According to 3 descendants of this James Patrick Calhoun and their YDNA tests at FTDNA, this James Patrick is in a grouping by himself. He is not related to any other Calhoun/Colquhoun group as of 2022 out of 378 current Calhoun/Kirkpatrick testers.

His once expected to be brother, Hugh Colquhoun of PA, is not his brother. Hugh match a very large group of Colquhouns that include Rev. Alexander Colquhoun born, 1662, Alexander Colquhoun XV, b. 1573 and Robert Colquhoun, d. abt 1408.
Because of his association with that ancient Colquhoun line that includes many, it suggests he was fathered by someone other than a Colquhoun and that his mother was a Colquhoun explaining his birth at Crosh House.

He is often referred to as James Patrick Calhoun in various family tree. He is listed as Patrick in the administration of his estate as follows: South Carolina Genealogies, Volume 1, page 284, by A. S. Salley. It was reported that Mr. George Edson, editor of The Stewart Clan, discovered the records of administration of estate of Patrick Calhoun, with wife named as Catherine, father of four sons who were in Augusta County, Virginia in 1746 to 1756. Inventory was made in 1741, listing plantation and crops, four horses, a goat, six cows, five young cattle, nineteen sheep, swine, wagon, gears, plows, irons, tools and household goods, total of 152 pounds and 5 shillings. Catherine, the widow, renounced the right of administration in favor of Ezekial and William Calhoun. A bond was signed by Ezekial, William, John Noble and James Mitchell, all of Lancaster County. This was accepted by the court May 4, 1743 and settlement was made by May 4, 1744.

James Calhoun arrived in the colonies in 1733 according to the book by Charles A. Hanna, The Scotch-Irish. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1995. Volume I. Page: 54 along with his wife and six children.

His descendants soon moved to the waters of Kenawha in Wythe Co., Virginia according to "Colonial Familes". This matches with info on the James McCall family that was on the same ship in 1733 that arrived in Philadelphia. "James McCall and all of his sons were all soldiers in the Revolution. James (McCall) was probably born in 1721 in County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland. He arrived in Philadelphia, PA in 1733 accompanied by his (non-genetic) brothers: William and Thomas and sister Elizabeth; cousins: Francis and Thomas; along with James Harris and his family and James Calhoun and his family.

The three families settled in Conachcocheque Creek, PA and later moved to New River or Little Kenhoway in the western part of Virginia where there remained for a number of years. James McCall was living in Wythe Co., VA in 1756 when the French Indian War broke out. Believing the wilds of the mountainous Virginia to be unsafe for their family, James and his wife Janet Harris McCall (daughter of James Harris above) moved to Mecklenburg, NC in 1756. (James McCall Jr. removed to the Calhoun Settlement in SC in 1771.)"

Perhaps descendants of James and Catherine Calhoun's descendants took the same route too as the article mentions that they moved from Pennsylvania (Chester, Lancaster, Cumberland PA, to Augusta 1746 to Wythe Co., VA.) to the Carolinas together. His descendants were driven from this Virginia territory after Bradock's defeat in 1755 and established Calhoun settlement in Abbeville, SC.

Disaster again struck in 1760 when according to Colonial Families of the U.S., James, the eldest son and his mother were slain in the Long Cane Creek Massacre. Other sources says it's James' mother and wife who were slain. In any case, Catherine Montgomery Calhoun's aged gravestone proves that his wife was killed by Indians in Feb. of 1760. Colonial Families lists his children as James of Pennsylvania, William, John, Catherine and Ezekial who died in 1662 in SC. "Colonial Families of the US" states that he descends through a much different branch of Calhouns than Hugh Calhoun. However, Colonial Families is the one that traces James Patrick Calhoun back through the same ancient Colquhouns as the rest of his originally thought to be brothers starting with Humphrey Colquhoun (1350-1406). At this point, we don't know which is correct.

James married Catherine MONTGOMERY in 1713 in Londonderry, co. Derry, Ulster, Ireland. Catherine (daughter of Hugh MONTGOMERY and Jane PATRICK) was born on 7 Jan 1684 in Londonderry, co. As far as DNA goes as a match of this James married to Susannah (Nancy) Long to my mother, I've had about 5 cousins to compare to. These matches are could belong to his wife's side as this Calhoun line is only very distantly related to me if James has parents correctly attributed to him by YDNA evidence. Two of them had cM matches with her at 8.5 and 7.5 respectively. James Patrick, his father's descendants and my mother have 2 other matches at 7 or 8 cM's:A092025 M.C. He is likely the James who had 619 acres on Reed Creek being surveyed in 1749. This is the same creek on which his brothers, William and Patrick bought land. (vol25no10pp147_155_462179.pdf) This could be the land that James bought on Hays Creek off the James River. He is listed as the brother (in-law) of John Nobel in his will dated 1752 along with brothers Patrick and William Calhoun who were named his executors in Augusta or Wythe Co., VA. He and his relatives, Patrick and Hugh (son of Uncle Hugh) along with brother-in-law, Joseph Long witnessed the deed of sale of Robert and Mary (Baker) Ewing in Augusta Co., VA in 1755. Robert and Mary Ewing were then of Lunenburg Co., VA and were selling land they had received in 1749 on the Roanoke River. This is important to note, because it does mean that at least the Ewings were able to move from Augusta to Lunenburg by 1755. There had to be river routes (via the Roanke River?) or trails to get them there by 1755 where my James Calhoun, b. bef 1733 was living in 1748 at at least age 16. In that time period, it was extremely unlikely that persons moved without other family or friends also.James (son of James Patrick Calhoun) along with (his brother) John Calhoon and a William Crow put up a bond for James Buchanan, merchant of Henrico who was in a court case in Oct. 1765 in Augusta Co., Virginia. He and John are the only children of James Patrick who could account for this record. If that proves to be accurate, his wife, Nancy Susannah Long did not likely die in the 1760 massacre in Long Cane, SC unless James returned to Augusta Co., Virginia after the massacre. It was his mother instead. According to Chalkley, this was titled "Buchanan vs. Crow". Also, it is logical to assume he is not the James who died in Captain Braddock's War in 1755 either.

According to "Colonial Families of America," he was a Justice of the Peace in South Carolina. His son Joseph was a congressman in 1807 among other distinguished accomplishments.

He shares 3 mutations with descendants of the following group of YDNA testers suggesting they are all likely related with the same line of descent. According to Wikipedia: "Patrick Calhoun (11 June 1727– 15 January 1796), [1]: 32  was born in County Donegal, Ireland, but emigrated to Virginia with his parents in 1733, and from there the family made their way to South Carolina. According to A Compendium of Irish Biography (1878):[2]

He and his family suffered severely during the war with the French and the Indians. Shortly after the peace of 1763 he was elected a member of the provincial legislature, and continued a member of that and afterwards of the state legislature (with the intermission of a single term) till his death in 1796. In the war of the Revolution he took an early, decided, and active part against the British. Patrick had 149 acres being surveyed where he lived on Reed Creek in 1748 in Augusta Co., VA. After Braddock's defeat in 1655, he moved to Abbeville, SC along with his family. On Aug. 19, 1765, James Buchanan and William Thompson, executors of James Patton, conveyed 322 acres of land in Augusta Co., Virginia to Patrick Calhoun then of South Carolina the land he originally lived on in Augusta Co., Virginia. On Oct. 16, 1765, Patrick Calhoun sold 610 acres of land on Reed Creek in Augusta Co., VA to Hugh Montgomery (his possible cousin through his grandmother, Catherine Montgomery).Patrick was listed as of the settlement of Long Cane Creek in Granville Co., SC in this sale of land.

is the grandfather of the statesmen, John C. Calhoun. He was appointed by the Provincial Government to head a group of rangers to protect the frontier during the Revolutionary War. They had to fight both the Indians and the Tories. This Patrick is the father of the statesman John C. Calhoun, though he is not listed as the son of James and Catherine Montgomery Calhoun in "Colonial Families of the U.S.".

I've found one DNA match for a descedant of this James and many for descendants of his siblings. He is related to my Mom via DNA but has the least matching amounts with my mother of any of them indicating we do not descend through this James.

This is the Ezekial that is often listed as having died in Abbeville, SC in 1762. I suggest otherwise. For a time there is an Ezekial in Guilford Co., NC that is highly likely to be the brother of our James who married Jane and lived in Lunenburg, VA and then Guilford Co., NC. He is however, not always listed as a son of James married to Susanah Nancy Long.
