nov. 20, 1847; and 156.88 acres on Nov 22, 1847 in Twn. 7, range 16 and section 20. All other land purchases apply to these Glenn brothers, and only this John H. is unaccounted for in the partial lists I've found for the names of James William Glenn's children. He is the right age to be the unknown male born before 1820 according to census records. Some of his land is also adjacent to George Glenn which could mean that he's the son of George Glenn instead. (CL-162, 449)

    Notes:

Milton is in the Ohio Grave Registrations with his birth and death dates as given. His upright gravestone was in row 26, grave 39. He enlisted in the Civil War on Aug. 15, 1861 and was discharged on Nov. 24, 1862. He was a private in the Army, Co. B, 36th regiment, O.V.I. (CL-177) The 1890 census gives slightly different information on his service. They transcribed his name as Matton K. Glenn. It agrees accept for the dates, listing his enlistment as Aug. 12, 1851 and his discharge as Nov. 28, 1862. He had sustained a gunshot wound to his right hand. His address was listed as Vinton, Huntington Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. (CL-363) Milton purchased 10 acres of land from his father on Aug. 13, 1864 in Gallia Co. Deed records. He was an operator on the Underground Railroad along with his father, an uncle and a cousin. (CL-537)

Milton married Sarah E. LEWIS on 6 Jan 1853 in , Gallia, OH, USA. Sarah was born on 11 Jan 1832 in , Miami, OH, USA; died on 5 Mar 1904 in Huntington Twp, Gallia, OH, USA. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

  9. 37.  Joseph James Carlisle GLENNJoseph James Carlisle GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (9.James3, 4.William2, 1.George1) was born about 23 Nov 1833 in Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA; died on 7 Feb 1837 in Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

It is conjecture on my part that this is the son of James and Polly Glenn. Joseph is definitely a grandson of William and Ann Curry Glenn, by placement of his gravestone in the tight circle behind William and Ann Curry's grave. He could, therefore, be a child of any of William and Ann Curry Glenn's sons.

  10. 38.  Joseph Carlisle GLENNJoseph Carlisle GLENN Descendancy chart to this point (9.James3, 4.William2, 1.George1) was born before Apr 1840 in , Gallia, OH, USA; died on 2 Apr 1841 in Vinton, Gallia, OH, USA.

    Notes:

It is theory on my part that this son listed in the 1840 census is the Joseph Carllile Glenn who died on Apr 2, 1841 aged 1 year (plus). The rest of the date is unreadable. I believe this to be true because the brother who had died a couple years before he was born to this same family was named Joseph James Carllile Glenn. It has been my experience that when a young child dies, their name is often given to a younger sibling born after their death. Joseph Carlisle Glenn who is buried near his grandparents, William and Ann Curry Glenn, would fit with info in the 1840 census where James's son was listed as having been born between 1835 and 1840. He had probably died before the 1850 census as he is not listed living with his parents at that time. Other possibilities are that Glenn's name was Gilbert. He lived in Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio in 1860, was age 32, b. in Ohio and his wife was Elizabeth, age 25. (CL-158) If so, he could be the Gilbert W. Glenn who was in the 1890 census. He had been a Private in the Civil War, Co. B, 60th Regiment of the Ohio Infantry. He enlisted on Aug. 7, 1862 and was discharged Nov. 10, 1862. He re-enlisted on Sept. 14, 1864 and was discharged June 17, 1865 in Co. D, 179th Regiment of the Ohio infantry. His address was Vinton, Morgan Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. (CL-363) An alternate possibility for this Glenn is Meredith, age 22 in 1860, wife's name Janet age 20. (CL-158) There is a George W. Glenn in the 1890 census who was a Private in the Civil War. He enlisted on Sept. 1864 and was Discharge on June 23, 1865 with Disease of lungs and eyes. He was in Co. D, 179th Reg. His address was listed as Tycoon, Raccoon Twp., Gallia Co., Ohio. (CL-363) There is also a P. Glenn who was married to Sarah Ann. Sarah Ann died at age 23 on Nov. 11, 1862 in Gallia Co., Ohio (CL-382)

    Notes:

He is likely the W.C. Glenn owning land in Huntington Twp. Gallia Co., Ohio just west of his father A.Y. Glenn in the 1874 Gallia Co., Ohio atlas, in Twp. 7, Range 16, section 26. He is also likely to be the Curry Glenn who along with his father, Andrew, and Uncle James and cousin Milton were operators on the Underground Railroad.

    Notes:

According to an article in the Sunday "Oregonian", Hugh was a prominent Farmer and Doctor in California. A county that was formed from Colusa Co., California was named after him, "Glenn County". It still exists today. One of his daughters, Ella married Peter French, cattle king of Malheur Co., Oregon who was also Dr. Hugh Glenn's partner. Dr. Glenn was particulary known for helping the down and out. His book keeper was one of these persons. He repaid Doctor Hugh Glenn by laying in wait with and gun and murdering him as he exited a building. He was captured for his crime. (CL-509) Hugh J. Glenn died intestate. On March 14, 1883 the administration of his estate was granted to E. S. Wilson, a brother-in-law of Dr. Glenn. These records indicate that he owned 58,000 acres of land in Colusa County and 60,000 acres in Oregon, another extensive ranch in Nevada and 40,00 head of cattle. His killer's name was Hurman Miller. On Oct. 21, 1883, he was found guilty of murder in the first degree with the imprisonment penalty. The following information was provided by Sharon Forkell in 2003: "Hugh J. Glenn married Nancy Abernathy, they had the following children:1.William B. b. 8/1850 d. unknown, but only listed in 1850 census record. Died before 1883.2. 19. 47.  Charles CURRY, Attorney At LawCharles CURRY, Attorney At Law Descendancy chart to this point (28.Robert3, 8.Mary2, 1.George1) was born about 1857; died after 1936.

    Notes:

He received his father's work and family tradition on his ancestors which he imparted to distant family members in 1936 via letters and a visit. He was age 79 at the time and still practicing law as an attorney. He is quoted as saying: "The Youngs and Glenns had very frequently intermarried in Ireland and came here from Ulster, Ireland. One of the old sayings was that if they kept on intermarrying together, they would turn to noses and feet, as large noses and feet were characteristic of the family."

Mr. Curry also stated in his letter that the James Young whose will was probated in 1790, was the James Young to whom a warrant was issued along with Robert Curry, for military service, and he stated in a personal conversation that this is the same James Young who has military record in the Revolutionary War. (James Young was his father's gr.grandfather. He would have likely been told stories about his gr. grandfather who was in the Revolution and died 16 years before he was born.) During this visit, he gave family members his copies of 4 generations of his father's ancestry and gave them a tour of where the Glenn's were buried as well as lived.
